Every time I try to fly I fall, without my wings
He watched as she tried to go on with her life. Now that she was on her own, she really was on her own. Winter came and no matter how many layers of clothes she put on, it didn't make her feel safe. She needed a hug.
She tried, he would give her that, but he would see her tears, smell her sadness, see her shoulders fall.
One day she did something he didn't see coming. She went to a far off place, a field and brought her arrows. In the cold of winter, she let her power flow, she shot the arrows at nothing.
It started slow, but soon she was firing one after another, her sadness turned to anger, and soon she was spent and fell to her knees.
He could see her breath, he wanted to go to her then, but he held back.
Every time he thought she was moving forward, she stalled. A trip to the well, the firing of an arrow, a long night of tears.
Snow came, and she went to the tree of life.
Cold seemed to not bother her anymore. She seemed to spend more time outside.
She still hung out with her friends, but he could see the void, even with her laughter. Maybe she didn't belong here? Why wouldn't the well take her back? Maybe one day it would?
No. If that were the case, things would be different. Of that he was sure.
He hated holidays, they were the worst for her. But this Christmas he would leave her another gift in hopes to give her hope without giving too much away. What it would be, he wasn't sure yet.
He looked to the sky. How he wished to fly, maybe one day. He dreamed of flying again, really flying, not in a plane. Plane… maybe he should send her on a vacation?
He wished he could send her through the well, but for once in his life, he didn't have the power, he was powerless. He tried once, opening the well, he knew better because it never let him through, but he tried. He made his brother try too, it would not work for him either.
He wondered why the Kami's were so cruel to her. She saved the world from death and this was her reward?
He returned home and found a magazine of gifts at his door. On the front page was an ornament, it was of a flightless bird. Funny, they were both flightless now.
He knew what his one and only gift to her would be.
