Sadie took a tiny sip from the straw Lars was holding to her lips. Orange juice, It was cold and wet and sweet in her overly dry mouth.
"Take a little more." Lars urged when she tried to spit out the straw.
"I don't want more." She mumbled, pushing his arms away.
"Just another sip, please." He pressed the straw against her lips until she finally relented and took a small swig. "There you go." He smiled at her, setting the juice to the side. "If you keep that down the doctor says you can have jello."
"Yay." She rolled her eyes at him. He stood from his seat on the hospital bed, laughing.
"Do you want to take a nap?" He offered.
"The nurse will be back five minutes from now." Sadie rolled her eyes. "What's even the point?"
"Come on, just try to shut your eyes." He sat down on the edge of the bed, petting her hair gently. Sadie huffed and rolled her eyes at him but, she did turn to lay on her side. She had almost settled herself when a cramping sensation worked its way down her abdomen and into her pelvis.
"Lars…" She whimpered, holding out her hands. He grabbed them and she squeezed tightly as the contraction built and then slowly released her muscles. She breathed out slowly, rubbing her sore middle with the heel of her hand.
"Almost twenty minutes between contractions." He smiled at her. "That's good."
"I want them to stop." She whined, burying her face in the pillows.
"Me too, babe." Lars whispered.
"I just want the baby to be okay." She sniffed. "If anything happens I…"
"Shh, shh. Just rest, alright? You and the baby are going to be fine." He stroked her hair soothingly as she relaxed in to the pillows.
"I'm sorry for all of this." She sniffed.
"No! Don't say that, this isn't your fault, you were sick."
"You and mom both told me…" Sadie argued.
"Shh!" Lars interrupted. "Don't worry about anything, honey. We're just focusing on getting you and the baby better."
"I'm…"
"Don't say sorry!" Lars pushed aside the small rolling table by her bed and climbed in with her, wiggling his way under the thin blankets. "Just….be here with me." He wrapped his arms tightly around her weak frame and pulled her into his side. She relaxed into his touch, resting her head into the crook of his arm. "Just close your eyes, you're going to be alright."
