CHAPTER 25 – What's It Going To Be?
"Beca, I think we should talk." Lucy said, her tone gave Beca the very idea on where this conversation will lead to, but she doesn't say anything. "It's just…I don't know." Lucy sighed as she ran a hand through her hair, drinking the whole glass of wine she just poured not long after.
Beca kept on being quiet, waiting patiently on what the blonde would have to say. She kind of knows what the next words could possibly be coming out of the blonde's mouth. It's not that she wanted this to happen, break ups do suck – there, she just thought of the word "break-up" – and it still is enough to put a pain through her heart.
"I saw you." Lucy said. Beca tilts her head and cocked an eyebrow in this statement. "I arrived a few minutes ago, and I saw you holding a ring, and I…I don't know. I freaked out, so I had to go out for a while." she then poured another glass of wine, just so there's something else she can do aside from preparing her speech. "I started to think what our future could be here. Where we could be standing in the next 4 or 5 years from now…and I see…"
Beca waits patiently. She's baffled at the thought that Lucy saw her holding Chloe's supposedly engagement ring and found it amusing that Lucy thought she was gonna propose to her – not that she didn't had that in mind, it's just that she thinks it's a little too early for that, but she's willing to know what Lucy could be thinking about their future.
"I can't really see myself having a family…" Lucy said quietly, fiddling with the wine glass on the counter, staring up at the brunette with worry-filled eyes. "I mean, you're an amazing person Beca, and I'm really glad that you're in my life…but if that's what you have in mind…then I don't think this is going to work out."
Alright, so this is where it really was going to. A break up. Of course, it stung to the heart, to the core – but Beca just feels like she was expecting this. Lucy did show the signs that she wasn't really into the "domestic" kind of life. She was the type of woman who will always pick her career over anything, and Beca respected that.
The brunette simply smiled at the woman who was avoiding her eyes. She took a few steps towards Lucy and held her face to lift it up and look directly in her eyes. "Hey" Beca said, as gentle as a whisper trying not to break the intimate and sad moment. "It's okay." Tears welled up in Lucy's eyes and Beca can feel the hurt through it. "I've known you enough to know that."
"But, why did you stay with me?"
"Because I love you." This was true. Beca owes a lot to Lucy, and she wouldn't be where she is without the blonde. "And also, I couldn't get enough of this hot blonde." She winked at her just to lighten up and make Lucy laugh a little. Lucy slapped her on the arm lightly and they laughed-still being close to each other.
"Dammit, this was supposed to be sad, Beca."
"I know, I know but you know me." Beca shrugged and Lucy nodded in agreement. She tucked a hair behind Lucy's ear. "Kidding aside though, you don't have to worry about me. Or us. Or this. I totally understand you and will always understand you."
"It sucks to break us up though." Lucy said, sniffing and leaning her forehead on Beca's collarbone.
"Yeah, but at least it's not as dramatic as other break ups do."
"You're right." Lucy lifts her head and smiled at her. "So what's your plan now?"
This time, they separated and Beca was leaning against the counter as Lucy was sitting on the counter chair.
"Well, I might go to Luke's first. Spend a few days there, maybe get a new environment. You know." Beca shrugged, and Lucy nodded. "I have to keep my stuff here though, if that's okay…until I find a new place?"
"Of course. You can keep your stuff here."
"Thanks." Beca smiled. "For the record though, the ring you saw I was holding earlier…" Beca turned her head to see Lucy tensed up at the word "ring", "that wasn't yours." She smiled and saw the gradual widening of Lucy's eyes.
"What?!"
"Yeah" Beca laughed.
"Then who – "
"It was supposed to be Chloe's."
Lucy furrowed her eyebrows. "Chloe's?"
"Yeah…we had a thing back then." Beca said and began explaining to Lucy about the things that had happened before they even met. From the beginning to the day it ended.
"Huh. Well, that makes sense." Lucy said, and Beca arched an eyebrow in question. "It's just that, the whole time we were in Cali, you and Chloe have this…this tension. I just ignored it because I just knew you two were very close."
"And you didn't say anything?" Beca asked.
Lucy shrugged, "I didn't think it was a big deal. And I like Chloe, she's really sweet." Beca chuckled and smiled.
"Yeah, she really is."
Chloe started internalizing a lot of things in her head. Mostly about Beca. She has read the letter for a few times now and the more she reads it, the more she thinks about it.
Beca and Lucy had broken up. And Beca might or might have not just told her – through a letter – that she's still in love with her.
Okay, what if this is some sort of sign? A sign indicating that it's time for her to get a grip of herself and start doing what she should've done a long time ago: To go after Beca and win her back. She has let that woman walk away from her life, and she's not going to let that happen again – not on her watch, knowing that she now has a chance to make everything right.
No more passive-aggressive Chloe. No more self-pitying Chloe. No more waiting. If there's something she should be doing, it's going to her car and drive her way to the airport. And that she did. Well isn't this scene quite familiar?
She ran down to the old man by the ground floor and asked him who left the letter; she showed him a picture of Beca and he nodded, confirming that it was indeed the brunette who left the letter for Chloe a couple of hours before she arrived. With that, she ran towards her car.
She was practically flooring it, and lucky enough that there's no traffic, and no police sirens have been blaring after her, so it's all good. She tried calling Beca, but it always leads to voicemail. Practical, she might have just turned it off or put it in airplane mode because she's on the airplane now! – Come on Chloe, you can't think negativities right now, you need to catch up with the love of your life!
She arrived at the airport after a few running-the-red-lights later and searched the airport hall for the brunette she's known very well. She tried every angle, every corner she can look for. She tried looking at the flight board but dammit, Beca didn't tell her which flight or what country she'll be going to so she's practically searching empty-handed here. She turns her head, trying to see that beautiful face of Beca's but failed miserably. She tried calling again, but all it led was to voicemail. She gasped, trying to control the tears welling up in her eyes.
And then, as if the universe or God, rather, has heard her prayers – she heard the announcement through the speakers as it echoed through the hall.
"Flight 36A7 – San Francisco to London, England – Now boarding. Passengers of Flight 36A7 – San Francisco to London, England – Now boarding."
At that moment of impact, it dawned on her that Beca could be going to Luke and Laura in London. She smiled at herself, pure pride at the fact that she – well, she's not yet sure, but it's a pretty solid theory – figured out the answer on where Beca could probably go. She looked at the flight board and looked at that particular flight, where Beca could probably be in.
With full dedicated eyes, she smiled on it and said, "Wait for me, Becs. I'm coming for you and will never let you go. Ever again."
Chloe came home, Beca-less but fully determined on the plan she has in mind. Hopefully she was right though, because if she's wrong about anything – well that's just depressing. She looked at the time, seeing that it has been 30 minutes after the flight took off, and an average flight time from San Fran to London is around 10 hours, so she has a lot of time to make her plans as Beca is confined in the plane. She has at least 10 hours to think things through.
The first thing she did, she messaged Luke – one of the perks of the social media, you can easily message someone even out of the country without paying so much money.
Chloe: Luke!
[Luke now active]
Luke: Hey, Chloe. What's up?
Chloe: Are you going to meet up with Beca soon?
Luke:…how'd you know?
Chloe squealed in delight. Beca really was going to London! Okay, now that has been established, she needs to lay the plan down.
Chloe: I just guessed…but hear me out, I've got a plan…and please keep this between us.
Luke: I'm listening.
Beca was thankful that her seat in her flight was beside the window, that way she can distract herself with the pleasure of looking at the clouds passing through the wings of the plane. Distract herself from the thoughts running through her head. Thoughts of doubt, asking herself if writing that letter to Chloe was the right thing? What if she has moved on, and now it's weird again between us?
She shakes her head. What does she have to lose, right? It's a good thing she's going to Luke and Laura to spend a few days to save herself from the embarrassment.
Although, if she's going to be honest – she doesn't regret it. Yeah, embarrassed, but not regretting it. Everything she has said in that letter was true, and she wouldn't have it any other way. If everything that has happened will lead them both back together – then it will. After all, all the best things in the world never comes easy, especially the best people for you.
Maybe Lucy was a good partner for her, but not the best one yet. However, Chloe is the best one. She was the one who has the best blue eyes, the best laugh, the best smile, the best friend anyone could've hoped for – and the best girlfriend she could ever asked for. Chloe was it.
But she was also wondering if she was the best one too for Chloe. And maybe this is a good way to put things to the test. But maybe that's asking for too much, and maybe she won't get anything at all…maybe she really wasn't the best one for Chloe.
What does she have to lose, right? The plane took off anyways.
"Happy birthday to you…"
The first few notes of the birthday song had Beca in a giggle fit, covering her face with the book she's been reading for days. It was 5:00 in the morning, the first few hours of her birthday and she likes to spend it cold & cozy in Luke and Laura's guest room here in London. But when the door opened to reveal Luke holding a lighted cake, Laura and their few months old baby boy, Laurence, behind him. They were singing quietly, as if not to disturb the atmosphere of the quiet morning.
"Happy birthday, dear Beca…happy birthday to you." They finishes, and Luke laid the cake in front of Beca, eyebrows raised and a smile on his face, encouraging his little sister by heart to blow the candles.
"Make a wish, Becky." Beca paused for a moment and then rolled her eyes with a smile and blew the cake. Once the smoke whiffed through the air, the couple made a hushed "yey!" and Laura raising her baby boy's hand and dancing him, while Laurence just looked at her having no idea what's happening.
"I like how Laurence thinks this is stupid." She says jokingly as she stood up from her chair, and proceeds in wrapping her arms around Luke's midsection, and then Laura and kissing baby Laurence on the cheek. "Thanks, you guys. You don't know how much this means to me…I mean, with letting me stay here and all."
"Oh, don't be so dramatic Beca." Laura waves off with a laugh, "You're family, and this is what families do."
"She's right Becky." Luke smiled towards his wife as he wraps an around her, "And if I may ask…what did you wish for?"
Beca chuckles and shakes her head, "Just something simple. For the things be the way they should be."
"Don't worry, kiddo." Luke ruffles Beca's hair, getting a whiny "hey" from the brunette, "it will be soon." He said.
They all had a wonderful breakfast, thanks to Laura's cooking skills – Luke being such a proud husband, telling Beca how the first thing a wife-material should have is knowing how to cook. The two brits were all lovey-dovey in front of her, and she couldn't help but think how she and Chloe used to be just like that. Every morning was like honeymoon stage. She will cook Chloe some breakfast, and Chloe will distract her from cooking – making clumsy kisses around the kitchen.
She was taken out of her daydreaming when Luke asked her what her plans for today was, because he & Laura and Laurence will be running errands but they promised her for a celebration that night before her day ends. She told them she'll just be going around the city, maybe spend her time in a coffee shop while making some new mixes, or "just read the whole day through".
Beca decided to just hang around the city. Go to libraries for a good read, maybe buy herself some new clothes, canvass a new laptop so she can upgrade her old one…and after those, just chill out in her fave coffee shop to read.
If her 18-year old self would see who she was right now, they would be like "who the hell are you?"
She used to be mad about the world, or angry at herself for all the bad shit that has happened in her life. She used to close herself off in the loudness of her music. She used to love to party hard, be in the night life…but now? She's like any other introverted hipster out there – totally out of character, yes…but this is who she is now.
And if she's going to be honest with herself, the people who were involved in her life – the ones who stuck with her through the crazy roller-coaster called "life" – are the biggest factors why she was content right now. She likes the quietness, and the calmness she's in. She's not bothered anymore…this is the sign that she has grown up.
She smiles at herself for being too cheesy on herself but can't help but admit that it is the truth.
27 years and this is the only time she has truly reflected on what has happened in her life…her parents' divorce, her starting feelings for Chloe that turned her world upside-down, them being together for 7 years, them breaking up…her being broken, her getting back up again, her finding Lucy, her and Chloe reconnecting, her and Lucy breaking up but in a very well manner, and –
"Is this seat, taken?"
Beca's eyes widened at the sound of her voice. She looks up from the book her eyes were glued to, and saw that familiar blue eyes, that familiar red hair, and that familiar bright smile. She raised an eyebrow thinking if all those reflection thoughts – that mostly consisted of Chloe – had taken an effect of her hallucinating.
Chloe's bright smile weakened to the thought of maybe Beca wasn't so thrilled to see her there.
"C-chloe?" Beca stated, like she was checking if it's really her. If she's really there…there in front of her…in London. Chloe made a shy smile and a small wave. Beca puts her book down and stands up from her seat…eyeing Chloe as if she's made of gold. "You're…you're here."
"Yeah…I'm here, Becs." Chloe replied, like she can't believe it either.
"Why – how?"
"I'll explain everything" Chloe said as she took hold of Beca's arm. A clear indication to Beca that Chloe is in fact there and she's not hallucinating. "But first, I gotta make things right. To make things the way they should be…and hopefully, in the right place. If you'll let me?"
Beca looked at Chloe. This was it. This is her wish coming true…and this time, it was Chloe who came to her. Chloe flew all the way from san Francisco to see her there, in London. Without any hesitation, Beca pulled Chloe to a tight hug, which was reciprocated by Chloe.
"Happy birthday, Becs." Chloe whispered into brown locks of hair. She was teary-eyed now, and so was Beca.
Beca released a teary laugh, "Did you seriously flew to London just to tell me that?"
"No." Chloe said, as they pulled back, and looked at each other. "I came here, because I love you and you deserve everything in the world. That's why I'm going to give it to you."
Beca was silent, waiting what else Chloe has to say.
"I'm here to tell you everything, Beca."
-End of chapter –
