Esther was excited as she entered the car of her new adoptive mother named Petunia Dursley. The woman had a long neck and her face resembled that of a horse in her opinion. She hadn't met Petunia's husband yet, but Petunia had gushed on and on about how handsome her new father was. She would have a baby brother named Dudley and she was looking forward to meeting him. Due to her condition, she'd never had a child of her own and she was looking forward to getting rid of Petunia so she could take her place. She was picture perfect for the Dursley's lifestyle: older than Dudley, a pianist, an artist, polite, pretty, and had a conservative dressing style. She wasn't surprised when she was immediately adopted by Petunia, although she had to hide her glare when the woman told her that she got her a speech therapist to get rid of her 'filthy and uncivilized' accent. Eventually they pulled into the driveway of her new home and Esther leapt out excitedly.
"Esther! It's unladylike to leap out of the car in such a way." Petunia scolded.
Esther bite her tongue and gave the woman a smile, "I am so sorry, mummy. I was just so excited to meet my new Daddy and baby brother Dudley."
Petunia gave her a small smile, "Yes, it is an exciting day for you. Okay, I'll let it go this one time. From now on though, mind your manners. Is that understood?"
Esther nodded and waited impatiently for Petunia to open the trunk so she could take out her suitcase. Once she grabbed her belongings, she forced herself to remain at Petunia's pace as they walked to the house.
"Now, Vernon is still at work and won't be home until dinner. I will introduce you to Dudley as soon as I pay the sitter and send her on her way."
Esther nodded, disappointed at not being able to met her new father immediately but understanding that the man had to work to support Petunia and Dudley. Once inside, Petunia payed the sitter who left as soon as she was paid. The poor woman's shirt was splattered in baby food and her hair was a mess.
"Don't ask me to babysit your child again, I can't handle him." The woman said as she practically ran out the door.
Petunia clicked her tongue as soon as the woman left, "Honestly. The nerve of that woman. My Dudder's an angel."
Esther forced herself to continue smiling, "I am certain Dudley is perfect, mummy."
Petunia's eyes glimmered with pride, "He truly is! I'll bring him down and introduce you!"
She quickly rushed up the stairs and, after a few moments, came down holding a baby boy resembling a beach ball. Esther's eyes widened at the sight, the poor child was being fed too much and his diet needed to be corrected so he gained a more healthy weight. She decided she'd help Dudley as soon as she could without drawing suspicion, she had to wait at least a few weeks before she could kill the horrid woman.
She quickly schooled her expression into a happy smile, "Hello, Dudley! It's so nice to finally meet you."
Dudley stared at Esther intently before slapping his mother's arms and making grabby hands towards Esther.
Petunia smiled, "He likes you! Why don't you sit down and I'll put Dudley on your lap?"
Esther nodded and gracefully sat onto the couch. Petunia placed Dudley into her lap and quickly raced to get her precious son some toys as well as a camera to get a picture of their first meeting. Once the moment had been captured, Petunia left the room once again to prepare dinner and Esther sat on the ground playing with Dudley. An hour passed as Petunia finished making dinner and called out to Esther.
"Esther, can you please set the table?" She asked.
"Of course, mummy." Esther replied as she got up.
The table was quickly set and dinner was placed onto the table. It was an enormous amount of food that was way more than what was necessary to feed a family of four, but Esther didn't ask why she had made so much. Petunia placed Dudley into his high chair and grabbed a small glass cup, filling it with some bourbon for her husband. Petunia stood by the door, waiting patiently for her husband to arrive home. Only a few minutes passed before the sound of a car pulling in was heard and Esther peeked past the doorway. She decided to remain hidden until her new father came into the kitchen so she could make a good impression. The front door opened to reveal a large, heavy man with a mustache. Esther's heart dropped as her dreams shattered, this was not the man Petunia had built up within her mind. Not even close.
"Here you are, Vernon." Petunia simpered as she handed him the glass of bourbon.
"Thank you, Pet. Now, where is the little tyke and our new daughter?" Vernon questioned as he gulped down his drink.
Esther pushed down her disappointment and went back to her seat, glancing at Dudley with a smile. She may not want Vernon anymore, but she was determined to take Dudley with her once she killed his parents. Those people didn't deserve a child, not like she did. She was introduced to Vernon and made a show of being impressed by her new father. Esther hid her disgust as she saw Vernon eating most of the food prepared for dinner and barely managed to hold down the food she did manage to eat. They made small talk and Petunia revealed that she had already prepared the perfect costume for Esther to wear tomorrow for Halloween. Eventually, she was allowed to go to bed and she entered her new bedroom which was decorated in a ridiculous amount of pink. As she lay in bed, she made plans to kill Vernon and Petunia within the next two weeks.
The next day passes rather uneventfully and she pretended to enjoy going trick or treating. She was relieve when the day was finally over with as she despised the princess costume Petunia had gotten her. At least the costume had allowed her to wear some ribbons to cover her scars, although she didn't enjoy the fact that they were bright pink. However, the next day began quite differently as she was woken up by Petunia's shrill shrieking. Vernon quickly hurried to his wife's side while Esther remained hidden, quietly watching the scene unfolding before her. Apparently a baby boy had been left on their doorstep alongside a letter. Petunia tore open the letter and skimmed through it, paling as she read it.
"What is it, pet?" Vernon asked.
"M-my sister and her husband were killed yesterday. This is their son, Harry, and we have to raise him." Petunia told him, lip trembling.
"What?! Why should we have to raise the little freak?! Shouldn't he be with his own kind?!" Vernon yelled.
"Shh! Vernon, quietly! Don't wake up the children."
"But pet! This is outrageous!"
"I know it is, but we have no choice! Apparently my sister sacrificed herself for her son and now he has some sort of blood protection. As long as he's with us, both us and the boy will be protected from that dark lord's followers."
Vernon trembled with rage, "Fine! But don't expect me to treat the little freak like my own. Unlike Esther, this boy needs the freakishness stomped out of him. I will not put up with m-m-magic!"
Petunia nodded and quickly shoved the basket containing her nephew Harry into the cupboard under the stairs, throwing the letter in with the boy.
"Don't let those freaks ruin you day, Vernon. Have a good day at work while I deal with this. Go and treat yourself to a nice breakfast at your favorite restaurant. You deserve it after the stressful morning you've had." Petunia told her husband.
"You're so good to me, pet." Vernon said as he kissed her before getting ready for work.
Petunia sneered at the closed door of the cupboard, ignoring the cries of her nephew. She gave a huff before going to the kitchen to prepare breakfast for the rest of her family. Esther quickly went downstairs and opened the cupboard. She took in the sight of young Harry and had to say that he was quite the pretty baby. Harry had raven black hair and beautiful emerald green eyes. The poor boy had a vivid red scar in the shape of a lightning bolt along his forehead and she hoped she'd be able to sneakily apply some medicine on it before it scarred. She grabbed the letter before closing the door once more, vowing to take care of him as his family obviously would give him only the bare minimum to keep the child alive. She needed to read the letter and create a new plan.
