Santana still wasn't too clear on what her and Brittany's relationship status was after everything that happened junior year and what little progress she made over summer vacation. Sure, she said she wasn't into labels but she never realized how much she actually needed to know, especially when it came to Brittany. Maybe she was just going through withdraws after they agreed they wouldn't have sex again until Santana figured herself out which was tough because Santana and Brittany have always had a very physical relationship. It was for the best though and, other than that one time during summer vacation when Brittany's willpower was weakened due to Santana holding her hand in public for the first time, they stuck to their agreement.
Labels aside, Santana would always be there for Brittany just like Brittany would always be there for Santana. So when she found Brittany aimlessly staring into her locker with that adorably frustrated pout on her face, Santana just had to see what was wrong.
"Hey Britt." Santana greeted a little too cheerfully, bouncing over to the blonde but Brittany barely gave her a smile in response.
"Hi Santana." She mumbled as she furrowed her brows and continued to stare inside her locker. The look was almost an exact replica of how devastated she was after Kurt flipped about the posters she put up without his permission and Santana could not handle seeing that a second time. In the past, Santana would cheer Brittany up with kisses or gentle touches, but they agreed they'd put a stop to that too so they wouldn't fall back into their same routine. Santana needed to figure herself out as well as learn how to cheer up Brittany without the use of her fingers or tongue.
Santana frowned and tilted her head to glance inside the locker too, maybe she wasn't seeing what Brittany was but there was nothing special, "Everything okay?"
"Y-yeah, I'm fine." Brittany nodded, shaking her head out of the daze she was in and finally looked to Santana. The brunette wasn't buying it at all as she crossed her arms and arched her brow. Brittany finally smiled at Santana's threatening stance, "Okay, I'm having a little trouble with my campaign. I don't have any good ideas."
Relieved, Santana uncrossed her arms and relaxed, "Don't say that, Britt. I'm sure you'll figure it out."
"I don't know," Brittany shrugged, pulling a book from her locker before shutting it. She wouldn't make eye contact with Santana which she found strange because Brittany was all about that, but instead focused on the floor, "What if I gave Kurt everything I got? No one's really let me take charge of something so important like that other than choreography, I wanted to make him proud. You know? I didn't want to let him down." Santana watched as Brittany shrunk herself down and bit her lip, "I should've thought this through before signing up to run by myself. Everyone's just going to think I'm s-"
"Brittany S. Pierce, don't you even go there." Santana huffed, putting a stop to Brittany tearing herself down. She reached for her elbow, breaking the no touching rule, and turned her to that Brittany could only look at Santana, "I know that you've got way more in that genius brain of yours, you didn't give everything to Kurt." Santana wasn't really thinking of what she was saying before blurting it out, but it worked for her the last time so maybe she should quit the whole thinking before you speak thing. Still, seeing that she had caught Brittany's attention made her nervous so she sucked in a deep breath and stared up into sad blue eyes hoping that whatever happened to fall out of her mouth next made sense. "When I said that you're a unicorn, I meant it. You're the unicorn, B, not Kurt. Just because you gave him a few of your ideas doesn't mean he's any closer to winning this thing than you are. You came up with everything and it's only a matter of time before he runs out of your ideas. In fact, he probably needed the head start because once you get this show going, he won't stand a chance. You'll be unstoppable, Brittany. That's a fact."
Brittany's frown instantly vanished as sad blue eyes sparkled with something Santana wasn't sure of but had definitely seen before. She could see that Brittany was trying to keep her smile small but the hint of red at the tips of her ears and the light tint of pink at the apples of her cheeks told Santana that whatever she said was a success.
"I really, really want to kiss you right now." Brittany mumbled through her smile, watching Santana's eyes widen and nervously eye all the students passing, but she didn't make a move, "Do you think you could help me with my campaign? There's that debate in a couple of weeks and I have no idea what I should talk about."
"Oh Britt, I don't know..I'm not really good at that kind of stuff. Not like you are." Santana stammered.
"Sure you are! You love arguing with people. Isn't that what debates are about?"
"Well sort of, but-"
"Please, Santana?" All Brittany had to do was pout and bat her eyelashes and Santana was a goner.
"Okay, fine. I'll come over after school." Santana replied, breaking yet another rule. She didn't really mind though, not when Brittany instantly perked up and almost kissed her cheek before dashing away to her next class.
After school let out for the day, Santana went home to mentally prepare herself before going over Brittany's. It was a rare occasion that they'd ever do actual schoolwork afterschool, with the house empty for at least an hour and a half they'd be crazy not to take the opportunity, but this time had to be strictly business. Santana was doing well so far, she didn't need any slip ups. It was going to be a normal day, she was going to keep her cool and help Britt with her campaign and that was it. No sweet lady kisses, no scissoring, no funny business.
She picked up a pizza and a bottle of Dr. Pepper on the way to Brittany's since there was no telling when they'd finish up. As she pulled up, she was surprised to see Whitney's car parked out front but a little part of her was also relieved that they wouldn't be alone. With the box of pizza in hand and bottle of soda in the other, Santana made her way to the front door and was instantly greeted by Brittany's mom.
"Hi, Mrs. Pierce." Santana said politely as Whitney opened the door.
"Hey honey! I haven't seen you around here in awhile." She said as she gestured for Santana to come in.
The brunette nodded guiltily and tried to come up with a believable lie, "Yeah, I've been super busy with school. My parents are cracking down on me for college."
"Santana!" Ashley, Brittany's younger sister, practically screamed as she barreled around the corner dressed in her soccer uniform and latched around Santana's waist.
"Easy, Ash, we don't want to crush the poor girl." Whitney scolded lightly as she reached for her purse and car keys.
"Hey kid, still playing soccer I see." Santana smiled, keeping a firm grip on the pizza and soda.
"Duh! I'm the best on the team!" Ashley smirked causing Santana to laugh.
"That's awesome. Maybe I'll go with you guys next time to one of your games?"
"That would be so cool!"
"Come on, Ash, we're going to be late to practice." Whitney called as she walked from the kitchen and smiled at Santana, "You remember where Britt's room is, right?"
"Of course." She replied, "Have fun a practice!"
Once the door was closed, Santana let out a sigh; so much for not being alone with Brittany. Still, she walked up the familiar stairs and headed to Brittany's room.
"Guess who brought brain food?" Santana cheered as she nudged open the door with the pizza box, assuming she'd find Brittany at her desk or sprawled out on the floor with crayons and computer paper everywhere. Instead, Brittany was on her back with her head hanging over the edge of the foot of the bed. Her hair was almost long enough to touch the carpet as she kept her fingers laced together on her stomach and her knees bent. Santana tilted her head to the side to look at her, "Uhm, what are you doing?"
"I'm trying to get my genius juices flowing.." Brittany replied, her face a light shade of pink from being upside down for so long.
"I don't think that's how it works, B." Santana smiled and set the box down on Brittany's desk, "Come eat, I think it'll help. Then we'll get started, okay?" Brittany nodded, still looking a little defeated and rolled off her bed to grab a slice.
"You got Dr. Pepper?" she commented, perking up again, "But you hate Dr. Pepper."
Santana just shrugged before taking a bite of pizza, "But you like it."
A few slices later, the two migrated to the floor with Brittany's laptop set up between them. Still hopelessly trying to abide by her self-inflicted rules, Santana kept a safe distance; she knew if she were close enough, Brittany would lean on her or their hands might touch and that always led to something more that Santana wasn't quite ready for. At least, not yet.
Santana could tell Brittany was growing more and more frustrated with herself after they tried throwing out more poster ideas. More than once, Santana wanted to reach out and hug the girl because she couldn't bear seeing her so distraught. She knew Brittany could get invested into things she really loved like dancing, motocross, cheerleading, but this was starting to feel like something different. There was something Santana was missing but she wasn't sure what. Brittany was so hard on herself for not thinking up anything clever that again Santana had to stop and remind her that she was there to help and she didn't need to beat herself up about this.
"I know, it's just.." Brittany trailed off in a huff then toyed with a couple crayons laid out in front of her. Santana waited for her to continue but it looked like the blonde was yet again swept up in her thoughts. She had been doing that a lot lately ever since she had decided to run for class president and Santana didn't get why other than the obvious stress and pressure it was causing her. Still, Santana worried about the blonde and it was rare that Brittany didn't just out right say what was bugging her.
"It's just what?" Santana asked lightly, allowing herself to open up a conversation that might not just be about school. She was scared of the consequences, scared of sharing feelings, but at the same time she wanted to talk. She wanted to know what Brittany was feeling and she wanted to make it better. She was going to be different now, that was the whole point of their agreement over summer vacation and her rules. She was going to be better for Brittany and that starts by making it comfortable for her to open up. At Brittany's hesitance, Santana reached over and rubbed at Brittany's back, "This isn't just about the campaign, is it?"
Brittany contemplated her answer but ended up just biting her lip and shaking her head.
"What else is it about?" Santana asked, ducking her head trying to get Brittany to look at her.
When Brittany finally looked up, eyes filled with so much undying love and patience and heartache, Santana's world stopped.
"It's about us." She shrugged helplessly, "It's about people like us, like me, like Kurt, but mostly it's about you." Santana's lips parted but words just wouldn't come so Brittany went on, "I want you to be comfortable enough to be yourself. I know you started the Bully Whips and the slushy attacks have gone down considerably but I don't want you to feel like you have to watch your own back all the time. I want to protect you too and I want to make you feel safe. I don't want you feeling like you can't be who you are because I know you, the real you, and I know she's tired of hiding."
Santana could feel the tears forming at the corners of her eyes but held it together, "Brittany.."
"I know I said I'd give you the time and the space you needed to figure everything out, but I think it would be so much easier if you didn't have to pretend to be one person at school and someone else at home. It may just be one place where you can be yourself, other than with me, but I want that for you so much because maybe then you'll see that being with me wouldn't be so scary after all." Santana's heart leapt at Brittany's words and if it weren't for Brittany still going on with what she needed to say, she would've kissed her. "I thought that because Kurt was a fellow unicorn that he'd get that, that he'd want the same thing I want for you for everyone else like us but I don't think he does. I think he's too concerned with just having something on his application that he's missing the whole point, that he could really do something." Brittany stopped and looked to her laptop where a draft of a poster she had in mind was displayed, "He was ashamed to hang the posters I made him. You can't lead a cause that important when you're too afraid to embrace your awesome even when it's something as little as a poster. I'd never be ashamed of something like that, never ever and I want you to be able to feel the same. I want to win this for you, Santana. I want to change things, I want to make things better.. for you."
After that, Santana couldn't help herself and reached up to guide Brittany's lips to hers. They were just a couple soft pecks, nothing too heated, but she needed to kiss this girl who would literally do anything for her. She was speechless; she couldn't believe she had someone as wonderful and patient as Brittany love her.
"I thought we weren't allowed to do that for now?" Brittany mumbled against Santana's lips, still keeping close just in case Santana wanted to kiss her again, "Not that I'm complaining or anything.."
"You want to be class president because of me.." Santana replied, running her thumb against Brittany's jaw and staring at her lips dreamily, "I love you."
"I love you too." Brittany said without missing a beat, never one to miss an opportunity to assure Santana of her love again. Santana never grew tired of hearing those words come from Brittany's lips and leaned forward to kiss her again and again.
"You are going to make a great president, Brittany." Santana told her earnestly after pulling away yet keeping her hand on Brittany's thigh, "You're definitely going to win."
"I hope so." Brittany said, her smile faltering, "What I'm worried about is that people won't take me seriously." Santana frowned at that, it was common for Brittany to doubt herself because so few people genuinely believed in her. "Everyone only thinks my head is filled with sunshine and rainbows; it's so frustrating because I'm so much more than that and I have to work twice as hard as everyone else because of that."
"I know, baby." Santana sighed, too caught up to catch the slip up, "But you can do this, I believe in you."
"You do?"
"Completely." Santana nodded confidently before reaching over and closed the laptop.
"What are you doing?"
"Staring at the same thing for an hour isn't going to help us come up with a new campaign strategy and we're gonna need one if we want you to win."
Brittany gulped at the mischievous glint in Santana's eyes, "What did you have in mind?"
"I don't know about you, but some of my best ideas come from when I'm in the shower."
Brittany gulped again, the image of Santana, naked and dripping wet instantly clouding her mind; Santana wasn't the only one suffering from their no sex rule. Brittany was able to shake the thoughts away and scrunch her brows, "You want me to take a shower to get ideas?"
Santana just smiled and shook her head, "Yeah, but I want you to relax too."
She didn't have to say anymore for Brittany to catch on to what Santana was hinting at, "Are you gonna get in with me?"
"If that'll help you relax." Santana nodded, smiling softly at Brittany's sudden excitement.
Taking baths together was something incredibly intimate so it only happened a couple of times over the years that their friendship began to become a little complicated, but none recently. To see Santana was the one who offered made Brittany extremely happy and hopeful and would not let the opportunity go to waste.
So with a tub filled with warm water and soapy bubbles and Brittany's back molded perfectly against Santana's front, ideas began to roll freely. There were talks of poster ideas and debate topics and campaign strategies and ways to get the voters to like her more than they already did, but what they needed was a way to show people that Brittany wasn't just a pretty face, that she possessed qualities that the others didn't and that meant she could be a serious contender.
"Dancing." Santana gasped, scaring Brittany a little with her outburst, "Britt, you're the best dancer in the whole school."
"I am loving all these compliments tonight." Brittany smirked, tilting her head back to kiss at Santana's jaw, not realizing that Santana wasn't just complimenting her to compliment her.
"No B, I mean dancing..you could use those killer skills to your advantage!" Santana was getting excited over her own realization and that had Brittany giggling.
"You want me to dance for everyone?"
"Yeah! I don't know?" Santana frowned, now unsure of how Brittany could incorporate her sweet moves into her campaign. The two pondered it for a few minutes before they turned to each other at the exact same time.
"Flashmob!"
"Yes!" Santana gasped, "You can show off. You can get people involved. You can stir up the competition, if you even want to call them that. Oh my God, Britt! You got this!"
"I'm so excited, I should start choreographing now!" Brittany beamed and tried to climb out of the tub as fast as she could, her limbs already itching to get dancing. Santana just smiled after the girl, naked and trailing water everywhere while rambling on about which song she should do.
