Chapter 16 light the fire
I left Cailan's tent with my promise ringing in my ears, it was too much to think of now and I was honestly happy to come across Duncan and Alistair arguing about the battle plans for the morning.
"What do you mean we won't be in the battle?" Alistair exclaimed.
Duncan sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "This is by the kings' personal request Alistair. If the beacon is not lit the Tern's men won't know when to charge."
Alistair rolled his eyes in my direction. "So he needs two grey wardens to stand up there holding a torch just in case right?" he scowled at Duncan, "I should be joining you in battle."
Duncan narrowed his eyes at the young warden. "That is not your decision. If the king wishes grey wardens to ensure the beacon is lit, then the grey wardens will be there. We will do whatever it takes to destroy the darkspawn, exciting or not."
Alistair's shoulders sagged in disappointment. "I get it. I get it. But just so you know if the king asks me to put on a dress and dance the remigold, I'm drawing the line darkspawn or not."
Duncan groaned, and my head snapped towards Alistair. "You have some strange ideas about the king."
"I happen to be quite fetching a dress," he replied innocently, inspecting his fingernails.
The whole idea was so absurd I burst out laughing. "You know I think id actually like to see that." I choked out between bouts of giggling.
He grinned. "I'd make an exception for you," he wiggled his eyebrows in amusement. "It would have to be a really pretty dress though."
I laughed harder and clutched my sides, tears leaking from the corners of my eyes. It felt so good to laugh at something so ridiculous again that I had trouble regaining my composure as Duncan shook his head at the two of us.
