I don't own RotG
Jack looked down at his feet and to the girl that was rubbing her head surrounded by discarded books. A frantic apology flew off his lips as he bent down to help pick up the books surrounding them. He stopped on one in particular and held it out to her, "What is this?"
Evienne look at him with pure confusion, "Surely you must not be serious?" At Jack's nod she gasped, "It's Othello, the Moore of Venice. By Shakespeare."
"Who?"
Evienne looked at him with pure shock in her eyes, frozen in the middle of grabbing the book from Jack, "You- you have never read William Shakespeare?" She asked as if the statement was the most absurd thing she'd ever heard.
"Well, I have never read most anything, actually." Jack responded matter-of-factly.
"You cannot-" She paused, "You where never taught to read?"
"Not many people here have been."
She finally took the book carefully from Jack's hands, "Well I just thought that you being the son of the mayor and such that you would have the schooling." She explained apologetically.
"Well, my father cannot read either, he has a member of our town appointed to reading anything that he needs, but even that person doesn't have much of a job as we do not often receive anything that requires his help." Jack explained.
"I do suppose life here will be much different from back in England." She mused to herself before looking at Jack with a spark of something he couldn't pin down in her eyes, "Do you want to learn?" She asked. At Jacks confused expression she elaborated, "Do you wish to learn to read? I could teach you if you would like."
Jack stared at her with confusion before slowly nodding his head, "That sounds like it could be fun." He said a smile spreading across his face slowly, "Alright, teach me how to read." He said with one final nod of his head.
Evienne smiled and beckoned for him to follow her, with her arms full of books and an eager Jack following her she marched off towards her house on the edge of the forest. He took the time to study the girl in front of him. She wore a simple drown dress with a hood, slightly muddied by his run-in with her, her brown tresses pulled into a bun that due to the fall was falling out had twigs stuck in it. Her arms were full of the books that seemed almost too large for the small girl to be carrying, and along the back of her right arm both her sleeve and her arm were stained with mud and a few scratches were not missed by the boys keen eye. Her movements were sure as she led them to her home though her steady movements were halted when a voice sounded behind them.
"Hello, Evienne."
Jack noticed the girls posture stiffen considerably as she turned to return the greeting, "Hello Morgan."
"And if I am correct you must be Jackson, the mayor's son?" Morgan asked turning to Jack.
"Yes I am." Jack responded almost choking on the tension hanging between the two girls. "And you are?"
"Morgan Pendra." She responded holding out her hand, which Jack took and placed a reluctant kiss on. "Might I ask why you are running around with her?" She practically spat the word her.
"She is going to teach me to read." Jack explained.
"Her? Surely there must be someone who is better suited for the job than the likes of Miss Jernigan." Morgan asked with a laugh.
"Would you like to give it a try you illiterate swine?" Evienne spoke up with a well-deserved sense of pride.
Morgan glared at her, "You think you are so superior to me because you can read and your mother has filled your mind with some nonsense about a myth."
Evienne smiled sweetly, "No, Miss Pendra, I know I am superior to you." She replied. "Regardless of what my mother says and my prowess in reading."
Morgan's jaw dropped in astonishment at her statement. She scoffed before turning back to Jack, "Mister Overland could I possibly trouble you for a full tour of you lovely town? I haven't a second to fully explore and I fear I might lose my way if I go it alone."
Jack heard the faintest scoff from behind him but ignored it, "If it would be alright with Miss Jernigan if I postponed our lessons?" He said unsurely turning to look back at Evienne.
"I suppose." She said blankly before turning and briskly walking away.
Jack turned back to Morgan who had a victorious smile on her face and offered her a reluctant arm before setting off into the town.
"Oooo." Bunny said in a pained voice.
"What?" Jack asked.
"That right there is what we call a cat-fight." Bunny explained.
Tooth jumped in, "Jack, Evienne clearly did not like that girl and you snuffed her in front of Morgan, that feels like ambush to girls and causes immediate dislike." She explained.
"Well, I'm sorry but I really can't do anything about it now can I?" Jack defended feeling like they were mad at him.
"Hope your past self didn't fancy Evienne, because after that she probably didn't speak to you ever again." Bunny said with a laugh nudging Jack.
"Shut up cottontail." Jack quickly shot back.
Jack sat at the table in his kitchen with his head resting atop his folded arms. His father sitting across from him with crossed legs and knowing smile on his face, his mother stood in the doorway with Emma in her arms watching the discussion play out. "Jackson, what you must realize is that women are fickle creatures."
"Harold!" His mother chimed in angrily, "We want to teach him not wound him." She looked to Jack and smiled, "Son, Evienne probably recognizes that you have no reason to dislike Morgan as she does, go over to their house and talk to her ask if her offer to teach you still stands. You must build a stronger bond with this girl before you can truly understand why she behaved the way she did towards Morgan." His mother explained.
Jack nodded and stood from the table giving his mother a hug and heading out the door towards the Jernigan's House on the edge of town. He stopped his fist right before it hit the door and stoned his face. Three hard pounds landed on the door and moments later it opened to reveal Evienne's mother.
Jack smiled graciously at the woman, "Good afternoon Mrs. Jernigan, is Evienne in?" He asked politely.
"Ah Jackson, of course she is, she is just in the main room." Mrs. Jernigan answer back sweetly stepping aside to allow Jack to enter the house. She pointed towards the room that Evienne was in and Jack thanked her before walking away.
When he reached the threshold of the main room he saw Evienne sitting on the couch and polishing the sword he had recalled seeing her with when they had first arrived. Without even turning her head to acknowledge Jack she spoke, "I gather that as you've never read you must not know of the legend of King Arthur and the sword Excalibur?"
"No I have not." Jack said finally stepping into the room and up to the girl. He observed her meticulously cleaning the sword, she had at some point fixed her hair as there were no twigs left in it and the bun was a perfect circle atop her head. She still wore the same outfit stained with mud though.
"In the legend a women is said to have emerged from the very depths of a lake itself and bestow upon King Arthur the sword Excalibur, that beheld powers beyond ones wildest imagination, that he may defeat the evil sorceress Morgana once and for all. But in that time the king failed and Avalon fell. The Lady of the Lake stole away with the sword of great power before Morgana could reach it and hid it and its power. From that one woman's bloodline emerged a great tradition, a maiden born of a maiden born of a maiden born of the Lady of the Lake will carry and protect Excalibur and when the time comes of Morgana's reincarnation to wreak havoc upon the earth once again, and in that time they will bestow the power of Excalibur to one who, like Arthur, is found worthy to wield it and bring to past the time of the restoration of Avalon upon the earth." She finally looked up at Jack, no longer polishing the sword, "This is said to be the very sword from that legend. Handed down generation to generation among maidens born of maidens born of the first Lady. My mother is the Lady of the Lake, and when she passes the burden will fall to me." She placed the sword in Jack's hands to allow him to observe it. It was a plain long sword to those giving it a passing glance, but upon closer inspection much detail was revealed. A jewel incrusted hilt made of gold led way to a beautifully crafted blade inlaid with intricate writings of what Jack could only assume was some ancient language. "Datur autem qui digni consueuisse" She spoke noticing his gaze upon the writing, "Power is given to those who are worthy of wielding it." Jack looked at her, "Whether Morgan is right and this is some silly myth or it is true only time will reveal. But I will bear the beliefs of my mother and her mother before her and her mother before her, with pride." She concluded.
Jack looked at her and smiled handing her back the sword, vowing then and there that regardless of the strange customs of her family she was no different than he and he would make sure the whole town knew it, "Is your offer to teach me still good?" He asked.
Evienne's seriously demeanor changed at the question and her shoulders relaxed as she took back the sword and placed it back on its spot on the mantel running her finger along the engraved lettering. "Of course. We shall begin now." She said crossing the room and grabbing a familiar book off the table.
Jack looked at it and read its title as he remembered her saying, "Othello, the Moore of Venice."
She nodded with a smile, "Shall we begin?" She asked sitting down and waiting for him to join her. Jack nodded and took his seat beside her. She opened the book and began teaching him ho each letter combined with the next to make the words that the great Shakespeare had written. Jack listened intently and tried as best he could to follow her instructions and sound the words out. Asking frequently what each word meant in reference to the next.
Jack halted upon one line, "For she had eyes and chose me." He read softly, "What does he mean by that?"
"One can only gather what he meant from their own minds, to me it means that she could see who he was and yet still loved him even when other's would not." Jack nodded at her explanation before allowing her to continue further into the play.
"Well, I have to admit you are better than I would have thought." Bunny said teasingly. "You might be able to actually trick that girl in falling for you."
"What if she did?" Jack asked solemnly, "What pain did my death cause her?"
"Hey, buck up, you don't even know if by the end of your life she'll even like you." Bunny tied to make him feel better but Jack could still feel the drop in his gut at the thought.
"I just never considered that I had friends or anyone other than family." He stated sadly.
"Jack, you said that you had to know this to gain full peace with yourself, and that means maybe seeing something you didn't want to leave behind." She said as if she knew something about his life that had yet to be shown. Jack eyed her curiously before nodding and turning back to memories.
