I stared at the girl on the other side of the table.
The orange-eyed girl stared back at me.
This lasted about a minute.
Finally, I decided to break the ice.
"Um, hi?"
"Hello," was her reply.
I remember going to sleep last night, wondering what tomorrow would be like. I'd crawled into my bed, closed my eyes, and allowed consciousness to drift away. When I woke up, I found myself in a blank white room, with the only exit leading to another white room with a table in, and on that table was a bell, which I ended up wringing out of boredom.
Moments later, a girl in an impossibly fancy black dress had walked into the room, whistling some tune I didn't recognize, and taken a seat opposite to me.
And that brings me to where I am now.
"...Sorry, but, well, who are you?"
The girl seemed to chuckle at that. "Oh, now that is a question. You want my name, but that's a secret for now. As for what you can call me, well, there are plenty of options there. A god, a demon, a nuisance, a Random Omnipotent Being -"
Oh fuck...
"- but right now, the most appropriate title would be...Jump Chan."
...What?
"Jump Chan?" I inquired. "You mean like a...jump chain?"
"Give the man a prize."
Okay, so this was not the worst possible scenario I could be in. Generally speaking, Random Omnipotent Beings were complete and utter bastards, such that the alternate name for them was Random Omnipotent Bastard Beings. They kidnapped people to throw into other universes just so that they could watch those sorry souls squirm. With jumpchains, though, things were different - a ROB managing a jumpchain were rather benevolent, for lack of better term, and actually let you choose what troubles you would have to face, while also letting you get a few perks to make the pain easier.
"I'm guessing I don't need to explain what happens next, right?"
"I choose a jump, fill it out with backstory, perks, items, and drawbacks, spend ten years in the world I chose, and if I don't die I can choose a new jump?"
"Yep. Guess you had a lot of spare time on your hands before I picked you up."
I stared blankly at Jump-Chan. "What is that supposed mean?'
Her smile seemed to grow. "Only someone with considerable time to slack off would be that familiar with the rules of this system."
I threw a glare at her, not that I expected it to do anything to her. "Very funny."
"So, where do you want to jump first, my friend?"
My glare grew. "We aren't friends."
"I know. Still, my question remains."
I sighed. "Well, there are quite a few places I'd like to go. But there's one jump you can only take as a starter."*
"Hmm. So you want to be the very best?"
I chuckled. "Like no one ever was."
"At least you have some ambition, little one."
Another glare went her way, and once again she ignored it.
"If you are trying to intimidate me, you will fail. Every time."
Figures. "Is this the part where I start filling out a sheet?"
"Yes," replied Jump Chan, idly running a hand through her white hair...wait, it had orange, green, and purple tips?
Also, was that a die in her hand?
"..What's the die for?"
"You have to roll for where you go, and I don't want to wait too long for my entertainment. So take this and see what you get."
*one roll later*
...Guess I was gonna have to deal with Team Aqua and Team Magma.
"So you will oppose the idiots who haven't quite figured out that their plans to make more land and more water are climate catastrophes in their own right. How amusing. Now onto your starter-"
"TREECKO!"
That actually surprised her. "You want to start with Treecko?"
"Eh, don't want to stick out too much just yet."
She shrugged at that. "Fair enough. Though could you roll for age now?"
Another roll of the dice told me I would have my age cut back by ten years. Guess I was fourteen again.
"Guess you get to enjoy a second puberty. Neat."
"Can I get on with the items, perks, and drawbacks?"
"Getting impatient, are we?"
"...Yes, actually."
Maybe a minute later, I had everything for my jump filled out. Much to Jump Chan's surprise.
"So, let's see: Aura, Savant - which you get discounted since you want to just drop in, Combat Training - also at a discount, and blend in - also at a discount - are your perks, and you want to start with 50K Pokedollars, a Bicycle, a Medical Kit, and a Baton."
"Correct."
"And in order to afford some of that for this jump, you're willing to take on the swarmed and marked drawbacks."
"Eeyup."
"I see. Well, then, looks like you'r ready to be sent off."
"Don't throw me into the furnace the minute I land in the world of Pokémon."
Jump-Chan chuckled. "Maybe in another life, but there is a reason people like me are called benefactors. I'll only throw you into the flames if you choose to do so during a jump. Otherwise, expect some smooth sailing early on."
"Can I begin, then?"
"Yes. Oh, and good luck."
A moment later, I found my vision fading away. When it refocused, I found myself in a field, with a pokeball in front of me. A moment of fiddling later, I found myself staring at an adorable green gecko creature that was about the size of a baby.
...I could live with this.
