Year 2….
Chapter Twenty-Three
Hiccup-
Hiccup paced around his house. It was in top tip condition, in fact it looked the best it had in ages. Still Hiccup was worried it wasn't good enough. What if they think it's too small? Hiccup ruffled his hair and glanced around his little log cabin. What if they think it's too rustic? He shook his head. What am I saying? These are my friends, they'll just be happy to see me! Hiccup pushed all his worries to the back of his mind, at least as far back as he could get them and ran into the kitchen.
"Hey dad," he called.
"Hiccup. When are your friends getting here?" his father was in his normal jeans and brown muscle shirt. Added to his normal attire was a frilly white apron and matching mittens. Hiccup raised his eyebrows.
"Um dad?" he asked.
"I'm just cooking dinner," Stoik assured him.
"But, you never cook," Hiccup cocked his head to one side, still trying to take in his dad's appearance. Just then black smoke began to trickle out of the oven and fill the kitchen. Hiccup coughed and waved it away from his face as Stoik opened the oven and pulled out their casserole dish that was now filled with a burnt disaster. His father dropped it in the sink and coughed loudly.
"Um," he grinned sideways as Hiccup. Hiccup just rolled his eyes and laughed.
"I told you, you don't cook," Hiccup pointed out. Stoik attempted to blow some of the smoke away from himself as he turned to face his son.
"Yes, yes. So, do you think your friends would like to go out to eat?" he asked. Hiccup nodded.
"I think they'd love that," he said. "Now we'd better clean this up before they get here," he suggested. Just then he heard a knock at the door. Panic began to grip his heart as he took in the still smoke filled room.
"I'll take care of this you go answer the door," he dad winked. Hiccup took a deep calming breath before he turned around and ran to the front door. Straightening his shirt he opened the door to find Jack standing with his trunk and a bag slung over his shoulder. He was in a black v-neck and tan shorts with black rubber sandals. He had black sunglasses covering his eyes and his hair was ruffled and messy as always. He hadn't changed much since Hiccup had last seen him except he was slightly taller and his hair was longer, but he was still pale and had that crooked grin as always.
"Hiccup," Jack cried. He pulled Hiccup into a hug then pulled him back to look at him. "You still look like Hiccup," he laughed. It was true, Hiccup had only grown half an inch over the summer and he hadn't earned any muscles.
"And you still look like Jack," Hiccup grinned. Jack laughed and took off his sunglasses. His eyes were the same bright blue as before, still happy to see him.
"Is anyone else here yet?" Jack asked.
"Nope you're the first one. I'll help you bring your stuff in," Hiccup offered. Jack gave him is bag while he himself took on the struggle of pulling his overly large trunk into the house. "We're staying in the living room and the girls are staying upstairs." Hiccup led him into the living room.
It was furnished with two bear fur sofas and one leather love seat. At one end of the room was the flat screen TV and stretching across the middle of the room was the lion rug and the mahogany coffee table. Decorating the walls were the many heads of the animals his father had slain on his many hunting trips. Jack eyed them with one eyebrow raised and half his mouth twisted upward in a smile.
"Don't tell me the mighty Hiccup took down this beast," he teased. Hiccup dropped Jack's bag on one of the sofas before looking to see which animal he was talking about. When Hiccup turned he saw Jack closely studying the face of a Chinese Fireball dragon. It was Hiccup's least favorite head.
"No way. That's a dragon you moron. I'd never kill a dragon," Hiccup explained. "That's my father's job." Jack glanced at him.
"Did you just call me a moron?" he asked. Hiccup nodded. "I leave you for a few months and suddenly you think you can call me a moron. That's it, I can't leave you again. I'm gonna have to move in," Jack threw his hands in the air and grinned excitedly. Hiccup just looked at him. "I'm just kidding," Jack nudged him. Hiccup continued to stare. "That's the Hiccup I know," Jack grabbed him and gave him a knuckle sandwich.
"Jack," Hiccup wriggled away. There was another knock at the door and they both ran to answer it. Standing on the doorstep, dressed in light blue skinny jeans and a tight purple t-shirt with a dangly silver necklace, matching earrings, and with long blonde hair in an intricate braid so it only reached her waist, was none other than Rapunzel.
"Jack, Hiccup," she squealed and ran forward so she was giving them both a big hug. Hiccup smiled and hugged her back. She hadn't changed a bit.
"Hey Punz," Jack laughed.
"Rapunzel please," a new voice spoke. Rapunzel broke away from them and turned to the newcomer.
"Oh sorry. You guys, this is my mother, mother this is Jack and Hiccup," Rapunzel introduced them. Rapunzel's mother looked nothing like her daughter. She had curly black hair, a stiff, hard chin and blue eyes. She was more of a sick skinny than Rapunzel's natural slimness. Altogether she looked mean and rough and Hiccup was reminded of Rapunzel's fear that she wasn't really her daughter. He totally understood it now.
"Charmed I'm sure," she smiled. "Why aren't you all just adorable? No wonder Rapunzel was so desperate to come see you. You must be the cutest friends at Hogwarts, oh how sweet," she pinched each of their cheeks and then glanced around the house with a scrutiny eye. "Hmmm." Jack crossed his arms and gave her a defiant stare.
"Sorry about that," Rapunzel apologized just quiet enough so her mother couldn't hear. Hiccup shrugged. They couldn't control their parents, he totally understood.
"Can I meet your father?" she asked Hiccup.
"Yea sure, he's just in the kitchen," Hiccup led the way into his kitchen relieved to find that his father had cleared away the smoke and had taken off the apron and mittens. "Uh dad, this is Rapunzel's mom, Mrs. Gothel," Hiccup introduced him. Mrs. Gothel looked more than disgusted with Stoik's appearance.
"Well hello there Mrs. Gothel. Don't you worry about anything, I'll make sure they get all of their supplies and arrive at Kings Cross Station safe and sound," Stoik reassured her. From the look on her face Hiccup could guess she was less than thrilled at the idea of him taking over the care of Rapunzel.
"Yes well about that," she started. Just then there was another knock at the door.
"We'll get it," Hiccup called. Jack, Rapunzel, and Hiccup hurried out of the room, leaving Stoik to deal with Rapunzel's crazy over protective mother. Rapunzel was the first one to the door and she threw it open in her excitement to see her bestfriend.
They all stopped dead in their tracks and stared in shock at the person standing in the door way.
Jack Frost-
Jack gaped at this girl. It looked like Merida, but it couldn't be. This girl had perfectly curled red hair, not the crazy mess Merida claimed was her hair. She was also wearing what looked like makeup! That was definitely not Merida.
"What?" the girl asked as they just stared at her. "You haven't seen me this whole summer and all you do is stare?" she glared at them. This was too weird. This girl sounded like Merida and she looked like Merida, but she most positively wasn't Merida.
"Who are you?" Jack asked. Rapunzel punched him in the arm just as Merida would have if she had been there.
"Well I can tell you haven't changed," the girl glanced at Jack.
"He's just surprised by your new look," Rapunzel smiled. "But I love it. Did you do it yourself?"
"Of course not! This was my mother's idea. She said I needed to make a good first impression," the girl snorted.
"But you already know us," Hiccup said.
"I know! I'm telling you my mother has gone insane. She bought me all these new clothes and new hair stuff and she even got me makeup, MAKEUP!" Jack grinned, okay maybe this was Merida.
"Why does your mom care so much about you looking good when you're with us? I mean you were with us the whole of last year and you never looked good then," Jack teased. Merida marched up to him and socked him in the chest.
"Merida Donbroch. What are you doing?" a haughty and superior voice demanded.
"Crap," Merida breathed. She turned away from Jack and towards her mother. Jack stepped around her so he could see. Her mother was tall and elegant with long brown hair and she was wearing a silky green blouse with black pants. Her father was standing behind her. He was a mountain of a man with a short red beard and short red hair. He was wearing business like clothes and was holding Merida's three younger brothers.
"Oh leave her be Eleanor. That must be Jack, he is a Slytherin after all," her father tried to ease the wrath of Merida's mother. Eleanor reprimanded her husband with a stare then gave Merida a look that said 'I'll deal with you later.'
"You're right father, this is Jack," Merida introduced him. "And this is Hiccup and Rapunzel," Merida motioned to them. Both of Merida's parents moved into the house to meet them. Merida's brothers dropped out of their father's arms and took off through the house.
"Boys," Merida's dad called.
"Don't worry about it Mr. Donbroch," Hiccup shrugged it off. "We don't have anything important or valuable they can break."
"You still might want to go check on them Fergus," Eleanor said quietly. He nodded and headed after the boys. After a few moments they could hear loud laughing and noisy words. They glanced at each other. "We should probably go check on your father," Eleanor looked at Merida. Merida laughed.
"Probably," she agreed. Jack followed them through the house with Rapunzel and Hiccup.
They found Fergus in the kitchen with Stoik and Mrs. Gothel. The two men were the ones talking and laughing. Mrs. Gothel looked disgusted. "I had no idea it was your daughter my Hiccup kept talking about," Stoik exclaimed.
"And I had no idea it was your son my Merida kept going on and on about," Fergus chuckled. They laughed and clapped each others' backs.
"You know each other?" Hiccup tilted his head. The men glanced at the new arrivals.
"We went to Hogwarts together," Stoik said. He glanced at Eleanor. "El?" he gasped. She smiled.
"Yes it's me Sto," she nodded.
"El!" Stoik jumped up and swept her up in an enormous hug. Eleanor smiled and gently patted his shoulder.
"It's good to see you too," she laughed softly. Stoik returned her to the ground and looked from her to Fergus.
"I can't believe you two actually got married! I always thought you would end up with old what's his face, the really smart one from Hufflepuff," Stoik said to Eleanor.
"Jeremy?" Fergus asked. Stoik nodded vigorously. "He was no match for me," Fergus flexed his muscles and struck a pose. Stoik let out a booming laugh and made his own pose.
Jack glanced at Rapunzel and saw his own amusement echoed in her green eyes. The men were acting like children and even Eleanor looked like she had shed a few years. It was as if the three were still teenagers back at school.
"That's all very nice, but I believe the care of my daughter is much more important," Rapunzel's mother snapped, shattering the lighthearted atmosphere. They all turned to look at her. She had both hands firmly stuck on her hips and her elbows stuck out like points of a triangle.
"Yes of course," Stoik agreed. "And cared for she will be," he clapped a hand on her back. Somehow the small women wasn't knocked over by the abnormally large hand. She glared at Hiccup's father and opened her mouth to say something. "Don't you worry about anything. I'll make sure she's fine," Stoik pushed her towards the door. She struggled to stop him, but failed.
Mrs. Gothel's arguments can still be heard as she's pushed down the hall and out the door. Everyone who remains look at each other in amusement. "It was very nice to meet you too," Stoik called as he closed the door. In a few seconds he returned to the kitchen. "Who's ready to eat?"
"Oh, I am!" Jack raised his arm. Merida rolled her eyes and Rapunzel grinned. It felt just like old times.
"I guess we should go now," Eleanor said. "Have a good time Merida," she hugged her daughter tightly.
"Uh, mother," Merida grunted. Eleanor sighed and let her go.
"Come on boys," she gathered the triplets to her then started to leave. "It was good to see you again Stoik," she nodded her head at Hiccup's father. He smiled.
"Make your dad proud," Fergus laid his hand on Merida's head, ruining her perfectly groomed hair. She smiled brightly. "That's my girl," he chuckled. She hugged him.
"Bye dad," Merida squeezed him. Fergus patted her then turned to Stoik.
"Keep in touch Sto," Fergus said. Stoik nodded.
"Don't worry, I will." They shook hands then Fergus left. Stoik turned to them. "So where are we eating?"
Merida-
Merida collapsed onto the bed and groaned. Her stomach was full of food and her eyes felt extremely tired. All she really wanted was to go to bed, but still she stayed awake so she could talk to Hiccup, Jack, and Rapunzel.
"What's wrong ginger?" Jack teased. She didn't bother to reply.
"Oh give her a break Jack," Rapunzel reprimanded him.
"If I must," he sighed dramatically.
"Yes," Merida said gruffly.
"So what are we gonna do on our first night together?" Hiccup asked, wisely changing the subject.
"Fight," Jack suggested.
"But we do that all the time," Hiccup argued.
"Yeah, but it never gets old," Jack joked.
"Guys, you're doing it now," Rapunzel pointed out. They all got quiet and glanced at each other. Merida was the first one to start laughing, but eventually they all joined in.
"It's good to be back," Merida sighed. They nodded. "You have no idea what it was like to spend the summer with my mother. She gets worse every day," Merida grumbled.
"Haha sucks for you," Jack grinned. Merida threw her pillow at him and smacked his head. "Hey," Jack laughed and threw one right back at her.
"Pillow fight," Merida declared. She jumped up and slung another pillow at Jack. He dodged it and threw one at Hiccup. Rapunzel also threw one at Hiccup who ended up falling on the floor with a loud thud. "Be fair," Merida tossed a pillow at Rapunzel.
She squealed as it hit her abdomen and knocked her backwards. In retaliation she attempted to knock Merida to the ground, but she dodged. Jack threw another pillow at Merida who knocked it at Rapunzel. "Ahhh," Rapunzel let out a scream that was half laughter and fell onto a nearby bed.
"I'll avenge you," Jack cried. He threw several pillows at Merida. She cried out in surprise as she was buried in a mound of pillows.
"Not fair," she pushed them off of her and glared at Jack.
"You're just saying that because you didn't think of it," he smirked. She tried to be angry with him, but failed. It just felt so good to be back with her old friends it was hard to really be angry.
"Can I get a little help here?" Hiccup called. They glanced at a mound of pillows lying on the floor. Hiccup's arm stuck out of the side and franticly waved at them. They laughed and started forward to help him. As they drew closer Hiccup burst out of the pile and sent pillows flying at all of them. "Haha, take that!" he exclaimed.
"Why you sneaky little Ravenclaw," Jack cried out. He tackled Hiccup and ruffled up his hair. Hiccup laughed and pushed him off.
"What can I say? I'm smarter than you after all," Hiccup joked.
"Who are you and what have you done with sweet little scared Hiccup?" Merida demanded. Hiccup smiled sheepishly.
"Don't worry, I'll probably be back to normal when we get back to school," Hiccup shrugged.
"Speaking of school," Jack plopped onto a nearby bed. "Who's ready for Quiditch tryouts?" He smiled excitedly and wagged his eyebrows at them. Merida snorted and sat down at the bed across from him with Rapunzel.
"Oh please. Don't even bother trying out. When I make the team I'll win every match we play," Merida bragged.
"In your dreams Gryffindor. I'm gonna be the best seeker Slytherin has ever seen," Jack put his hands behind his head and lay back on the bed.
"You're gonna tryout for the seeker?" Hiccup asked.
"Yep. The last one graduated last year so they need a new one. I'm pretty much guaranteed a spot because I've been practicing all summer with Alex and Drake. They said I've got natural talent," Jack said smugly. Merida glared at him.
"Of course you'll get on the team that way you little cheat. But I'll get on the team through hard work and skill," Merida stated. Jack shrugged. "I'll be the best chaser at Hogwarts."
"I'll be the best cheerleader at Hogwarts," Rapunzel squealed. "I can paint banners and make outfits to wear to the games. This is gonna be so much fun!" She clapped her hands excitedly and bounced on the bed.
"And Hiccup will be the best nerd," Jack looked at his friend. Hiccup gave him a look and Jack chuckled.
"He can help me cheer!" Rapunzel suggested.
"Oh yes please," Jack nodded.
"You're really not helping the situation Rapunzel," Hiccup sighed.
"I just said he'd cheer with me," she said confusedly. Merida shook her head and laughed inwardly. Oh how she had missed this.
Rapunzel-
Rapunzel hummed contentedly as Stoik served breakfast. After Jack and Hiccup went downstairs last night she and Merida went right to bed. They woke up early and came down for breakfast, which Stoik was happy to order.
"Good morning sleepyheads," Merida said as Hiccup and Jack trudged into the kitchen. They yawned and Jack scratched his head.
"I was just getting ready to come see you Gryffindor. I wasn't asleep," Jack grinned. Merida rolled her eyes and took a sip from her drink. "I could never go to sleep knowing that you're under the same roof. The thought is much too terrifying." Rapunzel giggled and Jack winked. Merida glowered.
"You kids are just like me when I was young," Stoik set out two more plates and dropped some pancakes on them. They were all specially delivered from iHop because Stoik couldn't cook.
"What house were you in Mr. Haddock?" Merida asked curiously.
"Gryffindor of course," Stoik said. "I'm the bravest wizard to walk down those halls."
"I don't know, Merida's dad might have you beat. He has four kids after all, not just one," Hiccup pointed out.
"Good point son," Stoik laughed. "We were always butting heads at school. Except when it came to girls. I always had a girlfriend," Stoik said proudly. Rapunzel just managed to hide her laughter. Merida snorted then tried to cover it up with a cough. Hiccup looked embarrassed and Jack looked highly amused.
"But he married Eleanor," Rapunzel added.
"That he did," Stoik nodded. "He got the smartest girl at Hogwarts. She's a rarity you know, beauty and brains." Merida gave him a weird look. Jack made a kissy face at her.
"I'll rip those lips right off if you aren't careful," Merida snapped.
"Do you two always argue?' Hiccup demanded. Merida and Jack glanced at each other.
"Pretty much," they nodded. Rapunzel smiled and Hiccup groaned.
Together they all settled down to eat. Stoik told them lots of great stories while they ate. Most were about the adventures he had in school with his friends. It turns out he broke the rules a lot too. Jack and Merida seemed mildly impressed. Hiccup looked relieved. Rapunzel was just happy to be with them again.
"Whenever you all are ready we can go shopping for new school supplies," Stoik said after he finished one of his stories.
"But we haven't gotten our list of supplies yet," Hiccup protested.
"They came in this morning before you were awake," Stoik revealed a handful of letters with familiar green ink scrawled on the back.
"Well then what are we waiting for?" Jack demanded. "Let's go!"
A/N:
I have to say that I didn't think I would update this story again. I had almost forgotten about it to be honest. High school has a way of claiming your attention. Good news is that everything is alright with my friends again. Yayyyyyy! I'm out for a snowday so I was bored because I didn't feel like snapchatting anyone and I decided to write. I remembered this story and was like "That was really fun to write, I should update it!" I already had half the chapter finished from before so I just cleaned it up and added Merida and Rapunzel and then voila I present you with the first chapter of their second year at Hogwarts. Now I understand that there's probably nobody reading this anymore, but who cares? I still love the Big Four and I wanted to write this so yeah. I don't know when I'll update next, but it should be soon. I don't have school for the rest of the week so I should have plenty of time to write. I think that's it so if you liked this chapter leave a review and I'll try to update soon. Thanks for being loyal!
