Chapter 5
"Luka, have you heard any word on the twenty-six weeker that was sent up to the NICU?" Abby asked.
"Yeah, the baby is stable and doing well, but I haven't heard anything about the mother." Luka said as he signed one of the many charts in his hand and erased the patient's name from the board.
"Alright, I am going to go up to OB to check on her. I'll see you at home."
"Are you off?"
"Yeah"
"Okay, I'm not off for another two hours. I love you," Luka kissed Abby softly.
"I love you too."
Abby tapped her fingers nervously on the handrail in the elevator as she made her way up to the OB floor to talk to Dr. Coburn. As the elevator came to a stop at the OB floor and the doors opened, Abby let out a breath that she didn't know she was holding. As she stepped foot into the hallway, she spotted Janet walking down the hallway in the opposite direction.
"Abby, what are you doing here?" Janet asked, surprised.
"I came to get an update on the women we sent up who had the twenty-six weeker."
"Oh, she is stable and doing well. She hasn't been up to the NICU to see the baby yet though."
"Okay. Thank you." Abby turned on her heels to head back down to the ER when she heard Dr. Coburn's voice again.
"Was there something else?" Abby let out a long breath and slowly turned back around. Abby stared at her hands, avoiding eye contact.
"I um…I need an OB."
"Wow! Abby, congratulations!"
Abby bit her bottom lip and Janet could sense Abby didn't quite share her enthusiasm.
"Was it planned?"
"Not exactly."
"Is it something that you want?"
"I'm not sure yet."
Janet reached into her lab coat and pulled out a business card.
"Here is my card. Stop by my office anytime and I can take care of you, whether it be prenatal care or termination."
"Thank you," Abby said as she took the card.
Janet gave Abby a sympathetic smile.
"Just know that whatever decision you make, it is the right decision."
