Chapter 2: A god is not yet chosen
It was clearly mid September, when Rosemary arrived in Japan.
The weather was warm, despite the rain, and a comforting breeze drifted through the air. The warm atmosphere helped to calm her down as she took in her new surroundings, with a sense of uncertainty.
Rosemary took note of the small shop notices, and street signs all written in fluent japanese. It was animated, and beautifully drawn, so she was certain she was in the right world.
But was she in Tokyo?
No this certainly didn't look as big as that, there were too many local shops at least.
But then again; there were a lot of tall buildings, and shops with American brands.
More than you'd see in just a local town. This must have been a smaller city. But what part of Japan could she be in?
Rosemary had not considered how she would actually find Light Yagami, and without understanding the main language that surrounded her, this would be no easy feat.
For all she Knew she could actually be in China, instead of Japan, and she had no way of finding out if that was the case.
As Rosie walked around pondering this, she caught her reflection in a park fountain; momentarily stunned she stopped and gaped at the image.
She wasn't sure what she expected but Rosemary hadn't expected to looks so ordinary. She was certain her neck had broken at the least, though it had happened so fast she couldn't be sure.
Instead she had the same chubby face, with overly red cheeks, the same bright green eyes that looked a little too tired, and the same mousey brown hair that limply framed her face.
Rosie had expected a mark or two, but she remained stunningly unchanged by the accident.
Aside from being animated.
It was amazing what such a change, being drawn can do for your looks. Rosemary thought she looked cute; she'd never thought she'd looked cute.
But her size 16 frame didn't seem obese when it was animated, her old tired eyes seemed to sparkle more, and even her drably coloured hair had more shine, and radiance than before.
For having just died, she looked positively lovely.
As though to test her body, she waved her hands around, and made silly faces ,but everything seemed to be in working order.
'Although.' thought Rosemary.
Despite the nice design, her dimensions felt off.
Even though she looked two dimensional, Rosie could interact in the third dimension, and her brain was having trouble registering that.
She was certain it was something she'd get used to, but for now she felt a disconnect to everything. It was like she wasn't fully there yet.
Turning away from the fountain, Rosemary continued walking. She decided it would be better, to focus more on the situation at hand.
How was she going to communicate with people?
'I may be a fan of anime, but I'm by no means fluent in Japanese, and it's not like I have a translator with me.' Considered Rosemary, with a frown.
'Think rosemary think. Okay so you speak English, most common language in the world, so maybe if you write something down that's simple, people will get what you mean.' She rationalised.
'Okay that could work, but what's my cover for not speaking? Mute? Will people buy that? Well I literally can't talk so I guess so. Now do I have anything to write with?' she asked herself, as she walked under a shop front.
She rummaged, through the pockets of her blue velvety jacket for anything useful.
She found her brand new gloves, A pack of chewing gum, her phone, a shopping list, and the pen she had written it with.
Rosemary frowned slightly.
What could've been, had she never left her door?
But there was no point on thinking about that now. She had a note to write.
Now did she keep it formal, or casual?
Formal might have been better. if she wanted people to take her plea for help seriously, but that might come across as too standoffish.
'But a Formal note could be easier to understand.' She reasoned.
She wrote neatly, and unjoined to make her words as easy to read as possible.
"Hello my name is Rosemary.
I'm a mute from Northern Europe.
Can you direct me to a currency exchange?
I need yen to buy a notebook to communicate."
Yes That would work.
Simple words should be easy to understand, and she could mime writing on a notebook, if worst came to worst.
It wasn't as if Rosemary, had no money to spare. If she could just find a place to exchange it, she could start to get around, and find Light.
A loud crack of thunder reminded her that she needed shelter, and she quickly began walking towards a large shopping centre.
By the time she got inside, she was utterly soaked.
The gentle breeze outside, should have left her feeling freezing, but it was almost as if she wasn't affected by the cold at all.
She grabbed her hair and started wringing it out to get rid of some of the water, before tying it back; She didn't like her hair down often anyway, it got in the way too much.
She made her way up to the second floor, to get a bird's eye view of the people, in the Shopping centre. She quickly began scouring, for anyone that might know English. Rosemary guessed anyone in a business suit, or a foreigner would probably be a good bet.
Admittedly she was stereotyping here, but she couldn't reasonably ask every single person in the building, if they knew English now could she?
Soon enough, much to her delight. A young man in a soaked suit, come through the door, with an ugly scowl on his face. Rosemary grimaced at the man's bad mood, but she wouldn't get anywhere if she didn't try to approach him.
'But wait.' Rosemary paused.
How would she talk to him?
She knew that "'It" had said that she could choose to reveal herself, but how did she do that?
Was it like Clark Kent? Did she just take off her jacket, and suddenly they'd see her, as a normal alive Rosie Green?
Perhaps if She focused, really hard on being seen that's how it would work.
To test this theory, Rosemary walked into the path of a group of young school girls, and focussed all her energy, on being noticed.
She thought of being a normal, human, completely alive girl. But they just rushed right through her, without a second glance.
Her eyes went wide as her knees gave out, a sharp pain hitting her in the pit of her stomach. It felt cold and painful to be walked through like that, and she didn't like it all. Shaking her head in a slight shudder, she looked back in their direction, and noticed one of the girls had dropped a shopping bag.
Now Rosie didn't even think about it, it was just the polite thing to do. Before she'd even realised what she'd done she'd run up to one of the girls and tapped her on the shoulder to return the bag. Only then realising what she'd actually done, she was stunned when the girl turned around and thanked her for it.
Maybe to be seen by others she just had to act natural, and talk to people like she always would; after all when you think about it focussing on seeming normal, is not a normal thing to do.
Now that she'd tested this, it was the time to try her new theory on the bussiness man. Rosie was more inclined to approach him, now that he looked less grumpy, with a starbucks coffee in his hand.
However looking closely at him. the man looked familiar. Was he a main character in the story? No that couldn't be it, she'd seen this show so many times surely she'd remember him if he was, he probably just looked like a character, from another show she loved. Now all she had to do was tap him on the shoulder, and hand him the note.
'Nothing will go wrong.' Rosemary told herself, reassuringly.
So with a deep breath, Rosemary went up to him, and handed him the note.
He turned to her with a slightly annoyed expression, before he read over it for a moment. The man then paused and looked at her, as though deciding if she was trying to play him for a fool. As she waited for him to reply, Rosemary began to worry that he might not speak English after all. Her worried expression and the lack of demand, for money must have convinced him, because he soon spoke.
"I'm sorry but there isn't anything like that near here." he said in shaky accented English. "That's got to be inconvenient though." he finished in a contemplative tone, pausing as his annoyed expression melted slightly.
The man then reached inside his brief case and took out a new looking notebook, before tearing out a handful of pages he'd written on before handing it to her.
"I hope you can use this in the meantime." he said in a well-meaning tone.
Rosemary took the notebook with a small smile, but wait she still needed money. It was very generous of the man to give her the notebook, but unless she wanted to walk across all of Japan. she would need to change her pounds soon.
Rosemary quickly scribbled a new message in the notebook reading:
"Thank you very much for the notebook.
But can you please tell me where I can change my money?
I only have pounds on me and I need to get back to my friends."
Before tearing it out of the book, and passing it to him.
He began to read through it, again taking his time to work through the language, before replying much quicker now that he'd decided to trust her.
"Well" he began. "Like I said there isn't one near here. There's one up north I think but it's really too far to make it there before it gets dark."
He then began reaching inside his coat.
"I normally wouldn't do this." he told her.
"But here."
He handed her a large bunch of notes, from his wallet; more money than she had, had on her originally even. She couldn't possibly accept that much.
Her eyes widened as she frantically tried to write a note telling him to take some back, but he raised his hand in protest.
"I don't need the extra money and besides." he said with a smile.
"Sometimes you need to do something good, for someone you know?"
She happily nodded in agreement, before pocketing the money, then writing:
"Thank you Mr?"
And then handing him the note.
He looked it over, and told her his name was "Takahashi" before confirming it was no big deal, and sending her on her way.
'Takahashi?' thought Rosemary, in contemplation.
That didn't really sound familiar, She was definitely mixing him up with some similar looking guy from One Piece or something, she was sure of it now.
Regardless. Now that she had money, she'd be able to get around a lot easier.
But wait!
What if it was 2011 here too?
The manga came out around 2004, but if it was the same year, then all of the events prior would have already happened, and Rose will have arrived far too late.
She was panicking when she made her decision. She'd felt lost, and alone in a dark room, she hadn't even considered this at all.
Rose began to breath heavily, as she considered the very real possibility, that she may have wasted her time coming here.
But she quickly forced herself to think, and rationalise.
She didn't know that had happened yet.
She would just find a stationery store, and see what year the calendars were for.
If she had arrived too late well... she could cross that bridge when she got to it.
So with another deep sigh, Rosemary calmly began to look for a WHSmiths type store, to find a callender. She soon found one, and quickly browsed through the aisles before finding what she needed.
The date was 2004; the year Kira started killing.
'Well that changes things.' thought Rosemary.
If it was 2004, then L may not have even considered the case, and if that was true how would she contact him? It would be difficult as it was, but if he wasn't even in Japan, then this would be exponentially harder to do.
Rosemary bit her lip in contemplation. She'd seen the show quite a few times. but it had been a while, and she certainly didn't remember the exact dates of events, so she had no way of knowing when specifically this was in the story.
Glancing round the store she saw some maps. Well even if she didn't know when she was, she knew where she needed to get to.
Rosemary purchased an English map with tourist attractions; it didn't provide an overly detailed description but it was in English, and helped her find out she was in Chiba City, and that she wasn't too far from tokyo.
She also picked up a simple phrase book. If no one understood her writing, it could come in useful.
She headed out into the now empty streets, as the pouring rain slowly came to a trickle.
'How can find out more information?' pondered Rosemary.
The records were sure to be classified, but then again maybe she wouldn't need restricted documents.
If kira had fansites surely his fans would be keeping track of the second kira, conspiracy theories etc. It wouldn't be a perfect source of information, but it would give her a start.
Now she just had to find a computer, but where? An Internet Café perhaps? That might work, but where would she find one? there was nothing specifically like that outlined on the map. However, it did mention a shopping district about twenty minutes away, maybe she could find one there.
So tucking her map, in her jacket, she began to make her way west, through the city.
As she walked around, Rosemary pondered her situation. When she'd interacted with people and objects, no one had seemed surprised, almost as if they'd known she was there all along.
She'd known that would happen, but still with the way things were here. Maybe she could just live her life as normal, pick things back up again.
Maybe things could be like the way, they were before.
She knew they couldn't really, but it was a comforting thought to say the least. It seemed like people didn't react to her holding items either, even if she wasn't making herself known.
It was almost like, they were on the same plane, as her own.
Whatever reason behind it, it was useful. Although she could have caused some mischief, if she couldn't make them invisible.
She giggled at the thought.
Whilst Rosemary was glad to have been able talk to Takahashi easily, it would have been funny to see his reaction, to a floating shopping list.
As the wind began to pick up slightly, Rosie felt a sudden burst of energy, and thought it would be fun to run a little bit.
Rosie had never been particularly athletic, but that didn't mean she didn't love to move, and run about every once in awhile.
However once she started, she was shocked to say the least.
She couldn't feel her heart beat louder, or her legs ache at all. No, it was almost like she was swimming, through the air instead. It seemed like the streets, and people passed by in a blur; unable to catch up to her vast speed, as she ran.
Rosemary quickly slowed down however, when she realised she might pass her destination.
As she finally stopped she looked around, and realised she'd just shaved over ten minutes, off her journey time in less than a minute.
'Maybe it wouldn't be so easy, to go back to normal after all.' thought Rosemary.
When she approached the shopping district, it was 16:02 as indicated by the large analogue clock in the centre. If this was anything like the UK, they'd only be open for another hour or two, so she didn't have long to try and find an internet café before it closed.
She wandered around the streets, and saw shops selling bags, and bath bombs, and tvs, but nothing she needed. She looked at numerous coffee shops, but found none with computers.
She looked for over half an hour, before Rosie began considering looking somewhere else. However it was near the edge of the centre, that she found a 24 hour Internet cafe called 'Internet Chiba'.
Rosie soon entered the orange and cream coloured establishment, before going to the desk.
Without speaking, it was even trickier than it would have been otherwise, fumbling through her translation book and writing down basic English phrases. But soon Rose managed to rent a small pod for the night, Number 12B.
It was a simple room with a small desk and computer, two coat hooks, and a small plush mat for sleeping, or sitting down. Down the hall was a vending machine, but Rosie wasn't hungry, nor was she certain she could even eat anymore.
As she awkwardly ducked down into the low ceiling room, she decided to hang up her still damp jacket on the door, and re-tied her hair into a bun before she tried surfing the web.
She didn't know japanese, so Rosemary decided she'd have to just try, and google translate what results she did find, since this early on Kira may not have received international attention.
If it came out incomprehensible, then she might just have to ask for help, but that would certainly draw unwanted looks, which she'd like to avoid.
So, with nothing left to lose, she clicked on the Internet icon, went to google, typed in 'Kira' and found…
Nothing.
No fan pages, or conspiracy theories, no evidence of a decrease in crime, even the first victim, one of the criminal deaths she actually knew the name of, had no media coverage. In fact he was on the loose.
Rosemary sat back.
She was shook. She hadn't just arrived before L had gotten involved, she'd arrived before Light had even become Kira. She could stop him from getting the notebook.
But should she?
A/N: Review or don't i'm not too fussed :)
