I entered the main lobby of the airport, carrying my luggage with me. I stand there looking around before walking towards the main entrance. I take a quick glance at my watch, making sure I'm not running any later than I already am.
'I hope they don't mind picking me up this late into the night.' I think to myself as I continue to look around the main lobby.
"Katana! Over here sweetie!" I turn around and see a woman with short, wavy, reddish-brown hair waving me over. A wide smile graces my face as I make my way through the sea of people towards her. I place my luggage on the ground beside me as I bring her in for a loving embrace.
"It's been way too long. I've missed you so much auntie." She pulls me closer, almost suffocating me to death before pulling away and planting small kisses all over my face. We pull away from each other and she stands there looking me over.
"Look how big you've grown! I can't believe it's only been seven years. It feels like just yesterday you just had your twelfth birthday!" I chuckle as I pick up my bag and follow her out of the bustling airport.
"Time sure does fly by. I'm really sorry for having you come out all the way here to get me. Especially at this hour." We approach the parked car, tossing my bags in the back seat before hopping into the passengers as Judy enters the drivers.
"It's alright dear I don't mind at all! You're family!" She starts up the car as I buckle up my seat belt, preparing for the long ride back to Tranquility. She drives out of the parking lot and into the busy streets. I stare at the night sky, watching the stars pass by as we get onto the freeway.
'I can't believe I left everything behind. A part of me feels guilty for leaving my father but I didn't have a choice. Once I received news that my mother died I knew I had to leave. I knew deep down he never cared and I was right. He never did. In all the seven years I was with him not once has he even tried. I had to fend for myself but at that moment I didn't care. All I cared about was survival. Once he started giving me money from the checks he's earned I've been saving. Even after I got a part time job as a sitter, I still saved. I'm glad to finally be out of there, at least here I know there are family and friends that will help me. I just need to figure out what this will says, so I know what my mothers final wishes were.' I tighten my fists around the seatbelt praying that It's not too late to decipher it.
"Why not take a nap dear, you must be suffering from some serious jetlag." I turn to look at her as she merges onto the next lane and picks up speed. I smile and mumble a quick response as I get comfortable. I lean my head onto the window counting the stars as I fall into a well deserved slumber.
"Hello? Mommy are you there?" A small girl around the age of six calls out down the hall looking for her mother. She grabs a fist full of her blue dress as she hears noises coming from her mothers office. Her brown boots make almost no noise as she slowly walks down the hall.
"Mommy?" She calls out again when a crash is heard from a room behind her. Her footsteps become slower as she approaches the room where she heard the crash. She stands in front of the room, pressing her ear against the wooden door. She hears multiple voices in the room including her mothers. She stays and listens as close as she can trying to understand what is being said.
"...She's just a child, her senses are not fully developed yet... I understand but... Fine. I'll hand her over once she's ready." The small child gasps and walks away from the door. This causes the voice to panic and change tone quickly. "I think she heard us...NO! No, that won't be necessary, I'll-I'll take care of it." Footsteps approach the door in a hurried manner causing the small girl to walk backwards and trip over her tiny feet. She falls down and tries to push herself away from the door as it is swung wide open.
"Mommy?" She whispers as tears threaten to fall from her green eyes. Her mother looks down at her with an unreadable expression.
"Mom?" The girl asks again, snapping the older woman out of her thoughts. She bends down to be at the same level with her daughter. She reaches her hand out to brush a loose strand of black hair but the small child pulls away. The woman looks at her sadly as she sits on her knees.
"Sweetie." The woman starts. "How much of our conversation did you hear?" It's quite for a while before the child responds in a hushed voice.
"That you are going to give me away." Silence washes over the two. The young girl stands up abruptly with tears streaming down her face making her mother feel guilty. "Tell me it's a lie! You wouldn't give me away, right mommy? Right!?"
"Katana I-" The door to the main entrance opens and shuts as a male voice calls out. The girl quickly runs towards the voice and crashes into the man's leg, giving it a tight squeeze. The man looks down at her confused.
"Kitty Kat, what's the matter sweetie?" He asks his daughter as he bends down to hold her. The woman walks into the room with a worried expression.
"Mommy doesn't want me any more, sh-she said she was gonna give me away!" She sobs into her fathers leg, heartbroken. He looks up at his wife with mixed emotions. The woman opens her mouth to speak but he silences her with a quick motion of his hands. He holds onto his daughters shoulders as he looks her in the eyes.
"I want you to go pack okay. I'm taking you to go spend some time with Sam. How does that sound?" The child nods her head as she wipes her tears away. As she packs some clothes and some of her toys she can faintly hear her parents arguing. A part of her feels guilty, she loves her mom. She would never do anything to her right? That night she was taken to her aunt's home, her father promising to come get her once he and her mother talked things out. Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months. She started to believe they would never come back to get her. She began regretting ever telling her father what she heard, but she can't take back what happened, she can only move forward. After six years on her twelfth birthday a woman comes to visit her at the Witwicky's residence. She doesn't recognize her at first but once she does she begins to cry tears of joy.
"Mom!?"
I slowly open my eyes as I sit up and stretch out my limbs. That dream again. I've been having it since I left Washington. I take a look at my surroundings confused on how I ended up sleeping on a sofa. Last thing I remember was sitting in the car with Aunt Judy.
"I see your finally awake kiddo." I turn my head towards the voice and see Uncle Ron walking out of the kitchen with two cups of coffee in his hands. He hands me a cup before taking a seat on the lounge chair. "You were knocked out last night, I had to get Sam to carry your ass in here while Judy and I got your bags for ya." My face heats up in embarrassment as I take a sip of the coffee.
"I'm so sorry, I must've been more tired than I thought I was. Thank you, you guys didn't have to do all that." He chuckles as he takes a sip from his own drink. I place my cup onto the table in front of us and fold my hands into my lap. A comforting silence washes over as we continue to drink our coffee. A few minutes pass by when Aunt Judy comes out of the guest bedroom.
"Good morning sleepy head, I just finished getting the guest bedroom all set up for you." She walks up behind the couch and gives the top of my head a quick kiss.
"Thank you auntie, I really appreciate you both doing all this for me." I look down into the almost empty cup feeling guilt wash over me. I hope I'm not a burden by being here.
"Anything for family. How about you join me in the kitchen? We can have a little one on one." I smile and nod my head as I stand up with my cup. I offer to take Ron's cup to the kitchen but he rejects it saying he'll take it when he's done as he turns on the television. I follow Judy into the kitchen as she takes out a bunch of ingredients. I place my cup in the sink as I look over all the things that are now placed on the counter. A smile graces my face when I see she brought out everything to make avocado toast.
"I wanted you to feel more at home by eating your favorite food." I go and give her a quick hug muttering a thank you before pulling away. I go and wash my hands before stopping. I can't get my prosthetic wet. I turn around to ask Auntie where she keeps her sanitizing wipes but she beats me to it. She pulls out a small box with the wipes and hands it to me as she grabs two aprons from behind the pantry door. I pull a hair tie out of my pocket, putting my hair into a quick high ponytail before cleaning my right metal hand and washing the left. I put on the frilly apron Judy hands me and get to work on boiling a couple eggs. After adding the perfect amount of salt to the water and putting the heat on medium, I wash the cilantro before cutting off the leaves and putting them into a small bowl. Judy puts the wheat bread in the toaster and takes out two large avocados.
"If you don't mind me asking, what made you want to come all the way back here?" I stand by the stove, watching the water boil around the white shells of the eggs. I think carefully to myself trying to find out why I wanted to come here. I could've gone anywhere I wanted but I chose to come back here.
"I don't know if I'm being honest. I guess I just wanted to be with the only family I have left while I fulfill Mother's will." I carefully remove the eggs out of the hot water using a ladle and placing them into the ice bath that was prepared. I hear a hum from behind me as the toaster goes off.
"How's that going for you? I remember you saying over the phone that you had trouble figuring out what it said." She hands me a plate with the toast as she goes and peels the shells of the eggs. I grab a knife and cut the avocados in half.
"I haven't gotten much progress done yet, but I'm going to meet up with one of my Mother's friends today. Hopefully they can point me in the right direction." I place the cut strips of avocado onto the toast, creating a small circular space for the soft boiled eggs to sit in. I hand the plates to Judy so she can place half of the egg on top. After getting what is now a late brunch ready, we place the plates on the table calling over Uncle Ron so we can enjoy our quick meal. I sprinkle some of the cilantro onto my toast before taking a big bite.
"So kid, I was wondering if you want to come with me to pick up Sam after this. I was planning on asking him to the car dealer after school if he can land an A on his final project." I use a napkin to wipe any yolk from my lips before responding with a smile.
"I'd love to join you, I wouldn't pass up an opportunity to hang out with Sam." After eating our brunch, I take the plates and put them in the sink. After finding some gloves, I begin to wash the dishes much to Auntie's displeasure. After washing and drying the dishes I ask for assistance in putting them away since I can't remember where everything goes. After putting the dishes away I walk into the guest bedroom to grab a change of clothes to take a quick shower before heading out to pick up Sam. As I'm in the shower all I can think about is the dream I had in the car.
'It must've been a repressed memory from my childhood or I could be overthinking things again. I need to stop doing that because one day there won't be time for it.'
