Chapter 55: Trial Two - Part One
Mildred was feeling more confident the second time around, after all, If she could pass one trial, she could pass the second.. After all, How hard could it really be? That's what Mildred kept telling herself as she played with the hem of her sleeve, looking out over the Assembly that's formed.
"Welcome to our second Trial.. This time, one of our delightful candidates will not be going further.." Miss Cackle addressed the school, looking over at the candidates with a sorrowful expression. One of them wouldn't be moving on.. Mildred just needed to make sure that it wasn't her. "In a moment, the second Trial Will commence with a Spell Obstacle Course.. Miss Drill?"
Miss Drill came forward. "The Object is easy, All Five Candidates will be set on an obstacle course at the same time. They'll have to face off against various challenges, using their spells to help them reach the end.."
"Thank you, Miss Drill." Miss Cackle spoke as Miss Drill sat back down. "The Last one to finish.. Will not be continuing.." Unlike with the last Trial, It was Guaranteed someone would not be continuing.. That only made Mildred More Nervous.. "The Rules are simple.. Once it's started, you can not leave till four people have finished. No attempting to Sabotage your fellow competitors.. You are not allowed any help, such as taking books or your broom with you when you enter.. And Lastly, you must tackle each obstacle.. No skipping.." Gosh, there were more rules this time.. Mildred could practically feel the sweet dripping down her back. "In Ten Minutes, it will commence outside. Please head there now.."
With that, the Hall rapidly cleared.. Mildred just sat there in a trance. Numb to the panic and nervousness. She can not be the first one out! She'd like to become Head girl, even if that was slim, The closer she got the better! She couldn't be caught out on only the second trial.
"Mildred?" She looked up, Hecate stood in front of her, looking slightly worried, but upon seeing Mildred clearly panicking face, she sat down beside her. "You shouldn't worry."
"Why not..? I'm not good with spells.." Mildred confessed. She'd gotten better, but she was no Ethel..
"But you are creative with them. You're also very resourceful." Hecate admitted, shrugging slightly as she looked at Mildred with Hard yet understanding eyes. Mildred looked over at the now empty Hall.
Hecate had a Point.. She was Creative.. If they had to use their own knowledge of spells, then why shouldn't she be creative with it.. If it works, then where's the issue? Hecate had unknowingly given Mildred the answer to her prayers. Or maybe, she did know.
"You're right." Mildred started smiling, Hecate Fulling her confidence.
"Naturally." Hecate stood, looking at her Watch. She waved her hand, transporting the pair outside the school. What Mildred saw seemed to knock her back down a couple of Pegs. There were two bleacher stadiums pointing towards the gate of the school.
Heading out the gate, was five Paths, each with a different Colour on the floor. It reminded her a lot of the Wizard of Oz. Between each path, was a large Hedge, separating the contestants from each other. Almost like a one way Maze.
Mildred Sighed, feeling a hand come to rest on her shoulder. She looked back up to Hecate. "Good Luck, Mildred." It was so simple, but it filled Mildred with warmth. Hecate nodded to her before her hand slowly removed itself as she moved to join the other teachers.
Mildred slowly moved over to the starting line, Miss Drill ushering each of the girls into place. "Mildred, You're on Red."
Mildred did as told, standing on the red road, like a single to her endless demise. 'Follow the red brick road' and what will she find? The Wizard? A Wish of her own? Would she receive a heart, a brain or maybe even some courage? Whatever it was, she knew this Maze of tasks would test her, either spitting her out a sorry witch, or a winning victor.
"When the bell goes, you may run on in.. Good Luck girls.." Miss Drill smiled at each of them before leaving them to it. In the background, Mildred could hear the chants and songs of her school, drilling into her heart a sense of duty.
She could hear Miss Cackle speaking.. Probably some glorious speech.. Despite this.. Mildred could hear nothing but the beating of her own heart. That is until that bell rang, she didn't hesitate to run forward, Her legs taking her as far as the road would let her.
She spared a glance to the side, no longer seeing fellow participants, only viewing hedges in return. That is until she stopped before a tall, Brick wall. She places a hand on it. "Solid.." She whispered.. She noticed a sign hung to the Hedge reading; 'Solid as the day i was built.. Yet on the other side lies freedom..'
"So.. Do I go under..? Over…? Through it…? I could try flying?" Mildred rambled to herself, a whole world of spells, yet she didn't know what direction to take.. She tapped on the Bricks once more, confirming it was indeed solid..
Sudden realisation came to her.. She dared not try and dig under, she didn't know what far it went.. She could go over.. But if she tried to fly, she could end up going anywhere.. But one spell stuck to her brain…
"Horresco, Refugio, In Terram Exis!" She yelled out in Latin, holding out her hands to allow the blue lights to take hold of the Wall, it shrunk, inch by inch, till it looked to belong to a barbie doll.
She stepped over it like it was nothing, silently thanking Mr Rowan-Webb and all his current teachings.. She ran forward onto the next task at hand. Suddenly feeling a little better.
Latin: Horresco, refugio, in terram exis.
English: Shrink, Shrink, to the ground you go.
You know what I dislike about the worst witch? The Sashs. Mainly because they have no meaning. In the Books, they represent their Houses but they're never named or given a reason for them to have a house..
(Houses / Forms / Tudors / Groups Are very common in the UK, But they are not just there for fun, they have a purpose. They separate each year group into more manageable groups, On PSHE days you spend it completely with your House, On Sports day you compete against the other Houses, and anything else is usually against Houses of your own year. I was Form group Green for my year)
However, In the Worst witch, Those Houses don't do any of those.. You don't even see them lining up in their Houses, or such. In the Film they all wore the same uniform, so no reason there. The Original show has my favourite version of the sashs, having them be to show what year everyones in. But in the 2017 one, they show where their rooms were.. But that's about it.
It just feels Pointless, and that annoys me majorly! There was so much room to play around with it too.. (Side note, we also don't have any main characters/named characters in the 2017 show that wear Green. And that annoys me.)
