AN: who's ready for a good laugh
Chapter 26
Duncan's POV
Community Recreational Center
11:00am
Sighing heavily along with Trent " why did we get volunteered for this " I asked drinking coffee from my " worlds best dad " thermos mug given to me by Serenity for Christmas and if I didn't know any better Courtney purposely put my coffee in this to remind me of that.
" If I didn't I'm sleeping outside and I'm not in the mood to wake up a human popsicle " answers Trent crossing his arm " fair enough at least you weren't told to take care of your needs alone " I answered frowning remembering how fun that conversation was " ouch that sucks " replied Trent wincing " and did the first field trip had to be at the ice rink? " adds Trent as we currently stood in line with kids to get skates.
This field trip was going to be quite the day not only were myself and Trent forced to volunteer to do this but of all places for us to go with 12 kids, aside from Zoe other parents were volunteering with us as well but the worst part about this is were encouraged to participate which is a big problem because I don't freakin skate. I'd rather be riding a bike then do this.
Once all the kids got there skates on and geared up with helmets we headed to the rink.
" Okay everyone line up our skate instructor will be coming out " Zoe calls out to us " now remember we listen to what they tell us this is our first time skating and we want to have fun but also be safe " she adds smiling as the instructor comes out showing to be known other then Harold.
Getting amused I perked up a bit " Well I wasn't expecting this " I said trying not to laugh " me neither " Trent answered smiling.
Taking a deep breath followed by a heavy sigh " welcome kids my names Harold and I'm your instructor today follow me " said Harold leading us to the rink all the kids wobbled to the rink each of them was given a little plastic chair to use to support them " carefully make a line " said Zoe as she easily moved on the ice.
" Look daddy I'm on the ice " calls Serenity smiling using the chair to slowly move on the ice " good job " I said smiling seeing her having fun.
" Alright it doesn't seem that hard to do " said Trent watching the kids move " yeah let's go for it " I said stepping onto the ice but as I take a few steps I lose my balance and land hard right on my ass followed by an eruption of laughing by the kids.
I had to cover my mouth to yell how bad that hurt " Duncan are you okay? " asks Zoe coming towards me " yeah all good " I breathed attempting to get up only to fall back down again " oh man " I breathed knowing my ass is bruised.
Just then another hard landing was heard looking to see Trent fall forward landing on his stomach " ow " he said sliding towards me.
" Doesn't seem that hard eh? " I said looking at Trent " okay maybe not " he answers trying to get up only to fall down again " I hate this " he adds resting his face on the ice.
11:30am
After getting some help to stand on the ice and embarrassed to be given a chair to support ourselves.
Harold currently was leading the kids in groups of 4 in a beginners technique using the chair they took small steps forward. They were led in a circle in the rink that had cones set so that no one else entered.
" That's it kids take your time " said Harold watching the kids carefully " very good everyone " cheered Zoe smiling " okay it's the next groups turn " says Harold retuning to the rest of us.
Serenity and Louis were in the next group and we were asked to join them " god this is embarrassing " I thought to myself moving on the ice with a chair to support me " a grown ass man having to take skating lessons with 3 year olds " I said in my mind. This can't get worse.
" Hola everyone " said Alejandro as he pasts us skating like it was nothing on the ice " great " I sigh seeing him coming towards us " well well beginners are we " he asks skating beside us.
Gripping the chair tight I try to just focus " yup " I reply watching what Harold was instructing us to do " alright everyone and...step...step...glide " he says " be sure to hold onto your chair " Harold adds.
Watching the kids follow instructions was looking like it seemed to help and even though I may look stupid doing it I tried it " okay then " I said following along " this is never to be mentioned to Gwen " sighs Trent from behind me " deal and this doesn't get told to Courtney " I answered " my lips are sealed " said Trent.
" Hi guys " called out the two people we didn't want to see us in this embarrassing situation.
Looking to the side we see Courtney and Gwen walking into the bleachers waving at us. " So much for not telling " I sighed in embarrassment.
" Hi mommy " greets both Serenity and Louis continuing to skate slowly.
Courtney smiles at the kids " hey guys good job and you too Duncan " she says encouraging me " you too Trent nicely done " said Gwen waving at him.
Alright so maybe this isn't too embarrassing after all this is all in the name of fun and if Courtney doesn't see my current state as hilarious as I thought then I'm feeling pretty good about this.
Music started playing in the rink which started getting the kids excited. As we were about to clear our circle Alejandro zips past us, clearly wanting to show off I frown watching him.
" It's too bad that your a beginner " says Alejandro currently skating backwards " and what's that suppose to mean? " I asked facing him " oh nothing just it would of been fun to race each other...say from the coned area to the end of the rink " he explains smiling " that is unless you don't got the huevos to " he adds before skating away.
Hearing a crack I turn watching Alejandro " that bitch is gonna get it now " I said letting the chair go before balling my fists. Taking a breath I skate my way towards him...
Courtney's POV
11:30am
I really wanted to volunteer to go to the recreational center where Serenity's class was going for there field trip but now that my classes were full time I wasn't able to. I asked Duncan if he could volunteer instead he almost put up an argument about it but when I said " then have fun taking care of your needs " he went quiet.
Even today when he picked up Serenity I made sure to give him coffee in his " worlds best dad " thermos mug that was given to him for Christmas. I thanked him by promising him a home cooked dinner tomorrow night along with dessert which he asked " can't we just have dessert " only to get a smack on the shoulder.
I had some time to kill before my afternoon classes started. Upon arriving at the recreational center Gwen was also arriving she said that she also had some time to spare before her classes and wanted to see how the kids were doing.
We both went inside the ice rink to see Louis and Serenity currently following the skate instructor who surprisingly was Harold then again that performance when we played dodgeball on TDI he did mention he knew figure skating. Those were good times. We noticed both Duncan and Trent using chairs, I gotta admit it was a bit funny but I gave them credit for using them since they were beginners. Duncan was more of a bike guy so skating probably wasn't his strong point.
After greeting and encouraging them Gwen and I took a seat on the bleachers, good thing we both wore our jackets cause even inside the ice rink it was cold.
" They look so cute " I said watching them " yeah I remember we did this as kids " answered Gwen smiling " true, it was fun to do in the winter " I answered looking at Serenity enjoying herself but Duncan looked embarrassed.
Feeling concerned I hoped Duncan was alright doing this today the intention behind it was I'm hoping this helps him get comfortable show his nice side.
Keeping my eyes on the groups we noticed Alejandro skating like a pro clearly wanting to show off, " ugh is it me but does he like to annoy people or really get under there skin? " asks Gwen watching Alejandro move " I don't know but I'm suddenly getting a bad feeling " I answered looking at him with an eyebrow raised.
Music started playing getting everyone excited, as Harold was giving instructions to the kids I notice Duncan was slowly skating to where Alejandro was by the coned area meaning the kids weren't suppose to pass that point.
Standing up from the bleachers I try and see what's happening " what are they doing? " I asked myself...
Duncan's POV
I managed to keep my balance so that I could make my way to this prick.
Alejandro was really getting under my skin and nothing more would make me happy then to kick his ass.
" Alright lets get this over with " I said frowning at him " I just knew you couldn't resist a challenge " answered Alejandro smiling " whatever " I scoff trying to keep myself balanced " a little wobbly in the knees there hope your able to keep up...as I said a race from here to the end of rink where that goalie net is " he explains making circles around me.
I look at the end to indeed see a goalie net seems easy enough only difference I'm a newbie at skating and I can barely keep my balance but if I was able to outrun the cops I'm sure I can do it here and to hopefully shut Alejandro's big mouth " alright then...ready " he asks me in a starting position " steady " I said mimicking him " and whoever wins gets to kiss Courtney GO!!! ' he says fast before racing off " LIKE HELL!!!! " I yelled now boiling mad and somehow I suddenly forgot I was a newbie skater.
The grinding sound of our skates hitting the ice was all I could hear I was so determined now that my adrenaline was high. Catching up with this Jerk I swear I heard a crack on the last forced move, how dare he use Courtney as a prize for a selfish purpose, he's going down for this.
Looking behind him " Not bad " said Alejandro grinning " I guess a little motivation was necessary " he adds laughing before going faster " piece of shit " I growled but just as I was about to take another step I lost my balance making me wave my arms in fast circles I tried to stop but was unable to make myself go still.
I suddenly heard a loud whistle being been looking back fast Harold but as he approached me he bumps right into me now we're both moving fast on the ice unable to stop Alejandro looks back to see us coming in hot on his tail, panicking he wasn't able to get out of the way in time making us crash into him. We all hit the ground hard sliding fast on the ice followed by all three of us going into the goalie net hitting the wall hard.
We all groaned in pain unable to move for a moment, " red card for both of you " groaned Harold holding up a red card " is my face damaged? " asks Alejandro trying to get up " this bites at least it can't get any more embarrassing " I breath but then we see a siren light go off along with the hockey charge tune go off...
" CHARGE!!! " shouts the kids...
15 Minutes Later
After the ice rink staff help us all get up and check us for any serious injury, the kids continue with there lesson with a different instructor since Harold currently had a minor concussion. I ended up with a sore shoulder and a black eye then lastly Alejandro ended up with a sprained wrist, a black eye and a bruised leg. In someway Karma got him good.
I currently sat on the bleachers with Courtney while holding an ice pack on my eye " well this field trip got interesting " I said watching the kids skate before shifting my gaze at Courtney who looked upset " okay I messed up I shouldn't have done what I did especially in front of the kids and Serenity " I added turning to look down at the ground.
Exhaling heavily Courtney speaks " Duncan what were you thinking? " she asks concerned " I wanted you to do this for Serenity and have fun but also to show your a nice person " explains Courtney making me look up " I just want you to let others see that like how you show me ".
Taking the ice pack off my eye I understand what her intentions were " It's easy for me to let you see it babe but others not so much I get your trying to help me but I still need time before I let that side be seen " I answer " especially since right now I got this black eye " I laugh before putting the ice pack on it again making me cringe " it was quite the moment " said Courtney holding my hand allowing me to tighten my hold on her.
" Hey guys we're back " announced Gwen holding two cups in her hands " we brought back some hot chocolate...so much for skating being easy " said Trent holding two other cups " it's definitely a fun sport but it takes time to learn " replies Gwen handing Courtney a cup while Trent handed me one " true that " I said taking a sip " just take it easy okay I don't like seeing you get hurt " said Courtney sounding worried " yeah man that was quite the hit you took " replies Trent leaning against the rink wall " this is nothing I've had worse " I answer recalling other times I've been hurt during fights from my delinquent years.
Just then I see Alejandro limping his way towards us " well speak of the devil " says Gwen frowning at him along with myself and the others " what do you want? " I ask standing up " I come in peace and to apologize " he says wincing as sits down trying to avoid putting any pressure on his bruised leg " that's a first " said Trent before taking a sip of his drink " I know we haven't been on the same page on things or gotten along but I thought I would make peace especially for what occurred today " explains Alejandro placing an ice pack one his eye.
Raising an eyebrow at him I wasn't buying one word what this guy was saying " your a dick man " I reply " if you didn't have a black eye already I would of given you one myself after your stupid challenge " I add hearing both Gwen and Trent laugh " that I would of enjoyed seeing " says Trent while Gwen nodded in agreement " okay he's making peace with you can't you just accept his apology this time " said Courtney standing beside me. Taking a deep breath I look at Courtney then look back at Alejandro " fine I accept your apology " I answer crossing my arms over my chest " this time " I add glaring causing him to smile nervously.
12:30pm
A while later both Courtney and Gwen headed out to be back in time for there classes. After the morning of skating and getting injured we headed to the school bus that was taking us back to the school for lunch thank goodness cause I was starving.
" All in all this wasn't too bad I guess " I said walking while Serenity walked beside me " yeah " answers Trent with Louis in front of him " can we go skating again? " asks Serenity only to make me snort " not for a long time honey daddy is gonna need some recovery time " I answered not wanting to repeat what happened today " well at least it'll be a chill ride back " said Trent as we arrived to the awaiting bus.
Once the driver saw us coming he opened the door for us but when he tried to get the bus started it wouldn't turn on. A few more tries and nothing. Zoe rushes over to the driver looking worried " what's wrong? " she asks him " I don't know it was fine when we left the school " he answers attempting to start the bus again but it was still making the same sounds as before " oh no are we gonna need to wait for another one? " asks Zoe looking at the kids waiting to board the bus " I'm afraid so I'll radio the garage" answers the driver reaching for his radio.
I make my way to the front of the bus " hold that call " I said before stepping on the bumper followed by lifting the hood so that I can spot the problem " try starting it " I ask keeping my eyes on the engine and everything else to figure out what's going on. Spotting the issue it was the starter something was preventing it from allowing the bus to turn on. Quickly fixing it along with checking everything was okay " try it now " I said looking back at the driver and this time it turned on properly.
Closing the hood I jump down from the bumper followed by hearing some cheering from the kids, " lets say thank you to Serenity's daddy for fixing the bus everyone " said Zoe smiling " THANK YOU " they all said together I wasn't sure to be embarrassed or grateful for the ovation I was getting " no problem " I said scratching behind my neck.
While everyone got on the bus Serenity rushed over to me " daddy your so cool " she said hugging me " thanks honey " I reply picking her up as we go inside the bus " hey thanks again " says the driver smiling " your welcome " I answer making my way to an empty seat near the back " way to go Duncan " said Trent giving me a thumbs up " thanks " I replied sitting down just as the bus started moving.
I wasn't sure if I was ever going to get over certain issues I had but for my sake I hope so.
AN: I'm sorry if it took me awhile but I got another chapter posted. I felt my last chapters were a bit rushed but hopefully from here on in I'll be posting regularly. Hope all your holidays were good and 2023 is going well.
