Thanks for the reviews on the previous chapter!

Raditz looked over to the younger warrior and held out his hands.
Gohan gave Raditz one remote back but he wasn't done with his own remote yet. "This actually looks a lot like the control panel in the space pod itself." He remarked.
"That's because it basically is a small version of the control panel in the pod. In that way you can still control the pod when you lose the remote. You only lose the option that makes the pod come to you." Raditz responded.
"Ah…" Gohan nodded once. "Interesting."

Vegeta sat down on a branch and yawned again. He frowned as he looked around. What was taking the brat so long? He noticed a small rodent and he pointed his finger at it. A purple beam shot right through the rodent, killing it instantly. Vegeta smirked as he got up to fetch it. That would make a nice waiting snack.
The man lazily ate the flesh of the rodent as he waited. He left a small bit for the half-saiyan. The young warrior would appreciate that. However, when Vegeta finished eating Gohan still wasn't there. The saiyan prince frowned as he got up and looked around. "Half-breed! What is taking you so long?" He snarled. The man reached up to scan for Gohan's power level.
Vegeta widened his eyes when the scouter could not find Gohan's particular energy level. The man opened the line of communication to the half-saiyan. "Half-breed. Come in…. Are you there...? If you don't answer now I'll have your balls for dinner, brat!"
Vegeta waited for a few second as he realized what was happening. The Saiyan prince opened the communication line to the other two Saiyans. "Raditz. Nappa. Half-breed is gone."
Chapter 24. A Half-breed's Life On The Run.
Gohan smiled as he surveyed the planet he just landed on. The planet was beautiful. Oh how beautiful planets could be when you didn't have to destroy them. The young warrior spent some time exploring the woods. The plants and leaves on the trees seemed to be a violet color. The sky was perfectly white.
The half-saiyan sat down near a stream and pulled out his map. The small machine worked on solar-energy and was made to adapt to every sun in the entire universe. The half-saiyan could feel the sun of this galaxy warming his skin so this device should get enough energy from it. The young warrior smiled when the machine activated and a projection of a part of the universe that was discovered and mapped out appeared in front of him.
"Alright." He muttered to himself. "I am now here." He tapped a planet that was floating near the sun of this galaxy. "Where to go…" He glanced at the planets. After this he looked around. Why not stay here?
The young warrior hesitated. He was still pretty close to where he lost his comrades. Then again, they probably assumed he would go to planet Earth. He expected that they were already on their way there. The young warrior allowed himself to worry about his mother briefly. Part of him was afraid that they would actually go to planet Earth and torture his mother even if they couldn't find him there. Another part of him realized that if they went to planet earth and killed his mother or destroyed the planet, they wouldn't have the planet to blackmail Gohan with anymore. The planet was too useful to destroy. All Gohan needed to do was stay out of Frieza's army's way. That shouldn't be too difficult, should it?
Gohan nodded as he got up. He could stay here for a couple of months and then move on to the next planet. He disconnected his space pod so he should be safe from that tracking systems. First thing to do was to build a shelter. Luckily, Gohan had been through survival training. The cadets in the training camp were taught how to survive with no electricity or devices in case they stranded on a planet.
As the day went by, Gohan made sure there were no cities or even houses near his little hide-out. After making sure he had the place to himself, Gohan first made a small make-shift shelter with a couple of thin branches and leaves. He could find shelter here as he built something more durable. As night fell, Gohan went on the hunt for food. He kept himself from eating the fruits he picked right away and went through the tiring and long routine of making sure they weren't poisonous by first rubbing a couple of them on different places on his skin. He would have to leave that on for some time in order to find out whether or not it they would cause a rash. If that was the case, the chance was likely that they were poisonous and Gohan wouldn't even take the risk.
At night the half-saiyan spent the evening looking up at the stars in the sky, wondering how many space pods were flying by this planet at the moment. When it started to rain, the young warrior quickly moved to his shelter and curled up on the ground. He turned on his stomach, leaned on his elbows and drew figures in the sandy ground. It wasn't long before he fell asleep, exhausted after a long day of work.
Gohan was surprised at how easy the refuge life was for him. He travelled the planet he landed on, moving from place to place and setting up temporary camps here and there. The young warrior quickly realized that the inhabitants of this planet were not like him at all. He would stand out very much if he tried to go to the towns or villages. That's why he decided to go to the towns at night. Making sure nobody was around; Gohan broke into a fashion store and stole a basic t-shirt and pants. He decided to take a warm vest as well since he had to survive the winter on this planet. It was still summer-ish right now but Gohan knew there had to be some kind of winter season at some point.
Getting rid of his uniform and armor was something that Gohan planned from the beginning. There was always a possibility that he would run into soldiers from Frieza's army so if he did they would not recognize his outfit. He was not a soldier any more. He was just a normal kid, trying to make the most out of his free life.
One morning Gohan was gutting a fish… Well… He considered it what he called a fish. The species lived in the water and it was slimy and slippery in his hands. It tasted different from the types of fish he had eaten before but it wasn't poisonous. He learned this after eating a tiny piece of a fish one day, leaving the rest for a big carnivore that was eying the fish. After not getting sick from that tiny piece, Gohan dared to eat a larger piece two days later and he allowed the pieces he would eat to slowly grow until he ate the entire thing every time he caught one.
The half-saiyan licked his lips as he studied the corpse. It would hopefully be extra delicious if he threw on the spices he stole from a supermarket the previous night. The young warrior looked up when he heard sounds of speech. Gohan made a face, quickly gathered everything and flew up to the tree where his tent was casually balanced on a large trunk. After almost getting caught in his sleep a couple of times, Gohan decided he would have to create treehouses which he could sleep in without being seen by any nightwalkers.
Gohan made his body comfortable on a branch and leaned against the tree trunk so he could watch the passersby from there. They appeared to be a group of adults. They were looking around as if they were searching something and calling out one word every so often. Gohan couldn't understand the language, neither in writing nor in speech, but he did realize that the same word continued to be called out. Was it a name? Were they looking for someone?
They were quite deep into the woods here. The sun was having a field day in this clearing but when moving away from the clearing the surroundings would get darker because the trees would not let sunlight through that easily.
Gohan shifted uncomfortably as he watched the people search the area. He hoped nobody would look up. If that happened he would have to run for it. He certainly didn't want to fight the civilians on this planet. Luckily for the half-saiyan, the people slowly but surely moved away without noticing him at all. Gohan waited until he was certain they were far enough away from him before allowing his body to drop down from the tree. That was a close call.
That evening Gohan decided to lay low and not create a fire. People might still be searching the woods and a fire would direct them right to him. Not a good idea. The half-saiyan considered leaving these woods and moving to some other place but he rejected that idea. He liked these woods for no particular reason.
The half-saiyan prepared himself a cold dinner made up entirely from fruits. At least it was healthy…. The young warrior blew out a sigh as he leaned back on his hands and studied the silent pond in front of him. Silence… Such an amazing thing. He adored silence. It had been so long since he was allowed to experience complete silence… Well… the sounds of nature were still going on around him yes... He heard a growling sound in the distance... Rustles here and there, telling Gohan's instinct that there was prey around, but he didn't feel like hunting right now.
The half-saiyan slowly lied down on the soft grass. He let out a sigh as he looked up at the sky. Gohan closed his eyes in order to take a nap but a rustle caught his attention. This didn't sound as the usual rustle caused by the prey animals. The half-saiyan sat up and peered towards the bushes around him. Strange…
Gohan got up and stretched his limbs before fully turning to the offending bushes. He moved up his hand and made a motion as if waving someone closer. A cry sounded as a small alien boy fell right out of the bushes and landed in front of the half-saiyan. Gohan knew that this wind manipulation skill would come in handy even when handling civilians. The young warrior placed his hands on his hips as he studied the boy. He was hardly older than Gohan. What was such a young kid doing in the woods on his own?
Then again, a thought crossed his mind, Gohan was about his age. What was a kid like Gohan doing out on his own in the woods? The half-saiyan shook his head to get these thoughts out of his head before returning his attention to the young boy in front of him.
The boy looked wasted away and as the boy's eyes absentmindedly wandered off to Gohan's stack of food, Gohan realized that the civilian was going for Gohan's food. The boy must be absolutely famished if he was willing to take an alien on for food. Gohan blew out a sigh before walking to his food stack. The half-saiyan grabbed a couple of fruits and tossed them in the direction of the boy. After this he pointed to where the alien came from. The boy seemed to get the message and grabbed all the fruits before heading back to the bushes.
Gohan smiled before slowly shaking his head. Honestly, why would people choose to live alone in the woods if they apparently had a family looking for them? Nothing could be important enough to leave one's family for.
The young warrior sat down on a branch and thought about his own family. Would he ever see them again? He knew that the journey towards planet earth would be dangerous. There was a large chance that either the Saiyans or other warriors from Frieza's army might find him. What would he do if they did find him? Would he fight them one last time and make it a life or death situation? Or would he go with them silently?
Of course he would never go with them silently… But he wasn't sure if he was really willing to give his life for freedom… There will always be a new opportunity. Things would eventually clear up. Giving up his life would only be a waste.
The young warrior blew out a sigh. Then again, what kind of life would it be? If the saiyans got a hold of him again they would probably treat him like they treated him when he just joined them. He would have no freedom at all. He would have to spend every waking moment with those bastards… That was something he did not want to do.
Gohan shook his head again. There was no time for sulking. The future would come to him soon enough. He had to focus on the here and now. Gohan got up and decided to see if he could gather some more fruit. He lost some of it to the young boy and he wasn't planning on eating a light meal tonight.
**** Frieza's Ship ****
"Lord Frieza. We've come to announce that planet Kwamo has been purged successfully." Vegeta stated as he looked to the ground. Raditz and Nappa were kneeling behind the saiyan prince.
"I see. Dear Vegeta, I seem to miss one of yours. Has he been beaten up so much that he needed to consult the rejuvenation tank?" Frieza asked curiously.
Vegeta considered lying but he knew Frieza would find out eventually. The man asked for Gohan to meet him often enough. Same went for the Ginyu Force and Zarbon. Vegeta would only get in trouble if he lied to Frieza now. "No sir. We lost the boy."
"He died?"
"No. He… He left the planet without our permission." Vegeta decided to just throw it out there. The whole situation was a huge blow to his pride and if he ever saw that runt again, the boy would pay for it dearly.
"He left the planet without your permission." Frieza repeated slowly. "So, he ran away?"
"Affirmative, sir."
"Oh dear." Frieza turned to his henchmen. Zarbon and Dodoria were casually standing next to Frieza, as always. "Zarbon, it seems your favorite monkey has lost its way. That's too bad, isn't it?"
"Indeed, sir. And I had such entertaining plans in mind too." Zarbon said in a successful attempt to play along.
"We'll make sure to keep an eye out for the boy." Frieza stated as he looked back to the Saiyans. "We mustn't let one of our own all alone out there, right? The Ginyu Force might be up for a little game of catch the monkey." He suggested as he leaned back on his seat.
"All due respect, lord Frieza." Vegeta said carefully. "We will take care of it."
"Apparently, you can't. Since you let him go in the first place." Frieza sent a cold glare into Vegeta's direction. "It's a child, for goodness sake, Vegeta. How could you not manage to tame a child?"
Vegeta lowered his gaze. He was put back in his place effectively by Frieza's words. He allowed an eleven-year-old boy to escape from his clutches. He'd been too easy on the boy. He allowed Gohan too many little freedoms and now he paid the price for it.
"Why are you still here?" Frieza snarled at them. "Get out of my sight."
The Saiyans bowed one more time before getting up and heading to the entrance. Vegeta went first as they headed for their private quarters. The man hardly even responded at first when Raditz started talking to him. "Vegeta? Are we going out to look for him right away?" He asked quietly.
"We might not even have to…" Nappa added. "If Frieza sends the Ginyu Goons after the boy we might have him back within a week."
Vegeta stopped and turned sharply. "Do you really think those idiots will be able to find the boy faster than us?" He snarled. "Of course not. We know how he thinks. We know what he's going to do. If anyone can find that runt, it will be us."
"So what do you want to do, Vegeta?" Raditz asked.
Vegeta lowered his gaze to the ground as he considered this question. "We're going after him. He must be headed for earth but the journey to that stupid planet should take him about two years. We'll have to try and catch him during that trip. But he's probably months ahead of us already…" The man growled in annoyance. "I calculated the best possible planet he would go to in order to stack up on food and water. That planet is called…" Vegeta consulted his scouter, "Ikoa. It's a two month journey. Enough time to finish the food he had with him. Close enough to quickly decide to steer to. It's one of the few planets that haven't been purged yet. It's on the list, though, so it won't take long."
"Planet Ikoa?" Raditz repeated. "Good. Let's go there right away."
Vegeta nodded in response and turned so he could lead his comrades to the space pod center. They were ready and eager to hunt their youngest member down. Now it was just a matter of time.
As Vegeta made himself comfortable in a space pod, he looked up at the darkness around them. Stars shot by casually as the space pod quickly made its way through the universe.
"You can't run forever, brat."

"You can't run forever, brat."
Gohan woke up with a start. The half-saiyan looked around with wide eyes before he realized he was back in the forest. On planet Ikoa. Safe and sound. Gohan growled as he placed his hands against his forehead. "Get. Out. Of. My. Head." He muttered as he gently bumped against his skull with the palm of his right hand.
The young warrior decided he wasn't going to sleep any time soon and he jumped down to the ground. He needed to find something to eat.
Gohan stretched his arms as he headed for the stream that was close by. The half-saiyan dipped his cupped his hands in the stream and threw some water in his face. The young warrior blew out a sigh. He was getting sick and tired of these nightmares. When were they going to end?
The half-saiyan decided to keep his mind occupied by making himself some breakfast. He gathered a small amount of the fruits he found yesterday and cut them into a fruit salad. The half-saiyan let out a sigh as he ate the salad. He had been on this fruit diet for several days now. He hadn't been able to catch an animal for days now. There was a reason for that. Yesterday Gohan noticed a space ship flying through the sky. He gauged the powerlevels in the ship and realized the Saiyans were not present.
Therefore Gohan decided not to leave the planet just yet but he had to be careful so he was not using his powers at the moment. That being said he now realized just how difficult it was to catch living beings without his powers. He was taught how to create traps back in camp but he had forgotten a lot and the animals on this planet appeared to be too smart to fall for his traps easily.
The arrival of the unknown soldiers did make Gohan realize that he had to leave this planet soon. He'd been staying there for two weeks now. It was time to move on to the next destination. Gohan was dreading this though. He felt comfortable on this planet. He was not looking forward to getting back into one of those hated space pods. He could make it work like this for a couple of more days, he told himself.
However, the decision was rapidly made for him as he looked up at the sky several days later. The space ship was on the move again and now moved to a spot way too close to the half-saiyan. Gohan knew that if these people had scouters, they would be able to track him from such a short distance. Besides, he didn't want to run the risk of running into them or them running into him.
So Gohan waited for a couple of hours as he gathered all his belongings and his food before moving to his space pod. There he took one deep breath before climbing into it. He told himself to stay calm as he set the coordinates for the next planet. The journey would take about a month. As the space pod headed out into the darkness of space, Gohan pressed the button that would put him to sleep. There was no need for him to worry about floating in a vacuum for an entire month, now was there?
**** Planet Ikoa ****
"Prepare for landing."
Vegeta leaned back in his chair as the space pod started vibrating gently. The man was impressed with this new type of space pod. It made the landing feel so much easier. The space pod shook less while entering the planet's atmosphere. Even a whiny brat like half-breed wouldn't get scared during a landing like this one. He would ask Gohan what he thought once they all landed on the planet.
Vegeta looked up when he realized that Gohan wasn't with them at the moment. Everything came back to him as he figured that they were only here testing out these new space pods because Gohan got away from them. It was strange how easily he got used to the brat's presence.
Vegeta crawled out of the space pod and looked around. This planet seemed nice. He wondered why it wasn't purged yet. It could make quite a profit. Raditz and Nappa approached him and Vegeta turned to them. The Saiyan prince pressed on a button on his scouter.
"He's not on the planet." Vegeta stated after getting a negative response from his scouter. The man growled as he looked around. "He must have been here. Let's fly around for a bit so that we can find out if a space pod landed somewhere around here."
They agreed to split up and search the planet for signs of landings. Raditz was the first to announce that he found a handful of soldiers who arrived on a space ship. The man landed on a grass field near the large ship and he headed for the group of soldiers standing outside.
"Well well. It's a saiyan." One of the soldiers said. Raditz noticed they were all from the same race as they looked a lot alike. Their skin was light green and their ears were large and pointy. Aside from that they all had only four fingers.
"I'm looking for a child Saiyan. He looks quite a lot like me but only smaller." Raditz allowed his hand to hover somewhere near his hips. "About this high."
The same soldier shook his head. "Sorry. We haven't seen anybody here. We did see a space pod leaving. It left right after we landed, maybe an hour or so later but that was days ago. Can't tell you who was in it though."
"Thanks." Raditz stated before saying goodbye to them. The man turned away and lifted off, planning on telling Vegeta and Nappa what he just heard. However, Vegeta interrupted him.
"It was half-breed." Vegeta stated through the scouter. He was standing in a clearing where the outline of a space pod was pressed into the ground. "I can smell his scent. He was here. How long ago did that soldier say the space pod left?"
"A couple of days." Raditz responded.
"He can't be far then. Let's go straight away." Vegeta said before flying up into the air. The man raced back to the area where they left their space pods. There he waited impatiently for the others to arrive before they all sat down in their space pods. Vegeta set the coordinates for the next planet. "The closest unpurged planet is two months away from here. I am assuming the boy is headed for that planet. He doesn't like being in the Space pod too long."
The other two Saiyans agreed and they left the planet immediately. Vegeta leaned back on his seat as he looked at the map on the screen. The boy couldn't be far away. He was only a couple of days ahead of them. It wouldn't be long now.

Gohan made himself a new campsite. He cut down trees and used large brown leaves to make a small hut in which he could sleep for a couple of days. After that he used some left-over wood to awaken a fire. He also took a moment to wash his clothes in a nearby stream.
This planet was even more beautiful than the previous one. The water was a light pinkish shade and the sky was always a dark blue. This made no difference to the day and night circle this planet also appeared to have.
Gohan landed when it was still dark. He expected the dark blue sky to change into a lighter blue sky but the exact opposite happened. The sky didn't change at all. It was the planet that suddenly seemed to light up. Gohan had encountered glow-in-the-dark lights and this planet worked just like it. Everything that was organic and alive suddenly gave light. The trees, the leaves, the ground and even the fish in the water lit up. When Gohan took a closer look, he noticed that the light seemed to come from the outlines of the animals and fish. The buildings in the cities seemed to have the same glow-in-the-dark effect and even the inhabitants of this planet could easily be seen by their lit up features.
Gohan spent every morning watching in awe as a new moon appeared in the sky and all living organisms slowly but surely started to light up.
The half-saiyan was now eating a delicious lunch he prepared for himself. After hunting down several large animals, Gohan prepared the meat he could eat and ate everything. Every last bit. He was absolutely starving. He'd been very careful the first few days because he wanted to make sure there were no scouters or any other type of energy tracking apparatuses on this planet. Now he was absolutely starving for some meat.
After the lunch he lied down in the grass contently. Stretching his tired body, Gohan let out a massive yawn before lying absolutely still and enjoying the feeling of resting his body. The stars lit up in the dark sky, small birds flew through the sky, radiating that strange light as they passed by. Gohan enjoyed a gentle tremor that vibrated through his body. The half-saiyan opened his eyes when he felt another tremor. Wait a second. This wasn't supposed to happen.
Gohan sat up when another tremor vibrated through his body and he realized that it was coming from the ground beneath him. The half-saiyan quickly got up and levitated in the air when the ground actually began to shake heavily. Gohan watched in terror when he noticed the cracks that appeared in the ground. What the hell was happening?
Gohan flew up higher when the water in the stream started to splash over its edges. Just then he became aware of the sounds. Screaming. Crying. Buildings breaking down. Gohan looked around in shock for a moment. Was this planet being purged? Was that going on?
Pictures of death and destruction flashed before his eyes. A man being torn apart by energy blasts. A woman holding her baby tightly as she disappeared in the flames. Children running away, crying for their parents as the beams were fired towards them. The beams never missed such an easy target.
Gohan shook his head and forced himself to think about something else. He quickly sensed around, stretching his powers as far as he could, but he could not feel any strong power levels. There were no other soldiers on this planet.
The half-saiyan realized the ground was shaking for no apparent reason. He looked to the left when he heard screams again and he decided to fly out there and see what was going on. When he reached the city he couldn't believe his eyes.
Several buildings were crumbled down. The streets were cracked up and torn. The aliens themselves were terrified, running around, trying to pull people from under driving machines and fallen walls.
Gohan looked down when he heard a woman screaming something in the language of this town. She cried and pointed upwards to a child that was standing on a balcony. The problem was that the balcony was about to break off of the building but the child was too terrified to move off it.
It happened in a split second. The balcony broke off. The woman cried out in misery as the child screamed in fear. Gohan didn't even think as he appeared right next to the child and simply plucked him out of the air. The half-saiyan flew towards the woman and put the child down in front of her. She stared at the half-saiyan with a combination of fear and awe before she pulled the child in her arms and said something to him. Gohan went to turn away but the woman's voice stopped him. She smiled at him and said a short string of sounds. Gohan figured she was probably thanking him and he nodded. The woman lifted the child up and took the small boy in her arms. After this she ran away, following the stream of people.
Gohan's attention was already taken away from the woman as he noticed a man that was trying to lift a driving vehicle off a female native. Gohan ran towards them and he grabbed the vehicle and lifted it in the air easily. The couple stared at Gohan in obvious fear as the half-saiyan placed the vehicle back on the ground. The male frowned before shaking his fist and saying something in a raised voice. After this he helped the female up and they ran away. Gohan raised an eyebrow. Did he just get yelled at for helping someone out?
The half-saiyan shook his annoyance off before turning away and flying up so he could see who else needed help. He spend the next several hours flying up and down, saving natives from buildings, lifting heavy objects off of wounded people and making sure parts of the buildings didn't crush anyone during their landings.
Even though the shaking stopped after a couple of tremors, the aftermath was so horrifying that it kept Gohan busy till the end of the day. Even after saving people from the dangers of the fallen stones and vehicles, other natives were still buried under the rubble and Gohan spent a lot of time sensing out the tiny life-forces and digging out the victims. It wasn't long before people started to notice that Gohan could pinpoint the exact location of the trapped people and they came up to him with questioning glances, asking him things in their language. At this time, Gohan's only job was to sense where the victims were, point out their location to a group of people and the natives would start to dig there. Meanwhile Gohan was already moving on to the next life-force with yet another group of volunteers following him closely.
The work was tiring and Gohan often had to power up to lift heavy objects when the natives couldn't move them so at the end of the day Gohan was exhausted. He couldn't sense anymore life-forces under the rubble but the worried glances of some people told him that there were still people missing. He was sad that he couldn't explain that when he didn't feel a life-force, the person they were still searching for was probably dead.
Gohan sat down on some rubble and rested his head in his hands. He hadn't had any food or water the entire day and all this precise energy-use had given him a fierce headache. He needed some food, water and some sleep or he would break down soon. However, he wasn't sure how to tell anyone this.
A female alien walked towards him and smiled at him. She said something in her tongue but Gohan could only give her a confused glance. Her brown glow-in-the-dark eyes studied him sadly before she made a motion as if she was eating something. Gohan nodded to show that he understood and she beckoned him to follow her. Gohan did as she beckoned and she led him to a large gathering. A small amount of people was handing out bits and pieces of a large selection of food. Apparently, while the digging and searching for survivors was going on they made food for everyone.
The female alien led Gohan to the line. The half-saiyan was content to stand in line and wait for his turn but everyone stepped aside and motioned for him to go first. He received smiles and claps on the back as he headed to the front of the line. There he received two plates instead of one and when he tried to return one of the plates the male who was handing out the plates shook his head and said something in his own language. Gohan smiled as he gave a brief nod before turning away with his plates in his hands. They were combinations of fruits and pieces of meat, easily prepared and quite simple but still Gohan's mouth watered at the sight. The half-saiyan was surprised when people from several tables called for him to sit with them. At least, that's what he assumed when they waved him over. The half-saiyan took place at one table and returned all the smiles he received.
After putting in several more hours of searching for the remaining bodies, a small group of inhabitants ushered Gohan to one of the large tents. There beds were standing in neat rows, many occupied. And Gohan realized they wanted him to sleep. The half-saiyan once again smiled his thanks and nodded before crawling into a bed.
As he allowed his body to rest, Gohan thought about the smiles he'd seen today. He thought about the hugs he received from the aliens and the joy everyone experienced when they saw their loved ones were still alive. Not for the first time, Gohan realized that this was the type of person he wanted to be. He never wanted to kill a soul again. No, from now on, he would travel the universe, saving everyone he could.
A smile was on Gohan's face as he finally fell asleep, feeling safe and happy for the first time in a long while.
