A MENAGERIE OF WAYWARD BIRDS VI

This one takes place right after the second season episode 'Hi-Fi Gilligan' right after Gilligan finds Aiden the pelican.

SEPTEMBER 2, 1965

After they cleaned up their camp Gilligan made Aiden comfortable and had Eugene and Iona keep him company then he headed to the western beach to fish.

Once there he thought he heard several ducks quacking and didn't think anything about it. He was about to cast his line in the water when something pink caught his eye. He turned around and couldn't believe his eyes.

With the camp finally put back together the Skipper and the Professor sat at the table eating bananas.

"SKIPPER, PROFESSOR!" Gilligan called as he ran into camp. "Your not going to believe what's at the beach not in a million years!"

"What is it now Gilligan!" The Skipper replied as he rolled his eyes and stood up.

"It's a colony of flamingos!" Gilligan replied as he jumped up and down and pointed towards the beach.

"Now this I have to see!" The Professor replied as they followed Gilligan back to the beach.

They arrived back at the beach just in time to see several of the flamingos flying away with only a couple staying behind. As they got closer they saw the reason why! One of them had an injured wing. Gilligan smiled softly and slowly walked towards them and kneeled down. The two flamingos came closer and allowed Gilligan to pat them. The Professor took the opportunity to inspect the flamingo's wing.

"It's okay ma'am!" Gilligan whispered and the flamingo seemed to shake his head. "I mean it's okay sir!"

"Hmmm, it looks like some of his flight feathers are seriously bent!" The Professor replied. "I'd like to take them back to camp to treat them."

"Come on Pinkerton and Rose! Want to go back to camp with us!" Gilligan replied as he picked up Pinkerton and Rose followed them back to camp.

"Oooh Pinkerton and Rose what lovely names!" Mrs. Howell replied as they all gathered around the flamingos.

"They're from that movie I was in called 'Jackal and Rose' where two spies from different organizations fall in love!" Ginger replied. "That one was my favorite!"

"Will you be able to fix the feathers?" Gilligan asked as the Professor looked at several bent feathers. "My brother took a bird class one time where they used steam from a teakettle to straighten out the feathers!"

"Great idea I'll put the pot on now!" Mary Ann replied as she got out the teakettle and put on over the fire.

"How long did the procedure take?" The Professor asked as one of the feathers broke of in his hand.

"It should work really really fast!" Gilligan replied as the teakettle began to whistle. "Now I just hold my hand in between the bent feathers and the bird, then let the steam hit the bent feathers so that they'll straighten out."

While Gilligan held Pinkerton the Professor held his wing open and Mary Ann held her hand in front of the damaged feathers and let the steam from the kettle hit the bent feathers. Just like that the feathers straightened up.

"There that should do it!" The Professor replied. "There were a few feathers fell off but they should grow back in about a month or so!"

Mary Ann and Ginger patted Pinkerton and Rose. Both of them were a pale pink in color and half black bills. They had grey legs with pink knees and feet.

Then they let Gilligan pat them some more then went over to join Eugene, Iona, and Aiden.

A/N: There are a total of six species of flamingos. The species I described in this chapter is the Chilean Flamingo. They are found throughout South America and there are a couple of colonies in Utah and California.

They tuck one leg underneath their bodies and stand on one leg. They sound a little like ducks.

When they are born they are grey. Then they turn pink as adults. They get their pink color from the shrimp they eat.
