Blaine pushed the shopping cart along and stopped when they reached the cribs. Kurt expected him to start examining them to pick one out, but he just stood there staring at them with big puppy dog eyes.
"Blaine?"
"Our baby girl is going to sleep in one of these."
"Yes, Blaine," Kurt laughed. "Why don't we get one?" He suggested.
Blaine's eyes went wide. "Really?"
"Why not? Look at all the stuff we've already bought for the nursery just today," Kurt said gesturing to the cart. "One more thing won't make too big of a difference."
"I know…it just seems like a really big step."
"Starting a family together is pretty much as big of a step as it gets, sweetie," Kurt teased.
"I know. I mean…a big step for having a baby. I just feel like it will make everything real."
"Well…maybe that's a good thing. Brittany's due in three months. We need to be prepared."
Blaine looked at him with adoration. "You're right. As always."
Blaine examined all the cribs carefully for a long time while Kurt hung back. When Blaine finally settled on one he wanted he asked Kurt's opinion.
"Whatever you want, baby."
Blaine's face suddenly turned angry. "That's what you said to everything all day. That's all you ever say about anything that has to do with our daughter. Do you not even notice that? Is this some kind of joke to you? I know that it doesn't necessarily matter what color her room is, but don't you care even a little? You're Kurt Hummel! You judge the displays in restaurants and the set-up of other people's homes but when it's our own daughter suddenly it's not important to you?"
Kurt looked completely taken aback. He stood their gaping for a moment before his phone began to ring. "It's Isabella," Kurt told him.
Blaine gestured for him to answer it.
"Kurt, I need you at work this second. It's urgent."
"On my way," Kurt told her and hung up. "I have to go."
Blaine just turned away. Kurt reluctantly left.
When Kurt got home late that evening he knew he was in for a long talk, but Blaine looked completely calm.
"Blaine – " Kurt began apologetically.
"Stop. Why don't you go take a shower? I know you've had a long day and I'd rather have this conversation with you relaxed."
Kurt gave him a grateful smile.
By the time he got out of the shower, he really was feeling relaxed. Maybe this conversation wouldn't be so bad. He took a deep breath. When he stepped out of the bathroom and saw Blaine however, his stomach dropped. Why was Blaine suddenly a complete mess?
"Everything okay, love?"
"Don't call me that," Blaine spat.
"Blaine," Kurt said slowly with concern, "I know I wasn't giving you the impression that I wasn't totally in this but you've got to believe me – "
Blaine sighed loudly making Kurt stop. "Do you honestly think that's what this is about?"
"I –"
Blaine snatched up Kurt's phone and Kurt raised a confused eyebrow. "Your phone went off when you were in the shower. I wanted to make sure it wasn't Isabella since you just got off and I didn't want you to get in trouble with your boss," Blaine paused for a moment after his voice cracked at the end.
"Blaine?" Kurt said brokenly.
Blaine began to read off Kurt's phone. "Kurt, it was amazing to see you. I'm not quite sure what it meant since last time I thought we were back together I was wrong. I'm really hoping there is still something between us. Give me a call. Parker," Blaine said his name with venom.
For a moment Kurt just stared at him brokenly before he remembered that he needed to speak. "Blaine – "
"That's all I needed to see," Blaine said shaking his head. "I need a few days away."
"Blaine that's really not necessary. I–"
"Kurt. I need some time."
Kurt nodded mutely.
"I'm going to stay at Lacey's for a few days."
"Not Santana's and Brittany's?" Kurt didn't know why he was focusing on this detail, but it seemed important somehow.
"I don't want them to know we're already fighting before the baby is even born. No point in putting extra stress on Brittany for no reason."
"You're not leaving me?" Kurt said in the tiniest voice he had ever heard himself use.
"Of course not," Blaine whispered to the floor.
"I didn't cheat on you," Kurt whispered back.
Blaine closed his eyes and took a deep breath. "We'll talk when I get back, okay?"
"Okay."
Blaine stepped forward and pressed a kiss to Kurt forehead before retiring to their room to pack.
Kurt closed himself in the bathroom and sunk to the floor. He was still crying there by the time Blaine left.
….
Blaine knocked on Lacey's door before even glancing down at his watch. It was almost eleven o'clock.
Blaine began spouting out an apology the second the door swung open. "Lace, I'm sorry I didn't even think about checking the time. I'm not really in the right state of mind. I just – "
Lacey pulled him into a hug then lead him inside. "My roommate is on vacation so you can stay in her room."
"I'll take the couch."
Lacey nodded having expected his unnecessary politeness. She made up the couch for him before giving him a sympathetic look. "He loves you."
"I know."
"You packed for more than one night."
"Yes."
"We can talk in the morning."
Blaine nodded.
"Don't even think about thanking me."
"You know me too well."
"Goodnight."
"Night, Lacey."
The next morning Lacey held true to her promise and awoke Blaine by eight.
"Early," Blaine muttered rolling over.
"My home, my rules. Pity party is over. Time to talk."
Blaine sighed sitting up. "You're right."
Lacey stared at him expectantly.
"I don't know if Kurt wants this."
"You? I beg to differ."
"It's not me…at least I don't think so…" Blaine said becoming nervous.
"Snap out of it. You don't need any more insecurity. Focus."
Blaine nodded. "I…I don't think he's ready for a family. Every time we discuss anything having to do with the baby, it's always my decision. It's like he just doesn't care about any of it."
"Why aren't you talking to him about this, Blaine?"
"Remember when Kurt and I slept together for the first time in years then got in a fight and…there was an ex-boyfriend…"
"This is going to be kind of difficult if you can't form sentences. But yes, Blaine, I remember. He hooked up with a different ex a few days after he hooked up with you."
Blaine flinched.
"I'm sorry," Lacey said quickly. "I don't mean to be so harsh. It's just very hard to get you to talk when you get like this."
"It's fine, it's fine. Anyway, Kurt and I had a fight about the baby and we were about to discuss it after he got out of the shower, but then he got a text from Parker."
Lacey closed her eyes sadly. "Go on."
Kurt, it was amazing to see you," began to recite. The words seemed to be ingrained in his brain. "I'm not quite sure what it meant since last time I thought we were back together I was wrong. I'm really hoping there is still something between us. Give me a call."
"Oh."
"Oh," Blaine echoed. "I just needed to get out of there. I don't think that he would cheat on me, but I wasn't a cheater either – "
"Stop. It looks bad, true. Give him a chance to explain himself."
"The thing is though, I don't think he cheated."
"You don't," Lacey repeated slowly in confusion.
"No, I don't. But Kurt didn't deny that he spoke with Parker. If Kurt needs to talk to his sleazy ex-boyfriend without informing him that he's engaged…There's clearly something he needs that I'm not giving to him. We're not even married yet, and I'm already not enough for him," Blaine let out an unexpected sob. "Am I ever going to be enough?"
"Blaine," she said softly taking his hand. "Of course you are enough."
Blaine shook his head and said nothing.
"You need to talk to him, Blaine."
"What if I'm right? What if I'm not enough? What if he leaves me?"
"Blaine, I have never met two people more meant to be together. If you two can't work it out then there's no hope for the rest of us."
Blaine offered her a weak smile. "I hope you're right."
