Chapter 6

Emma was practically up all night reading that storybook. What August was telling her was actually making sense, but it couldn't be true. Could it? But that tree, the hole in it, it's the same size as the wardrobe in the book. 'It's 5am, I need sleep.' She thought. 'Sleep will clear my mind.'

She woke up at 10:30 to a knock at the door. She padded down the stairs and opened the door, only to find the mayor. "Mayor Mills. What are you doing here?"

She smiled. "Just an apology Miss Swan. I made you an apple turnover. Fresh out of the oven actually. I realized that I was out of line all those months ago in the diner. I had no right to say those things to you, so I'm sorry. I hope you can find it in your heart to… forgive me." The mayor said.

Emma took the turnover. "Uh… thanks madam mayor." She said cautiously. "Bye." She watched as the mayor turned around and began to walk away. She had to try, to just see her reaction. "Your highness?"

Regina's body spun around and her eyes were widened, but she quickly recovered. "What did you just call me?"

Emma shrugged. "Thanks again." She said with a smirk. Emma shut the door. "Shit." She muttered.

She walked in the kitchen and saw a note on the counter. You looked pretty tired, I took Henry to Ashley's Nursery place thing. See you later. ~D

Emma smiled, then her attention went back to the turnover in her hand. It was all true. She knew what she had to do. She had to write two letters.

Dear Neal,

I know the truth now Neal. You're not crazy. I have to do something. Something that you're not going to like. It'll be okay though. The mayor brought me an apple turnover and I'm pretty sure it's laced with the sleeping curse. It can only be broken by true love's kiss. I need to share that kiss with someone who also believes in the curse. That leaves you and August, but August and I don't share true love. Neal, I know I haven't been able to admit it. But I love you. I know you won't be able to come back and break the curse until your released from prison, but I can wait. Henry will be fine. He has Mary Margaret and David, they're my parents. They'll take good care of him. We share true love, I know that. I was angry, but I forgive you. I love you Neal Cassidy.

~Ems

By the end of writing that letter, she was in tears. She didn't want to admit that she loved him to him, but she had to. She had to save the town. She had to save her parents. Up next, August. His was gonna be short and simple.

Dear August,

You didn't fail me. I'm going to do what I have to do to save everyone, including you. The curse won't break for about another year, 6 months if Neal gets an early release. Thank you for pushing me August. I am only able to believe in all this crap because of you and Neal. I'm going to eat a poisoned apple turnover and when Neal is released, he will wake me up. Build a relationship with your father August. You're free, no responsibilities that you can't handle.

~Emma

She walked outside to send the letters in the mail just in time. "Wait up!" She called after the mailman. "I have two letters to send out." The man turned around and took the letters from Emma. "Thank you. Have a good day sir."

"You too." He said and he was gone.

Emma walked back inside and went over to the dining room table, where the apple turnover lied. She took the turnover out of the container and brought it up to her mouth, but she hesitated and lowered it. "You can do this Swan. It's for the best. You have to save everyone. You can do this." She told herself.

She brought the turnover back up to her mouth and took a large bite. Just like that, Emma Swan was unconscious on the floor of the dining room in her house. Merely 4 weeks prior to her 17th birthday.

Mary Margaret was the first to get home, she had picked up Henry from Ashley's Nursery on her way home- it was only 20 minutes after Emma ate the turnover. She walked inside and sat Henry in his carrier on the floor.

She went in the kitchen for a snack before going upstairs to check on Emma. She grabbed a yogurt- and poured herself a glass of apple juice- out of the fridge. When she made her way to the dining room, she dropped her yogurt and glass cup on the floor when she saw her daughter lying on the ground next to a turnover, not moving at all.

"Emma!" She ran over to her daughter and tried shaking her awake. "Come on Em! Come on baby, wake up." Then she felt for a pulse. She heaved a sigh of relief when she felt a pulse- it was weak, but it was there. She pulled out her phone and called for an ambulance, then she called David.

David was sitting at his desk, across from Graham's when his phone started ringing. He saw it was Mary Margaret, then got this terrible feeling that something was wrong.

"Mare?"

"David! Oh my God! I just came home and she-she was on-on the floor. She wasn't moving! The ambulance is on the way! Henry's it his carrier in the living room. David! I'm scared! She wasn't moving! She barely has a pulse!"

"Mary Margaret!" He said, not loudly, but sort of firmly. "What's going on?"

"I-I came home and put Henry in his carrier. Then I-I went to get a snack and I saw Em-Emma on the ground! She wouldn't wake up." She took a deep breath. "I called an ambulance, then I called you. I'm scared David."

"Okay Mare. I need you to stay calm. I'll meet you at the hospital. I love you."

"I love you too." Mary Margaret ended the call.

"Graham. Something happened. Emma… she's on the way to the hospital. I don't know what happened. I have to go. Can you handle it here or do I need to call Sean in?"

Graham shook his head and stood up. "I'm fine here mate. If I need help, I'll call him in myself. Go. I'll be fine."

August was in his room at Granny's B&B, when there was a knock at his door. He got up and limped to the door. He answered it and saw Red standing there. "It's Ruby right?" He asked with a smile.

She popped her bubble gum. "Yeah. The mail guy said this is for you." He opened it and read it right in front of her. She watched as his smile turned into a frown. "You okay?"

"No." He whispered. "No." He ran past Ruby. "No. no, no, no, no!" He yelled running towards Emma's house. He stopped when he saw her being loaded into an ambulance, Mary Margaret right after her. "No. There must've been some other way Emma." He whispered to himself.

He walked back to Granny's, but went to the diner instead of the B&B. He needed alcohol. "What can I get you honey?" Granny asked him.

"Something strong." Was his response. "Really strong." He whispered.

It's been a few days since Emma was poisoned. Neal was sitting in his cell talking with his cellmate about Emma- ironically. "She's honestly the best thing that's ever happened to me. We have a son. Henry. I've yet to meet him, but she sends me pictures. I love them both so much."

"Cassidy! You have mail." The guard said tossing a letter into the cell.

Neal smiled, picking the letter up off the floor. "This is her hand-writing." He ripped the envelope open and his heart sunk in his chest. "No." He whispered, tearing the letter to shreds.

"You okay man?" His cellmate asked. "Is your girl okay? Did she break things off or somethin'?" He asked.

Neal shook his head. "She-she's hurt. I need to make a phone call!" He yelled through the bars of his cell. "I need to make a call!"

"Man! You gotta calm down Cassidy!" His cellmate said pulling him from the bars. "Calm down." He told him.

Neal couldn't calm down he was hyperventilating. "She's… She… I need to get out of here! I can't… breathe. I… can't… breathe."

His cellmate wet over to the bars of the cell. "Yo! We need a doc in here! Somethin's wrong with him."

A guard came over. "What's your deal Collins?"

"Cassidy ain't breathing right. He's havin' a panic attack or somethin'."

Guard looked past Neal's cellmate- Collins- and saw that Neal was standing up gripping onto the bed frame and he could hear him hyperventilating. "Cassidy! Snap out of it!" He yelled. "Great." He muttered, then pulled his radio out. "Wilson, we need a transport to the infirmary."

"She's in a coma. I'm sorry. We don't know what caused it. It's almost like magic. It doesn't make any sense. I'm sorry." Dr. Whale told the couple.

"How do you not know?" David asked, rubbing Mary Margaret's back soothingly. "Your doctor's, maybe you should figure it out." David hissed.

The doctor sighed. "All do respect sheriff Nolan, we're doing everything we can."
