Two months later…
"Shadow are you sure you will be alright?" Sonic asked as he and Shadow stood outside of their one floor house.
"Sonic my love, I'll be fine. You just go and kick Eggmans butt then come home for a very nice victory reward." Shadow smirked a little seductively at his husband.
"Can't wait for that. Ok no going out by yourself remember. There has been an increase of vampires being attacked and I don't want to come back with you being one of them. I'll be back in a few days ok. Love you, bye." Sonic firmly said and kissed Shadow on his lips then dashed away to stop Eggmans latest world domination thing with his friends, a couple of cities away from his home.
Shadow smiled then re-entered his house, locking the door up for the night. It was only nine-thirty but it had been a very slow yet tiring day. Shadow had been constantly on his phone making calls on behalf of his father and right now all he wanted to do was to take a nice hot bath then go to bed. Unfortunately the world had other plans for him tonight.
"Oh now what?" Shadow growled as his phone went off, probably for the twelfth time this afternoon/evening.
"Hello, Shadow speaking, may I ask who's calling?" Shadow spoke in a forced friendly tone.
"Hello Master Shadow this is Detective Jones, is it possible if you could come down to the police station?" Detective Jones asked in a serious tone.
"Sure just give me a moment and I'll be there in a couple of minutes." Shadow replied with some level of concern.
They hung up on each other and Shadow sighed as he wont be having his hot bath and early night, well not the early night but he be damned if he wasn't going to get that bath tonight. Shadow walked into the kitchen and grabbed a disposable paper cup that could hold at least half a pint in. He opened his blood storage fridge and got out a bag. Shadow filled up his cup, clipped the bag and put it back in the fridge to have later before bed. He put the cup into the microwave and heated it to room temperature. When it was done he capped the lid then used his gift to teleport to the police station, appearing in the main waiting area by the receptions desk. It was very busy where Shadow had appeared and the queue at the desk was almost reaching the main entrance doors.
"Ah Master Shadow, please follow me." Detective Jones, a tallish tanned human with dark brown hair, green eyes and dressed in smart clothing, called over and motioned Shadow to follow.
"What's this all about detective?" Shadow asked as they walked through the station hallways and going through double doors.
"We have a possible lead on the group who are de-fanging your citizens. It's not for definite but we are required to follow up on all leads. There has already been a dozen more cases where vampires have been attacked within this month alone. Bringing the total to almost fifty victims." The detective explained as they made it to the investigation room.
"Yes I know, I have visited the victims personally and assured their families and partners that these people will be put to justice." Shadow said as he and the detective took a seat in the meeting room where three other officers were waiting for them.
"Welcome Master Casadonte` and now that you are here we can begin." A male human smiled at the royal vampire.
"Aren't we formal tonight. Just Shadow will do fine but in public I would advise you are formal when addressing me. Please continue officer Zack." Shadow gave a fangy smirk then listened to what the human mortal officer had to say while also casually drinking from his cup.
"Yes, anyway we had an anonymous call half an hour ago stating that there is a suspicious group hanging around the back of a strippers club. It could just be some drunken group or it could be the ones we are after. The club is located down town about a twenty minute drive away and right now we have two cruisers making their way to them." Zack said with a serious tone.
"Well I do hope it is these people but I'm well aware at the possibilities that it is a very slim chance it's them." Shadow casually said then took another sip of his drink.
"We are going to be putting out a warning for vampires to not go out at night alone, the attack figures are rising with each passing week." Officer Jenny, a light brown wolf with bright amber eyes dressed an a cop uniform, said with a sad tone as she spoke.
"Yes that would be a very good idea, Sonic has already banned me from going out alone but like I keep stressing to him it's not possible for me to always have someone with me at night. Take now for instance, Sonic's away stopping Eggman and I'll be forced to go out alone. Before you say anything I point blank refuse an escort every night, it's a waste of services and time." Shadow said with a very serious look towards the end of his sentence.
"Reconsider. If anything ever happened to you, lord forbid, then your father will take more drastic actions." Jenny pleaded with a hopeful look that he would chance his mind.
"What are you suggesting my father will do exactly?" Shadow raised a brow in question.
"Come on isn't it obvious? If you were ever to be harmed, or worse, your father would declare was on us." Officer Troy, a tabby cat, announced with a serious tone and deep frown.
"He wouldn't declare war, you all are getting worked up over nothing." Shadow chuckled with amusement as he spoke.
"Just please have an escort or something." Jenny pleaded with begging eyes.
"You are worried that much of my safety? Alright fine, I'll sort something out but I cannot promise you I will have by the morning. In the mean time I'll teleport myself home using my gift so you wont have to worry too much. As soon as I'm done here I'm going straight to bed, I have a feeling it's going to be another busy day tomorrow." Shadow faintly smiles as he speaks.
"Yes it would put us all at ease and please stay in doors and lock up. There has been victims attacked in their homes when their partners are away." Troy added with a small frown.
"Of course I will. Makes you wonder if the attacks are just random or the vampires are being watched then attacked." Shadow smiled reassuringly as he spoke.
"You strike up a valuable point there Shadow, it is possible the victims are being observed before they are attacked, watching and waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike. We all just wish we knew why someone is doing this." Jenny sighed with slight despair, hoping her vampire partner was safe at home.
"Yes it is a mystery and I think it's more than just hate. These people are taking care not to leave any clues or allowing anyone to see them, that and forty nine vampire are fangless now over the course of a few months. That's a big number and going on for a long time for it to just be hate against us." Shadow said with his frown back.
Just as that was said a man rushes in and stops by the meeting table, out of breath from running. The man clears his throat and looks at all in the room as he composes himself.
"B-bad news, it wasn't them. Just a group of sixteen year olds smoking pot." The man sighed in disappointment.
"Right, thank you Gavin." Detective Jones said then looked over at Shadow adding, "it might not have been them tonight but they will slip up and when they do we will be ready. Why don't you go home and don't make any detours please."
"Of course, call me if anything happens ok." Shadow smirks as he stands up then used his gift to teleport back home.
An hour later…
"Finally a nice hot bath." Shadow sighs as he relaxes in the tub, eyes closed and a smile on his muzzle.
"Hey cuz, enjoying your bath?" Chase calls from behind the bathroom door.
"Chase what the hell are you doing here?" Shadow growls back with an annoyed tone as he sits up.
He didn't like being disturbed while taking a bath or surprised when alone at home.
"You really should lock the back door, anyone could just walk in." Chase replied with a chuckle.
"Damn it all, I forgot to lock up." Shadow whispers under his breath.
"Sorry but this bath is needed, just make yourself at home." Shadow groans out to his cousin as he slowly lays back down then once again closed his eyes and tried to relax.
"Sure thing cuz, want me to make you a drink?" Chase asks with an enlightened tone.
"Sure, thanks." Shadow calls back with a faint smile.
Half an hour later Shadow was out of the bath and dried. He walked into the kitchen and sat opposite his cousin, taking his mug into his hands with a smile.
"Where's Michael?" Shadow asked, expecting to see his cousins boyfriend here as well.
"Shads have you seen the time? It's almost midnight, Michael's in bed asleep." Chase raised a brow at the question.
"Damn, so much for an early night. I was called into the station because of some lead they thought they had on the people de-fanging the vampires, turns out it was just a few mid teens smoking drugs." Shadow groaned unhappily then drank from his mug.
"Damn, poor kids, bet they shit themselves." Chase laughed a little with amusement.
"Yeah bet they did." Shadow said back then chuckled at the thought of a bunch of teens crying and begging the police not to tell their parents.
"You've done far worse than that, remember the time you snuck out and met up with some girl in the middle of the night?" Chase smirked playfully while looking at his cousin with amusement.
"Hey she wasn't some girl and yes I remember. My dad was livid when he found out and embarrassed me to death when he thought I was sleeping with her. He gave me the talk on protective sex, in front of the entire council members and mum. She was just a friend who was having a rough time so I went out of my way to cheer her up." Shadow rolled his eyes and shook his head.
"Sure we believe ya. I bet you cheered her right up." Chase chuckled as his smirk grew fangy.
"I didn't sleep with her, I swear. Technically I'm still a virgin, with females anyway." Shadow smirked back at his cousin, also showing his fangs a little.
"Really, not even kissed a girl?" Chase asked with slightly shocked features.
"Nope not even kissed a girl or held a girls hand that isn't a family member." Shadow matter-of-fact said with his smirk in place.
"Wow, learn something new every night. Then again you never went to high school, you were home schooled or would the correct term be palace schooled?" Chase said in a casual tone.
"Both mean the same thing Chase. I did want to go to one but my parents said it was better for me to be schooled at the palace." Shadow frowned a little as he spoke, remembering him begging for a yes from his parents but never got one.
"You didn't miss much, trust me. You would have just been bombarded by everyone and never having a moments peace." Chase said with a soft tone and smile.
"Yeah probably. Oh now what?" Shadow complained as his phone went off, again.
"Hello Shadow speaking, may I ask who's calling?" Shadow forced a smile as he answered in a friendly tone.
"Shads, it's me. Don't you ever look at the caller ID?" Sonic chuckled with amusement.
"Sonic, how are things going?" Shadow happily asked with an actual smile.
"Yeah going well, I reckon I'll be home by tomorrow night. Yeah it is going that well babe, just calling to see how you are doing really?" Sonic cheerfully said back.
"All is fine at this end my love. I told you, you have nothing to worry about." Shadow softly says to his husband.
"Good to here it. You should see Eggheads latest robot, kind of looks like a washing machine crossed with an aeroplane that shoots fire balls from the drum in its chest." Sonic laughed then added, "I'll sent you a pic when I'm off the phone."
"I can just imagine it, you stay safe ok and I will see you tomorrow night. Love you." Shadow warmly replies.
"You too love, love ya, bye." Sonic replies then hangs the phone up.
Shadow puts his phone back on the table and shakes his head a little as he smiles happily.
"Awe how sweet, hubby checking up on ya." Chase teased a little with a forced dreamy look.
"Don't act like Michael doesn't do it to you." Shadow smirked playfully at his cousin.
"True, it's so nice to be loved." Chase chuckles with a smile.
"Yeah it is. Looks like Sonic managed to take a picture of Eggmans robot." Shadow smiled as he noticed his phone flash at the received picture message.
Shadow picked his phone up, opened the message and laughed then he showed Chase the robot.
"Man looks like a washing machine mated with an aeroplane and that's their kid." Chase laughed as he wiped a tear away.
"It does doesn't it, I think Eggman is running out of robot ideas or something." Shadow chuckled as he got out of the message and placed his phone back on the table.
By three o'clock Chase had gone back home, leaving Shadow to finally be able to go to bed for the rest of the night. He put his phone on charge then flops onto the bed and sighs out dreamily as his head sank into the pillow.
"Good night my love, I hope you are alright." Shadow whispers then soon after falls asleep.
