On a side note I rewrote this a lot!

Chapter 9: A God may be Redeemed

'Maybe I am changing Light.' Thought Rosey, with a slight smile.

If nothing else, it seemed like he was starting to understand, where she was coming from.

"Rosa, do you mind if we end this now? I think I need some time to think." Asked Light somberly.

Rose looked uncertain for a moment. She didn't know how sincere he really was about all this.

But maybe he just needed a little time to think it over.

Rosemary nodded with a slight smile, then grabbed her things, and left Light alone with his thoughts.

On the surface Light appeared calm, slightly upset maybe.

But inside he was raging.

'How could I be so careless.' Thought Light angrily.

'I've spent my whole life involved with the justice system; I should have taken the time to sort through the criminals.'

How could he be so stupid, as to put innocent lives at risk? Especially when even someone as dimwitted as Rosa could tell where his work was heading.

Light took another sip of his coffee.

It seemed like they had nothing in common, yet she too knew about the hardships the police went through.

Of course she could have lied.

But Rose was clearly inexperienced when it came to lying. If she spoke, Light had no doubt it would be given away instantly, but even without that, her body language gave away when she was uncomfortable.

She'd hesitate before she wrote things down, and her eyes would shift slightly.

It was slight and not too obvious, but now that Light had been around her for a while he could tell, and her mom had definitely been involved with the police.

And yet their views on Justice seemed so opposing.

'It's interesting.' Thought Light. 'How she can get me to doubt myself like this.'

Light was a genius. He hadn't doubted himself since he was a child, and yet somehow…

She was able to get through to him.

'Maybe she is some kind of Guide.' Reasoned Light.

After All there was no reason he should consider the views of such a juvenile person. But he already felt his desire for the Death Note waning.

Light had already gotten rid of the world's worst criminals. If he just stopped killing now, it'd be forgotten about, and Light could move on with his Life.

'But why am I considering this?' He wondered.

Light was furious with himself for missing such an oversight, but he could easily rectify it, by targeting only larger criminals, or doing more research.

Why would he ever get rid of the notebook altogether?

'I'm your friend Light.' He remembered.

He knew she just wanted him to get rid of the Death Note, and yet she'd looked so sincere as she wrote it.

'Is her friendship important to me somehow?' Considered Light.

'No, that's ridiculous.' He reasoned. 'I've just reminded myself how much of a risk this really is, that's all.'

He had stopped killing anyway, to try and persuade Rosa of his good intentions, but maybe it would be good to stop for a while.

If he did continue with it, he couldn't carry on with his thoughts out of order like this, it was dangerous.

And he could get caught.

"Excuse me sir, we're going to close up soon." Said a smiling waitress.

Light smiled back.

"Right, sorry I was lost in my own thoughts."

Light reached towards his pockets.

"Let me just pay for these two drinks then."

"Hey Ryuk, What are you doing back here?" Asked Gook.

"Heh, the humans were having a moment." He said, chuckling.

"Besides I wanted to check something."

"Oh yeah, what?" Asked Deridovely, rolling his dice.

"There's no way to get rid of a spirit without it fulfilling it's purpose right?"

"How would we know? It's not like you can get life force from them." Said Gook, rolling his own.

"Gah! Seven!" He spat out.

"Heh heh, I win again." Said Deridovely, gathering his winnings.

"You're cheating." Complained Gook.

"I am not, you're just a sore loser." Claimed Deridovely.

"You are too cheating!"

Ryuk shook his head, it was this kind of banter that had made him leave.

"Yeah I didn't think you'd know anything." Said Ryuk, as he was about to take off.

"Now hang on I might know something." Said Deridovely, counting his reward.

"Oh?" Asked Ryuk smirking.

"Yeah, it was a couple hundred years ago." Deridovely paused.

"I can't remember what he did, but I think a human tricked one somehow."

"Tricked them?" Asked Ryuk.

"That's the stupidest thing i've ever heard." Said Gook

"Not only are you a cheat, but you're a bad liar too."

"Well, what would you know?" Asked Deridovely, in a droll tone of voice.

"I know that you're liar!" Replied Gook.

"Do you know how he tricked them?" Asked Ryuk.

"Nah, I think there was some kind of Light, but I wasn't really paying attention." Admitted, Deridovely.

Ryuk nodded.

That was more than he'd expected honestly.

"Why do you care anyway?" Asked Gook.

"Heh, just wondering I guess." Said Ryuk with a grin.

Gook shook his head.

'So Light may be able, to get rid of her after all.' Thought Ryuk.

He flew off.

'That could make things even more interesting.'

Rosey was lying on a park bench near Light's house.

It was getting dark now, and it was a bit chilly, but that didn't bother Rosemary much.

"I used to be so sensible, it makes the truth even more incomprehensible." Sang Rosie quietly, to herself.

Talking about her mum, had made her realise just how much she really missed her.

Her family was completely the opposite of Light's.

His firmly believed in the law, and justice.

Rosemary's family, well...

She hadn't lied about her mum being in the police, or the injury.

But she had omitted that her mum personally thought the police were all just a bunch of "Fat fuckers who should really mind their own bloody business".

Her mum had basically, just done the job for the money.

But she was a lovely person. Mrs Green was great with little children, and telling stories, and she'd always known what to tell Rose to get her through things.

"What should I do now mum?" Asked Rosie, in vain.

She felt like she'd made some progress with Light but he was so manipulative. How did she know he was being sincere?

Rosemary's eyes began to water, as the fact that she would never hear, her mother's advice again, really started to hit her.

She'd never see any of them again.

She'd never sing ABBA with her mum, she'd never watch Top Gear with her dad, or play videogames with her brother.

She really was alone.

Rose wiped her eyes.

She made her choice, and she wasn't going to regret it. At least here she could have some kind of impact.

At least here she felt alive.

Light went home, and instinctively reached for his drawer, before stopping himself.

'No, not now, at least.' He reminded himself.

Instead Light went for his usual text books.

Since he met Rosa in person, he'd fallen back on his studies.

It would look suspicious, if he didn't keep it up so tonight, he'd get back into routine.

Besides it would be good to do something familiar.

Rosemary soon found herself, heading back to Light's home.

It was dark now, and she didn't really have the money for a hotel anymore.

'I guess it's a good thing Light offered me room.' Thought Rosey, absentmindedly.

He'd obviously just been trying to be nice as a front, but still it was appreciated.

When Rosie went up the stairs to Light's room, she found him studying.

'Well I guess he's better boring, than he is a killer.' Decided Rose.

She lay down on his bed with a creak.

"Rosa?" Light asked, questioningly.

Rosemary tapped his leg, with her foot.

"Oh you're back!" Said Light, turning away from his work for a moment.

Rosey sat up, and got out her notebook.

'Are you going to give up the notebook?' She wrote.

Light was silent.

"Rosa i've been careless. Inexcusably so."

'that's putting it mildly.' Thought Rose.

"I wanted to make the world a better place but I should never have put innocent lives at risk."

'Though if it came down to it, I may have had to sacrifice a few.' Thought Light.

"I can't undo the damage i've done. But i'm going to try." He admitted.

He placed his right hand on his chest.

"Rosa, I am going to stop using the deathnote."

Wait what?

'You're really going to give it up?' She asked.

"I'm not going to write in it anymore." Confirmed Light.

Rose smiled.

'But I'm not going to give up the notebook.' he thought, 'I've put too much effort into this to consider that yet.'

"To be honest since i've stopped writing in it, i've felt less like carrying on. But with this, i'm starting to doubt if I can really keep it up." Admitted Light.

He smiled back at Rosey.

"So perhaps it's best for me to stop."

Rose grasped her face, as she tried to fight back the tears.

She was so happy.

She may have actually done it, she may have just saved Light's life.

"Rosa? Are you okay?" Light asked, concerned at her tears.

Rosemary nodded and wiped them away, still smiling.

'I'm just happy for you.' She wrote.

Light knew she cared for him on some level, but now he was certain she'd be unlikely to turn him into the police.

"Well that's great." Said Light, laughing slightly.

"By the way Rosa, you said you'd tell me how you knew that café."

Rose stilled for a moment.

"Do you think now would be a good time?" He asked kindly.

'I don't have to give him all the details.' Considered Rosie.

She nodded, before writing in her notebook.

'I know what happens if you keep using the Death Note.'

she paused.

'It may sound a little far fetched but, I've seen a future without me, and it doesn't end well for you.'

"What happens to me?" Asked Light.

'You die.'

Light flinched slightly.

'Not just you though. Anyone who interferes with the case, even your own family would be destroyed.'

Rose sighed.

'I came to try and stop that.' She finished.

Light was contemplative for a moment.

'So I was right. She is some kind of spiritual guide.'

If she really did know about the future, then he could use her to avoid making mistakes.

'But continuing could be risky.' He countered.

He had been confident in his ability to evade the police, but if she was right then not only he, but his entire family could end up dead.

"You're right that is a little farfetched." Said Light, chuckling slightly.

"Do you think you could prove it to me somehow?"

Rosemary had expected something like this.

The problem was, because she caught him so early, there wasn't much she could tell him to prove it.

'I can't tell him about L or Misa, that's far too late, and if he's really giving up the Deathnote it won't affect him anyhow.' Thought Rose.

She couldn't talk about the rigged drawer, because he'd already built that. Nor could she talk about Ryuk coming.

Wait! the times! Light had written all his names before he met her, so she couldn't have seen them.

So how would she have known that he only wrote them when he wasn't at school?

'You've only written names when you weren't at school.' wrote Rosey. 'You always wrote them according to your schedule.'

Light stared for a second, looking for any signs that she might have just guessed that.

He found none.

'She didn't contact me until, after I had already eliminated hundreds.' Concluded Light 'and I didn't write down specific times in the notebook '.

There's no other way she could have known that.

'But if someone of her mental ability knew I was killing according to a schedule.' Realised Light.

Then what was to stop someone else from finding his real identity?

"Well I guess i've got no choice but to believe you." Said Light with a warm smile.

Rosie returned it.

'It kind of feels good to let him know.' She thought.

'This information could be important.' Concluded Light.

She'd still been vague, and hadn't revealed anything in his immediate future; but she had alerted him to yet another oversight of his.

'You're slipping Light, I can't afford to be sloppy with something like this.' He thought.

Light's thought's were interrupted by his mother calling him.

"Light your father's coming home soon, would you mind setting the table for dinner." Asked his mom.

"Er sure mom." Light replied.

He then turned to Rosemary.

"I Know I asked this before, but would you like to join my family for dinner." Light asked kindly.

Rosey considered it for a second.

'You know, having a dinner with actual people sounds kind of nice.' Thought Rose.

'I'd love to join you.' She replied with a smile.

Light chuckled.

"Great! I'll let my mom know you're joining us." He said enthusiastically, before going down stairs.

'Well he seems happy.' Thought Rosie, as she started doodling in her book.

Meanwhile downstairs Light was setting out the plates.

"Thank you so much for lending a hand Light. I know how hard you must be working." Praised his mom.

"It's no trouble mom, it's just a small task after all." Said Light with a smile.

"By the way, I hope you don't mind but I invited a friend to dinner."

"Why of course there's no problem Light." Said his mother .

"To be honest I always make too much food anyway, and you know we're always happy to meet your friends." She finished smiling.

"So who is it? Ren? Yusuke?"

"Actually she's new." Said Light, putting down the last of the cutlery. "She's an exchange student from England."

"Oh a Girl! and from England? How interesting." Replied Mrs Yagami smiling.

"Yeah, she's pretty entertaining." Said Light.

'When she's not being idiotic.' He thought.

"But I should probably tell you she's mute."

"Oh dear! That poor girl." Exclaimed his mom.

"She communicates by writing down, but her japanese is pretty poor." Explained Light.

"I see, how ever does she get by?" Asked his mother.

"Well she's staying with a family that are good with English." Light lied smoothly.

"They also have someone helping her out when she's with us at school."

"Well i'm certainly impressed that you've managed to be friends with her despite that." Said his mother as she stirred a pan of sauce.

"Language can be so difficult to get around."

Light chuckled.

"Well, she made it hard for me to ignore her."

"What Light has a new girlfriend?!" Exclaimed Sayu, coming downstairs.

"Mmm, smells good Mom."

"Shut up Sayu." Said Light swatting her good naturedly.

"Rosemary's just a friend."

"Oh so her names Rosemary! Is she your precious Rose?" Teased Sayu.

"Now Sayu leave your brother alone, and be polite to our guest when she gets here." Said Mrs Yagami firmly.

"Alright, I was just joking." Said Sayu, as she lounged in front of the TV.

Light shook his head.

"I'll text Rosa to let her know what time to come then."

"Oooh Rosa! Is that your special nickname for her?" Asked Sayu.

"What? I can't give my friends nicknames?" Light asked innocently.

Sayu giggled.

"Geez Light, for someone smart you don't know much about girls."

Light laughed.

"I guess not." He replied, before heading upstairs.

He entered his room, and paused for a second.

"Rosa?" He asked looking around.

Rosie coughed.

"Oh good you're still here." Said Light, facing her.

'I can never tell if she's here. If I did take up the Death Note again, she could see my every move without me knowing.' Thought Light, annoyed at the situation.

"I told my mom that you're an exchange student at my school. We can say that you're staying, at Komari Teshima's house." He explained.

"Our parents aren't in contact in anyway, so there's no reason for them to check that."

Rose nodded.

'Makes sense.' She thought.

"We have to account for travel time. You were probably already on your way as I invited you." Considered Light.

"Do you think you could knock on the door in about twenty minutes?" Asked Light.

Rose nodded, again.

Light smiled.

"Perfect."

'If nothing else this will make it seem more like I trust her.' Thought Light.

"We've got a bit of time before dinner was there anything you wanted to do?" Asked Light.

Rosemary shrugged.

'Any Ideas?' She wrote.

"Well I have to say Rosa I kind of admire you as an artist." Said Light.

Rose blushed slightly.

'This is too easy.' Thought Light.

"You have an unusual style, and I was wondering if you could maybe draw me?" He asked nervously.

'Unusual style? I was just drawing from life.' Thought Rosemary.

She smiled, and nodded.

'Portrait?' She asked.

"If that's not too difficult." Light added with a hint of arrogance.

Rosemary rose an eyebrow.

'Too difficult? You're a bloody anime character.' She thought.

'Sure, i'll give it a go.' She wrote.

Light sat cross legged on his bed, whilst Rosie sat across from him.

She didn't really like drawing anime style anymore, but she could still easily go back to it.

So she quickly did, a biro sketch, of Light Yagami.

She couldn't add the finer shading, she normally did with a pencil, but it was still decent.

Rose signed her name, and handed it to Light Yagami.

He looked gobsmacked.

'It's just an anime picture.' Thought Rosey.

'I had no idea she could draw so realistically.' Thought Light.

"Wow Rosa this is really impressive, it's so different from your more en avant garde style." He said genuinely.

'Are you fucking kidding me?' Thought Rosie.

Did this mean her detailed Life drawings were considered shit, compared to her anime fan art.

'Right, that's it I wasted my time in art school.' Decided Rosemary.

"It's going to be dinner soon." Said Light looking at his watch.

'Ah 2004! back when people still used to use watches.' Thought Rose, sarcastically.

"You should probably arrive soon." He finished.

Rose nodded and grabbed her book, to head downstairs.

She phased through the door, then turned to knock on it.

"Ah! That must be Light's girlfriend!" Said Sayu, who was closest to the door.

"She's not my girlfriend Sayu!" Light yelled, muffled from upstairs.

Sayu opened the door.

"Hi nice to meet you! I'm Sayu, you already know my brother Light." She said enthusiastically.

Rose stared back.

'All I got was Sayu.' Thought Rosemary.

"Erm are you okay?" Asked Sayu, confused.

"She's from England and doesn't speak much Japanese Sayu." Explained Light, as he came down the stairs.

"Hey Rosa, this is my sister Sayu!" Introduced Light.

Rose smiled and bowed slightly.

"Er Light why doesn't she say anything? No offense but it's a little weird." Asked Sayu.

"Oh right you didn't know." Said Light, inviting Rosie in to take off her shoes. "Rosa's actually a mute."

Sayu gasped.

"Oh my god I am so sorry, you must think i'm such a jerk." Apologised Sayu quickly.

Rosey chuckled, Sayu was acting really weird.

"She thinks it's fine Sayu." Said Light, chuckling with her.

"Well that's good. Hey Light can you play translator? I want to tell her I love her clothes! They're so colourful! But i'm not as good at english as you." Admitted Sayu.

"She likes your clothes and thinks they're very colourful." Translated Light.

'They're a bit gaudy to be honest.' Thought Light, though there was a part of him, that was getting used to her style.

Rosemary wrote down.

'Thank you. I love your hair.'

Light translated, again.

"Aw really! Thanks, i'm trying to grow it out long, but i'm not sure." Rambled Sayu, with Rosey politely nodding.

'If I have to translate for Sayu, this might be a long night' Thought Light, in dismay.

"What's this? Do we have an guest tonight?" Asked Mr Yagami, as he entered the house.

"Yeah dad! This is Light's friend Rosemary, but she's from England, and she's mute, but she's got these cool clothes. " Explained Sayu.

"I see, well it's very nice to meet you Rosemary." Said Mr Yagami, holding out his hand.

Rose shook it, and gave back a nervous smile.

'This whole thing is weird.' Thought Rosie.

"Oh hello Rosemary we're very glad to have you over." said Light's mom.

Rosey nodded.

"She said we're glad to have you over." Translated Light.

Oh right, that made sense.

"Well dinner's just about ready. I'll serve it up." Said Mrs Yagami.

"I'll join you all in a second, just let me get out of my coat." Replied Light's dad.

They all moved into the dining room, and sat around the table.

'This feels like an american sitcom family.' Thought Rose 'Except you know, the perfect son is kind of an evil twat'.

"Alright I hope everyone enjoys this." Said Mrs Yagami, as she started serving out portions.

"There's plenty left over." She finished.

"Looks great." said Light with a smile.

Dinner was a kind of pork curry, with rice.

It looked good.

"Shall we eat then?" Asked Mr Yagami, as he took his seat.

"Yes, let's eat." Agreed Light's mom.

They all tucked in.

Rosemary cautiously took a bite.

'Weird, it tastes kind of sweet. There's almost no spice.' She thought.

Rosey wasn't particularly fond of spice but still.

It was kind of weird.

"Do you like the food Rosemary?" Asked Mrs Yagami.

Light translated.

'Yes, it's very different from english food.' Rose wrote.

Light relayed the message.

"Well that's good, I thought I may have let it simmer a little too long you know." She said, chuckling slightly.

Rosie smiled.

Light's family was very kind. They asked about England, and her family, and interests.

Sayu cautiously asked how she became a mute.

To which Rosemary answered 'A car crash'.

Whilst Light's parents, asked more about her schooling.

"You're an artist! How interesting, I don't think Light's ever had a friend involved in the arts." Exclaimed Mrs Yagami.

"It's not that weird mom." Chuckled Light "I have friends that do lots of stuff."

He turned to Rose.

"Hey Rosa do you mind if I show them that portrait." Asked Light kindly.

Rosemary shook her head.

It was his picture, what did she care?

"Oh wow that's very impressive." Said Mrs Yagami.

"Have you considered an professional career?" Asked Mr Yagami.

"That is so cool! Could you draw me?" Asked Sayu.

Rosemary ended up drawing a quick portrait, for each of the family members.

Conversation continued throughout the evening, with Light translating for her, and his family.

Towards the end of it, Rosie could have sworn she saw Light twitching, out of annoyance.

"Well it's getting Late, would you like me to give you a lift home Rosemary?" Asked Mr Yagami.

Light's eyes widened.

"You don't have to do that dad. I invited her after all, I can walk her back to her house." Offered Light.

"Well if you're sure, but be careful out there." Mr Yagami gave Light a knowing look. "You never know what could happen".

Light nodded.

"Hey Rosa, i'll walk you to your place if that's alright." Said Light.

Rose smiled.

"Tell your friend she's welcome back anytime Light." Said Mrs Yagami.

"Yeah, bring her around some time! I can show her all the cool stuff in Japan." Said Sayu.

"Like Hideki Ryuga?" Asked Light, teasingly.

"Er yeah." Said Sayu "Hey maybe she can tell me about some cute british boys."

Light shook his head, and grabbed his coat.

"I'll be back in a bit." He said, as he walked out the door with Rosie.

"I like her, she's less boring than Light's other girlfriends." Declared Sayu, after the door slammed.

"Sayu, that's not nice to say. Who Light decidedes to date is none of your business." Scolded Mrs yagami.

Sayu rolled her eyes, and went up to her room.

"How's work been lately?" Mrs Yagami asked her husband.

Mr Yagami frowned.

"Troubling." He admitted.

"Oh is it about those heart attacks?" Asked mrs Yagami.

"Have they gotten worse?" She pressed, as she picked up the plates.

"That's just it. It's almost like they've stopped." Said Mr Yagami.

"Stopped? Well isn't that good." Asked Light's mom.

"It's concerning. It might mean that an even bigger attack is coming." Said Light's dad.

"Or at the very least, it could mean we'll never catch the culprit."

Mrs Yagami put her hand on her husband's shoulder and smiled.

"Don't worry, I'm sure thing will work out." She said.

Mr Yagami smiled back.

"We can only hope."

Meanwhile Light and Rose were heading down the local high street.

"I hope my family didn't overwhelm you. They really seemed to like you." Said Light chuckling.

Rosemary shook her head.

Light's family had been fine.

And it had been nice to eat some actual food, instead of nibbling on chocolate and crisps.

It almost made up for the fact she was so far away from her own family.

Light frowned slightly.

Rosa looked sad.

"Rosa, are you okay?" Asked light with a hint of genuine concern.

Rosemary nodded.

'I'm fine. It's just sitting with your family kind of reminded me of my own and stuff.' she scrawled down as they walked.

They went on in silence for a moment.

Light wrapped his right arm, around her.

Rose's eyes went wide in shock.

"Rosa." He began "You said you'd help me because you were 'my friend'. But friends help each other, so don't think you can't ask me for help too."

'In a way, I guess she's not that annoying at all.' thought Light.

In a way she was just a poor girl, who got killed.

Rosey smiled slightly as her eyes leaked a little.

She hugged Light in thanks.

Light awkwardly froze in place, before slowly returning the hug.

Rose looked up to Light and mouthed 'Thank you'.

He smiled back.

'No in a way she's not that bad at all.' He decided.

"There's still a place at my house for you if you're interested." Offered Light.

'Maybe he is getting better.' Thought Rosemary optimistically.

She nodded with a smile.

Light offered his hand, and they both walked home, hand in hand.
