Chapter 11: The Spirit Rises
Mr Yagami rubbed his temples and sighed.
It had only been a few days since the infamous television incident, and they were already way out of their depth.
So much information had come in about kira, and they needed to chase every lead which came their way.
The entire force was exhausted
"What information do we have so far then?" Asked Soichiro.
"Well sir we've had over three thousand responses so far. Most of these were from teenagers, and concerned parents, however fourteen claimed to either be Kira or know Kira." Said one officer.
"I see, and did you find anything?" Enquired Mr Yagami.
"We followed them all up, but nothing came up sir." Explained the officer.
"All right then, what about the victims?" Questioned Soichiro.
"We've confirmed that all their names were publicly available." Said Aizawa.
"And per L's request we Investigated the times of the deaths sir." Said Ukita. "Before the two week stop Kira's killings all occurred between the hours of 4 p.m. and 2 a.m. on week days, local time, with sixty-eight percent of them occurring between 8 p.m. and 12 a.m."
Mr Yagami rose an eyebrow.
"Before the stop? Do you mean to say this has changed?" Asked the Chief.
"That's right." Said a second officer. "His killings lately have been much more varied in their times."
"This is extremely useful information to us." Commented L, from his laptop.
"Based on the previous times of death, it's very likely that Kira could in fact be a student. Now of course at this point this is just a suggestion, however I would like for you to continue investigating based on this assumption."
The task force looked at one another.
Soichiro nodded.
"As you wish L, should we look out for anything else?"
"I think it's safe to assume we are dealing with someone that is driven by a very idealistic notion of justice. It's highly possible he may even aspire to be some sort of godlike figure." Explained L.
"We're dealing with an individual who has a very childish concept of right and wrong, None the less at this point it would be wiser to look at all possible suspects; that will be the quickest route to catching Kira."
"But our findings show that Kira no longer kills during those hours." Argued the first officer.
"Yes." Said L.
He had already begun to consider this.
"I believe Kira may have been compromised." Stated L.
"Compromised?" Confirmed Soichiro.
"Yes." Said L. "Up until Kira's break from killing, all the evidence pointed to him being an intelligent, arrogant young man. I'd even go so far to say he was fearless. However since then, his patterns have changed."
"So?" Asked the second officer. "Isn't it possible he only just thought of the pattern being noticeable? We only just considered the possibility ourselves."
"I'd like to disagree." Argued L. "I'd say it's more likely he deliberately left clues for us to find, in the belief that we wouldn't be able to find him with such little information."
Soichiro nodded in agreement.
Such little information, was difficult to work with.
"Then why do you think he's suddenly changed his patterns?" Asked Mr Yagami.
"I believe it may be linked to Kira's hiatus." Explained L. "It's highly likely that during that time, Kira was in someway threatened."
The police gasped.
"You mean to say there's someone out there who's immune to Kira's power?" Asked Mogi.
"At this point it's impossible to say how Kira was inconvenienced, but yes that is a possibility to consider. Regardless I'd like you to also look into the possibility of an accomplice; be sure not to dismiss any unusual information, it may prove to be useful." Said L.
Everyone nodded.
"Thank you for your cooperation everyone. I feel we're one step closer to finding Kira. Before I go, I'm afraid I have one additional request to make. This is directed to the teams investigating the victims; I would like you to go back and take a closer look at the exact way in which the victims' identities were made public. Be as thorough as possible. In particular, I want to know if photos of the victims were made available to the public in Japan. I'll leave it to you." Finished L, before the laptop turned off.
…
"Well looks like they think you're losing it Light He He He." Commented Ryuk with a grin.
Light twitched, then smirked.
"Well it's certainly interesting that they've already started suspecting a student."
'But I didn't realise how much Rosa was affecting me.'Thought Light.
He'd subconsciously tried to change his killing times, without even realising it.
Light had almost forgotten that it was because of her that he'd even thought of it.
He still missed her.
It didn't seem like they were obviously compatible as friends at all.
'She wore such gaudy clothes.' Remembered Light.
But her sense of right and wrong, it had been…
Refreshing.
Her "efforts" had annoyed him definitely, but he couldn't really fault her for doing what his own father was attempting.
Besides after a while he'd grown to really love their conversations.
He'd even tried to teach her some basic kanji, though she didn't really get it.
Light smiled a little.
It had been enjoyable.
Well had, was the key word.
His smile fell a little.
She was gone now, and he had to clear his head.
"Hey Light." Said Ryuk "Aren't you worried about getting caught?"
Light smirked again.
"If the cause of death is written within forty seconds of writing the person's name, it will happen. If the cause of death is not specified, the person will simply die of a heart attack. After writing the cause of death, details of the death should be written in the next six minutes and forty seconds." Quoted Light.
He turned to Ryuk. "That sound right to you, Ryuk?"
"Huh? What's your point?"
"Well,if I write heart attacks as the cause of death, then I should be able to write down all the details including time of death afterward, shouldn't I?" Finished Light, as he twirled a pen in his right left hand.
"Looks like I will be able to provide you with more entertainment now."
…
"Rosemary wake up."
"It?" Asked Rosemary drowsily.
"Is that what you've been calling me?" Enquired It with an amused tone.
Rose was still blinking her eyes open.
'But if It's here then I..' she mentally pondered.
Rose shot up, and turned to the familiar orange light.
"Where am I?" Asked Rose desperately.
"Back." Replied the voice.
Rosey began breathing heavily.
She was back?
But she'd fulfilled her purpose.
"I don't understand!" Yelled Rosemary. "I did what you told me to, I fulfilled my purpose!"
The voice was silent.
"Are you sure?" It asked after a moment.
Rosey froze.
What did it mean?
What had gone wrong?
"What are you talking about?" She asked seriously.
"You've been tricked." Stated the voice.
"Tricked? I've been tricked? I can be tricked? That's possible? Why is that possible? Shouldn't there be a lock preventing that or something?" Babled Rosemary in confusion.
"When a purpose is fulfilled, a spirit is instantly taken to their final destination." Explained the voice.
"However." It began. "It is possible for you to return to this plane, if you no longer wish to remain among the living."
Rose stared.
"But I saw other ghosts!" Argued Rosemary. "They didn't just disappear, they were still around!"
"Why would they come back?" It asked cheerily.
"They don't have the mental ability, to want anything anymore; in their state well, they're more or less stuck on earth for eternity."
Rosemary gulped.
"But you said that the only options were reincarnation or lingering." She murmured.
"Of course." Replied the voice. "But if you reject one option, it's typically assumed that you've chosen the other."
Rose paled.
Was she going to be reincarnated?
"Am I going to be…?" She trailed off, unable to fully say it.
"Oh you misunderstand." Said the Voice.
"It's not a matter of me making you do it; typically you would have gone straight to the next life."
The light floated around her.
"The fact that you popped back here is unusual." stated It. "It seems you are full of surprises, Rosemary."
Rose's eyes widened.
She was almost reincarnated.
Not stuck in heaven, or hell.
Gone.
Rosemary felt faint.
"Now, Now, this isn't the time to feel ill." Said the voice chipperly, as Rosey steadied her legs.
"You still have a job to do."
Rose needed to think.
"But what if this happens again? What if I almost kill myself because I think i'm done?" Panicked Rosemary.
"Then don't think you're done." Said the voice plainly.
"Look I don't think you understand, how am I supposed to know for sure when i'm done I mean -."
"Don't think it's over, even if your body turns to dust before your eyes, and everyone around you becomes mist." interrupted It.
It's voice seemed more masculine now.
"Only you decide when it's over Rosemary."
Rose's mind was blank.
'Don't ever think i've done my job? but how will I ever move on?' Wondered Rosie, confused.
"How will I even…?" She mumbled out loud.
"You don't have to." Said the voice, in it's more childlike voice.
"I know when you've done your job, that's how I knew you weren't supposed to be here after all. But it's up to you to keep on living Rosemary, I can't make you want to be alive, that's up to you."
Rose's eyes widened in realisation.
Be alive?
She had to want to live. The moment she gave up on breathing air, having friends, using her mind to create beautiful drawings, and stories, she was dead.
What was she doing?
She'd felt so content with life that she was willing to die in a second, she was willing to give up everything she was.
It was almost like she'd overdosed herself, on antidepressants.
This was scary, terrifying, so scary that she could feel blood pumping through her heart like fucking fire.
Her Heart.
Rose put her hand on her chest.
It was beating, it was warm, she was alive. It didn't matter how or why, all Rosie knew was the moment she surrendered it was game over for her.
She had to do something.
How could she not do something? This was stupid to have a lapse like this. She had an mission, an adventure.
And she wasn't letting Light take her last hurrah early.
"You're right." She murmured. "You are so right I can't let this I.."
She paused.
"I don't need to be a hero, but I need to try. I need to be brave, and run, and fight, and fucking do something." Said Rose loudly.
if it could have smiled, I'm sure it would have.
"Then go." Said the voices.
Rose smiled wider than she had in awhile.
"Oh you bet I will." She said, as she slipped through the darkness once more.
…
"I don't believe this! Another 23 victims yesterday too!" Exclaimed Mr Yagami, looking over the reports.
For the past few days now, Kira's killings had become less erratic and formed a perfect 24 hour schedule.
"I guess that rules out the possibility of him being a student." Said a third officer.
"Not necessarily, I mean any kid can skip a couple days of school." Pointed out the first.
"You're missing the point." Said L.
"It does appear less likely now that Kira is a student, but that's not the message he's sending by doing this."
The police looked around confused.
"Ask yourselves, why every hour? And why are all these victims in prisons where they should be discovered immediately? Why not other criminals like before? I believe Kira is telling us that not only can he kill from a distance, but he can also determine the time of death." Concluded L.
"But something's not right." He paused.
'Kira made a response almost immediately, after we suspected he might be an student.' Surmised L.
"As soon as we began to suspect that Kira might be a student, the pacing of the killings changed. As if to contradict that theory. Coincidence? No. Too convenient. This can only mean that Kira has access to police information. It's obvious now. This is a direct challenge to me."
'This also confirms that whoever was preventing Kira before is no longer around.' Thought L.
"So Kira has found a way to obtain information from the Task Force headquarters. This is one fact that cannot be ignored. But what does he get out of all this? What is he hoping to achieve in the end?" Asked L, slightly frustrated.
He disliked not knowing.
…
"Explain to me how letting L know you have connections to the police was a good thing?" Asked Ryuk, eating one of Light's apples.
"Seems like you've just made it easier for them to find you."
"Not at all Ryuk." Said Light, leaning back in his chair.
"I've made it easier to catch L." he finished, smirking.
"Oh?" Asked Ryuk.
"When L discovers that I'm somehow getting confidential information, he'll be obligated to start investigating the police to find the source of the leak. When that happens, it'll only be a matter of time before the police start resenting L. On the surface, it will appear that L and the investigation team are working together to try to catch me. But in reality, L will investigate the police and they will be investigating L." Explained Light.
"Once they find him, I just have to step in and." Light ate a potato chip.
"Eliminate him".
…
'Who are you Kira?' Pondered L, as he looked over his screen.
The FBI had been in Japan for four days now, and had done background checks on over one hundred police candidates in that time.
'I am certain that we'll find our suspect among this list.'
…
"Hey Light you got a second." Asked Ryuk.
"I told you not to talk to me in public." Grumbled Light, out the side of his mouth.
"Then I'll talk and you listen." Said Ryuk.
Light grunted slightly.
What part of don't talk to me in public did he not get?
"First of all I'm here cuz I have to be, I'm not on your side or L's." Said Ryuk.
Light glanced at Ryuk.
"Yeah I already knew that much." Mumbled Light.
"I just want to make it clear that I'm not telling you this because i'm your ally, it's just." Ryuk paused.
"it's kinda freaking me out now."
"Get to the point already." Said Light, impatiently.
Ryuk chuckled.
"You're being followed by another human. He's watching you right now. It's really starting to get on my nerves. I realize there's no way he can see me, but, because I'm always following behind you wherever you go, I feel like I'm constantly being watched." Admitted Ryuk.
Light's eyes widened slightly, before he composed himself.
"Well that's a problem." Said Light.
…
"Ow." Mumbled Rosemary.
It hadn't hurt the last time she'd come down, but then again she'd been a bit less full of life at the time.
Rosie wobbly got to her feet, and brushed the dirt off of her knees.
It was cooler than she remembered, no longer quite as stiflingly humid.
What was it now? December?
'Ha.' Realised Rose ironically. 'It'll almost be christmas again soon.'
She shook her head.
'No time for death now Rose, time to be a goddamn superhero!' She thought, determinedly.
Now that she felt a little more secure in herself, Rosemary found herself feeling angry at Light.
After all those weeks together, he still lied about having the Death Note.
'No, No he probably didn't want to let go of the memories.' Justified Rosie.
Anyway she could just go and ask him about it herself.
"Okay." She said out loud. "I can't have been gone too long, and even if he started killing again he can't have done that much in a few hours, I'll just have to talk it out with him."
With a sigh of relief at having rationalised everything to herself, Rosie adjusted her jacket.
"Okay, now to find out where I am." She said aloud.
Oh perfect, this time she was in Tokyo. Having had a tour of the place, Rose knew that she'd find it infinitely easier to get back to Light this time around.
As Rosey walked down the high streets she admired a lot of the city lights; it was late in the evening and the city was truly breathtaking right now.
'I thought London was pretty, but damn.' Thought Rose, Tokyo was really impressive.
Rosemary was particularly pleased with the big white clock tower they had. It was obviously temporary, but it was still very nice.
It even had the date and everything; the 19th of December 200-Wait! the NINETEENTH of December?
It was only the third, or fourth wasn't it?
Rose froze.
'Oh Shit.' She hadn't just been gone for two hours, she'd been gone for over two weeks!
"Fuck." Yelled Rosie as she sprinted towards, the nearest internet café.
What the hell had Light done in that time?
She frantically searched the Web, after selecting the English language from the menu.
'Come on, Come on, Come on, Kira search now!' Thought Rose impatiently.
Rosemary quickly scrolled through the results.
"Are you fucking kidding me Light?! Are you fucking serious with me right now?!" Yelled Rose, as she looked through the results.
'That arrogant little prick! I was trying to help him, and he just urgh!' She was, fucking livid.
Light hadn't just gone back to killing, oh no! He'd almost doubled his output, and the police were involved now, WITH L!
Was Light really so fucking stupid that he didn't realise how this MIGHT, just POSSIBLY, backfire a little?
Rosemary sighed.
"Okay, okay, one, two, three, four, five okay, I'm calm, I'm cool, I'm fine." She told herself.
Well now what? Even if she went back to Light now, it was looking more and more unlikely he'd listen to her without some kind of force.
Go to the police right? That was the next logical step.
The only problem was if Light saw her around, or rather Ryuk told him, he'd instantly change his plans, and all the information she had would be worthless.
'Even more than that though.' Thought Rose.
If she helped the police catch Kira, how would she keep him alive?
Rose huddled in her chair, with her legs clasped together.
She didn't want to get Light killed.
She'd gotten to know him, and like him, and...well they'd been friends hadn't they?
But would he be able to get out of this alive now? Even if he gave up the Deathnote?
'Think Ross, what's the next step.' She asked herself.
If Kira had gotten L involved then, he'd probably changed up his killing style.
There was nothing like that in the news, but the police were probably dealing with Light's hacking.
"They probably know he's a student which means…." Her eyes widened.
"Raye".
The FBI agents were next.
But how would she save them?
…
"I can't believe something broke the barrier again, don't they know we have to fix it." Grumbled Gook.
"Oh shut up." Mumbled Deridovely "You haven't had to do any work, in seven hundred years."
"Doesn't mean I want to start now." Muttered gook, as he began reweaving the fabric of the realms together.
…
'Who would be following me? Does this mean L is already starting to suspect the police?' Wondered Light.
"Hey Light do you know what the difference between a human, and a shinigami is?" Asked Ryuk.
"No." Said Light, forgetting his thoughts for the moment. "Why would I know that?"
Ryuk grinned. "Well there's two things."
…
Nothing.
Rosey had no goddamn clue what she was going to do.
She didn't have much money left, and she wasn't going back to Light, so she had rented a small room at the internet café for the night.
But a warm place to sleep for the night, hadn't given her any more clues as to how she was going to convince him, about Light.
It's not like she had any evidence, she didn't have a copy of the series on DVD.
'What the hell do I do?' Pondered Rosemary.
How would she get him to belief her without thinking she was crazy?
She couldn't really could she?
There wasn't a way she'd be able to save him.
'I suppose I could-.'
Rosemary's thoughts trailed off.
She gagged, then ran down the hall towards the toilets.
She began to dry heave.
How could she even think of something so sick?
They were people, she couldn't use them like that!
It didn't matter how logical it was.
'But maybe.' Thought Rosie. 'Just maybe.'
If she told the police about the murders in advance they could get Raye away.
It was probably the easiest way of getting to L. If she predicted the deaths in advance he'd think she was at least related to Kira, and would seek her out.
And there was a possibility, especially if she referenced Raye directly that he'd realise the immediate danger he was in with Light.
'But.' Thought Rose grimly.
There was an even stronger chance that the note would be dismissed by the taskforce, or would get to L too late.
They wouldn't know about the FBI after all, and even if after the event happened she got to meet with L.
All the FBI agents would be dead.
Rose bit her lower lip.
Could she sacrifice the FBI agents just so she could get an early meet up with L? I mean there was sure to be another opportunity right? The taskforce would be set up soon proper, and she could talk to them then, she certainly had enough information to be taken in for questioning at least?
*sniff*
Rosie was crying.
She'd felt bad about the first guy Light had killed, awful even. But she'd managed to tell herself it wasn't her fault, she couldn't pick up the notebook anyway.
But this.
Rose had an opportunity to save them if she could.
And she didn't know how.
She sat still for a while and kept on crying, like all the stress, and sadness and fear of her situation was finally dripping through the sockets in her skull.
'Only you decide when it's over.' Remembered Rose.
She had to keep going on she knew that, but how? She wasn't smart, she didn't have vast resources.
What did she do?
Rosey's eyes widened slightly, as the last of her tears fell away.
Well she could try, couldn't she?
Her head felt fatigued, and her nose was snotty. Her eyes were red, and her cheeks were covered in a barrage of slimy tears.
But now she felt a little better.
They weren't dead yet, She didn't know they would be til she tried to save them.
Rose smiled.
She could send the police a hundred letters if she had to; any information that was likely to get an response. Who was to say that Raye wouldn't listen to her at all? She wouldn't know til she went straight for it would she.
Rosemary sloppily wiped her face with her sleeve.
She should get to work, shouldn't she?
Rose reached for the complimentary stationary and started the first of many, important letters.
It was going to be a long night.
…
"So what'd you say Light." asked Ryuk with a wide grin.
"Do you want to make an deal?."
