"She Didn't Say Yes"

Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics Writer(s): Otto Harbach, Jerome Kern

She didn't say yes

She didn't say no

She didn't say stay

She didn't say go

She only knew that he had spied her there

And then she knew he sat beside her there

At first there was heard not one little word

Then coyly she took one sly little look

And something awoke and smiled inside

Her heart began beating wild inside

So what did she do?

I leave it to you

She did just what you'd do too

12:30 am., Thursday, January 15th 1931, The Ritz Theatre, Clearfield, PA.

Carlisle left the hospital at the end of his shift when he caught the scent of the strange vampire leading him to the brick faced Ritz movie theater in the center of town. The old theater was built in the 1890s and remodeled five years ago with hideous ceiling tiles but no balconies. Garish posters decorated outside and inside the building. There was a midnight showing of a crime movie called 'The Criminal Code' which seemed appropriate to the showy atmosphere.

Carlisle used his vampire speed to blur by the ticket taker and usher unnoticed. He entered the darkened theater noticing the meager audience of perhaps five people spread out through the auditorium.

The ancient vampire he searched for was seated in the center of the seats watching previews to upcoming movies. She was dressed in a blue dress and coat. Her raven hair upswept braids on top of the crown of her head. The coming attractions played for the movie "Dracula" as Carlisle sat in the empty seat next to her.

"Our kind used to be gods now we have become fictional characters played by humans in ridiculous face paint." Lamashtu snorted sardonically.

"You know more than I how absurd eternity can become." he replied.

"I do not understand your propensity to play with your food Carlisle Cullen." she smiled, "It seems like a waste of time."

"Lamashtu, why are you here? " he asked curiously, "Certainly not for the ambiance."

"I am intrigued by your coven, especially your Edward. He will be a powerful vampire in the coming centuries." she said.

"I will protect my family." he stated firmly, "Do not mistake my tolerance for weakness."

"I am not a danger to them." she replied, "You risking exposure while playing Doctor and Detective that puts them inperil."

"What do you know about these murders?" Carlisle asked.

"I'm surprised you haven't solved the case yet Detective Cullen." she said sarcastically, "I did come across the murderer's scent after he killed the reporter."

"I followed his trail to the railroad depot, but I lost him when he doubled back towards the town, his scent was lost in the crowds." she said with disdain.

"Time is running out, I have no doubt he will kill again soon." he said stoically.

"If these killings continue, they will attract the attention of the Volturi," she chided, "And that is the danger to your family."

"Lamashtu, will you contact me if you come across the killer's scent again?" he pleaded.

"Why should I?" she asked, "he will be dead if he crosses my path, it has been a long time since I drank the blood of such an evil one."

And then she vanished.

9:00 a.m., Thursday, January 15th 1931, The Clearfield Police Station.

Chief Hogan sat at the head of the conference table, Lieutenant Shaw was seated on his right. Sprawled on the left side of the table were Detectives Dupper and Haus both looking rumpled and dejected from a sleepless night. Officer Joseph "Van" VanBuskirk entered the office carrying a tall pile of folders, his excitement was palpable as he sat down to the table.

"I got those background checks you asked for Lieutenant," he said enthusiastically, his knee jiggling as he leaned forward to speak, "It took some time but I managed to dig up a few things."

"Van settle down and tell us what you found." Lt. Shaw replied.

Chief Hogan eyed the young Officer skeptically, nodding his head and waving his hand indicating for Van to continue.

"Clearfield's native sons: Elsworth Shaw Foster, Robert Archibald, Andrew Ratcliffe along with Wallace Caldwell left their sophomore year of college to fight in the war together." he said, "Mayor Caldwell was a pilot, the other three were army medics."

"In fact," Van continued excitedly, "Ratcliffe used to be in med school with the other two but he dropped out after the war."

"Other than noting that Ratcliffe also has some medical training they are all war heroes and pillars of our community." Chief Hogan stated almost dismissively, "What else have you got?"

"Well, nothing else on them just gossip and rumours," Van stated, "Dr. Archibald and Mayor Calwell are cousins, Ratcliffe married Doctors Shaw's sister-in-law."

"That's all you got?" Shaw scolded.

"On those three, yes," the junior officer continued, "but I'm saving the best for last."

Van spread out two folders that held police reports and photos.

"Principle Thorton is on the level, his credentials check out, although gossip around town says he maybe giving more than dictation to his secretary." Van said as he waggled his eyebrows, "If you get my meaning."

"Van!" Shaw started impatiently, "Who are the police reports on?"

"The music teacher, Ellis Michaels was arrested and convicted for embezzling money from his great aunt's estate, he got five months and two years probation, all time served. He even paid back all the money." Van cleared his throat and continued.

"The orderly, George Lehman has an arrest record going back more than ten years.
He has done hard time for blackmail, bootlegging, prostitution and soliciting young men." he stopped to take a breath, "And the state of New York has a warrant for his arrest for assault, some fight at a speakeasy."

Haus gave a low whistle and the others were quietly mulling over all the information. Shaw was the first to break the silence.

"Dupper and Haus, I want you both to arrest Lehman, pick him up for the assault warrant." he barked, "Van, I want you to bring in Michaels for questioning, while I go to the bank to question Ratcliffe."

Chief Hogan stood up from the table while looking over his men.

"Thank you gentlemen, I expect your reports on my desk when

you have finished." he said sternly, "Dismissed."
