A MENAGERIE OF WAYWARD BIRDS V

This one takes place right before season two starts.

After a night of strong winds and rain Gilligan was out collecting firewood. That morning they had realized that it was the one year anniversary of them being marooned so they all were feeling a little blue. As he was picking up a piece of driftwood his swan friends Eugene and Iona as well as Rocky the Harpy Eagle hurried up to him.

"What's wrong?" Gilligan asked knowing all too well as to what it might be. "Did someone get stranded?"

Everyone seemed to nod their heads and Rocky flew off, Eugene and Iona took off running and Gilligan followed. He followed them to the lagoon where he saw something brown in the sand. He walked up to it and saw that it was a small brown eagle. He couldn't tell if it was a golden or a bald. He was about to touch it when it raised its head and looked at him with one piercing yellow eye.

"Hey there little guy are you okay?" Gilligan asked as the eagle continued to stare at him. "Are you okay little miss?"

The eagle gave a soft click sound, stood up and seemed to move her right wing tenderly indicating that she also had hurt her wing.

"Awe you hurt your wing! Come with me the Professor can help!" Gilligan replied as he picked up the eagle and hurried back to camp.

"PROFESSOR!" Gilligan called as he hurried into camp. The Professor rushed out of the supply hut with his medical bag followed by Ginger in her white coat.

"Fishing line or broken wing?" The Professor asked as he put his medical bag on the table.

"Is that a golden eagle?" Ginger asked as Gilligan put the eagle in front of the Professor.

"It's a young bald eagle!" Gilligan replied as he stroked the eagles head. "She'll change color when she's all grown!"

The Professor inspected the eagle's wing while Gilligan continued to stroke her head.

"Hmmm, it appears that her wing is dislocated!" The Professor replied after a moment. "I also feel a couple breaks near her shoulder. The best I can do is wrap the wing and see if it'll heal over time!"

"Um Professor!" Gilligan replied as he pointed to her eye. "There's also something wrong with her eye!"

"Oh dear!" The Professor replied as he shined a light in her eye which was a pale milky color. "She might have damaged it during the fall. I don't think there is much I can do for it. It might heal on it's own!"

"What about the antibiotic eyedrops?" Gilligan asked nervously.

"I don't think that will help!" The Professor asked sadly. "The drops are for humans only! If we were back home they would do surgery on her. We can only hope that this will heal on it's own. For now let's wrap the wing and make her comfortable!"

"It okay Martha you'll be better in know time!" Gilligan replied stroking Martha's head.

"Why Martha?" Ginger asked as she helped the Professor wrap Martha's wing.

"After Martha Washington!" Gilligan replied as Rocky the Harpy eagle landed next to him.

Two months later Martha had been given a clean bill of health and was now flying flying around the communal table with Rocky. They landed and touched beaks. Martha had reached maturity and had changed from mottled brown to dark brown with a white head.

"Awe they make an adorable couple!" Mrs. Howell replied as she watched them.

"Yeah I wonder what their babies will look like!" Gilligan replied as Rocky and Martha took off again and flew off over the trees.

A:N: The bald eagle is a bird of prey found in the United States and most of Alaska, Canada and Mexico. It is the United States of America's national bird. They can be mistaken for the golden eagle because they are all brown up until four or five years old.

They were once on the brink of extinction but were taken of the endangered/threatened list in 2007.

The bald eagle and the harpy eagle cannot reproduce because they don't have the same genetic makeup.
