Chapter fifty

Who ever said we need to prepare for the future is full of crap. You can prepare all you want but there's always going to be mistakes or accidents. Never had I ever attended a party growing up that didn't have a kink in it. Also never have I met a person that didn't have a scar on their heart. So prepare, prepare, prepare can only get you so far. What you really need is to be able to adapt.

"I think I'm gonna like this chair," I leaned my head back against the plush headrest. My fingers tapped away on the armrests a rhythm I didn't know the end to.

I heard him chuckle before my eyes caught sight of his red hair in the doorway. "That's good, because I have no doubt you will be using it a lot."

Smiling, I rested my hands on top of my growing stomach. "True."

"Are we planning on doing the hospital bag today?" Kurama asked. "We could mark that off our list here." He walked over to the list on the wall in the corner. I watched his finger trail over several lines on the paper.

"Yeah we could do that," I nodded and took a deep breath. "As long as I don't have to move."

He glanced at me with humor in his eyes. "That's fine. You just tell me what needs to go inside."

Bobbing my head slightly, "Well you need a bag."

"'Kay boss," he chuckled giving me a slight salute and walking out of the room. I giggled and picked my phone up from my lap. Flipping through my web browsers, I found the baby center website. "Bag- check."

When I looked up to see his green eyes on me, I couldn't help but grant him a small smile. "Great. So it says that we need a coming home outfit."

"Do you have a preference?" Kurama asked as he moved to the dresser across from the crib. The room looked so much bigger without my bed in it anymore. The wood crib stood against the wall my bed used to be against and now my book shelf held children's stories instead of my classic literature and adult romance novels.

"Not really," I shook my head, feeling the loose blue strands glide against my neck. "They'll all get used in the end."

He nodded to himself and opened several drawers before finding the right one. I couldn't help but smile at how big his hands looked with the tiny outfit in his hands. The blue stripes contrasted his hair and it was a sight I wish I took a picture of, but as soon as I thought it he had set the outfit in the bag. "Next?"

"We need a couple of the small blankets for the drive home for the little guy?" I scrolled through the list.

"Did you want the giraffe one or the 'I love mommy' blanket?" Kurama asked shutting the drawers in the dresser.

I gnawed lightly on my lip as I thought about my answer. "Well it's supposed to be July, so let's go with the giraffe one because it's thinner."

Watching him pack the bag for the hospital was warming my heart and I didn't know how much longer I'd be able to keep my feelings to myself. It was like they were sitting in my throat ready to jump out and I was failing at controlling them.

"Check," he nodded in accomplishment. Raising his head to gaze at me, I saw the excitement in his eyes.

"And we have the car seat," I looked back down at my phone, scrolling through the list. "Looks like that's it for him. Now it's my turn." Scooting to the edge of the seat, I pushed my body up, belly first.

I could feel my knees shake slightly as my heart beat picked up. He smiled at me with the duffle bag in hand. I knew I was going to tell him. There was no more holding back my thoughts. I wanted him to know what he was doing to me.

"Let's go to our room then?" Kurama asked. After reaching him at the door, I placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Wait," I said quietly and I felt his free hand come to sit on my hip. Pushing up on my tip toes, I kissed his surprised lips. "Kurama, there's something I want to tell you." I only leaned back enough to allow my lips to move smoothly. My eyes darted up to meet his questioning green gaze. Licking my lips briefly, I softly spoke, "I love you."

Taking a deep breath, I waited a few seconds to only be met with silence. Slowly I let my eye lids shut. This was almost a nightmare but part of me didn't care.

"I love you, Kurama," I said the words again.

"Botan," he whispered and took a step back. "I…" his words escaped him for once.

Taking a deep breath, I summoned the rest of my courage. "It's ok, Kurama. I don't want to pressure you into saying it back. Really, it's alright." I could feel my muscles slump slightly. "Sure it would have been great to hear those words from you too, but if you are unsure then don't say it."

"Botan," Kurama swallowed hard before raising his free hand away from my hip and into his hair. "This is… I just need to think. The last time I said those words, they came back to destroy me."

"I understand that," I nodded limply. "When you're ready, I'd love to hear them. But don't push yourself. I'm not going anywhere." He smiled then at me and I couldn't help but return it. "Just as long as I can say it freely to you."

"I wouldn't make you hide your feelings," Kurama lowered his hand to cup my face. He brought his lips down to give me a soft kiss before leaning his forehead against mine. "I do enjoy hearing those words. I just need to evaluate something's inside me."

"I'm sorry if this was sooner than you had planned," I whispered and closed my eyes trying not to let the hurt in. He didn't break my heart but he didn't return the favor. I had such mixed emotions bubbling inside me.

"Don't ever be sorry Botan," Kurama then leaned back enough to kiss my forehead. "Come on. Let's go finish packing."
