Teacher's Pet
Chapter 51: More Truths
Dinner was the most uncomfortable thing Kagome had ever sat through in her life. Well, it probably would've been if she'd been paying attention the entire time. The times she was paying attention, though, she was definitely annoyed.
'She sure is a bitch.' Kagome thought when Setsuki made yet another disdainful comment towards humans and haynou alike. 'That's probably why Sesshomaru rarely spoke of her.' She looked at Sesshomaru then and saw that his eyes were already on her. She looked down at her plate and blushed. It seemed that he really did love her. All of that hurt she'd felt just melted away. She looked up again and caught his eyes.
Sesshomaru was pleased with how things were going at dinner. Of course, he ignored his mother. A skilled he'd picked up when he was much younger. Instead, he focused on something more pleasant. Like Kagome. He caught her gaze from across the table and was pleased when she blushed. He knew that they still needed to talk, but this seemed like a very positive start. Soon he would be rid of that damned bear and his miko would be back in his arms, where she belonged.
"I wish you would stop looking at that filthy human and pay attention to me." Setsuki was irritated.
"Maybe if you were saying something worthwhile, he would." Kagome said off-handedly, still not really listening to Setsuki.
"Girl, do you not know who I am?" Setsuki snarled.
"I honestly don't care." She looked at Inuyasha's plate. "Are you done eating?" Inuyasha nodded and Kagome picked his plate up from the table, as well as her own and Sesshomaru's, then turned to the kitchen to do the dishes.
"How dare you turn your back to me?!" Setsuki forced her youki from her body towards Kagome. It hit her in the back, causing her to stumble forward and fall on her knees, dropping the plates in her hand.
"Mother!" Sesshomaru barked.
Setsuki scoffed. "She needs to learn her place. And that's on her knees before those better than her."
Inyasha, on the other hand, got up from the table and moved towards the stairs, away from his now irate miko friend.
Kagome rose from the ground, her hands glowing purple with her spiritual energy. "Bitch!" She turned around and walked towards Setsuki. "It would bode well for you to know your opponent before foolishly attaching them." Kagome punched the demoness in the face with help of her powers, successfully knocking her out cold. She looked back at the kitchen. "Now who the hell is gonna clean up that mess?"
"Inuyasha will. Do not forget that we have matters to discuss." Sesshomaru took Kagome's hand and led her up the stairs, pleased when she followed behind him silently.
"So…your mom is really something, isn't she?" Kagome said, nervously wringing her hands.
"In the time that I have come to know you, I have never seen you nervous. Why are you now?" Sesshomaru asked gently.
Kagome shrugged. "As much as thinking that you cheated on me hurt, it was so easy to write you off. It was easy for me to tell myself that I wanted nothing more to do with you." Kagome sighed.
"Perhaps I should start at the beginning." Sesshomaru stated.
Kagome rolled her eyes. "Ya think?"
"When I'd learned that Naraku had resurfaced, I grew…worried of his claim on you, his fascination with you." Sesshomaru admitted. Kagome heard the love for her that he had in his voice. Just him admitting that he was worried spoke volumes. "My mother, as annoying as she is, has her way with possessions. I thought to use her to posses Kagura, to turn her into a spy for us." Sesshomaru paused, noting that Kagome was paying attention, he continued. "During my visit with my mother, I spoke of you, obviously. And she made me…doubt. My father cheated on my mother with a human, which is the reason Inuyasha is here. But his mother, in turn, cheated on my father. My father ruined her, of course, and brought Inuyasha to live with us, constantly reminding both myself and my mother of my father's affair. And for her to cheat on him only spoke volumes about herself, and her race." Sesshomaru frowned, seeing the hurt in Kagome's eyes.
"That's why your mother hates humans." She whispered the realization.
"Yes. And it seems my father has a weakness for them. Almost every mistress he has ever had has been human. And all of them have eventually stepped outside of their 'relationship', if you will." Sesshomaru explained.
"You can't date a married man, Sesshomaru. So your father was never cheated on." Kagome said calmly. "But that still doesn't explain why you never told me about your mother."
"On my trip back, I stopped at a bar. I was still having my moment, doubting your race, doubting you, doubting us. At that bar, a demoness approached me. She tried to accost me." He felt Kagome's temper flare. "I allowed her to sit next to me and chat, but after a while, it became evident that I could not deal with her presence. I did not wish to deal with her, so I got up and tried to leave. That was when she grabbed my arm."
"If you tell me she kissed you, I'm going to find her and beat her ass." Kagome growled.
Sesshomaru smirked. "No, she did not. I simply left. It was after midnight."
Kagome nodded. "And you got here after that. But Sesshomaru, you could've just talked to me about it."
"I am aware of that. I was…weak for a moment. And I doubted you. For that, I am sorry, Kagome. And for causing you to think that I cheated on you, I also apologize." Sesshomaru's golden eyes bore into Kagome's blue ones and he only hoped she could see the truth in them.
"Sesshomaru I…I believe you. I believe everything you've told me." Kagome choked on her unreleased tears and threw her arms around Sesshomaru and cried into his chest.
Sesshomaru rooted his hands in Kagome's hair and gently pulled her head back so she could look at him. He slowly leaned down, fully prepared to claim the woman that he loved, but she took a step back.
"I can't." She cried.
"What?! Why not?!" He frowned. "Do not say it is because of that whelp of a bear."
"I'm dating said bear. It would make me a hypocrite to kiss you while I'm with him." Kagome took a step back, the close proximity making her knees weak.
Sesshomaru was shocked. "But you know the truth. How can you say that you're still with him?"
Kagome smiled gently. "Because I haven't spoken to him about any of this yet. I can't just be with you, and I'm still technically with him. Sesshomaru, I love you. And I know in my heart that I want to be with you and not Tsubasa, but I have to let him know that. Otherwise, this I wouldn't be any better than I thought you'd been these past few months."
Sesshomaru nodded in understanding. "I will not like the fact that I have to wait. But for you, miko, I will. Kagmome, I would give you the world. I love you."
Kagome's breath caught in her throat at the look of sheer honesty in his eyes. There was no way she could stay with Tsubasa, the love she had for Sesshomaru literally made her giddy. "I love you so much." She said, tears sliding down her face. There were no words to describe the feeling in her heart that she would once again be with the man of her dreams.
"Will you at least spend the night with me?" Sesshomaru asked, though he knew the answer before she spoke it to him.
Kagome shook her head. "You know I can't. There's no telling what we would do." A familiar heat pooled to the bottom of her stomach when she recalled her sex with Sesshomaru. Sure, Tsubasa was good, but Sesshomaru was…Sesshomaru. The two of them simply didn't compare.
Sesshomaru smelled Kagome's arousal and he wanted nothing more than to take her into his arms and make love to her for the rest of the night. But he knew that would not do. Instead, he said, "Come, let me walk you to the door." They walked downstairs and noted that Setsuki was still unconscious. "You really did a number on my mother. I must say that I am pleased."
Kagome rolled her eyes. "She's a bitch. In more than her birth."
"Indeed." Sesshomaru agreed. "Until next time, my beautiful flower." He bent and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, his breath washing lightly over her face.
Kagome closed her eyes against Sesshomaru's breath, her heart beating rapidly. She couldn't go back to Tsubasa's place with her mind on Sesshomaru. No, she would break up with him tomorrow. It was the right thing to do. Her heart still belonged to Sesshomaru and he was who she wanted to be with. It was going to be a piece of cake.
