The Lost Son

The doors burst open as James Potter and his wife Lily Potter nee' Evans rushed into the medical ward at Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The two of them were frantic as word had come to them while they were out that their house had been attacked by the Dark Lord Voldemort! When the message came of the attack and their children were at Hogwarts the two of them had rushed to the school frantically.
The pair of half crazed with concern parents stopped as the Headmaster Albus Percival Brian Dumbledore stood in the middle of the room. At his side Madam Pomfrey, the head nurse of the Hospital Ward, stood silently her face filled with concern. James could feel his heart clench tightly at the sight of the grave faces of his timeless friends. "What happened?"
"It is as we feared James and Lily. The Dark Lord moved to attack your house, it seemed that he knew that you were not home and only Lily's mother was there. I have notified the Aurors to hunt down Sirius Black as the wards could only fall if he gave up the secret." The elderly voice of the wise Headmaster spoke softly with a deep sadness in his tone.
James shook his head with a frown as he walked over to the bedside of his oldest son. Harry was extremely pale and passed out on the bed asleep either magically or normally. But, the important part was the slow rise and fall of his three year old son. "Sirius wasn't the secret keeper Albus. The secret keeper was Peter. We figured nobody would suspect him. What happened tonight though?"
"Where is my mother?" Lily spoke up standing at the bedside of their one year old boy lily Charlus Potter named after James' father. The little boy too had the rise and fall of his chest, he looked to be in good health except a vivid lightning bolt scar on his forehead.
"I fear that she is no longer with us Lily." Albus stated kindly to the young woman, his eyes losing their normal twinkle.
The young woman let out a gasp at the statement crumbling into a chair as her head lowered down tears spilling out at once. Her breathing became ragged with concern over her mother's passing.
James walked to her side and wrapped his arms around her tightly pulling the auburn haired distraught woman into his chest. His hand gently rubbed against the small of her back. His concern for his wife was interrupted by the Headmaster continuing, "It seems that the Dark Lord broke into your home and killed Ms. Evans. From there he went upstairs, as we feared he might due to the prophecy."
The ancient man stepped to the bedside of little Charlus watching the boy with sadness from all appearances. But, if one looked closely there was a calculating look on the old man's face as he studied the boy. "He turned his wand on little Charlus. But, when he cast the killing curse it rebounded back from the child back onto himself. The Dark Lord's body was destroyed by the rebounding spell leaving only a set of black robes. Lily, did you do something to little Charlus' room?"
The distraught woman looked up from her tears. Her beautiful normally fiery green eyes lacked the burning hope and life that normally made them beautiful. Instead they were red with raw emotion. She gasped again as the she stifled back her tears before speaking, "I used an ancient family magic ritual that works for Potters only. It tied a sacrifice needed to it to repel the spell. I figured if he ever attacked I would be there and I would…"
The young woman fell back into her misery and tears as the emotion of her mother's death took over her again. James held her close giving her a squeeze gently.
Albus broke his gaze from the one year old boy to look instead towards the bed with young Harry. A grimace spread over his lips before he spoke up, "Your mother was found just outside of the room of young Charlus. She died trying to reach him and get out of the room. Harry was found unconscious inside of the room lying between the crib and the robes of the Dark Lord. I fear I have other horrible news."
The raw tormented gaze of Lily slowly rose up to the ancient Headmaster at the same time as James joined his wife with concern latching onto the Headmaster like a lifeline. The ancient man felt bitter on the poor news he was giving the couple. They were close as family, children he had seen growing up, great grandchildren of a friend of his in his youth. The Potters were always the Leaders of the Light. He broke his gaze away from the pair to look back to the bed that contained little Harry. Albus wet his lips before he spoke, "Little Harry was the sacrifice that the ritual required. I fear the young man has lost his memories, and most of his magic. He will most likely remain a squib for the rest of his life."
The room fell silent as only the sobbing gasps of Lily lingered in it. James too had lowered his head in pain at the loss of not only family but of his heir, his son, his flesh and blood.

James looked up from his goblet of fire whiskey. His voice was raw and he was truly drunk. He stared across the desk in Potter Manor at his best friend, his cousin and the closest thing he had to a brother. He had just finished telling the tale of what happened that terrible night three days ago. He stared now at his best friend, waiting and hoping he wasn't certain what for. What can someone say to a terrible tale of loss like that? What he didn't expect was the words that came from the very sober Sirius Black.
"Where is Harry now?" Sirius demanded. His tone was harsh, not filled with expected sadness. Sirius was staring at his brother with a darkness filling his eyes as he was suspicious that he had not seen the boy when he showed up.
"We thought since he would not become a magical and didn't remember the magical world it would be best to place him somewhere he could live a happy life." James spoke softly staring down at is goblet of fire whiskey.
He missed the fire that started to fill the eyes of the Black Heir as realization was starting to hit him. The voice was soft but cold as a artic burst as he spoke, "James Charlus Potter, where is my godson?"
"We placed him with the Dursley family so he could live with non-magicals Sirius. We gave him a life that he couldn't have if he stayed here." James continued to stare at his mug. He never saw the spell till the red light hit him. The Lord of House Potter was Flung from his chair the stunning spell hit him so hard that he was flung from it and through the window behind him. A scream of surprise came from the other room as James was tossed out of the window of his own manor.
The door of the office burst open with Lily rushing into the room with Wand ready for a fight. She saw the window then Sirius standing there wand drawn in a rage. A look of surprise crossed her face but only for a moment as a trio of red stunners slammed into her throwing her too from the room into the wall across the hallway.
Sirius jumped out of the window to land onto the glass filled grass. He walked forward with expensive dragonhide boots crunching down onto the blades as he stepped over to the cut and stunned man. The man that had considered him family, a brother, named him the godson of his firstborn son. The Black Heir knelt down next to the man and undid the stunning spell with a silent enervate. Immediately as James started to blink awake a fist slammed into his face breaking his nose and knocking him out.
A grimace touched the face of Sirius as he pulled out a broken piece of tooth and tossed it to the ground. "Damn it James. Why are you so stupid?"
The flicked his wand and levitated the Lord of House Potter back into the household. He placed his friend onto the couch in the room before sitting down at the desk. Quickly he pulled out a parchment and started to write. He never expected to use this knowledge but at the moment he was glad that his family had trained him. He had been trained since birth to become the Lord of the Ancient and Noble House of Black. He had fled that life when it became too dark, moving instead to live with his Aunt Dorea Potter nee' Black and his cousin James Potter but now that knowledge was useful.
Sirius was careful, clear and precise as he wrote up the contract. When it was done, he carefully looked it over before he placed it down. Again the Black heir levitated up his best friend into the chair of the Lord of House Potter. He placed pulled out the dark blood colored quill from the drawer and placed it down before James.
For a long moment Sirius stared at his best friend. He knew what he had done and what Sirius had now done most likely had ruined that friendship. What he was going to demand of James would be something that the man may even hate him for. But, Harry was his godson. It was the proudest moment of his life when he had been named in charge of the little guy. The fact that his first word was padfoot not Daddy or Mummy engraved in the heart of the man that this was right. He would do this for the boy, he would protect him even from the foolishness of his parents. He never questioned why James and Lily decided what they did. It was common for the Ancient families to react that way with a child that didn't have magic. Hell the Blacks had one or two squibs that had been ushered out of the family to a different life as well. This was different though, this was Harry. This was his godson!
His decision made Sirius flicked his wrist and enervated his best friend. He expected the man had a concussion or at least a major headache from the blow to the head. But, the sod deserved it! As James started to come around Sirius spoke up, "James, we have a disagreement about Harry to settle."
James blinked and looked around the broken room, the shattered door and his wife lying unconscious still on the ground. He started to stand up feeling the crunch of glass and reached for his wand. It was then that he noticed that there was no wand available to him, it was sitting in Sirius' free man. His best friend was holding him currently at wand point. It was then that he realized what Sirius had done. The Potter anger flashed into his dark eyes at the man. How dare he attack him in his own Home! He opened his mouth to tell his cousin to get out but found nothing would come out.
The silencing spell was a simple one to do on James. Sirius spoke up with a frown, "Sit down and shut up and listen. You owe me a debt James Charlus Potter. I jumped the way of you and took a dark curse that made me sterile of children. I knew what it meant but I knew what children meant to you and Lily. I call in that debt now. I gave up my only chance for children and you are giving up your own son. I demand by right Harry."
The eyes of James grew wide as he stared at his best friend in surprise. He blinked twice as he looked at padfoot before he spoke up, "Sirius, he is a squib Albus said so. This is for the best for him. If he grows up outside of magic he will have the chance at a happy life he will never have here. He doesn't even remember any of us because of that night!"
"I demand this James Charlus Potter. I demand my godson. Give me this and I will never trouble you again. Give me this chance to raise a son of my own, a chance to make him a good man. I will find a way to fix whatever was done to him. The Blacks always have a way." The pale grey eyes of the man flashed as his strong serious tone filled his request. He hissed out the final part of the statement, "Give this to me or I will make certain that everyone in the world knows that the House of Potter has grown a squib. You have your boy-who-lived as they call him. Give me Harry. He deserves a loving parent."
James reacted from the final words as if he had been slapped. But the fiery temper filled him up after the insult and attempted blackmail from his former best friend. Perhaps it was anger; perhaps it was guilt at what he had done. Whatever it was James Potter reached for the quill and signed it before engraving the Potter Lord's Ring seal onto the document. James looked up and met the gaze of Sirius his voice practically dripping with anger, "Here is your demand Sirius Black. You have attacked my wife, attacked my person, and blackmailed me all for this document. Be gone from here. You are no longer welcome here. You are no longer friend of House Potter."
Sirius could feel the wards reacting around him, revoking his permission to be in the estate that was where he practically grew up. He took the scroll and met the gaze of James. "Goodbye Prongs. You will come to regret what you did to Harry."
A crack and burst of light filled the room as Sirius was physically flung from the House and ward system. When the light faded James walked over to his unconscious wife debating if he should tell her of what took place. He knelt down to wake her and let out a sigh. In a few times he lost his son and now his best friend. He couldn't help but wonder if he had a made a huge mistake.
Author Note: Like or dislike? I know a lot folks do the twins or brother Harry that is forgotten or tossed with the Dursley family. I never understood how Sirius could allow it. I know the Azkaban really messed him up mentally. But, the way he seemed to love Harry as a son made me wonder what he would do. This story would feature a Harry raised a black. He is kicked out of House Potter, but through House Black regains his magic. He is the adopted son of Sirius Black. Let me know your thoughts all.
