Chapter 23

The Olympian Warrior

Now that the Rangers had overcome their weaknesses and gaining more energy, Master Paine was becoming worried. The Rangers were getting stronger and stronger and soon they would be sure to but a stop to his fiendish plots.

Ernestine bit her lip as she watched him storm up and down in frustration. It was the first time she had ever seen him look that determined. And when Paine was in a mood like that, even she wasn't safe from his anger.

"M- Master?"

"Silence!"

Ernestine sighed. Being a supervillain's apprentice was hard.

"You do know that-"

"I said silence!" Paine snapped before glancing away from her and returning to his dark thoughts. "Gavin's training them well," he muttered. "Too well. If they keep improving at the pace I think they're improving, we'll be defeated too quickly!"

Ernestine sighed. "If you'd listen to me-"

"We'd be defeated even quicker! Haven't you learnt anything from the past ten years? You're useless, that's what you are!" Beginning to let his temper go, Paine stomped towards Ernestine who yelped and backed away.

"I- I . . . was going to say th- that-"

"What? You're out of ideas?" Paine spat.

Ernestine gulped but bravely spoke "I have other abilities apart from creating monsters you know/"

Master Paine lowered his eyebrows. "Like what?"

"I- I can move objects with my mind and . . . I can shrink my own body," Ernestine whimpered. "And I'll show if you like . . ." She snapped her fingers and in a flash she was no bigger than a drawing pin.

Paine looked down at her and frowned. "How is that supposed to defeat the Energy Rangers?"

Ernestine snapped her fingers and turned back to her normal size. "What if I could use it to spy on the Rangers and find out their plans and weaknesses?"

"Hmmm . . ." Paine raised his eyebrows in approval. "That might just work . . ."

The apprentice exhaled a sigh of relief, glad to finally have one of her ideas appreciated. "Thank you Master."

"Don't thank me," Paine snarled. "Thank yourself for not having such useless powers. Now make yourself useful and get to work! I want every secret of those Energy Rangers!"

"Rangers. I need you to meet me in the lab immediately."

Callum, Zoe, Olivia, Alex and Jason looked up and exchanged glances. They had been in the middle of an intense all of nothing . . . four player video game. The Rangers that was except Zoe that was who had separated herself from her teammates to think over her fighting techniques.

Paine and Ernestine weren't the only ones worried about the Rangers getting stronger . . .

Nevertheless she stood up and turned off the TV. "You heard him. Immediately means immediately."

"Whoa!" Jason raised his eyebrows. "Since when are you suddenly so enthusiastic about a lecture?"

"Since when did you finally start paying attetnion? I'm always enthusiastic about Dr. Sparks' lectures," Zoe replied, sticking her nose in the air as she sautered off.

Jason looked a little confused. "She is?"

"Well she's definetaly more enthusiastic than the last few ones," said Olivia, frowning a little. "I think something's up."

Callum gave the pink ranger a look. "What is it?"

Olivia thought for a momen before answering "Haven't you noticed? Zoe's been really uptight since we gained our new energy powers. Either she's jealous or it's something more serious."

"Livvy's right," said Alex. "I've noticed it too. It started since Callum gained his Red Energy Laser Boost. She hasn't calmed down since."

Callum looked concerned. "I don't think it's just jealousy."

The others stared at him.

A mishievous grin spread across Jason's chest. "Something you know that we don't?"

Olivia nudged him with his elbow as if to say "Seriously, this isn't the time." Realising she was serious, Jason nodded and turned serious too.

"So what is it, man?"

The red ranger sighed. "I think Zoe might be a bit of a perfectionist."

Alex, Olivia and Jason leaned forward in intrest.

"Everytime we do something right and she does something wrong, Zoe treats it like a war crime," explained Callum. "From the Lightning Charger to breaking her wrist against that Isaac guy . . . all of it really. I've never seen anyone so determined. It's almost as if-"

As if on queue, Zoe stepped out, looking annoyed.

"Do you not know what the word 'immediately' means?"

The others quickly jumped to your feet.

Zoe lowered her eyebrows. "What were you talking about?"

"Nothing you'd care about, Olivia replied smartly.

The blue ranger just frowned but jerked her head towards the lab before heading off without a word. Her teammates exchanged glances before heading into the lab.

Neither of them noticed Ernestine teleporting into the same room, even when she chuckled mischievously. She was only the same size as a house fly, maybe smaller and chuckled again as she followed the Rangers into the lab . . .

Surprisingly, Dr. Sparks seemed a little more cheerful than usual. Usually when the scientist summoned the Rangers to the lab, it usually meant a mission or a serious lecture. But today, Dr. Sparks seemed much less intense.

"What's up?" asked Callum, interested.

Dr. Sparks grinned. "First things first, I'd like to congratulate you all on gaining your new powers. It took great courage for all of you to overcom your weaknesses. And for that, I'm very proud of you."

Zoe rolled her eyes. 'Proud of me for lazing about just to get a new power? Even the scientist can't conclude I should be leader of this team," she thought to herself.

"Anyway," Dr. Sparks continued, failing to notice the minature Ernestine sneaking in. "I have even better news for you. With these new enery powers, you are now all strong enough to take your skills to the next level."

The five Rangers pered up at this.

"Take our skills to the next level?!" Jason exclaimed in excitement. "How?"

Dr. Sparks' grin grew wider. "Well that's your mission."

At the word "mission", Jason, Olivia and Alex immediately slumped but Callum lowered his eyebrows and Zoe stepped forward, determined to find out how to increase her skills.

"What do we have to do?"

The scientist's smile slowly faded. He pulled out a map from underneath his lab coat. "Take this."

Zoe snatched the map off him and unrolled it without a moment's hesitation. The others quickly gathered around her to take a look.

"What is it?" asked Callum.

"It should show you the way to find your new abilities," Dr. Sparks replied.

Zoe frowned and examined the map closely. The map path looked almost like a child's scribbles on a wall. "What the- This is useless!"

"Useles is an understatement," said Dr. Sparks. "Your journey starts in the woods. That's all I'll tell you. The rest is completely up to you. Trust your instincts."

Zoe stared at him and opened her mouth to say something but Callum took the map off her before she could react and said "Come on. You guys heard him. We gotta find this energy before Paine hears about it and tries to find it before us."

Jason, Alex and Olivia nodded at this. Zoe, however looked like she wanted to punch the living daylights out of Callum. Nevertheless she scrunched up her face and reluctantly followed the red ranger as he began to lead them out of the lab.

And through all of this, Ernestine still hadn't been noticed but had been listening carefully to every single word.

'So there IS more energy power out there!' she thought to herself. 'And it's somewhere out in the woods . . . Should I-?' She paused. 'I shouldn't tell Paine. If I do, he'll only get mad if I don't retrieve it. I'll only tell him when I do.'

With that, Ernestine, leapt off.

"Give me that."

Zoe snatched the map off of Callum and began to read it closely. The Rangers had already arrived in the woods and had gotten lost even quicker.

"Hey! Take it easy!" Callum gave her a look. "You do know this energy power isn't all just for you."

"Tell me something I don't know," Zoe muttered sarcastically, continuing to read the map closely.

"Let me see." Olivia tried to step in but Zoe jerked away.

"No, no . . . I've got this," she lied. "The energy power should be . . ." She hesitated slightly before pointing ahead "This way."

The bue ranger smirked and stmped ahead. Callum, Jason, Alex and Olivia exchanged uncertain glances and followed them.

Behind them, Ernestine grinned and morphed into the Amazon Ranger before leaping up into a tree as if there were springs in her feet. She chuckled and looked up into the distance.

"I've got it first . . . this is gonna go my way."

The Amazn Ranger's grin grew wier behind her helmet and she began to leap from tree to tree, swifter than a monkey but quieter than a mouse.

"Okay girl. You have NOT got this," Jason said, trying not to smik as Zoe turned the map around for the third time. "Can't I at least-"

"No."

"But you didn't-"

"No, Jason!"

"You do know that-"

"Jason, I've got this!" Zoe snapped though it was obvious she hadn't got a clue how to read the map at all.

Callum rolled his eyes. "Zoe, let me see that," he ordered, reaching for it.

Zoe backed off, holding the map tight. "Oh so just 'cause you're the big Red Ranger, that means you're so important and have the right to boss us about!" She lowered her eyebrows and when she spoke her next sentence, her voice was ice cold.

"What makes you think you're so important, huh Callum? What makes you think you're more special than us?"

"Ohh! Tension!" Jason laughed.

Callum stepped up to Zoe and stared at her deep in the eyes.

"I don't think myself any better than others. I'm only doing what I have to do. I'm doing what's best for us. Just ask yourself the same question, Zoe. Ask yourself the same question."

Without another word, Callum grabbed the map from a speechless Zoe's hand and examined it closely. For once, Zoe didn't protest. She was too busy thinking about Callum's words.

The red ranger was examining the map closely, peering deep into the jagged lines. "This is getting us nowhere. It's just clouded."

"So now what?" asked Alex.

"Dr. Sparks said that the rest of the journey was completely up to us once we entered the woods, that we had to trust our instincts." Callum thought for a moment before concluding "I don't think we need this map."

"Yeah, I agree," said Jason, raising his eyebrows in approval. "That map was getting us nowhere anyway."

"I second that," grinned Olivia.

"Well if you're cool with this idea, I am too," Alex smiled.

The four of them turned to Zoe in hope of her approval.

Zoe sighed and raised her eyes upwards. "Fine." She stepped up to Callum and jabbed a finger in his chest. "But if we get lost in the middle of nowhere then I'm blaming you."

"We won't," Callum said in a determined tone. "I'm certain."

Zoe frowned. "I hate it when you get all determined like that."

Callum said nothing but tried not to smirk as he began to walk ahead of the others, closely followed by his fellow teammates . . .

Some Time Later . . .

The Energy Rangers had been walking for a while and they had found no signs of any energy power. Jason had tried to lighten up the atmosphere with a few jokes but it seemed that they were only funny to himself and only increased the tension. Zoe especially was becoming more and more restless as the minutes slowly turned to hours.

Enough was enough when they eventually reached what seemed to be the middle of nowhere, an area in the woods that was completely unfamiliar to all the Rangers.

"Great! We're lost! Happy, Callum?" Zoe sneered.

Callum didn't reply. He had stepped forwards and looked like he was focusing on something.

"Guys . . . we're near. I can sense it!"

Zoe nearly burst out laughing at this. "Oh, so you're Sensei now?"

"Zoe . . ." Jason mumured. "This might make you think I'm crazier than usual but I think he's right!"

"Surprise, surprise," Zoe muttered sarcastically. "Let me guess. It's right around the corner." As she said this, she pushed down a hedge as if to prove there was no energy power there.

FLASH!

A blinding light appeared from the bush, causing the Energy Rangers to cringe and scrunch up their eyes in pain.

"Zoe, what did you do?!" Alex yelled.

"I'm asking myself the same question!" Zoe grunted, trying to approach the light source.

"Get back!" Callum ordered. "We don't know what we're dealing with!"

"Guys, that could be the new energy energy Dr. Sparks was talking about!" exclaimed Olivia.

Jason tried to stare at her but his eyes were too sore to do so. "If that is the new energy power, it's definetaly a very strong one. We'd need sunglasses to deal with it!"

As if on queue, the light cleared away, allowing the Rangers to open their eyes in comfort. The light source had been coming from a golden trasure chest only a few metres from them. The light was now gleaming gently from inside.

"Whoa!" Jason raised his eyebrows. "Now THAT'S cool!"

"Well, what are we waiting for?" Zoe's tone was impatient but she couldn't help but smile in excitement. "Let's get it!"

She charged at the chest, closely followed by her teammates.

"Zoe, wait up!" Callum shouted after her but Zoe ignored him and skidded to a halt at the chest. However, her face quickly dropped as she saw that there was a little setback.

"It's locked."

"What?!"

The others stared at her then at the chest. Sure enough, there was a big fat padlock, keeping the chest shut tight.

"Let me see," said Olivia kneeling down and pulling out a hairclip from her pocket. She scrunched up her eyes and fidgeted around with it for a few moments before sighing. "The lock's too big for it to fit."

"So now what?" groaned Zoe.

Alex stepped forward and tried to pick the chest up. It was almost like trying to pick up a massive boulder. The chest would not budge no matter how hard Alex tried.

"We should try picking it up together," he suggested. "That might work a little better."

"Dude, do you know how long it would take to carry that and work our way out of the forest at the same time?" Jason asked. "We'd be up all night!"

"I agree with Jason," said Olivia. "We don't have the time. Why don't we use our Energy Morphers to transport ourselves to the lab WITH the chest?"

The others grinned in approval.

"NOW we're talking!" said Zoe, pulling out her Blue Energy Morpher and placing her hand on the chest. But the chest shone brighter and the energy power somehow shocked Zoe's hand.

"OUCH!"

"Whoa! You okay, Zoe?" Callum looked concerned.

Zoe quickly shook her hand and replied "Yeah, I'm fine. But this chest is being rebellious! Any more ideas?"

Callum opened his mouth to say something but was interrupted by a huge explosion that sent the five Rangers flying away from the chest and tumbling onto the grass. Stunned, they tried to climb to their feet but the pain was surprisingly worse than expected. Next thing, an all-too familiar voice filled their ears.

"Thank you, Energy Rangers. Paine will be so proud . . . of me!"

The five Rangers sat up only to see the Amazon Ranger dusting off her smoking hands . . . and heading straight for the chest.

"Oh no you don't!" Callum panted as he and the others immediately forgot about their sudden pain and climbed to their feet, their Energy Morphers out and ready to go. "If you want something, you have to fight for it first! Ready guys?"

"Ready!" the others replied in unison.

"Sports Energy, Suit Up!"

As the teens morphed, Ernestine tutted. "Must it all end in violence?" she chuckled before charging.

The Yellow Energy Ranger was the first to attack, swinging his Hock Hammer to strike Ernestine who dodged his weapon with ease. Alex then brought his hammer to the ground as hard as he could in an attempt to unbalance Ernestine. Unfortunately as he did so, she only backflipped over his weapon and struck him with a beam from her wrist before he could react. The beam caused Alex's Ranger costume to spark and send him flying.

"Alex!"

Enraged, the Pink Energy Ranger charged at Ernestine and used her Energy Vault to leap into the air in the Amazon Ranger's direction. But Ernestie laughed and revealed a newer power: she turned her arm into a blade and used it to strike Olivia as she dived towards her. The Pink Energy Ranger had been diving too fast so she couldn't stop her fall and fell to the ground as soon as Ernestine struck her.

"Get up, Pinky!"

Ernestine grabbed Olivia by the shoulder and hauled her onto her feet. Not intimidated, Olivia broke free and attempted to knock Ernestine over by swiping her Energy Vault underneath her feet. Ernestine responded by leaping into the air. Olivia was quick to respond to this but Ernestine was even quicker and pummelled her in the stomach with her foot. Like her brother before her, Olivia's Ranger costume sparked as she was sent flying. She crashed into a tree and tumbled to the ground.

"Livvy!"

Alex and Jason immedately rushed to attend her. As Alex helped her up, the Green Energy Ranger pulled out his Racket Blaster and shot bullets at Ernestine who defended them off like ping pong balls- which caused the bullets to shoot back at the three Rangers, knocking them back down. While they were on their knees, the Amazon Ranger shot a powerful beam from the gem in her chest. The beam was so powerful, it created an explosion that knocked Alex, Olivia and Jason back even farther.

Ernestine grinned- but was quickly stunned by a sneak attack by the Red Energy Ranger who zoomed past her with his Red Energy Laser Boost and struck her with his Lightning Saber. The Amazon Ranger let out a squeal and stumbled over as Callum skidded to a halt.

"YOU!"

"You need to speed up if you want to catch up on what happened to us during previous battles!" he teased.

The Amazon Ranger growled and charged at Callum- but once again he speeded past her, his Lightning Saber out to strike her, and again it caused Ernestine to stumble over, this time more uneasily. Frustrated, she growled again and glared at Callum.

"Want more?" he smirked.

Ernestine let our a roar. "Now you've made me mad!" With that, she charged towards Callum again. Callum raised his Lightning Saber and speeded towards Ernestine. But this time, Ernestine leapt out of the way before Callum could stop in time. Taken by surprise, the Red Energy Ranger lost his footing and skidded onto the ground.

The Blue Energy Ranger was already lashing out at Ernestine before she could chuckle at this. One slash of Zoe's Ice Blade was enough to knock Ernestine to the ground. As soon as she was down, Zoe raced towards the treasure chest, determined to keep it from Ernestine's grip at all costs.

"Get back here, you!"

The Amazon Ranger once again turned her hand into a blade and charged after Zoe, shooting beams from her fingertips to slow down the Blue Energy Ranger. This plan suceeded and Zoe stumbled over and whipped around just as Ernestine swung her blade arm at her. Zoe defended her arm off with her Ice Blade and glared at the Amazon Ranger through her blue helmet, breathing hard.

For a moment the two females started at each other in determination before Zoe snapped and raised her sword in an attempt to knock Ernestine over. But Ernestine must have seen this coming because as soon as Zoe raised her sword, she swung around and slashed Zoe in the chest while her sword was soon raised. Then, quick as lightning, Ernestine ran around Zoe, leapt into the air and kicked her in the chest, using it like a springboard to flip over, sending Zoe flying just like her fellow teammates.

As Zoe crash landed to the ground, the other four Rangers rushed to help her. While they were distracted, Ernestine shot the beam from her gem again, only more powerful, which caused a stronger explosion and sent the Rangers flying back further than before. They didn't demorph from the attack but it was certainly very painful.

Ernestine burst out laughing. "Pathetic, as usual!" she sneered and started sprinting towards the golden chest.

"NOOOO!"

Despite the pain she was in, Zoe still managed to climb to her feet. "BLUE ENERGY CHILL ATTACK!"

The Blue Energy Ranger thrust her hands out and the ground surrounding Ernestine immediately turned to ice. The Amazon Ranger had been running so fast, the ice caused her to slip and bang her head so it was lucky for her since she had her helmet on.

"What the-?" Furious, she climbed to her feet, just as Zoe was gliding towards her on the ice.

"Ice Blade!"

The Blue Energy Ranger let out a roar and slashed Ernestine as hard as she could with her sword. The slash was enough to knock the Amazon Ranger over again and cause her to fall to the ground.

Without bothering to look back, Zoe glided up to the golden treasure chest and grabbed the padlock.

"Come on!" she yelled, shaking it as hard as she could.

Ernestine was already climbing to her feet. "Don't you dare!"

Zoe examined the padlock and clenched her fist in frustration as she tried to figure a way to open the chest, failing to notice Ernestine charging behind her.

"ZOE!" Callum cried, trying to get up but the pain was too much for him. "LOOK OUT!"

Zoe whipped around and immediately shot a Blue Energy Ice Blast at Ernestine, blowing her backwards but not enouh to knock her over. Panicking, Zoe glanced at the padlock then remembered she was holding her Ice Blade.

Holding is up, the took a deep breath. "This has gotta work!"

Ernestine screeched and charged up the energy in her gem.

Zoe screeched even louder and with all her remaining strength, slashed the padlock as hard as she could with her Ice Blade.

And the padlock sparked and fell off.

The treasure chest blasted open with the energy inside of it, shooting out, stronger than wine shooting out of a bottle. It then pummelled downwards and exploded into Ernestine, just as she was about to strike Zoe, who had dodged in fright of the sudden explosion.

For the first time in the battle, Ernestine was sent flying backwards herself.

The Energy Rangers stared at this sight then at the golden energy that seemed to be forming the shape of a person.

"What the-" Alex seemed speechless.

"What the blazes what that?!" shrieked Olivia.

Jason seemed to be the only one amused by the scene. "I don't know but it looks awesome!"

The golden energy finally cleared away. In it's place was . . . a man who seemed to be in his mid thirties. He had tanned skin, brown eyes and short strawberry blonde hair with a short moustache and beard. He was wearing what looked like some sort of karate costume . . . well it had the black belt but the top was more like a brown and white overshirt with a long sleeved black shirt underneath. The man was also wearing black pants and black boots.

But what really caught the attention of the Energy Rangers was the lightning streak design on his shirt- it was very similar to the Sports Energy lightning streak on their Energy Morphers, without the shield of course.

The man took a moment to take in his surroundings, examining Ernestine and the Energy Rangers before nodding in satisfaction. He then glanced between Zoe and the other four Rangers and smiled slightly.

"That'll do. Leave the rest to me."

The Amazon Ranger was on her feet and staring at this strange man. "No . . . It can't be! Not . . . YOU!"

The man nodded. "Yes, it is me Ernestine. And you'd better believe me. Tell Paine I said hi."

He lowered his eyebrows and pulled out what was elmost exactly like the teens' Energy Morphers. This was a golden ball which looked way more advanced than theirs . . . the typical lightning bold and shield symbol looked far more powerful and advanced.

The man nodded again, held out this ball and chanted out a quote which once again was similar to the Energy Rangers' morph line only once again it was different. It was like:

"Olympian Energy, Gear Up!"

As soon as the man chanted out these words, the blinding flash filled the woods. The man's golden ball glowed violently and shot a beam backwards at the man which caused all of his body (except his hand and head) to turn completely white.

The man quickly threw his ball forwards before leaping into the air and performing several air twists. With each twist, the golden ball seemed to be breaking apart and shooting into him to form some sort of armour. As soon all of the golden ball had disappeared, the man landed hard but nearly onto the ground. He was now wearing what seemed to be a white and silver Ranger costume with golden armour. A white and gold helmet with a visor inthe shape of a shield appeared and covered his head completely.

Ernestine backed away as the new Ranger looked up and glared at her. The Energy Rangers couldn'd help but stare at him too. This was just amazing.

The new Ranger brought his feet together and clenched his fists.

"I am Finian, the Olympian Warrior," he announced. "I have returned after years of imprisoment from Paine. I seek revenge and justice. And I will stop at nothing to achieve my goals!"

The Amazon Ranger cringed and pulled out a silver ball. "Then you'll have to get through the FlunkBots first!" With that, she threw the ball into the air which opened and unleashed an army of the minions.

The Olympian Warrior, and Finian simply raised his fists and charged into the army. As he began to fight, Zoe rushed to reunite with her teammates who had recovered from their pain and were back on their feet.

"This is gonna get awesome!" Jasn laughed.

"You said it!" Olivia grinned.

"Yeah, it's about time we got some more help," said Alex happily.

Callum frowned slightly. He didn't know whether his mind was playing tricks on him or what but he was pretty sure he had heard that voice before . . .

Zoe didn't know how she felt. She was glad that she had protected the chest and all but if had unlocked a new Ranger stronger than her . . . That was not appealing to her at all.

Sighing a little, she watched as the Olympian Warrior grabbed a Flunk Bot and, clinging onto it swung around in circles, kicking other FlunkBots as he did so. He then flipped over and pulled out what seemed to be a ring of hoop of some sort.

"Olympic Ring: Frisbee Mode!"

Finian threw the ring which began to glow brightly and swing around, striking every FlunkBot in it's path and knocking them down like a Frisbee, hence it's name. The ring then swung back to Finian as he held out his hand and planned out his next attack, pulling out a second ring.

"Olympic Ring: Cuff Mode!"

The Olympian Warrior threw the two rings which expanded in size, glowed even brighter before opening and trapping a huge group of FlunkBots in both of them, like a pair of hand cuffs, leaving all of them helpless.

Ernestine cringed at this. While everyone was distracted, she turned her back and retreated, just as Finian pulled out a golden sword and a third ring.

He slotted the ring into the sword which caused it to catch fire, almost like a torch before leaping into the air.

"Olympian Slasher!"

The Olympian Warrior swiped down his sword three times, each slash leaving a line of flame which formed the shape of a shield. Still in midair, the Olympian Warrior slashed his sword one last time forming the lightning bolt shape, and sending the fire symbol shooting at the FlunkBots. The attack was so powerful, it caused the FlunkBots to spark violently. The Olympian Warrior landed neatly on the ground and turned his back on the FlunkBots, just as they exploded.

Checking to see there was no more danger, the Ranger nodded, satisfied.

"Power Down."

The Olympian Warrior morphed back to himself just as the Energy Rangers ran up to him and demorphed too.

"That was amazing!" Jason grinned as he, Olivia and Alex laughed admiringly.

Callum was also impressed with this new Ranger. "Yeah, that was pretty cool."

Finian smilled. "Thank you, Callum."

The Energy Rangers froze.

"How do you know our names?" asked Olivia, interested.

Finian's smile grew wider. "I know a lot about you. But this isn't the place. We need to return to Gavin. He's been worried sick. I'll explain everything there."

With that, Finian pulled out his golden ball and used it to transport him and the Energy Rangers out of the woods.

As soon as they were gone, Ernestine crept out from behind a tree and demorphed.

"It's true," she whispered. "He's back and more powerful than ever . . . I need to tell my master."
