A/N: Sorry for the delay, I would have liked to get this out a couple of weeks ago, but I've been a bit busy. But hey I hope getting two at once makes it up to you. Anyway I'm sure you'll enjoy watching things fall apart, and please let me know if there are any major typos here, or in other chapters, I'd love to sort them out :)
Also if I don't reply, really fucking sorry. I'm actually getting way more reviews than I used to so, it's been hard to keep up. If you really want to talk, feel free to message me, and I should reply. Please feel free to let me know what you think.
Chapter 17: The Mask Crumbles
Soon enough it was three O'clock in the morning.
Rosemary was fast asleep in her bedroom, but L was wide awake.
He'd been working for hours. Compiling data, matching records, and looking through physical piles. But as the hours went on, he could only reach one grim conclusion.
Rosemary H. Green was not on any record.
It was possible that she had a fake I.D, but then that raised the question of why?
She couldn't speak, how good could she really be as an F.B.I agent, or a smuggler? She acted like the perfect citizen, and he'd been able to steal from her with ease.
He bit his thumb in frustration.
L prided himself on his ability to read people but this didn't make sense.
It was her lack of speech that particularly irked him.
When you had a disability like that, you received funding. As soon as you were diagnosed, there were countless records of it. But there was nothing that revealed a hint of Rosemary's condition.
It was as if she'd never existed.
There was something he was missing here, something impossible, yet obvious.
'Could it be that being dead has somehow erased her?' He mused.
No that was stupid. If that were the case, no one would have a concept of death to begin with.
But there was definitely something strange occurring here.
There was now a 20% chance that Rosemary's exact origins were even stranger than he first imagined. The problem was his only source of information was her. Meaning if he wanted to know where she came from, she was the only person who could tell him.
He was hoping he could find out more information about her family, her hobbies, anything that could be useful.
But there wasn't even a record of her birth, let alone her death.
There was such scarce information, that he'd taken to looking into Ghosts as a whole instead.
Unfortunately that had given even fewer results.
Oh there were definitely accounts of the afterlife, but nothing that seemed to hint towards the sort of presence Rose suggested.
'But'
She had been injured in someway, so L continued his search. Anything that could be used against Rosemary would be a useful precaution. It wasn't that he didn't trust her so much, oh no she seemed like a well meaning person. But her ability to leave without being restrained, put him at a considerable disadvantage. She knew his name, and if she ever decided to side against him, L could quickly find himself in a lot of trouble.
L had spent years preparing for every possibility, and now that the Kira case was coming to a close, he had to deal with something much more dangerous.
As L glanced at the clock he noted how late it was. He wasn't fond of sleep, but he should grab something sugary, whilst he had the chance.
Standing up from his unusal position, L cracked his neck, and stretched, before assuming a hunched posture. As L walked towards the kitchen he couldn't help but find himself drawn to Rosemary's room.
The door was partially open, and L could see the light of an anime playing softly on the TV.
He shuffled forward, and peered inside. What he saw surprised him.
'She's visible.' He realised, with shock. His mind was soon buzzing with all the implications.
Was she really awake? Did this happen always when she slept? Could she do this when she was awake?
Her light moaning, as she turned on her side, drew him out of his thoughts.
She looked peaceful.
L had doubts that she would turn against him. Between her peaky complexion, and her still bandaged hands, she didn't look like she could hurt a fly.
'Most people would call her cute, rather than threatening.' Considered L. He wasn't an expert on cuteness, but he wasn't so ignorant, he couldn't recognise it in front of him. She was like a small puppy, swamped in the large comfy sheets.
Stepping lightly L returned her I.D. He already had copies, and it would be easier to deny his involvement without, the evidence on him.
He glanced at her, to check she was sleeping.
L needn't have worried, she looked exhausted. It was easy for him to forget that not everyone could do, what he did. The burden of Justice was a heavy one, and not just anyone could carry it.
'But nevertheless. She's been fairly impressive.' L had to admit.
She had been unable to speak at all, let alone Japanese. She'd been unable to touch the murder weapon, or contact him. But through all of it, she'd pushed forward.
It was in it's own way admirable.
L found himself smiling slightly, but quickly neutralised his face. He had other things to focus on after all.
As he got up to leave, he turned back to turn the tv off, and gave her one last glance before he closed her door.
Back in the kitchen, he helped himself to a lovely pavlova, and a smooth hot chocolate.
The sweetness did little to calm his mind.
He and his group would have to be in top form tomorrow. Once Light Yagami, had left for school that day, they would swiftly be entering the house to apprehend the Death Note.
He had no doubt that it would be emotional for the task force.
They had close connections to him after all, especially Chief Yagami. L could only relate so much. There had been people he knew, that had to be brought to Justice. But so great was his desire to see cases solved, that the culprit's relation to him rarely mattered.
There were times where he considered there might be something wrong with him.
L purposefully detached himself, like any great detective, but his ability, to feel, and emote was flawed. His knowledge regarding such things was shallow, beyond what he knew about manipulating the feelings of others.
L gripped his mug.
Of course such manipulation had consequences.
This night had been disappointing for L in terms of intel, but it was only the precursor to a winning victory. L downed the last of his drink, and sat down, and closed his eyes.
Maybe he would sleep this time.
…
"Wake up miss Rose." Said a cool, calming voice.
Rose woke up feeling happy, and was glad to see Watari.
The bed, had swamped her with warmth, and comfort, and she had to heave the large amount of covers off of her, in order to escape.
"There's food in the kitchen, but I would be happy to prepare something for you if you'd like?" He offered.
Rosemary considered.
It was probably selfish to ask but..
'I don't suppose English Breakfast would be on offer?' She asked tentatively.
Watari smiled warmly.
"Certainly, I'm partial to it myself from time to time. Although my charge doesn't have much taste for it. Do you like black pudding?" He asked sweetly.
Rosie nodded.
She knew not everyone was a fan of it, but she had no problem with black pudding, or liver, or kidney, or things of that sort.
Now marmite, that was a different story altogether.
"It shouldn't take long then. It's been awhile since I've cooked meat." Admitted the old man, leaving the room.
As Rose sat on the edge of the bed, she couldn't help but smile.
She knew she should feel worse about today. Someone she was close to, someone she'd tried to help was going to jail. But there was a part of her, that couldn't help but be optimistic.
She didn't know if she was going to be around much longer, or what would even happen if she was, but she had to hope that Light would choose life, over prison.
Still, there was a small part of her that wanted to stay here in bed. To just let L sentence him, and have that be that.
But she'd befriended him, hadn't she?
"It wouldn't be right, if I didn't see this to the end." Decided Rosemary.
Getting up, she looked through her bag of clothes with a frown. Rose missed having variety to choose from, but opted for her usual blue shirt, and jeans once more.
As Rosemary tied up her hair, she glanced at the tv.
'Did I turn it off last night?' She didn't remember doing that, she'd been so tired, she'd just kind of fallen asleep watching something.
Rosemary shrugged. She probably just forgot.
Walking through the softly lit hallway, she made her way to the kitchen. Rose was alone, bar a perfectly cooked English Breakfast.
'I guess Watari, takes his meals elsewhere.' She concluded.
Sitting down, she could almost feel her eyes water with joy, after the first bite.
"Mmm so good! I forgot how amazing bacon is." She said, quickly cutting another piece.
She was only halfway through when L shuffled in, through the door.
Rosemary couldn't tell if he'd slept or not. His hair, and clothes were always ruffled, and his voice didn't sound any deeper.
Rose tapped the counter so he could see her. He looked a little unnerved at her ability to be unseen, but didn't do anything drastic.
"Good morning Rose-chan, I trust you slept well." He said, immediately going towards the coffee machine.
Rose nodded, holding a thumbs up.
"I'm glad to hear it. In two hours we'll be apprehending the notebook. I understand that you're attached to Light Yagami, so I'd hate for you to be in bad shape." He said blankly as he grabbed a strawberry pavlova.
Rose raised an eyebrow. She wasn't sure why he bothered. It was obvious to both of them that he didn't care how she felt about Light Yagami's capture.
'But I guess it's better that he's pretending to be nice, than genuinely being a dick.' Considered Rose.
'Don't worry I'm fine. I'm totally prepared.' She wrote.
"That's good. I'd hate for you to be upset after all." He said with a mouthful.
He swallowed.
"By the way."
Rose looked up.
"I've been meaning to ask you. Do you know sign language? I assumed not since you're always writing down, but I was wondering why you never learned." He asked, with genuine curiosity.
'I guess it is weird that I don't know sign language.' Considered Rose.
It wasn't something she'd really thought about all that much, but she didn't see harm in telling him the truth.
'Actually I spoke normally before I died. It's part of the rules of me being here that I can't speak to you.'
"There are rules to you being here?"
'There are limits to how I interact with the world.'
'So there are some constraints to her power.' Considered L.
"Such as?"
'Well I can't touch the Death Note, I can't be seen unless I want to, and I'm here until I fulfill my purpose.' She explained.
"I see. So being able to be here, comes at the cost of limited interaction with the world." Confirmed L, as he continued eating his pavlova.
Well this explained why her disability wasn't registered, but it didn't explain her lack of records in general.
'There's something I'm missing.' Concluded L.
" If you don't mind me asking Rose. What is your purpose?"
'I had to choose something. So I decided I wanted to bring justice to this case. I wanted to do things right.' Wrote Rose.
L chewed for a second.
"Did you know any of the victims personally."
Rose looked confused.
'No.'
'Interesting. She came back to help with a case, she has no personal involvement in.'
Of course he did the same, at first. But it was very different for a civilian to involve themselves in something like this.
"Miss Green, why did you choose this case?" He asked, more formerly.
Rose paused.
'Because I thought I could help people.'
L paused his next mouthful, and smiled.
"I suppose I did too."
Rose smiled back.
They both ate their respective breakfasts, with L stirring sugar in his coffee, until his drink was more paste, than fluid.
…
Back at the Yagami house, Soichiro was sick to his stomach.
He'd scarcely slept through the night. His eyes were so tired, he could pass for the mysterious detective himself.
He'd cried at one point that night. He'd ended up going to the bathroom, so his wife didn't hear.
But he was no longer consumed with grief as he had been before.
Soichiro was angry.
How could he have raised a son, who believed such a thing was okay? That such actions were just, and fair?
He was willing to let his father spend hours tracing loose ends, and tear their family apart with worry. When he was the cause all along.
'Was he always like this?' Wondered Mr Yagami briefly.
Had he been so blinded by his son's intelligence that he'd never seen how extreme he could be?
'No.' He decided firmly.
There had been good in his son. A sense of right, and wrong.
The notebook, had misguided him, and had he never found it, Soichiro firmly believed his son would be on the right path towards Justice.
'That girl.' He thought.
She was adamant about saving his son's life, and giving him the chance to get away.
He didn't know if he could say the same.
As an officer - No, as a human being, he was fundamentally opposed to Kira, and all that he stood for.
But regardless he was glad, that there was someone out there, who had more mercy to give to Light than he did.
And maybe just maybe.
His son could still be alright.
…
Light woke up at 6am like always.
Despite the upcoming finals, and his work as Kira, he'd found it surprisingly easy to maintain a schedule.
It helped that he didn't like many of his friends anyway, and they were all busy studying too.
Flipping through the notebook, he couldn't help but be satisfied with his work.
"This is too easy." He said, putting it back behind the desk backing.
"You're not worried about getting caught? What if Rose comes back for you?" Asked Ryuk.
Light smirked.
"I wouldn't worry about her. She's only a threat so long as my plans don't change from her timeline. I don't think she's smart enough to actually figure out what my next move is on her own. Even if she leads L right here, that'll just give me an excuse to get that much closer to eliminating him."
"I guess you're right. Is that why you dismantled the drawer?" Asked the Shinigami.
Light nodded.
"If she tells them about me, and the information is wrong they'll be more inclined to distrust her. Humans are pretty suspicious at times Ryuk. We're not exactly open to Ghosts telling us what to do."
Ryuk grinned.
"Oh I see. Well that'll be a shame, she seems to want to help you."
Light frowned slightly, before grinning, and scoffing.
"I don't need helping Ryuk. I'm the brightest student of my generation. What I need is for the police to get out of the way, and let Kira work."
Ryuk just shrugged.
"If you say so."
…
"Hey dad what's going on?" Asked Light when he went downstairs.
Mr Yagami wasn't normally here in the mornings, long enough for Light to see him anymore.
His dad looked ragged, and more sullen than he'd seen him in quite some time.
Soichiro looked at him, and for a second Light, could swear his father was glaring at him. But it must have been his imagination, as his father smiled.
"It's nothing Light. I just didn't get much sleep last night. I think this case is really starting to do me in."
Light felt his lips twitch, as he almost smirked.
"Maybe you should take a break dad. I understand that the case is important and all, but don't neglect your health." He said, with a tone of concern, and a frown.
Soichiro stared at him for a second.
'If it weren't for that evidence I would never suspect him of being Kira.'
There was a part of him that was still hoping now, but the evidence. It was too much to be a coincidence surely.
"Maybe you're right Light. To be honest I'm hopeful that we'll soon make a breakthrough."
"That's the spirit. Anyway, I've got to go Dad. Take it easy alright." Said Light, grabbing an apple from the fruitbowl.
Mr Yagami nodded, with a slight frown.
"Goodbye Light, have a nice day at school."
As the door closed. Mr Yagami didn't know how to feel.
But there was a sinking feeling in his stomach. As he realised, that may have been the last time he would see his son, go to school ever again.
…
L had been informed that Mrs Yagami, and their youngest daughter, had both left the house. Mr Yagami was already on his way to the hotel, along with the rest of the task force. It was the same location as last time, but hopefully this would be the last time, any of them would have to meet.
L was already in contact with the team going in. He was monitoring them via a small camera, that gave his laptop feedback, and was communicating via headset. Rose, was sitting on one of the opposing sofas.
After the technology interference that occurred last time, L didn't want to risk having her break his feed.
"Sir do we have the all clear to go in." Asked Captain Shikima.
"Not yet. There are some people still going to work. Please wait a few minutes until the area is more clear of witnesses." Ordered L.
"Understood Sir."
This operation seemed like it was going to go off without a hitch.
L was almost disappointed.
Whilst the saving of lives could never be underestimated, he would have liked more of a challenge.
That was part of his motivation as a detective afterall.
He didn't do just any cases. He did the hardest, the impossible.
But one civilian had managed to solve it, by just knowing the boy's face, and the weapon itself.
Still there would be other cases.
L was currently looking into, a sex trafficking operation in Korea, which had some high profile victims.
He would have more challenges to work on.
But there was a part of him that doubted this case was solved.
There seemed to be a mystery, that hadn't yet been unravelled.
He glanced at Rosemary out of the corner of his eye.
Yes, the only loose end was her.
There were so many things he didn't know about Rose and so few ways to find out.
He didn't even know her middle name. Hannah? Hermione?
It was annoying him to be honest.
"She said that she couldn't speak to me because of her limits as a ghost. But I wonder if she'd be able to talk to something else perhaps."
She'd all but confirmed that Shinigami were real. Could it be possible for her to talk to things that he could not?
Rosemary meanwhile, felt a turning in her guts. She didn't know why she was nervous. She hadn't told light anything, but still this seemed unreal.
This was really happening.
"Rose-chan."
Rosie looked up at L for a second.
Had he been staring at her?
"Are you sure you want to be here? I'm sure Watari wouldn't mind making you a cup of coffee."
Was it that obvious she was nervous?
Rosemary shook her head.
'I'm fine. Don't worry about it.' She wrote, chucking it to him.
She didn't expect it to hit him in the face.
L froze for a second, before picking it up, with a very miffed look on his face.
Rose couldn't help but let out a small laugh.
L was stopped from responding, by the incoming Task force.
"Has the operation started yet?" Asked the stone faced Chief.
"Not yet. Your neighbourhood, has a lot of late commuters." Explained L.
"Please, take a seat." He said, gesturing to the luxurious sofas.
"I'd rather stand thank you." Insisted the Chief.
"Suit yourself. This probably won't take long anyway." Said L.
"Man, I can't believe the case is already coming to a close." Said Matsuda.
"Yeah, and Light Yagami of all people. To tell you the truth, I don't think I'll believe it until, I see the notebook." Said Aizawa.
The chief remained silent. As far as he was concerned, he has already lost his son.
"Sir the area is clear. Permission to go in?" Confirmed the Captain.
L looked at Saichiro, to confirm he was okay with it before replying.
"Yes, but please proceed with caution. We don't want to cause a disturbance." Warned L.
The group walked up to the Yagami household. They were dressed professionally, so as to not raise suspicion in such a well to do neighbourhood.
"Sir we're in."
"Head into the second bedroom on the right. The notebook should be in the top desk drawer. Let me know if any obstacle comes up."
"Understood."
Rose understood the logic in keeping her away, but she kind of wished she was closer to the camera. She wasn't happy about being away from the action, and it wasn't helping to make her any less anxious. Especially when she didn't know what they were saying.
L meanwhile, seemed totally absorbed by what he was seeing on screen.
'There's a piece of paper in the door, and the handle has been adjusted like she said.' Concluded L. It wasn't a major thing to change about the room, so most people wouldn't even notice.
The group removed the paper, and the pencil lead from the doorway before going inside.
One of the men approached the desk drawer.
"Sir it's locked, how do you want us to proceed?"
Locked?
L glanced at Rose.
'She never mentioned anything about the drawer being locked? Did she forget?'
Such a mistake seemed impossible, but she did give them a lot of information. Could it be it simply slipped her mind?
"Go on to pick the lock." Ordered L.
"On it sir."
The lock was picked, and the drawer was opened.
L bit his thumb.
The taskforce gasped.
"Sir are you seeing this?"
"Yes." L stared at Rosemary.
"Does this mean that Light's?" Matsuda left the question unanswered.
The entire group turned on a bewildered Rose, with accusing eyes.
"What should we do sir?" Asked the Laptop.
"Check the bookshelf, the bed, any area of the room. There's a possibility it could still be in there. Notify me immediately if you find anything."
"Understood." Said Shikima, before ordering the group.
"Rosemary there is no notebook in the drawer." Explained L, much to her horror.
"Not only is there no notebook. There is no false drawer. You told me, and the task force, that you did not reveal information to Light Yagami. Was this a lie?" Asked L with a serious look on his face.
Rosemary desperately shook her head from side to side, before frantically writing her reply.
'No I never told him anything, he shouldn't even think I'm alive.'
"There you go again, saying he shouldn't know you're alive. You've still yet to give an explanation for why he would believe you're out of the picture." Pointed out L.
"I don't think I need to tell you how serious this is. This not only puts all of your accusations into question, it significantly reduces the chance of Light Yagami being a suspect."
Saichiro, sunk to his knees, unable to take it. He didn't realise how emotional the idea of his son, being Kira had really gotten to him.
"So there's still a chance my son is innocent." He said with almost a sigh of relief.
"Of course there's a chance." Claimed Aizawa. "We've all worked with Light, did any of us really believe he had a magic killing notebook?"
"But what about her being at their house? The piece of paper, the lead? Even if the notebook isn't there, she clearly knew something about the way Light's room was set up." Pointed out Mogi.
"And none of you find that the least bit suspicious? How do we know she didn't plant evidence there to take eyes off of the real kira?"
Everyone's eyes widened.
Could it be, that this whole time they'd been following someone who was leading them away from the real suspect?
"You've got a point. I mean she did sound like she thought of Kira, of all people as a friend." Agreed Ide.
"And with her powers, she could have broken into their house and planted whatever she wanted. In fact chief, didn't someone break into your house, shortly after the murders started?" Pointed out Ukita.
Soichiro's eyes widened.
"I-yes you're right, someone did break into my house around that time. Though nothing was ever taken." He said, looking at Rose, with newly suspicious eyes.
Rosemary meanwhile, had only their accusing eyes to go off of, to know she was in trouble.
'What? But he is Kira, I can prove it.'
"Without the notebook, you claim exists, all we have are coincidences regarding you two having contact, and his meeting with Raye Penber." Explained L, amidst the Task force's argument.
"That's enough to suspect, but it means we have no real grounds for detaining him. In fact given the nature of your ability, we now have reason to suspect that you could have placed evidence to draw away from the real Kira." He pointed out.
Rose was shocked.
'You can't seriously believe that.' She wrote hurriedly.
"All the evidence suggests that even if your information was true, Light Yagami was somehow made aware of it. At this point, the only logical conclusion is that you told him about it yourself."
L looked at her coldly.
"At best, you've incompetently compromised this entire mission, and at worst you are actively working with Kira, and planted the evidence we've seen at the scene of the crime."
"Ryuzaki." Said Mr Yagami, standing up.
L turned to him.
"What does this mean for my son?"
L glanced at Rose.
This seemed too convenient.
Their chief suspect, had suddenly become a poor victim accused of a crime, he never committed.
But still, L no longer had the evidence to outright arrest Light, nor did he have the support of the Task Force, he'd need to detain him.
"In light of this discovery, we'll need to change our tactics. The group I've sent in will inform me if they find anything amiss, if nothing is found. I'd like to return to our original plan of installing cameras." Said L.
"Seriously? You're trusting that she hasn't tampered with anything?" Accused Aizawa.
"Whist Rose's predictions have not been completely accurate, there's still too much overlay for me to say for certain that he isn't Kira. All the security checks regarding the door were there as she said, they would be. If we place cameras there he should be completely unaware." Insisted L.
'Although if she did tell him anything. There could be a possibility, that something will be missed.' Considered L, with a frown.
"I'll allow it." Insisted the Chief.
"I came here this morning, expecting to have to arrest my son. If that doesn't show my dedication to this case I don't know what will. Comparatively, cameras are no price to pay at all."
"I'm glad to have your support."
"But what do we do about her?" Asked Ide.
"She can go anywhere. What's to stop her from following us on the case, and leaking information back to Kira?"
"I've considered that already. For the time being, me and Watari, will keep watch over her. Whilst we can do little to physically restrain her, we will be aware if she has left, and be able to change our plans accordingly." He turned to the group with a stern look.
"For the moment Rosemary will be suspended from the case, and no information will be directly given to her. She hasn't given any indication that she understands Japanese, but we can't rule out the possibility of her leaking it to someone who does."
That seemed to pacify the group, who continued to discuss amongst themselves.
L meanwhile looked at the shaking woman, who had become a major suspect in under five minutes.
He didn't doubt his initial assessment of her. If she had leaked information to Light, he had no doubt it had been done through incompetence, and not genuine attempts to frame Yagami for the crime.
But that didn't change the fact that her story was outlandish, the task force knew Light, and a key component of her accusation had fallen apart.
'Rosemary you idiot.'
Rose could feel her hands shaking. She felt like she was going to be sick, she didn't understand.
But how?
She hadn't told him anything.
She'd barely hinted that things would go wrong for him using the notebook. Could he really have used such little information to change everything she knew?
But he thought she was dead.
And now they thought she'd framed him?
Would she be able to get their trust in time to save them? Would they even let her near the investigation?
"Sir we've checked the room. We haven't found anything amiss, and we haven't found a notebook matching the description you gave us." Said the Captain, causing the task force to go quiet, as they all but condemned Rosemary.
"Thank you Shikima. I would like you to instead proceed with our original plan. Please leave the room exactly as you left it, including the security checks on the door."
"Understood sir."
That was that.
"Watari, please set up the screens here if you will. The cameras should be live by the afternoon."
"Of course Ryuzaki."
"Ukita, I'd like you to go to manage the desk at the Police Station. There's still a possibility, that someone will call in with useful information. As for the rest of you, continue with your ongoing investigations, if anything comes up alert me at once."
They all nodded, and headed on their way.
L turned to Rosemary.
Did she look more serious?
"If you don't mind Rose, I'd like to escort you somewhere else."
Rose nodded.
She wasn't going to lie, there was a part of her that felt like crying. But she wasn't some weak easily manipulated, little girl.
She was clever, and she was thinking.
It didn't matter why Light changed his room, or how he knew to do that for the moment.
What mattered, was she needed to regain everyone's trust.
As they walked, she couldn't help but stare at L.
Did he really think that Light wasn't Kira?
He'd been pretty adamant in the show.
'I guess he can't act even if he does think that.' Realised Rose.
'Anyway think. Light disabled the drawer, and moved the contents. Why? What could have motivated him to do that?'
She couldn't think of any time he would have seen her come back. Could he have concluded that he would have to move it anyway? No he never even considered it until Misa entered the picture, it was too simple a setup to abandon without reason. The key was a pen for god's sake-
A pen!
Rose quickly began scribbling, and handed L her note.
'Was there a hole in the desk for the pen?'
L looked at her.
"You realise even if there was, that doesn't guarantee the drawer was once secured right?"
Rosemary nodded. It might not, but it would put another piece of evidence in her favour if it was, and she needed all the help she could get.
L pulled a mobile from his pocket. Was that Matsuda's? And called a number.
"Hello, Shikima I need you to check the drawer for a small hole in the base. One just big enough for a biro pen cartridge to get through."
They both waited in tense silence.
"I see thank you." Said L, turning off the phone.
"There was." Confirmed L, much to Rose's relief.
She couldn't help but smile despite the situation.
L decided he didn't mind her smile.
"This doesn't clear your name, but we'll take it into account. In the meantime please follow me." Said L walking to one of the end rooms.
It had a couple monitors, that Watari was slowly moving into the main room.
"The task force will no longer trust you watching with them for the moment, and I can't dismiss you from potentially tampering with evidence. If you want to help clear your name, you won't leave this room. Watari will be keeping an eye on you."
L saw her frown.
"You should know there's only a 5% chance of you being involved."
Rose gave him a look.
They both knew how he used percentages.
"I'm serious." He said.
Rosemary gave him a small smile, as Watari walked in.
"Ah hello Miss Green."
Rose turned to him, and gave a little wave. Glancing back at L, was he smiling?
"Watari keep an eye on her, I need to get back to the case." Said L, leaving rather suddenly.
They both stared at the door for a second?
What was that?
"My, my you seem to have a way of flustering Ryuzaki." Chuckled Watari.
'I guess I do.' Thought Rosie.
"In any case I wouldn't worry. I don't think L takes the allegations of you tampering with evidence seriously."
Well that was good.
"I've just got to move these last two. If you wouldn't mind giving me a hand." He asked gesturing to one of the screens.
Rosemary picked it up with ease.
She had a little bit of strength to her arms, thought she certainly had her limits.
Either way, Watari looked a little surprised, but didn't say anything.
As they entered the main room, Rose did her damndest to be invisible. She didn't want to see the entire task force accusing her of helping Kira.
How did she go from being the number one ally, to the number one suspect so quickly?
"Where would you like me to put this Ryuzaki?"
L's eyes widened slightly. Her ability must have cloaked Watari.
"Put them on the green table with the other two. If you connect the cables, they should run as soon as we have a feed." Explained L.
She stood next to him, as he connected the wires. Glancing at L she couldn't help but wonder.
Did he really believe she was innocent?
'I really hope so.' Thought Rose.
"They should be connected now." Said Watari, after a moment.
"Thank you Watari." Said L, looking at his Laptop.
Watari started walking out with Rose by his side.
"Did Watari bring in two at once?" Asked Matsuda.
"You're probably just not paying attention. You've got to focus on the case, not the damn screens." Said Ide.
"I guess you're right."
They did their usual routine, but didn't make much progress. Light Yagami was really the only lead they had, even if that had now been put into question.
L received a message about four hours later that all the cameras had been installed. It was quite a tedious task even for such a well equipped team.
It didn't help that they'd decided to also monitor Deputy Director Kitamura, since not only was his family also watched by Raye Penber, but if Rosemary had leaked information, his family was the next most likely suspect for having contact with the real killer.
It was agreed that Watari would monitor the Deputy, with Rosemary also under his surveillance, and that L would monitor the Yagami household alongside Mr Yagami.
There was an unspoken agreement that having Rosemary monitor the Yagamis would have been, inappropriate to say the least.
It was early but the rest of the task force had headed back to the police headquarters. Since they didn't want to pry on their Chief's family, it was agreed that they would continue their own tasks from there for the moment.
"Are you sure about Watching this?" Asked L.
"I have to know for sure." Insisted Mr Yagami.
"Very Well."
The Cameras were Live.
But what would they find?
