A/N: Thank you for all the reviews. Yes guest she was shook :) when you make deals with strange glowing orbs, always be time specific. Thank you yoyayo, you should see this soon hopefully.
Hi Bone-meal!
That's fair enough, I can write quite fast so you were in luck last time, if I'm doing well you'll see this quite soon, but writing a whole chapter in a day is a bit much even for me. I'm hoping this chapter will explain why she hasn't outed light outright, so I won't spoil it here, I would have expanded on it last chapter, but I kind of ran out of time/space
For everyone else, hi! Hope you had a great pancake day, and an awesome Ъаъа Марта! Hope you like this.
Chapter 16: The Plan Comes Together
The group all turned to L, who seemed focussed on his cake.
Was he seriously not going to react to her at all? Were they just supposed to ignore what they'd found out about her?
Apparently they were, as L held up a piece of cake for Rose to take.
Rose herself, didn't really know how to react either.
Was L planning to unite the task force in confusion?
She awkwardly shuffled forwards, and took a seat besides him on the sofa.
Rose turned to the group, with a look of pure bemusement, that they seemed to return in kind.
"If you don't like this type there's others." Said L, after Rosemary didn't take the cake from him.
"I try to keep well stocked, so there's a lot of flavours to choose from."
Rose wasn't sure what she should do, so she slowly took the plate from L, and placed it on her lap.
She didn't make any moves to eat it, and the silence continued, as L kept on eating his own, before he paused.
"Oh dear." Said L, after a moment.
"I apologize Rose-chan, it seems I may have committed a terrible mistake." He said with such seriousness, Rosie was genuinely worried what he could have done.
The members of the group, who knew some English were also concerned.
"I never even asked if Ghosts could eat cake." He admitted with a frown.
Was he serious?
The group was flabbergasted.
"Ryuzaki! We are trying to solve a case here! Is this really important?" Yelled Aizawa, who had apparently had it with the odd detective.
L seemed unphased by the man.
"I fear I may have brought up bad memories for Rose, with my offer of cake. I never even considered if she could eat it. If I were never able to eat cake again, I would feel very devastated I imagine." He said this with a blank face, but his tone of voice made it sound like, he was talking about losing the ability to speak, or walk instead.
The rest of the group looked on in disbelief.
Did this guy seriously think, that was the worst thing about being dead?
He ignored them, and turned to Rose.
"I apologize if I brought up bad memories. I never meant to make you feel excluded."
Rosemary, who unable to speak japanese, had missed out on the insanity of their conversation, seemed amused by L's serious attitude, towards her ability to consume sweets.
She didn't have her notebook with her, but there was plenty of stationary lying around.
Grabbing a pen, she assured him, that she could in fact eat.
L smiled.
"I'm glad to hear that, Rose-chan. But I am wondering, does that mean you go to the bathroom too?" He asked with a completely blank face.
Rosemary's face was bright red.
"Ryuzaki, you can't just ask someone if they go to the bathroom!" Pointed out Mogi, who shocked the rest of the group, once they grasped what L had asked her.
"There's nothing embarrassing about going to the bathroom Mogi-san. Everyone does, If Rose-chan eats food, then logically, her body must make some kind of waste." Pointed out L.
Rose herself, just shook her head, and hoped L would drop it. It wasn't something she'd really thought about.
"Oh so you consume food, but you never go to the bathroom? I wonder what happens to the waste; your body clearly uses it for something. Maybe your body has become so efficient that it uses all of it for energy. If someone were to research you, the results could be highly useful towards the future of mankind." Mused L, who didn't seem to notice, or care how uncomfortable he was making her.
Did he seriously just imply, that she should be researched?
"Look Ryuzaki, my English is terrible, but even I can tell you're making Rose uncomfortable. Maybe we should lay off her, eh heh." Said Matsuda, awkwardly after a moment.
"Yeah, it's not any of our business what she does. If she's willing to help us, we should treat her with respect." Agreed Ide.
L bit his thumb.
"Perhaps you're right. Now that we've confirmed, she can enjoy cake, there are other pressing matters to address." He turned to Rose.
"I've been informed that perhaps my questions weren't appropriate."
Almost everyone, sweatdropped at that.
Did he really not come to the conclusion on his own?
"So for now we'll focus on the case. If you're going to help with this investigation I think you should be brought up to speed." Said L, who seemed to be in a much more serious mood now.
"As you predicted. A group of FBI agents died, on the 31st December. One of the members Raye Penber, exhibited unusual behaviour before his death. He was investigating two families before his death, and had already concluded that both were free of suspicion." L paused to study her face.
No hint of surprise, though she was clearly listening.
This much information, was already known to her at least.
"Because of his unusual behaviour, and your confirmation that Kira was present at the time of his death, we've decided to investigate his two targets further. Tomorrow morning my team, is planning to install cameras in the houses of the two families."
Her face seemed to focus more at that.
Interesting.
Rose hadn't reacted to anything he'd revealed before.
'I was planning to investigate the households even before her revelation. If the line of events she knows have yet to be altered, then why is this of interest to her?'
L bit his lip in contemplation.
'Kira is in one of the two households.'
It wasn't a new idea to him, but it was one he hadn't expected to have evidence of so quickly.
The possibility of one of the family members being Kira, had just gone up to 30%.
Of course this didn't make this investigation any more easy.
L had been counting on gaining Rose's trust over time, but if they were really this close to Kira, then he needed her to be reliable now.
If she withheld information then it could lead to his execution.
"We'll be monitoring their homes for any suspicious activity, though given how unlikely it is, this is really just a minor precaution." Continued L, being careful not to give away his latest case breakthrough.
Rose however still raised an eyebrow.
L frowned slightly.
It seemed she knew him well enough to know, that he had all but convicted the two families.
No. Misleading her this way would never work. She seemed to know his character too well, and he needed to get her to trust him now. He'd already given his word that he wouldn't have Kira killed on sight, but Rose obviously didn't trust him to not find a way out of their agreement.
Then it hit L
Just because he couldn't mislead her, didn't mean he couldn't manipulate her.
"Before we continue Rose, I'd like to ask you a further question."
Rose looked a little cautious but nodded.
"What's Kira like?" He asked casually.
She blanked, along with the rest of the group.
Where was he going with this?
'What do you mean?' She asked back.
"Describe what he's like. What's his character? Is he broody? Happy? Cool? Dull?"
Rosemary seemed to pause for a second before replying.
'I guess he was nice. When I left him, he was emotional. I think he was sad I was leaving. I didn't think when I left, he'd do all this.' She admitted.
"I see. Were you close then? You must have been if he was sad, or if you truly convinced him of the error of his ways." He stated plainly.
'I suppose we were. Is that important?'
"I'm just wondering. You see this case is very dangerous, and with you having been so close, I can't help but wonder. if you had to choose between Kira, and the taskforce right now, who would you let die?" Asked L with a deathly blank face.
"Ryuzaki! What kind of question is that?" Demanded Mogi, as Rose froze up.
"An important one." Stated L, as he turned to Rose.
"I will keep my promise not to kill Kira on site. But if there is any part of you that thinks, that you will put his life above those investigating this case. It would be best if you were to leave this case altogether."
Rose looked up at him, slightly shaken.
The group was in shock.
"Ryuzaki! You can't be serious!" Exclaimed Mr Yagami.
"We can't afford to put ourselves in any more danger than is absolutely necessary. If Rose values his life more than yours, she's a liability to the group." He stated plainly.
"I'm going to need an answer now if at all possible. Whilst your offer for help was appreciated, if you can't guarantee your support, I'm going to have to ask you to leave immediately." He said coldly.
Rose was still somewhat frozen.
She'd never thought that L would consider kicking her out. She knew she wasn't that smart of anything, but she'd always just assumed that the knowledge she had made her too valuable to ignore.
She frowned.
Was she being selfish? Watari had convinced her that sticking to her belief about not killing was noble, but was she just putting them all in danger?
If they were putting cameras in the house, then this was probably the best time to apprehend Light. She hadn't told Light about them, so he would be caught totally off guard.
Rose had her hands tightly clenched, by her sides, as L waited patiently.
She didn't want Light to die.
But still.
Rose glanced at the group.
She didn't want them to die either, and L was right she had to pick a side. There wasn't room to be sympathetic to Light here, not if she wanted him caught.
If Rose had to choose between them, then Light had already blown his chance to be helped by her.
She was going to have to trust L to be truthful, and if Light died anyway, she would have to accept the outcome.
With her mind made up, she admitted the terrible truth.
'Light Yagami is Kira.'
You could hear a pin drop once she wrote it down.
L was shocked.
For one thing, he was surprised she hadn't called his bluff. He couldn't risk her leaving the group, especially knowing they died without her assistance.
Tricking her into opening up, had been all too easy.
She may have distrusted him, but right from the start she'd been friendly with the task force. L had therefore made the logical conclusion, that the thought of her being the inadvertent cause of their deaths, would guilt trip her into telling them more key information. But even he didn't think she'd outright give them the name.
He had only hoped things would go this well.
"Is this a joke?" Asked a stone Faced Mr Yagami.
The group all suddenly turned to him. They'd been so caught up in at last knowing Kira's real identity, they hadn't even considered who it was.
Rose silently shook her head.
"YOU'RE LYING!" He insisted in a rare burst of anger, that shocked his co-workers.
"How dare you! My son is a straight A student on his way to university, he has dedicated his life to the law he would never! Never commit these atrocities, and you're suggesting he did all this right under my nose!?" He continued yelling, at Rosemary as she stared at her lap.
His face was red, his whole body shook with anger before suddenly draining as he went pale. In all this time he hadn't really looked at her. She'd felt familiar certainly, but he'd been focussed on the case.
He'd been so overwhelmed, and it had been months, but still.
How had he never noticed?
"You were at my house." He murmured, drawing more attention.
Rose's eyes widened.
The dinner.
It had been almost a month ago now, she'd even forgotten herself.
"Is this true Rose-chan?" Asked L seriously.
She nodded, before grabbing her notebook.
'Yeah. I was invited by Light to have dinner with his family one night.' She confirmed.
"Mr Yagami, this is very important. Do you remember what date it was on?" Questioned L.
Mr Yagami, paused for a moment, before replying with a haunted look on his face.
"I believe it was the 29th of November."
Rose had been at his home during the two week hiatus.
Soichiro looked woozy, and managed to find a seat.
There was almost no way of arguing against this.
He, the chief of police had seen someone who had contact with Kira, at his house when Kira was prevented from killing.
L nodded.
"With this information, I regretfully have no choice but to name Light Yagami, our chief suspect." Said L with a respectful tone.
"Rose. Any information to how he kills is vital. We're going to need more than your word alone to convict him." Admitted L.
Rosie nodded.
'He writes in a book. A black notebook, with the words 'Death Note' on the front cover in white lettering.' L stared intently at her paper as she wrote, whilst the task force reacted with shock.
A Book? In many ways it made sense. It was a murder weapon, no sane person would suspect, and it could be transported without suspicion.
But to think that something so inconspicuous could kill so many? It was inconceivable.
"Where did he get the book?" Asked Ide.
Rosemary's answer stunned them.
"A Shinigami."
"Shinigami are real?" Asked Aizawa.
"This case is becoming really extraordinary!" Exclaimed Matsuda.
L just sat, with widened eyes.
With all of Kira's references, the proof of ghosts, and mysterious heart attacks.
This knowledge still chilled him.
He felt himself hang just on the edge of sanity, as he considered screaming, to relieve the tension.
L turned to Rose instead, hoping to distract himself with her key information.
'The Shinigami follow the book's owner until their death. When you touch a piece of the book, you can see them. The owner of Light's book is called Ryuk. He isn't loyal to Light, but he isn't against him. He's a neutral party, who may or may not tell you things.'
"Well that's not very helpful."
The others were inclined to agree.
"Forgive me Rose-chan, but why didn't you take the notebook away?" Asked L after a moment.
Rosemary frowned.
'I can't. I tried, I was originally just going to burn it, and have this whole thing end before it even began, but I can't touch the notebook. I don't know why.'
Fascinating. It was most likely connected to her current state of living, but it was still puzzling. Being unable to touch the one thing they needed to convict him, must have been unbearable to say the least.
Rose continued writing.
'He kills by writing people's names in the book. But he has to keep their face in his mind; without the two it won't work.'
It was as L thought. Without both a name, and a face, Kira couldn't kill.
'However.' Began Rosemary.
'People who own a Death Note can make something known as the 'Eye Deal' and with that they are able to see people's names just by looking at them. But the price for this is half the person's life span, and Kira is too arrogant to make it.'
A Death Note, as in there was more than one?
No doubt if that was the case, the history of them must be buried in myths. Most owners probably used them for revenge, or got rid of them in fear no doubt. Clearly Kira was a rarity among owners. But how many were there exactly? Did she know?
L suspected that there would be at least one other owner turning up eventually. If Kira really was too arrogant to make the eye deal, then there was no real reason to mention it.
Unless someone else made it instead.
'But at the rate this investigation is going, it's doubtful it'll get that far.' Concluded L.
That being said if someone else gained a notebook, it wasn't out of the question for them to want to take over Kira's work, so he filed this information away for later.
'The only rules left I think you should know are these. One, You only need pieces of paper to kill victims, not the whole notebook. Light keeps pieces in his wallet to kill from a distance. The other thing you need to know is, the notebook can kill by means other than a heart attack.'
The group was chilled.
"So Kira could have killed even more victims than even we know about." Said Aizawa.
"And that means that if he has even a scrap of paper on him, he could kill everyone of us. If it really is Light then he already knows our names, and faces." Concluded Mogi, grimly.
L was thinking along different lines however.
Evidently there were other rules to the notebook, but he could ignore that for the moment.
This revelation certainly explained what was in the envelope no doubt. Only an FBI agent would have had access to the faces of the other agents. Under threat of Kira, Raye would have had no choice to obey him, and wouldn't have hesitated to sign a seemingly unimportant piece of paper.
But more importantly if Kira could kill in other ways. He could kill strategically in ways the Police would never investigate.
"This information is vital. Thank you Rose-chan, if we're going to convict Kira however, we need to know where he keeps the notebook." He admitted.
Rose nodded
'He keeps it in the top drawer in his desk. It has a false bottom you open by pushing a ballpoint pen cartridge through a hole in the bottom. DO NOT lift the false top off directly, it'll trigger an explosion. He has three security checks for his room. He leaves a pencil lead in the door, that will snap if you open it straight away. He also put a piece of paper in the door before he leaves. For the final check he adjusts the door handle manually, if you don't do the same it'll be at a 90̇° when you leave, and he'll know.'
L bit his thumb in contemplation. For someone in Kira's position this was a very thorough list of security measures. He didn't think he could do a better job himself.
"You've done us a great service by admitting this. There's only one thing I need to know, please answer honestly. Did you tell Kira about your knowledge of the future?" L asked seriously.
She shook her head, and wrote, 'He knows that I know things, but I never told him specifics. When I left Kira, he thought I was gone for good. He doesn't know I'm back, he'll have no idea that you know these things.'
L nodded, he did wonder why Kira would assume she was gone, but he kept his questions to himself. He turned to the group.
"I need you all to be prepared to apprehend Light once we have the notebook. The best time to do so would be as he returns from school that day, we'll need to restrain him so that he has no way of writing, or reaching for any paper on him."
The group nodded grimly, even Mr Yagami who seemed to slowly be coming to terms with the grim reality of the situation.
"We'll send in a crew tomorrow morning to retrieve the notebook. Once we have that we'll have all the physical evidence we need to convict him." Said L.
"If this goes well We'll have our suspect by tomorrow."
The group nodded, as Rose approached Mr Yagami.
The man was shaken by his thoughts, when she sat next to him.
"Sho um Yes?" He asked after a moment.
There was a sheepish silence between them, as Rose thought over what to say.
What could she say?
'I never meant to hurt you. Your son has done a lot of good, and I don't want you to ever feel ashamed because of his actions. I'm sorry about everything.'
He frowned.
"Er English no Good." He admitted, next to Matsuda he was probably the poorest speaker.
She paused, and wrote one word.
"Gomen Nasai."
Mr Yagami looked it over.
There were many ways to say sorry in Japan, and he didn't know if any of them could make up for the shame, and emptiness he felt inside.
But the effort to try, and make him understand how sorry she felt.
He could see it in her eyes.
'What does that really mean anymore?' He hadn't even noticed his own son killing, who was he to judge this woman's moral character.
But still.
He wanted to believe that she meant it.
Mr Yagami, nodded with a sad smile, and pocketed the piece of paper.
"If you don't mind Ryuzaki, I'd like to go home early today." He admitted.
L nodded, looking at his laptop.
"That's probably for the best, in fact I think you should all go home, and get some rest. If we're going to apprehend Kira tomorrow, you'll all need to be in top form. Though please don't give any indication, that anything about the case has changed."
The group all nodded. To be honest they couldn't believe it either. They'd worked with Light, it just seemed so far fetched. But if he really was Kira, then they had no choice but to apprehend him.
…
"Is there anything wrong Dad? You seem really quiet." Asked Light, as his father barely touched his food.
"It's nothing Light, it's just we don't seem to be making any progress with the Kira case. I'm worried we'll never catch him." He lied.
"What no way Dad! You're the best, you'll totally catch him!" Insisted Sayu.
"Sayu's right Dad. You have some of the best officers in the world on your side." Agreed Light.
Soichiro looked at Light and smiled. If he didn't know what he did now, he didn't know how he could see a trace of a killer in his son.
"I'm glad you two have confidence. I suppose one good thing is, as long as we don't make progress I can come home a little early." He said with a small laugh.
"Well as nice as it is to see you home, we all believe in you catching him." Said his wife, before kissing his cheek.
Glancing at his family, he wondered if they'd ever be like this again.
"Yes I believe we can catch him too."
…
L was looking over some cases with a cup of coffee.
He'd already informed his team that there would be a shift in operation. They were no longer planting cameras, but apprehending the notebook.
All that was left now, was to wait.
"You shouldn't have acted that way Ryuzaki."
Without turning L replied.
"She knew the situation too well for me to withhold information. It was the only way to ensure that she told us Kira's name."
"I think we both know you could have tried harder than that. It was disrespectful to imply she would choose the life of Kira over the group."
L pouted slightly. Watari hadn't disagreed with him, in quite a few years.
"Getting her trust would have taken too long. I stand by my decision, we now have Kira's name and the location of his weapon."
"Ryuzaki as L you are more than capable of preventing Kira's execution. All you would have had to do, was tell her that yourself." Accused Watari, as L drew into himself a little.
It was true that his name held weight, and provided the case was truly solved, he would be able to let the victim walk free in theory.
But.
"Will preventing his execution be just to the relatives of his victims? I have to think about more than the whims of some woman" Argued L.
"L Lawliet!"
There was something about that, that made L suddenly feel a lot younger.
"You promised that young lady that you would try to prevent his death. She has practically solved this case for you, so the least you could do is try to reach a compromise with her." He said firmly.
L frowned. She had filled in all the clues. He was confident that he could have solved it himself, but knowing about the notebook, gave much more credibility to his theories.
Reluctantly, he had to admit it WAS her, that had solved the case, and not he.
L bit his thumb, before looking at Watari.
"Where would I begin? I'm not the best conversationalist, it will most likely end rather awkwardly for the both of us."
Watari gave a knowing grin.
"I'm sure you'll manage. It can't be any more embarrassing than your first meeting with her, apparently you fainted."
L huffed.
"It's not funny."
He was certain that with her lack of vocal talent, and no cameras, he'd avoid anyone knowing.
"Now now Ryuzaki, it's a perfectly normal reaction. Why I'm certain she's already forgotten."
"I was right to accuse her loyalty. She's already betrayed me once."
"I'd hardly call it a betrayal Ryuzaki." Said the very amused old man, he hadn't been able to make fun of L like this in quite a few years.
"Regardless I don't think you have to worry about being awkward with her. She seems to be one of the most friendly women I've seen in quite some time."
L nodded slowly at this.
"Where is she Watari?"
"I believe she's eating Beef stew in the kitchen." He replied.
L cricked his neck.
"How convenient. I could go for something to eat myself." He said, stepping down from his normal sitting position, and walking hunched slightly.
Watari smiled.
"How convenient."
Meanwhile in the Kitchen Rosemary slowly spooned stew into her mouth as she zoned out. It seemed to turn to ash in her mouth, as she thought about how hurt Mr Yagami had looked, and how she couldn't do anything to save Light.
I mean a part of her had thought he was just a psychopath, but she'd gotten to know him. He had tried, he had cared. Even if he'd just wanted to get rid of her, that couldn't have been all there was to it.
"Rose-chan, do you mind if I join you?" Asked L, suddenly spooking her.
She didn't think he could see her, but apparently she'd been rocking one of the chairs with her foot.
She slowly nodded.
L cut himself a slice of chocolate cake she didn't know he had.
"I find the best way to end a case, is with Sweets. They help replenish your energy, and feed your brain cells." He said taking a bite.
Rose gave him a small smile, as they both ate in silence.
After a moment L made a bold move.
"Would you like to try some?" He asked, offering a forkful. He didn't often offer sweets, but he felt like he should make the exception.
Rose nodded after a moment, and offered her stew.
"No thank you, I don't like savoury things."
She shook her head, and offered it insistently.
'Is this my penance for dishonesty?' He wondered, as he reluctantly took a bite, and she got some of his sacred chocolate.
His eyes widened.
He hadn't had savoury food in years but this was unique. It held a light hint of spice, a rich meaty flavour he didn't care for much, but overwhelmingly a note of fruity sweetness.
"It's nice." He said after a moment, with Rose nodding in agreement.
He did wonder briefly if perhaps there was some merit to savoury foods after all. But one bite of his cake quickly dismissed that line of thought.
As they both finished there seemed to be a comfortable silence between them.
Where did L go from here?
"Would you like to see the balcony?" He asked.
From what he understood, a conversation between two people was supposed to be done in a more intimate setting. He could have suggested the bedroom, but he didn't want this being misunderstood.
Rose nodded with an amused smile, and they both made their way over.
The sun was already setting in the winter season. The weather was mild in Tokyo for once, and all the buildings were illuminated in a beautiful sunset.
Rose's eyes shone with a childlike glee, that L was unfamiliar with. She was captivated by the sun set it seemed. L turned to the golden lit city, and tried to understand, but he felt a disconnect somehow. But with her.
Looking back he saw something fascinating. Such joy and happiness seemed contagious, and seemed to radiate from her very core. As L looked at his hands, he could swear that they were tingling with warmth.
As he did this Rosemary finally looked away, and sat on one of the outdoor chairs.
L sat on the opposing one, and Rosie had a childish urge to imitate his way of sitting. She used to be able to do it, but she didn't think it made her any smarter.
They were both quiet as Rose waited with anticipation for L to speak, and L carefully considered his words.
"Rose-chan there is something I must admit."
She waited for him to continue.
L was not used to this at all, and felt very uncomfortable.
"I believe that with my influences I could allow Kira to be released." He said after a moment.
Rosemary's face lit up, but quickly fell as he continued.
"However I must admit. I don't think I could justify letting a killer go free, even if he has lost his memories." He turned away, unable to look at her, before daring to glance back.
L's eyes widened.
"Rose-chan, you're crying."
Rosemary put a hand up to her eye.
Again? Really? Could she not get through anything, without breaking down? What was wrong with her?!
L seemed to freeze, and recede into himself slightly.
He wasn't good with emotional moments, and having his key source of information, burst into tears was awkward.
L assumed he should comfort her in someway, but he had no idea how he was supposed to approach this situation.
It felt like an eternity passed, as he stared at her sobbing.
He didn't know how to respond to this.
Rose in the middle of her crying, suddenly felt a graceless hand, clumsily pat her head.
She looked up to see an unsure L, trying to make her feel better.
"Rose-chan." He said after a moment.
Rose tried to stop her tears, but nodded to show she was listening.
"I cannot justify letting Light Yagami walk free. But I promised you I would not let him die."
Her sniffles were getting softer.
"Would you be willing to compromise with Light Yagami's life imprisonment."
She tried to calm herself down, as she thought it over.
Light Yagami had so much more potential, could she really accept that being wasted as justice?
But with all he had done, and all the people he'd murdered. She saw L's point. Even if losing all the memories, made him innocent, his crimes wouldn't disappear.
It probably didn't seem fair to him, that he should be allowed to go free.
L moved his hand away, as she moved to write.
'I understand that you don't feel you can do that. But can you promise me. If Kira even after everything, asks for a second chance, knowing he won't remember what it was like to be where he is now, you'll let him have that second chance.'
L grabbed the paper between two long fingers.
Glancing at her, he understood what she meant. Kira was an arrogant man, who valued his crown as much as his life. If it came down to it, would Kira, the man capable of wiping every criminal off a map, choose to throw it all away.
And if he did, would L let him get away.
Looking at Rose, he saw a level of compassion he didn't think he'd ever be capable of. There were few people he associated with such kindness, and one of them was the reason he'd agreed to this talk.
"Yes." He said after a minute.
"If Light Yagami is willing to give it up. I will allow him to do so."
Her face seemed to shine once more.
Fascinating. She truly believed she could get him to do it. L was confident that Kira would never do so, but he had no reason to crush her optimism.
He was surprised however, when she suddenly flung herself at him.
He was still for a moment, almost forgetting to breathe before his arms found their way around her.
She was warm and comforting, like a nice dream.
As he glanced towards the last dim of the setting sun, he couldn't help but wonder if this is what she felt, when she saw the sun set.
Rose moved over, and wrote one word before handing it to him.
He was surprised to see the word 'Friend' on there.
"You consider me a friend?" He asked after a moment.
She nodded with a notable smile, which L returned in Kind.
"I'm flattered Rose-chan. I believe you're the first friend I've ever had." He admitted.
It seemed like there was a nice mood between them, and that nothing more be said.
The temperature was dropping now that the sun had gone, so the two both went inside, and L showed her to her room.
"There's an ensuite there if you want to shower, and there's more food in the kitchen if you get hungry. Though I'd appreciate it if you left the strawberry cake alone, it's my favourite." Said L.
Rose nodded, and grabbed her pajamas from her bag.
"I can ask Watari to wake you tomorrow if you want. We can also get you more clothes, I hope you don't mind going alone, I have no eye for fashion." He admitted.
She smiled, and L made his leave.
Rosemary needed a shower after today. The amount of emotional turmoil, was more than she could bare. But now she was more confident than ever.
If their friendship meant anything at all, she was certain beyond belief that she could get Light to give up the Death note. He didn't have to die, he didn't have to rot behind bars. He could do so many things, it was the right thing to do.
Refreshed and free of guilt, for what had seemed like forever, Rose brushed her teeth, and hair, and spent the rest of the evening, comfortably watching tv before she fell asleep.

"Let's see who Rosemary Heid Green really is." Mused L, as he looked through the world's databases all night.
