I do not own the Teen Titans because I am unreliable and undeserving.
"Raven, please open the door! Please!"
He didn't care that his knocks were echoing down the hallway, or that his voice was loud and shrill. He could feel tears of frustration pooling behind his eyes as his fist pounded on her door. Sure, he could morph into a bug and slip on through the cracks, but after his accidental confession, he couldn't bear to break her trust like that.
At least, not again.
"Rae, please," he whispered, pressing his face against the cold metal. Time seemed to have escaped him, though he knew he hadn't been there longer than ten minutes. He could hear her on the other side of the door, her steady breathing broken by sharp gasps every now and then.
He wasn't sure where Jinx and Kid Flash were, but at this point, he didn't give a damn. It didn't matter if they found out about his and Raven's arrangement - he had fucked it up all on his own.
"Rae..." His voice was pleading; desperate. He hadn't meant to say it - hell, he wasn't even sure he meant it! Yeah, his feelings for her were definitely more than friendship, but love was a stretch. It was more like, really really really liking her. At least, he kept telling himself that.
But that was still more than he had promised.
Beast Boy leaned against her door, his frantic knocking slowly devolving into nothing more than a light tap. It was pointless - he knew that. He had broken all of her trust with him; ruined their friendship. Hell, he probably ruined a whole lot more than that, though he couldn't find the energy to think about it.
He had broken the biggest rule she had set: everything had to remain platonic. And a confession of love? That had to have been the furthest thing from platonic.
"Can I please... Can't I just, explain?" he whimpered, his voice on the verge of cracking. This wasn't fair - she owed him the chance to get everything off of his chest, didn't she? After all, she was the one who caused him to feel this way, right?
No, he thought bitterly, closing his eyes. Only he could control how he felt. He couldn't blame this on her.
He could, however, blame her for his sudden face plant as her door slid open, causing him to fall into her room.
It took him a moment to realize what had happened, but once the dizziness went away, and his eyes took in the familiar surroundings of her creepy-ass decor, he sprung up to his feet.
"Raven - " he began, but was silenced by her pressing her hand to his nose. It was then that he realized he was bleeding, and flashbacks from the beginning of their arrangement filled his mind. Their first kiss.
He felt his stomach twist sharply. He should have known things would end like this.
She continued to heal his nose, her eyes avoiding his as she hid her face within her hood. It was the first time she had worn her cloak like that in weeks - and it was because of him.
"Rae - " he tried again, but she merely shook her head.
"Let me finish healing you. Then we can... You can..." She seemed as lost as he was, which gave Beast Boy the tiniest glimmer of relief. He was still on planet Earth, in one piece, and only bleeding a little. Maybe he could salvage this?
"Kay," he replied, almost smiling at his nasally voice.
They stood in silence for a minute longer, before the power emitting from her hand diminished, and the pain in his nose turned into nothing more than a slight throb.
"There are tissues on my vanity," Raven remarked suddenly, causing Beast Boy to nearly jump out of his skin.
Regaining his composure, he nodded sheepishly, before making his way towards her mirror while she backed away towards her bed.
He gave his reflection a quick glance, only slightly embarrassed by the mixture of snot and blood that covered the lower half of his face. It was the tears in his eyes that worried him. He wasn't going to... cry, was he?
Snatching several tissues from their little box, he quickly wiped away the mess, loudly blowing his nose in the process. He could see Raven's reflection in the mirror, silently sitting on her bed with a blank expression.
Letting out a shaky breath, he tossed the used tissues into the waste basket beside her vanity, before turning around to face the empath.
"I, uh..."
"You love me?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper. She still hadn't looked at him, though her body language wasn't as closed off as before.
Beast Boy slowly moved towards her. "Well, duh," he began, giving her a small smile as he sat on the bed. "I love all of you guys - you're my family."
She shot him a glare, though it was fleeting. "Beast Boy," she deadpanned, her eyes leaving his.
The changeling let out an awkward chuckle, rubbing the back of his neck. "I mean, it's true," he continued, feeling his face flush. "But what I said back there... how I said it... I didn't quite mean it like that."
Raven's eyes remained glued to her lap, her face still hidden in the shadows of her hood. "Beast Boy," she repeated, obviously not buying it.
Groaning in frustration, the green titan flopped backwards, onto her bed. His mind was racing, his heart was pounding, and he was unsure of how to explain things to his teammate when he couldn't even explain it to himself.
"Okay, what I mean is... What I'm trying to say... UGH!" he growled, dragging his hands down his face. "I know you said that my feelings needed to remain platonic, and I tried - oh, I tried! - but it just kinda happened, alright?"
Again, Raven was silent.
Beast Boy felt the tears prick at his eyes, though he quickly blinked them back. "And it wasn't even, like, all the making out that caused it, okay?" he admitted, focusing on her ceiling above him. "It was the talking, and the hanging out, and the... the..."
Sitting up suddenly, he forced himself to look at her, which, in turn, caused her to look back at him.
"It was just you, Rae," he finished lamely, his eyes searching hers for something - anything. "It happened because you're you."
His breathing began to return to normal, though his blush only deepened. Raven was staring at him with what had to have been her blankest expression yet.
Nothing had exploded, though, which he took as a good sign.
"You love me." she repeated, though it was no longer a question. She said it like it was a fact - and an indisputable one at that. A fact that was maybe true, if Beast Boy ignored all of his anger and doubts and embarrassment.
"Kinda?" he relented, shrugging. "But that doesn't change the fact that I'm, like, royally pissed off at you."
She seemed taken aback by his last statement, her stoic facade slipping for a moment. But, in the blink of an eye, it was back. And then replaced by anger.
"You're pissed off at me?" she snapped, her voice laced with a hint of malice. "I'm not the one declaring my love for you."
Beast Boy merely rolled his eyes. "Yeah, Rae - that's 'cuz you're incapable of love," he quipped, crossing his arms before him. "Isn't that why we started this whole arrangement? 'Cuz you're not mature enough to filter through your emotions like an adult?"
The vase on her bedside table began to glow, though Raven seemed to pay it no mind as her eyes narrowed into slits. If looks could kill, Beast Boy mused to himself.
"'Mature'?" Raven mocked, her hands balling into fists at her sides. "You wanna talk about maturity, Beast Boy?"
The changeling forced a tight smile, gesturing towards the side of his head. "I'm all ears."
He watched as Raven opened and closed her mouth, various objects in her room shaking as they were encased by the glow of her magic. But when she didn't find the words she seemed to be searching so desperately for, she instead began smacking Beast Boy's arm.
"Ow, what the hell?" he shrieked, attempting to block the blows.
"Sorry," smack, "Beast Boy," smack, "I guess I'm not," smack, "'mature' enough," smack, "to be an adult about this!" Smack.
Beast Boy couldn't suppress the chuckle that rose in his throat as he took in his teammate's frazzled appearance. "Stop it, Rae!" he laughed, the tears finally spilling from his eyes.
But Raven continued her assault on him, her small hands flailing wildly as she aimed for his arms.
"No!" she exclaimed defiantly. "We are going to talk about this!"
Beast Boy continued to laugh as his efforts at blocking her lessened. He could tell she wasn't actually trying to hurt him, and figured it was her attempt at releasing her more aggressive emotions. "Raven, please."
The mirth in his voice seemed to finally reach her ears, and she looked up at him with a mixture of confusion and pity. Her arms fell to her sides, limp.
"Why don't you hate me?"
The question caught him off guard, though he didn't show it. Instead, he looked into her eyes, letting himself get lost in their vast, purple sea. Why was she so beautiful?
"I kinda do hate you," he admitted, feeling a weight lift off of his shoulders. "You put me through hell - and I know it was my choice, but still... Couldn't you tell? Didn't you realize I was falling for you?"
Raven looked away, her face falling into the shadows once more. "I thought I was just imaging it," she confessed, her voice settling back into a monotone. "You're just so kind and pure and light, and I'm cruel, twisted, dark... You're too good for me; I never thought you could actually care for me like that. Like this." She gestured between them, and it was then that Beast Boy realized he had been progressively getting closer to her.
"Haven't we all come to terms with the fact that I'm not the smartest guy in the world?" Beast Boy joked, giving his teammate a small smile. "Like, you're mysterious and funny and beautiful and amazing, and my survival instincts aren't the sharpest, so when somebody as frightening and incredible as you even looks my way, I'd be even stupider not to want you."
He slowly reached for her face, his fingers gently guiding her chin so that she was facing him once more.
"I-I'm so sorry, Beast Boy. I can't forgive myself for what I've put you through," she whispered, her eyes telling Beast Boy everything her words couldn't.
"Well, I can."
He pulled her into a slow kiss, ignoring the way half of him was screaming that he was an idiot; that he deserved better, and that he couldn't just forgive her like that.
But the other half didn't care about the semantics. All he cared about was the fact that she was kissing him back, and that her powers were going crazy as her creepy figurines began exploding one by one, and that she didn't seem to care. Maybe her mind wanted her to focus on a different emotion, but it seemed her heart wanted to focus on him.
And maybe ruining their friendship was okay, if it meant that they could be more.
