THEY CAME FROM THE SEA V
April 8, 1955
The Gilligan's and the Flanagan's were in Florida for Easter weekend. The Flanagan's had rented a large vacation house and invited the Gilligan's to stay with them. The house was the last house where the ocean connected to the access canal.
Danny was fishing with his father and Dr. Flanagan. His mother, Mrs. Flanagan, and Bridget were sitting in lawn chairs by the door. Felix and Flynn were playing in a wading pool. And Will and the rest of the Flanagan kids were swimming in the canal.
"Does anyone need anything while I'm inside?" Mrs. Flanagan asked from the door.
"No thanks!" Everyone replied.
A second later they heard shouting coming from the water.
"SHAAARK!" Finley could be heard shouting.
Danny looked over at the commotion and cursed under his breath. While all the Flanagan's were swimming back to shore Will remained where he was. He rolled his eyes, dropped his fishing rod, and jumped into the water.
"Wiiiillllll!" Danny heard Finley shouting as he continued swimming. Within a minute he made it Will who had a big smile on his face.
"Will!" Danny began as he started treading water.
"It's not a shark it's manatees!" Will replied as whiskery lips appeared next to him. "Meet Mrs. Whiskers and her son Algae!"
Danny sighed and rolled his eyes as Algae's head popped out of the water and whistled. He smiled because who could resist that face.
A/N: There are four species of Manatees. The one usually seen in Florida is the West Indian Manatee. They are plant eating marine mammals and are occasionally called sea cows but are closely related to elephants.
Some folklore's have linked them to mermaids.
There is only one area in Florida where people are allowed to swim with manatees. They are listed as vulnerable to extinction.
