Dabbling in Drabbles of the FMA Variety

32. Nightmare

Ed burst awake; the panic of the reoccurring nightmare lessoning somewhat as he calmed his frenzied breathing.

A cold breeze attacked his bare torso causing a violent ripple of goosebumps to race across his skin. The fall days were still warm but the nights whispered promises an early winter.

As he shut the window, Ed viciously grabbed the blanket from where it had tangled at his feet and laid back down. He tried unsuccessfully to rid his mind of the horrific images of twisted memories and imagined horrors and knew that returning to sleep would be a long time coming.

[A/N: I am not sure how I feel about this one. Unlike other drabbles I feel like it needed some reference as to why Al isn't ever present with Ed as he's often depicted when Ed is sleeping. As is the case with many drabbles I just didn't have the word count to explain his absence without it seeming like an unrelated reference. I even tried eliminating the parts about the weather, but still couldn't fit a satisfactory explanation that didn't seem under or over explained.

After much debate I decided to post this chapter 'as is'. This is partly because there are times that Ed and Al are separated during the series. But more so, I don't believe that Al would just hole up in every room Ed is sleeping just to be in the same room. I think there must be nights when he reads or possibly follows other small leads on his own. And this being the case, Ed could get up and join him, but would have to explain his nightmares which I think he would be both embarrassed by and also deserving of his twisted guilt-ridden way.

So anyway not that my authors note is longer than my drabble, please do feel free to give me your input one way or another. Thanks for reading!]
