Chapter 54: Coming Together
In the middle of the night, Kagome broke out into a cold sweat. She shot straight up in bed with a loud scream, waking Sesshomaru and her two friends up. Sesshmoaru, with red rimmed eyes, had Kagome in his arms before she was able to take her next breath.
"What is it?" He growled. Her aura was tainted with fear and anxiety, something that he was not used to feeling from her. And her skin was almost cold to the touch, though she was sweating.
Inuyasha and Kanna were at the door to Sesshomaru's room, wondering what was going on with Kagome as well.
"I-I don't know." Kagome shook her head. She couldn't remember the dream she was having, but she knew that it was bad. Very, very bad. And it had something to do with…"Tsubasa. He's up to something."
Sesshomaru snorted. "The bear punches like a cub. Inuyasha hit harder than him when he was a pup."
Kagome blinked. "What? He hit you? When?"
"The day you broke up with him. He came here and sucker punched me. He told me that I am the reason you left him. Pathetic fool." Sesshomaru spat.
Kagome shook her head. "No, don't underestimate him. He's smart. And he's hurt. That means he's capable of anything and-"
"Naraku." Kanna said gently.
"What?" Kagome turned to her void demon best friend.
"He's teamed up with Naraku, now. That's his only option." She told them.
Kagome thought for a second. What could Naraku use against her. "Sango!" She scrambled to get her cell phone and pressed Sango's speed dial number. "Pick up. Pick up. Pick up. Please pick up."
"Hello?" Came Sango's groggy voice.
Kagome could have cried, she was so relieved to hear her. "Sango, I'm coming to get you. Stay on the phone with me, okay?"
"What's going on?" Sango was fighting the urge to go back to sleep.
"I'll explain later." Kagome quickly got dressed. "Yash, Kan, you two call everyone else. Round up the gang and bring them all here."
"What are you gonna do?" Inuyasha asked.
"What I should've done in the first place. I'm telling them the truth. We did it for Sango, to keep her out of harm's way, now we don't know what Naraku's planning."
Less than an hour later, all of Kagome's friends were in Sesshomaru's condo, very angry and very tired. Kagome masked their auras and scents, also placing a sound barrier around the condo so no one could hear anything that they were saying.
"Ok guys, listen up. I have something important to tell you. But what is said here does not leave this room, ok? It's very important." Kagome said.
"What the hell's goin' on? I don't like being woken up by dog breath over here." Koga growled.
"Shut up, shit for brains, and listen to Kagome." Inuyasha told him.
"So, first, I want to apologize for lying to all of you. For a while, you guys thought Inuyasha and I were dating, when we, in fact, were not. Inuyasha and Kanna both knew who I was dating, and they promised to keep it a secret." Kagome started slwowly.
"Who were you dating?" Ayame asked. She was the last to have been picked up, Kagome wondering whether or not she was able to trust the female wolf demon, but in the end, Sango had told her that if anything happened, Kagome could easily overpower Ayame and take care of it.
Kagome took a deep breath. "I was dating Mr. Taisho." She closed her eyes and shrunk into herself at the remarks of outrage from her friends.
"What the hell! You knew that we all had a crush on him!" Ayame exclaimed.
"Who is 'we'?!" Koga fired back.
"Hey! Why don't you shut the hell up and let her finish talking!" Sango snapped at them. "This is more serious than Kags dating our teacher. Much more serious. So shut up and listen."
They quieted down and Kagome told them what she'd told Sango a few days prior. She started from the beginning and stopped at her breaking up with Tsubasa.
"So what's the problem? Beside we gotta kill Mr. Onigmo." Koga grunted.
"We don't know what he's up to right now. I really think that Tsubasa may have joined up with Naraku in some way. And I couldn't have them using you guys against me." Kagome sighed.
"Yeah. That would royally suck." Sango gave Kagome a small smile and hugged her. "Look, I don't care if you agree with anything that Kag's has said. What's important is that you all prepare for what is to come. If you hear anything about Kagome and Mr. Taisho, the rest of us need to know it, too. That's the only way we can beat this thing, whatever he has planned."
"How do you know that he has a plan?" Miroku asked.
Sesshomaru finally came from his room and stood behind Kagome, silently giving her his strength. "The spider is nothing if not a tactician. In the past when I have dealt with him, he has always planned things out, though he has never had contingency plans. The miko telling you all this—against my better judgement—" he added, looking down at Kagome, "is something that he has not prepared for, so it could possibly be a boon."
While her friends were talking downstairs, Kagome went upstairs to Inuyasha's room, where there were two more people.
"Kags, what's going on?" Sota asked his older sister.
Kagome looked at the two little boys, both of whom she saw as her younger brothers. "I need you guys to trust me and Sango, okay? We promise we won't let anything happen to you."
"Is this about you dating your teacher?" Sota asked.
Kagome nodded. "There's someone who is trying to take me from him, but he wants to hurt as many people as possible in the process. Which is why you two aren't gonna be out of our sight for a while. Sango or I will drop you off at school and one of us, or Inuyasha will pick you back up and bring you back here. The most important thing is that you don't listen to anyone that's not us, okay? I know that you know Koga and Ayame, too, but the main people are gonna be me, Sango, Inuyasha, Sesshomaru, and maybe even Kanna."
"What about Tsubasa?" Sota had seen the bear demon on a few occasions.
Kagome shook her head. "Definitely not him! Look, if he even comes near you, run away. Scream. Do whatever you have to do. But do not trust him, got it?"
The two boys looked at each other, then nodded.
"I love you guys." Kagome hugged them, then let them go back to sleep and rejoined her friends.
"So are we all gonna be staying here?" Ayame asked.
Kagome looked at Sesshomaru and he nodded slightly. She turned back to her friends. "I think that would be best. To make sure that everyone is safe."
"What about our parents?" Miroku was concerned.
Kagome shook her head. "I don't feel like he'd go for your parents. That's too much extra work to go after them. He wants Ses…Mr. Taisho dead. Possibly Inuyasha and Kan, too. He doesn't really want to hurt any of you, just me. Anyone else is just too much." Kagome could feel the stirrings of a headache. She really wanted this entire nightmare to be over, but she was grateful for her friends. They seemed to be understanding. 'Seemed', being the operative word. It wasn't until later that night that she realized they weren't as understanding as she thought.
"She's been screwing our teacher? What kind of sick shit is that?" Koga whispered to Ayame.
"Yeah. And she lied to all of us about it! I don't want to be a part of this mess!" Ayame sneered. "Then she broke up with Tsubasa on Valentine's Day. Talk about a cold hearted bitch."
"Guys, come on. Give her a chance. This isn't easy for her. Did you not hear the part about Mr. Onigumo trying to rape her? And him actually kidnapping Kanna?!" Sango couldn't believe her ears. Her friends were actually turning their backs on Kagome? What the hell was wrong with them?!
"He probably thought she was easy. Hell, if you sleep with one teacher, you'd sleep with all of them." Came from Ayame.
"Oh yeah. You're such ha saint. You remember you tried to put a spell on him." Sango was completely disgusted.
"I was going through shit and we all know that." Ayame defended herself.
"Bullshit." Sango spat. "You're just mad because you wish it was you that Mr. Taisho wanted."
"Okay, and I don't. What about me? What's my problem?" Koga countered.
"You've been after Kags for years. Don't act stupid. Ayame, Kagome has dealt with a lot, and I do mean a lot of shit from you over the years, and if you turn your back on her the one time she actually needs you, then you're a worthless piece of shit. And Koga, the shit you've done to her over the years can be labeled as sexual harassment, and in my eyes, that makes you no better than that sick fuck Mr. Onigumo." Sango frowned and shook her head. "I was pissed when I first heard about it, too, but I was pissed and misinformed. I can't believe you two have the facts and you're still acting like fucking idiots." Sango got up from the couch and went into the kitchen, where Kagome was sitting on the floor, her back against the wall, crying silently. "Oh Kags. I'm so sorry you had to hear any of that." Sango immediately wrapped her arms around Kagome and let her friend cry onto her shoulder. She rubbed soothing circles into her best friend's back and let a few tears out herself. She and Kagome had been friends for so long, she could practically feel the pain radiating off of Kagome.
In the living room, Koga and Ayame looked at each other. They knew that Sango had been right, but they were too ashamed to admit it. They heard Kagome's muffled sobs and felt even worse. She'd never asked for any of this to happen to her, it just did. And Kagome had helped them in times where even they'd given up on themselves, so why couldn't they be there for her? Could they truly call themselves her friend?
Sango guided Kagome back upstairs where finally cried herself to sleep. "What are we going to do, Mr. Taisho?"
"I do not know. But I promise no harm will come to any of you." Sesshomaru said, looking at Kagome.
"You really love her, don't you?" Sango asked.
"With every fiber of my being." He finally looked Sango in her eyes.
"Well you know that you have mine and Miroku's loyalty. I know that you will protect her." She turned to leave his room. "And we're better have an A in your class at the end of the year." She tossed over her shoulder with a smile.
Sesshomaru allowed himself to smile back at her as he closed the door and crawled back into bed with his tiny miko. "You and your loved ones will not see any harm, this I vow to you." He bent and kissed her head.
The next morning, Kagome awoke groggy and rather cranky. She'd barely gotten any sleep and was plagued with nightmares. Sesshomaru was already in the shower so Kagome slipped in with him, pleased when he massaged a lot of the tense muscles in her back. They kissed hotly under the fall of water for several moments before Sesshomaru pulled away and washed Kagome's body with her favorite body wash.
Downstairs, as an apology for what they'd said the previous night, Ayame and Koga had made pancakes and bacon.
"Hey Kags, I'm really sorry for last night." Koga started as soon as she stepped foot into the kitchen.
"Me too. I was just jealous that you got to be in a relationship with the hottest guy on the planet." Ayame said. Though she was sorry for what she'd said, she still wasn't sure if she was ready to go to war for this.
Kagome gave a weak smile. "Thanks guys."
"So here's the deal. You don't know anything. Act like everything is the same." Sango told their friends.
"Are you two still gonna act like you hate each other?" Miroku asked.
Sango looked at Kagome, that was a good question.
Kagome shook her head. "We have to assume that if Tsubasa has allied himself with Naraku, that he already told him that Sango knows. But he doesn't know that you all are here. I've been hiding your scents and auras all night. And there has been a sound barrier around the condo all night, too."
"Kagome, that's a long time to keep something like that up. You can't do that to your body." Sango's voice was laced with concern.
Kagome shrugged. "I have to protect all of you. I brought you all in this mess."
It was then that Ayame realized just how selfish she was being. Kagome was willing to drain her energy just to protect them because she'd fallen in love with their teacher. Just because some psycho wanted her to be in love with him. She vowed then that she would have Kagome's back no matter what she needed.
Kagome looked around the room and saw the faces of people that she would die for staring back at her. "I love all of you. And I'm sorry that I caused this." She turned and left the room, going back upstairs to Sesshomaru. The look he gave her chilled her to the bone. "What's wrong?"
"I just received an email from the principal. I am suspended until further notice, surrounding rumors of me dating a student. I am not to attend my classes today, and I have a meeting with the principal and the school board this afternoon." Sesshomaru gave Kagome his phone so she could read the email.
"Kags!" Sango burst into Sesshomaru's room. "Something's wrong with Sota! I dropped the boys of at school but Kohaku texted me and said that he didn't come to first period."
Kagome gave Sesshomaru his phone back and pulled out her own, quickly calling Sota. The phone rang three times, then picked up and she heard him scream her name in the backround. Kagome's blood ran cold and she dropped her phone.
That was it. Kagome had reached her breaking point. She stormed out her room and raced up the stairs to the seventh floor. She didn't bother knocking on the door, she just burst through it with her powers. Before he had a chance to react, Kagome had him in the air, her eyes completely pink and her powers flowing around her.
"Where the hell is my little brother?"
