Chapter 2 – Angel of Music

That night at the Opera House was nothing that Ezra had seen before. After he sang the song, they immediately told him he got the part. Instead of him dressed in his usual dance attire, he dressed in a silver-white tux and pants. His hair slightly combed back, but it still held the teen's typical messy look to it. The lights on the stage illuminated off his clothes as he looked throughout the crowd in awe.

He never knew he would make it this far. His teacher had told him that he would make a beautiful singer one day, but he didn't expect this. The crowd of a thousand people was here to hear him sing one song. He could even see that Kanan was up in the boxes to watch the performance as well. Nervousness started to strike the teen's heart as he tried to control his emotions. The last thing he wanted was to make a fool of himself in front of thousands of people.

The music started to take its course so Ezra could sing again, and so, with a deep breath, he did.

"We never said our love was evergreen or as unchanging as the sea. But, if you can still remember, stop and think of me. Think of all the things we've shared and seen. Don't think about the way things might have been."

Off to the side of the stage, Sabine and Hera were both watching Ezra with smiles on their faces. They knew Ezra had a gift in singing; they just never understood why the teen didn't like doing it. Hera patted her daughter's shoulder gently as she started to make her way to join the patron up in the boxes.

"Think of me; think of me waking, silent, and resigned. Imagine me, trying too hard to put you from my mind. Recall those days, look back on all those times, think of the things we'll never do. There will never be a day when I won't think of you."

Up in the boxes, Kanan couldn't stop looking at the teen on stage. He knew he had heard that voice somewhere before but just couldn't put his finger on it. Derik and Violet had told him that Zeb had quit the show unexpectedly and that they found another singer to do his part. At first, Kanan was a little skeptical. He didn't know the singer and was afraid that the people would ask for their money back. He knew he would if the person he was expected to see wasn't on stage, and the other did a horrible job. But he was immediately turned down when the teen opened up his mouth.

He sounded like an angel.

Just then, Kanan's eyes widened as he looked at the teen closely. His raven hair swishing slightly as the teen moved his head, and his blue eyes would sometimes look up at Kanan but then quickly look back out into the audience. Realization struck the man instantly.

"Can it be? Can it be, Ezra?"

The words that came out of his mouth were just the kick he needed to pull himself together. With a smile, he quickly stood up and clapped his hands together while saying, "Bravo!" Kanan moved from his seat and started to make his way downstairs. Caught up in his excitement, he didn't even notice Hera, who stopped in her tracks when she saw the man walking away from his seat.

"Long ago, it seems so long ago. How young and innocent we were! He may not remember me, but I remember him."

The soft melodic sound of Ezra's voice soothed the audience as they clapped after his last break. They had never heard a more beautiful voice before, and Ezra seemed to relax from the audience's attention. He was coming close to the end of his song and felt relieved by it. Ezra did like to sing, but his body was tired. All he wanted to do was go back to his room and sleep for the rest of the night. The music started to change again, and the raven readied his voice as he began to sing again.

"Flowers fade, the fruits of summer fade, they have their seasons, so do we. But please promise me that sometimes you will think…"

Ezra stopped as a grin started to form on his lips. Guess it's time to show off then. He thought as he began to sing in an up and down rhythm that made the audiences faces awe in wonder.

"…of me!"

The audience clapped and cheered as they stood up in their seats. Ezra smiled as he bowed to thank them for their support. Flowers were flown onto the stage as the teen quickly picked one of the flowers up and made a dash for it backstage. If he didn't hurry, there would be no telling what would happen to him if the people caught him in the hallways.

The night was a success as everyone backstage cheered for the incredible performance that had just happened on stage. Sabine was quick to make her way towards her brother to congratulate him but lost sight of him when she entered the busy hallway of the theater. Everyone was outside in search of the beautiful voiced teen to talk to him, but Sabine knew that her brother wouldn't be out here even if dared.

Nobody would want to be out here in this chaos for too long.

There was only one place she knew where the teen would be and quickly made a dash towards the underground chapel in the Opera House.

Underneath the opera house was a chapel. Only a few people knew about it, and Ezra was one of them. He called it his sanctuary, a place where he would come to be alone, or after a performance. A small shrine built in the center of the room where Ezra knelt; he lit some candles, the light illuminating off a picture of the teen's parents. Ezra bowed his head to make a quick prayer to his parents when suddenly –

"Brava, brava, bravissima…"

The chilling ghost sound of an unknown voice danced through Ezra's ears. He quickly opened his eyes as he looked around the room to see where the voice was coming. He had heard it many times before when he was younger. He had thought he was losing his mind at first, but then soon discovered that the voice was nothing but harmless. It always spoke to him when he was ever feeling down or out of it.

It made him feel like he had an angel by his side.

Suddenly, the sound of footsteps came as Ezra looked back to the doorway.

"Ezra? Ezra?"

The voice was too familiar for the teen not to know it. A smile soon started to form on Ezra's lips. He was about to call out to his sister when –

"Ezra…"

The same unknown voice from before spoke again, only this time it was faint. Ezra snapped his head back around as he searched the walls for a clue of any kind, but nothing stood out to him.

Suddenly, Sabine finally made her way down the spiral staircase as she saw her brother knelt over in front of the shrine he had built for his parents. A tease started to play in her voice as she made her way over to him.

"Where in the world have you been hiding? Really – you were perfect. I only wish I knew your secret! Who is your great tutor?"

Ezra couldn't help but smile at his sister's teasing voice. She always made him smile even when he didn't want to. It was one of the things he was grateful towards her. He was a very self-centered person when he was younger. He didn't want anyone around him even Hera, who had taken him in, but that didn't stop Sabine. She did everything she could to win the boy's trust, and through time, she did.

That didn't mean Ezra told her everything.

"Sabine, do you remember when Hera took me and brought me here to live?" the teen questioned, not looking Sabine in the eyes.

Sabine nodded her head. "Of course, I would never forget that day. Why are you asking me this all of a sudden?" She furrowed her brows in confusion.

Ezra didn't say anything. He continued to stare at the picture of his parents, his mind battling with words to say.

Sabine noticed the contemplative look on her brother's face and began to grow worried. "Ezra?"

Ezra tilted his head slightly to show that he heard her, and gave a small sigh. "When Hera brought me here, I was skeptical about the people around me. You know first hand I didn't want to associate with anyone; I still don't." He glanced over at Sabine before looking back at his parents. "I was alone here. I didn't know anyone. The only piece I had of any connection with a familiar face was my parents' picture. I felt I needed to honor them, so I came down here and made them a shrine. Every night I would come here and pray to them so I wouldn't feel so alone, but… one night I heard something, a voice."

"A voice?" Sabine questioned suddenly.

Ezra only nodded as he continued, "Yes, a voice. It was always faint and called me by name. I didn't know what it was at first, but after these past three months, I think I know what it could be. You see after my parents died, they told me an angel would protect me, an angel of music."

Sabine stared at Ezra as she listened. She honestly didn't know what to say. One part of her wanted to believe that the teen was playing a joke with her, but knew Ezra enough that he wouldn't lie about something like this. It was still hard to accept, though. Slowly, she placed a supporting hand on Ezra's shoulder to make him look at her, "Ezra… Are you telling me that you think the spirit of your parents is coaching you?"

"Who else, Sabine?"

Sabine didn't answer as she looked away in deep thought. Ezra noticed the worried look on his sister's face but understood why she would be. It wasn't natural. But he knew that the voice was real. He heard it every night when he prayed and before he fell asleep. It wasn't solid proof that they existed, but Ezra's voice should be enough. He wouldn't have sounded the way he did without his angel teaching him.

"My parents once spoke of an angel. I used to dream he'd appear. Now, as I sing, I can sense him, and I know he's here. Here in this room, he calls me softly, somewhere inside, hiding. Somehow, I know he's always with me. He – the unseen genius."

Ezra stood up from his spot on the floor, Sabine following close behind him. He was talking to himself as he glanced around the room. Sabine, growing weary for her brother, took the boy by the hand and started to lead him up the staircase.

"Ezra, you must have been dreaming. Stories like this can't come true. Ezra, you're talking in riddles, and it's not like you!"

Even if the words of what his sister said held some logic to it, Ezra couldn't bring himself to agree with her. Whether he sounded crazy or not, he knew his angel was real and one day, he was going to prove it to Sabine and anyone else who didn't believe him.

"Angel of music, guide, and guardian, grant to me your glory."

"Who is this angel this…" Sabine whispered to herself as she continued to drag Ezra back to his quarters.

"Angel of music, hide no longer, secret and strange angel." Both teens murmured to themselves, both having different meaning in their words.

Suddenly, Ezra stopped walking, making Sabine stumble as she looked back. The raven boy was glancing around the halls, every shadow making the hairs on the back of his neck stand up.

"He's with me even now…"

"Your hands are cold…"

"All around me…"

"Your face, Ezra, it's white!"

"It frightens me…"

"Don't be frightened."

And there you have it! Please review or PM me if you guys want more of this, cause I know I do :)
