Chapter 48: They Know

Kagome let her aura out in waves, searching for Kanna's. When she finally found it, she gasped softly. Kanna's already soft and gentle aura was weak and fading. Kagome stopped outside of the door where Kanna was being held. She took a deep breath and motioned for Inuyasha to kick the door open.

There was another white haired demon standing over Kanna. Her arms were chained to the walls, but she was crumpled on the floor. Her left eye was a disgusting shade of purple, and swollen shut. Her lip was busted and cracked and bleeding. Seeing her friend in this state send Kagome in a rage.

"What have you done?!" Kagome's voice was ethereal. Her body outlined in purple, and her energy spiked. She charged towards Hakudoshi and tackled him to the floor, igniting him in flames with her miko energy. She punched him in the face twice, knocking him out cold. Kagome stood up and ran to Kanna, where Inuyasha and Tsubasa were standing there in complete shock. Kagome had taken Hakudoshi down in a matter of seconds, and they had no time to even react. She didn't speak as she broke the chains with her hands and set Kanna free.

Hakudoshi groaned in pain and blinked himself awake. "Who…who the hell are you?" He stumbled to stand.

Inuyasha and Tsubasa were on the defensive, standing in front of Kagome and Kanna. Inuyasha turned when he felt a hand on his shoulder. Kagome wanted him to pick Kanna up, she was ready for them to leave.

Tsubasa didn't want to turn their backs on Hakudoshi, but that was what Kagome wanted.

"Answer me!" Hakudoshi yelled, as the four people left the large empty room. He half ran, half limped to them, but was met with a spiritual barrier.

Kagome turned to him then, her eyes fierce with fire and anger. "If I ever see you again, I will kill you on the spot, you spineless coward." She sent a wave of energy and pushed him backwards, sending him flying into the back wall of the room.

Once the four were in the car, Kagome let the anger that had been building in her heart turn into tears and let them loose. "Kanna," she whispered. "I'm so sorry I let this happen to you." She rubbed her hand on Kanna's face, healing her cuts and bruises. Kanna's body was soon outlined in Kagome's power.

Tsubasa drove slowly, then finally asked, "Where are we headed. Your house, or school?"

Kanna's eyes moved underneath her closed eyelids, and then fluttered open. "K-Kagome." Kanna began weakly. "You came for me." She smiled. "I knew you'd come."

"Of course, Kan. I'll always be here for you. You're my best friend." Kagome smiled. "Do you want to go to my house?"

Kanna shook her head. "No. I want to go to school. I want Naraku to know that he lost."

"That's my Kan. Go back to sleep while I finish healing you, ok?" Kagome said and Kanna nodded drifting off quickly.

"How much can you really heal?" Inuyasha asked.

"I can heal her physical wounds, and I can block her memories, which will take care of the emotional ones, at least for now." Kagome's hands glowed as she continued to heal Kanna.

A few minutes later, they arrived at school. They'd missed all of lunch and half of physics with Kanna.

"Wait. We need an excuse for being late." Kagome said.

"This isn't time to worry about your record, Kags." Inuyasha rolled his eyes.

"No, she's right." Kanna woke up and sat up straight. "Kagura will ask for an excuse for why we're late."

"We can go to Sesshomaru for a note." Kagome suggested.

"Good idea." Tsubasa agreed. They all got out of the car and walked into the school, heading for Sesshomaru's classroom.

"Wait!" Kagome exclaimed, and they all stopped. "He has a class right now."

"Shit. It looks like we're going to have to go to Kagura's class without a pass." Inuyasha said.

"No, we won't." Kagome was looking at her phone. There was a message on it from Sesshomaru, telling her to check her locker. He'd written them passes that morning, saying that they were doing a project for him and they would not only miss their first two classes, but would miss their fourth.

I wrote one for Kanna, too, because I knew you would be able to bring her back. Sesshomaru's message said. As much as Sesshomaru's confidence in her made her heart melt, that same heart had been broken by him. So there was no way she would be able to go back to him.

From her locker, Kagome got the passes and they hurried to class, to catch the last 20 minutes. Kagura's eyes narrowed when she saw Kanna with that stupid miko bitch and her half-breed puppy. The bear was annoying her, too. "Thank you for interrupting my class, Higurashi. And your friends, too."

The friends took their seats. "What did we miss?" Kagome whispered to Sango.

Instead of answering, Sango glared at Kagome and turned her head away.

"What was that about?" Tsubasa asked, and Kagome shrugged.

"Do you plan on disrupting my class even more with your talking, Kagome and Tsubasa?" Kagura sneered.

Sango snickered when Kagome got reprimanded. Kagome looked at her 'best friend' and wondered just what the hell was going on.

The bell rang but before Kagome had the chance to talk to Sango, she darted out of the room with Miroku's hand in hers.

"What the hell is wrong with Sango?" Inuyasha asked.

"I have no idea, but I know it can't be good." Kagome mumbled.

In Literature, things only got worse.

"Betrayal, students. How many of your have been betrayed?" Naraku asked.

Sango's hand shot up in the air before their teacher even finished asking the question.

"Ah, Sango. Would you care to share your story?" Naraku purred.

"Yeah. It didn't really happen to me, though. It happened to someone I know." She swallowed. "So this girl I know has a best friend and they've been best friends for their entire lives, pretty much. They shared everything with each other. But the girl, Mina, her best friend started acting weird all of a sudden. And Mina thought nothing of it at first. Her best friend was strange, and was always going through a lot of stuff. Come to find out, Mina's best friend was hiding a huge secret from all of her friends. She was dating their…er principal!" The class gasped, and Naraku smirked. "I know right? But anyway, since Mina's so-called best friend didn't tell her anything, she decided to drop her as a friend and never talk to her again. The end."

"Well…that's a very interesting story, Sango. Anyone else?" Naraku asked.

Someone else got up to tell their story of betrayal, but Kagome wasn't listening. She could only stare at Sango. Could she know? How could she know? Who would've told her. Kagome turned her head to Naraku and saw that he was staring at her from the corner of his eye. Of course he told Sango, but how?! And how was Kagome going to get out of this mess and keep her best friend at the same time?

Naraku taught his lesson and encouraged the students to research stories of betrayal, and report their findings the next day in class. The bell rang and Kagome walked to Sango to speak with her.

"Mr. Onigumo, I have a question for you." Sango walked to Naraku's desk.

Kagome stood in the doorway, but Sango and Naraku looked at her.

"You're free to go Higurashi-san." Naraku dismissed her. But before he did, the look in Sango's eyes, the look of pure hatred pierced Kagome's heart.

"Close the door on your way out." Sango said, and Kagome could hear the silent 'bitch' at the end of her statement.

Kagome stepped into the hallway and closed the door behind her. Inuyasha and Miroku were talking outside and Kagome walked up to them. "Is Sango ok?"

Miroku looked at Kagome with the same look that Sango had given her before he walked away.

"What the hell is going on?!" Kagome fumed.

"They know, Kags." Kanna said.

"What? How?" Kagome turned to her.

"I'll show you when we leave." Kanna was visibly upset and she was ready to leave.

"Alright. We'll go to Inuyasha's." Kagome pause. "Fuck. I have cheer practice. Whatever. Sango can handle it." Kagome pulled out her phone and texted Sango that she was in charge for cheer practice for the day.

Rushing off to play teacher and schoolgirl? Was the response that Kagome got from Sango. She showed Kanna, Inuyasha, and Tsubasa the text message and the four of them together uttered one word.

"Fuck."
