Chapter 1: Don't Speak

Zaraki Kenpachi was, to say the least, not the most perceptive man…though rather than being a reflection on the eleventh division taicho's intelligence, it was more a sign of his stubborn refusal to attend to certain things, one of them being proper behavior in taichos meetings. Still, despite that undeniable fact, even the man that most people referred to as a barbarian, could see that something was not right with Kuchiki Byakuya during the taichos meeting that morning.

The noble stood quietly enough as their captain commander addressed the group, but he could feel the occasional flickers of disturbed reiatsu that wafted across the room and the noble's dark eyes looked at the floor as though he meant to cut a hole into it with his glare alone.

He might just be able to do it too.

What's wrong, princess? You get up on the wrong side of the mansion again?

He continued stealing occasional glances at his comrade as the wore on, ignoring most of whatever was being said. He was relatively sure that Kyoraku knew he wouldn't remember anyway, so if it was that important, he would be pulled aside and talked to directly. It was normally his habit to escape the meeting room as soon as possible after taichos meetings, but this time, he held back slightly, pretending to be studying the hilt of his sword. He waited until the noble had finished a short conversation with Toshiro, then as Byakuya walked out of the room and headed through the hallway, he followed.

The noble left the first division, but instead of taking the direct path back to his division, he instead headed between two buildings to a more quiet pathway that took them past a small park. Byakuya paused to stand at the side of one of two koi ponds and he gazed down into the water, still wearing that unhappy, agitated look. Kenpachi made a little sound of surprise and stepped back slightly as the air beside the noble seemed to shimmer for a moment, then another pretty, pale skinned man appeared.

His bodyguard and healer.

That sweet little cupcake, Tetsuya. Sweet, but with a respectable sword and ability. Too bad Byakuya won't let me fight either one of them…

"Byakuya-sama," Tetsuya said, looking up slightly to meet his cousin's troubled eyes, "is there anything I can do?"

The Kuchiki leader sighed and removed a handful of koi food from within his clothes. He let it fall slowly from his hand as he answered.

"I do not think there is anything that anyone can do. The elders have given their decision. Whatever our feelings on the matter are…we must obey their order."

He turned to face Tetsuya and took his cousin's hands in his.

"I am sorry that it has come to this. The last thing I want is…"

"I know," the younger Kuchiki assured him, "It will be all right. I promise you it will. Please try to have faith. At very least, I am someone you know."

"I wonder if that only makes it more difficult," Byakuya said, looking into the water at their reflection, "At least, with a stranger, I would not know exactly how all of this would affect the one enduring it with me."

"Don't worry about me," Tetsuya urged him, "I will be fine, because it's you. I know that you would never hurt me."

"But…I will."

"No. I told you when you rescued me that I would do anything for you. I will do this happily, and I want you to be happy too. You at least don't have to be married, and I will not leave your side. I will protect you and the heir with my life."

Byakuya huffed out a disgusted breath.

"The heir, Tetsuya?" he said, an edge of anger in his voice, "Not our child?"

"The rules of…"

"I don't care about the rules!" Byakuya snapped, "This is wrong and you and I and the elders all know it. We should be allowed to choose our path, and if you bear a child, you should get to be called that child's parent!"

Tetsuya looked back at him sadly for a moment, then he bowed respectfully.

"I feel as you do, but it seems that there is no choice, so please don't let it upset you. I will meet you back at Kuchiki Manor after your mission today. By then, we should both be affected and we can see to this obligation together."

Byakuya looked as though he wanted to argue, but he nodded briefly and sighed again, turning his attention back to the koi pond as Tetsuya faded from view and a flash step sounded. Kenpachi waited until Byakuya was alone, then he sauntered out from behind the brush, whistling absently. He stopped whistling after a moment and looked at the noble, who seemed not to notice him at all.

"Hey, Byakuya."

Byakuya blinked, as though to clear his thoughts, then he turned and glared softly at the disturber of his peace.

"What do you want, Kenpachi?" he asked quietly, "Were you eavesdropping there while I was speaking to Tetsuya?"

"Huh?" the bigger man grunted, looking around, "Is that little cupcake around here somewhere?"

"Tetsuya had duties to attend to," the noble said stiffly.

"What? You mean he had more to do than put band-aids on your boo-boos and wipe your pansy ass for you?"

Byakuya bristled.

"Do you have a reason for being here, other than trying to start a fight with me?" he asked, glowering.

"Can I fight your pretty cousin?" Zaraki chuckled, smirking, "I hear he's deadly with that cute little sword of his."

Before either man quite knew what happened, Byakuya had pinned the bigger man against a tree with Senbonzakura blazing pink and pressed warningly against Zaraki's throat.

"Insult Tetsuya again with that foul mouth of yours and I will fill it with bladed petals! I'll rip out your vocal chords so you can't befoul his name anymore!"

"Easy there, princess," Zaraki drawled casually, as though he couldn't possibly be an inch from having his blood spilled all over the park trail, "I'm not disrespectin' your cousin. I wouldn't offer to fight him if I didn't think he was strong enough to stand up to me. Why don't you tell me, what's got your petals a-twirling? Did someone insult Tetsuya? I'll be happy to go rearrange their guts for you, if they're worth the trouble."

"I do not need you to solve my problems," the noble sneered.

"So, someone did insult Tetsuya," Kenpachi concluded.

"Why are you still lurking around here, minding everyone's business but your own?"

"Just the usual, looking for a worthy fighter to cross swords with."

"Well, you would do well to look elsewhere," Byakuya said, closing his eyes for a moment, then refocusing on the koi pond, "Tetsuya and I have no interest in brawling with you."

The Kuchiki leader turned and began to walk away.

"Hey, wait up," Kenpachi called out, hurrying to catch up, "Where're you goin now?"

"That is not your business," Byakuya said coldly.

"Oh right, Sotaicho is sending you on that little goose chase to Hueco Mundo, right?"

"You mean you were actually paying attention when he was talking," said the noble, "I am shocked."

"You look it," Kenpachi chuckled, observing Byakuya's perfectly neutral expression, "Sounds to me like someone wants to get away."

"You have no idea what I would be thinking."

"Sure I would," Kenpachi drawled, "Pretty, high-class guy like you…nice house, everyone does what you tell'em to. Well, except those stuck up old farts always telling you what to do."

Byakuya paused as he reached the central senkaimon, where Renji awaited him.

"Hi taicho," he greeted the noble, "Hello Zaraki taicho."

"Piss off, Abarai. Go to the club and take the afternoon off."

"He most certainly will not!" Byakuya snapped, "My adjutant is assigned to accompany me…"

"Well, now I'm goin' with you. You're just supposed to take another officer. Doesn't have to be Renji."

"I…" Renji began.

"Shut up, Renji," Zaraki said off-handedly, "Isn't there someone having a bachelor party somewhere today?"

"W-well, uh…"

"Is that true, Renji?" Byakuya asked.

"Well um, yeah, but…"

"Why didn't you tell me sooner?"

"Let'im go to the party," Kenpachi suggested, "I'll go with you."

"Oh, you don't have to do that, Zara…"

"Get outta here, fukutaicho!"

"Yessir!" the redhead yelped as he turned and flash stepped away.

Byakuya raised an eyebrow and nodded in the direction of the senkaimon.

"Are you actually coming along, or is it your intention to have me defy the captain commander's order and go alone?" the noble asked haughtily.

"And miss out on a chance to find a good hollow to fight in Hueco Mundo?" the eleventh division taicho laughed, "No way."

He stepped into the corridor, watching as Byakuya followed him inside and the doorway closed behind them.

"Do try to remember that I have an assigned mission in Hueco Mundo."

"Yeah," Kenpachi said, smirking, "you take care of that while I find something to fight."

"You're ridiculous."

The bigger man eyed him skeptically for a moment.

"This from a guy who lets a bunch of old men tell him how to live his life…who he will and won't put his dick in…who can wear his name?"

"That's enough!" Byakuya hissed, stopping and laying a hand on his sword, "You were eavesdropping earlier, weren't you? You heard that the elders are forcing me to have a child with my cousin!"

"Yeah, and that the cousin is your pretty guy cousin, Tetsuya. How does that work anyway?"

"Someone like you doesn't need to know such things."

"I do if I don't want to get your pretty noble ass pregnant while we're out there alone in the desert."

"As if a barbarian like you could even understand the role of breeder males in our history."

"Breeder males, huh?" Kenpachi mused, "Are you one of those too?"

"That is…"

"None of my business. Fine."

Byakuya gave a sigh of relief as they reached the senkaimon exit and dropped down into the underground training room beneath Urahara Kisuke's shop. The shopkeeper grinned and tipped his hat as the two taichos arrived.

"Well, gentlemen, welcome to the shop. Hey Byakuya-bo, I thought you said it would be you and the moocher today."

Byakuya gave Kenpachi a sideways glance.

"The plans have changed. Zaraki taicho will be assisting me in investigating the rumors of quincy activity in the area near the old palace ruins."

"Which is your way of saying that you'll be investigating the ruins while Zaraki taicho goes searching for someone to fight. You want me to call Ichigo to go along with you?"

Byakuya sighed.

"No, I just want to get this mission over with. I must return to the manor by nightfall to…"

Byakuya paused, giving Kenpachi an icy glare as he added, "…to see to some family obligations."

"Oh, is that what they're calling it now?" the barbarian taicho snorted.

"Shut up."

"Now boys, try to get along," Kisuke snickered, standing back as the garganta opened in front of them, "You're going into the hollow world. There's gonna be a lot of stuff there wanting to kill you. You'll make it too easy for'em if you're fighting with each other."

Byakuya ignored him and entered the gaping hole that had opened up. He laid down a smooth reiatsu trail in front of them and began to run along the bright surface, heading for the designated exit point.

"You make a path as pretty as you are, princess," Kenpachi remarked as he ran along the perfectly crafted surface, "Smooth as a…"

"I think with your feral reiatsu and non-existent control, it is not hard to exceed your expectations."

"That rough reiatsu comes in handy kicking asses when I need to."

"I can see how it would serve the needs of a brawler like you."

"Look Byakuya, can we just call a truce here? You're being a pain in the ass."

"Well, I did not ask you to accompany me."

"You didn't exactly argue with Renji about me coming with you either, which means you're on the fence about it. What? Are you expecting trouble?"

"Not any more than usual, and I was simply being courteous in letting Abarai go to his friend's bachelor party."

Kenpachi snickered.

"He ain't going to no friend's party."

Byakuya's frown deepened and he paused on the pathway, making Kenpachi stop as well."

"What do you mean? You asked if…"

"I said, Isn't someone having a bachelor party somewhere? That's friend-code for, Get outta here. I got this."

The noble stiffened and made a sound of disgust.

I don't know why it surprises me at all that you would stoop to such a diversion, but that you dragged my adjutant…"

"Renji," Zaraki supplied, "Yeah, I gave Renji a night off. The kid works hard for you. You've complimented him yourself. Does it really bother you that much that I'm here and he's not? Who do you want with you if you're facing someone with real power? Those ruins are notorious for attracting some of the nastiest hollows."

"And some of the nastiest shinigamis as well," the noble said dryly.

"And I thought you didn't have a sense of humor. Color me impressed."

"I doubt it would be hard to impress you."

"Let me tell you…"

He broke off as Byakuya slowed and indicated the exit point ahead of them.

"There."

The two passed through and dropped down onto the sandy surface and Byakuya pointed out the looming shape of the ancient palace in the distance.

"Hmph," Kenpachi huffed, "Kisuke couldn't put us any closer to it than this?"

Byakuya shook his head firmly.

"The trails into the area from the other directions are filled with too many dangerous, transformative hollows. That is why we have to enter here and walk a little farther to reach it."

Kenpachi's hand rose to fend off the rising wind and more than a little sand it kicked up as it gusted.

"You check the weather before we left?"

Byakuya nodded.

"It was supposed to be clear tonight."

He extended his senses, then gave his companion a look of alarm.

"We need to go back!" he snapped, turning towards the place where the garganta had just closed.

"Why? What's the problem?" Kenpachi chuckled, "You afraid of a little wind?"

"This isn't natural, you fool!" the noble shouted over the rising howl of the wind, "It's being caused by a leviathan hollow!

"A leviathan's a sea monster."

"Normally, yes," Byakuya shouted, "But this is the sand hollow equivalent, named for its distinctive look and the way it moves through the sand until it surges up and leaps out, then it crashes down again, spewing sand in all directions and making the storm. If it…"

Whatever Byakuya had been planning to say was drowned out by a ground shattering roar as the huge, hulking body of the leviathan reared up ahead of them. Kenpachi laughed and drew his weapon.

"Now, here's a guy I wanna fight!"

"Are you insane?" Byakuya cried, "We have to get out of here…find a place to take cover. The leviathan hollow creates titanic sandstorms that will take your eyes out with the force of the sand it sends flying at you!"

"Yeah," the bigger man said, stepping back slightly and looking down at his stinging hand and arm, "that is pretty fuckin' annoying. Can't have a good fight in that. Okay, where do you wanna go?"

"I saw a cave over there. We can take cover until the storm passes, then we can use stealth to exit the area."

"Or I can kick the shit outta that windy bastard and he won't bother us anymore."

"I don't believe I got myself into this," Byakuya sighed, leading his comrade towards the cave he had seen.

The two pulled their cloaks tightly around their bodies, bowing their heads against the shrill wind and driving sand. For several minutes, Byakuya worried that they might have simply missed the cave entrance, but finally, a tall shape rose up in the darkness and the two managed to find their way into the cave, using their extended hands. Once inside, Byakuya swiftly constructed a protective barrier and infused a large rock with reiatsu to heat it up.

"You're good at that," Kenpachi complimented him, spitting out a mouthful of sand and coughing several times, "I just blow the fuckers up if I try to do that."

"Why does that not surprise me?" Byakuya huffed, shaking his head and using his fingers to dislodge the sand that had gotten entangled in his hair.

The two officer went silent for a time, listening to the howl of the wind and the occasional roars of the meandering leviathan. Minutes stretched into several hours, and as the time passed, Kenpachi noticed his companion seemed to shift around, growing more restless. A light sweat broke out on his skin and Byakuya quivered and shrank more deeply into his protective cloak.

"Heya, you all right, Kuchiki?" Kenpachi asked, "You didn't get bitten by a hollow vamp or one of those creepy spirit wolves?"

"No," Byakuya answered, keeping his face hidden inside his hood as he answered, "I am…fine."

"Bullshit," the bigger man countered, "You're shaking and your face was looking flushed before you covered it. What's wrong?"

The noble paused, loathe to admit the truth, but as the next hour passed and he felt his loins begin to ache, he bit his lips in frustration, fighting the rising sensations for as long as he could.

"Those old fuckfaces did something to you, didn't they?" Kenpachi growled, "Didn't Tetsuya say something about being affected? What're you being affected by? Is this cause you were supposed to be back home making a baby?"

"Ugh! Just leave me alone!" Byakuya panted, clenching his teeth and cringing as the sensations grew to a level that felt unbearable."

"You look like you're about ready to jump outta your skin," the other taicho observed.

Oh gods, he actually sounds worried.

"Hey, Byakuya," Kenpachi said, laying a hand on the noble's forearm, "is there anything I can do to help you…"

But the rest of what he'd been ready to say disappeared as Byakuya leapt out of the crouch he'd been in and tackled his comrade, taking him to the floor and drowning out any more words with a hard, biting kiss that left a coppery tinge in their mouths. The sweet taste of the noble's hungry mouth and the heavy press of that lithe, slender body pressing up against his stole away any resistance as a kind of haze fell over the two.

This is definitely not what the elders had in mind, Byakuya thought as their hands began to tear each other's clothes away.

It serves them right.
