She couldn't sleep. For the past five hours, she'd been tossing and turning in her bed, sighing and chewing on her bottom lip, worrying about whether or not this whole confusing situation had been her fault. Should she have done something? She'd given him mixed signals, hadn't she? Had she really made it all too awkward for him to make a move?
Exhaling softly, Sakura threw an arm over her eyes, swallowing the lump in her throat as she thought about the perfection that was last night, with their nervous glances and abashed, shared smiles, soft, hushed laughter and whisper quiet conversation, as they looked at the sheet of stars above them and watched as explosions of glittery embers ornamented the dark sky.
They had gone to see the Tabanata fireworks, together, after spending some few hours in the village strolling through the streets and observing the colorful decorations. Sakura had marvelled at them all night, gushing at the colors and smiling shyly at the romantic ambiance of it all. She hadn't been able to look at Sasuke without sending her own heart pounding against her ribcage and her face flushing the deepest shade of red. But that was okay, because she could see—she wasn't the only one nervous, the only one blushing.
The night might as well have been a dream.
She never thought she could have something like this with Sasuke, never allowed herself to hope for their first actual date to be something so enchanting. He was a private guy, always so aloof and adamant on never showing his softer, more passionate side. She'd never expected for him to even do public dates at all, never expected he would take a girl that he liked to a festival—one dedicated to celebrate the meeting of two star-crossed lovers, on top of that.
But then again, Sasuke always had been full of surprises.
.
.
"Here," he murmured, handing her a thin strip of paper. She'd instantly recognized it as the Tabanata wish papers she'd seen floating around in the village's bamboo branches and wish trees.
"Are those…?"
He simply nodded, and her lips pursed, a small blush taking over her cheeks as she took it from his hand. Her eyes were drawn to his other hand when she noticed movement, and her heart jumped a little as she noticed he was nervously fiddling with his own paper. Swallowing tightly, she looked down at her own and stared for a moment, before stealing a glance to the man beside her, her gaze darting quickly from his as she noticed he was already looking at her, almost as if he was waiting for her to do something.
But she remained still, holding the blank piece of paper and staring at it like she didn't know what to do. Like she didn't know what to say.
And eventually, Sasuke couldn't stay quiet anymore.
"You're… supposed to write a wish," he muttered, shoving his hands in his pockets. "It's a tradition—"
"I know that," she interjected quickly, blushing hard. Kami, had he really thought she didn't know what it was? No, she knew perfectly what to do with it but she couldn't…
"I don't… have anything to wish for," she finally confessed, shifting a bit on her feet and tilting her head up to him almost shyly. "I've got everything I want."
The bluntness of her words seemed to shock him, but she didn't seem to realize how it all sounded before she saw his eyes widen and his cheeks flush.
Instantly, her own eyes snapped open wide, and she made a sound of embarrassment, burying her face in her hands before he could see how red she was. "Ah!" she exclaimed, turning away from him. "I'm so sorry, Sasuke-kun! That was so forward of me, I didn't meant to—"
"Sakura," he called, voice quiet and almost… amused. She looked up to see that the flush still hadn't faded from his cheeks. "It's… fine."
Biting the inside of her cheek, she nodded, before leaning forward on the metal rail, gaze darted forward towards the sky. She took in a shaky breath to try and calm herself, wondering if she was doing anything right at all, wondering if Sasuke regretted asking her out here. But then she felt him lean forward as well, his shoulders and elbows brushing against hers, and her whole body relaxed instantly, clammy palms finally unclenching.
Maybe she hadn't ruined this night after all.
.
.
Blinking tiredly, Sakura glanced at the clock beside her bed, letting out another deep, quiet sigh as she took in the time.
4:58. I should probably get up, she thought, rubbing her eyes a bit. The sun will be out soon and I doubt I'll be able to sleep, then.
Pulling herself up languidly, she drew her legs over the side of her bed and yawned, stretching her limbs long and good, until a soft little moan fell from her mouth. A little more awake, a little less clouded, Sakura blinked a few times and leaned back on her palms, admiring the soft glow in the horizon that signaled that sunrise was soon to be here.
Running a hand through her hair, she slid her feet into her cute, pink bunny slippers and noiselessly made her way across the room and to her window, taking a seat there. With both feet crossed, Sakura leaned her back against the frame and sighed, setting her gaze on the rising sun.
Even after their first real, official date, she still couldn't really seem to take in the fact Sasuke had asked her out at all. In her mind, he didn't do dating—in her mind, her relationship with Sasuke started with an impulsive kiss, or habitual dinners turned into dates after a particular touch, or expression of affection.
She'd never thought he would come up to the hospital out of the blue, hanging around her office while she worked on some papers, not really saying much of importance at all before he'd asked, without warning or any sort of transition to the subject, if she'd like to accompany him for the Tabanata festival. She hadn't thought much of it, at first, only pausing in her work to look at him curiously, before she'd nodded and continued her work, asking if he wanted her to ask Naruto and Kakashi to come along, or if he wanted to do it himself.
Sasuke had been quiet in response, prompting her to look up again, and she had been surprised by the frown on his lips, like he'd been displeased with something. She'd wanted to ask him what was wrong, wanted to know if something bad had happened or if Naruto and him were fighting again, but he'd cut her off, saying in an almost too quiet tone that he didn't want to go with the others, he just wanted her, wanted to take her out on a—
He hadn't been able to finish his sentence, but she'd understood him anyway, causing her pen to drop out of her hand while she openly gaped at him, a fierce blush creeping to her cheeks. It took a full minute of silence before she could finally nod and give him the answer he'd been so tensely waiting for. He'd left after that—with a look of content instead of the usual apathy—but not before he'd said something about picking her up after her shift tonight.
She hadn't been able to get any more work done that day, too caught up in her disbelief of the situation, too busy trying to figure out how in the world this could have happened. Too convinced that this had all been a dream.
That is, until she walked out of the hospital that day and found him waiting there, beneath a lamp post, his hands shoved in his pocket but his posture almost… nervous. He didn't have any flowers, or a corsage, or some handsome fancy suit, but he did look a little more groomed, a little more proper, and oh my god had he shaved for her? After a scrutinizing stare, she'd realized that yes, he had.
Feeling her heart melt in awe, Sakura had smiled at him, and realized that with Sasuke, it was always the little things that he did that mattered most to her.
He'd far exceeded any expectations she ever had of him, and she couldn't hope for any better. But had she lived up to his?
A chilly breeze passed by, and she shivered a bit, running a hand up her arm to rub for a little warmth. She was worried she might have ruined this good thing going on between them, with her nervous habits and inability to look into his eyes at the very end of that night, after he had walked her home. She was worried she might have given him mixed signals, might have made him think that she had not enjoyed herself, or that he had made her uncomfortable. After all, she could see it on his face then: he'd wanted to kiss her.
And she'd been so nervous when she'd realized this, so scared that she would mess this up, that she would kiss him so horribly it would have somehow changed his view about her. She'd wanted to do this right, but she'd never kissed anyone before, much less dated, and her inexperience had thrown her anxiety on overdrive.
Had she been too weird with him? Is that why he didn't kiss her?
Sakura sighed again, rubbing a little more firmly, thinking to herself that maybe she should fetch her night robe hanging by her closet lest she catch a cold from this crisp morning. Nodding to herself, she put a hand on her knee and turned her head back towards the inside of her bedroom, before freezing as she felt a very familiar chakra approaching fast, his chakra explosive and intense.
She'd only ever had the time to whip her head around again before he was there, crouched on her window still right in front of her, shirtless and completely out of breath. Her mouth had dropped a little at his sudden arrival, but she'd barely even gotten out the first syllable of his name before he slipped his hand at the back of her head and tugged her towards him, mouth dipping down to hers in a slow, sensual kiss.
Her hands fell to his chest in surprise, and she inhaled sharply, utterly taken aback, her eyes snapping wide open before they fell closed softly, as she took in the situation and realized what was happening. Her hands trailed up to his shoulders, and then the sides of his neck, as she timidly returned the kiss, moving her lips almost unsurely against his, like she was still afraid of doing something wrong.
His thumb brushed across her jaw, like a gentle reassurance, and she felt a lovely smile tug at her lips at this, before his tongue brushed against her bottom lip and sent her heart pounding away. Feeling warmth creeping over her neck, she made a little sound of surprise, pulling herself away from him while she cradled her burning cheeks.
"Damnit," she heard him curse, sounding an awful lot like he was guilty. "That was my fault, I—"
"I—It's fine," she breathed, looking up at him with a small smile. "Sasuke-kun, it's okay, I just… I've never done this before."
His eyes softened at this. "…And you think I have?"
She blushed some more, before reaching up to wrap her arms around his neck, burying her face there. "Sorry about last night," she said, her voice whisper-quiet. "For not kissing you, and giving you the wrong signs. For making it look like—"
"Sakura," he called, drawing her away from him with his hands so he could look at her properly. She almost gasped at the look in his eyes, amused and tender, shining with mirth and understanding. His hand cupped her cheek gently.
"You weren't the only one nervous last night," he finally murmured, tracing her bottom lip with his thumb.
A/N: It's funny how I think this story is so meh but I still post it anyway. I swear, it's only because I know some people will still love or it be very pleased that I keep posting the stuff I think is crap anyway hahahhahah. Ya'll are lucky I don't really care much for my writing sometimes being shitty in my eyes.
Anyway, hope you liked! :) Tried to make this in the canon universe but ugh dunno if I succeeded at all.
