They didn't talk about it when they pulled apart. Obviously he was stunned, but that's probably why the future Doctor told Holly that he'd think about it for a long time. Holly didn't mind waiting to talk about it, even though all she could think about were the fireworks exploding in her stomach while Scarlett put a hand on her shoulder. Scarlett watches as Donna comes back and sees a glimpse of a certain Rose Tyler running away.
"Okay... why the silence? I thought you two were just yelling," Donna says, watching the two be awkward. Holly gives a small smile and turns around while Scarlett goes up to Donna and whispers to her. Donna opens her mouth, shocked. Holly would've been surprised as well if she did it willingly and not what the future Doctor had told her.
"I've been to your future," Scarlett tells Holly as they sit on her bed with her journal and invisible ink pen. Holly rolls her eyes.
"Of course you have. I know of your 'White Glow' condition."
"Is that what it's called?" Scarlett asks. "You never told me about it. I had to find out for myself."
"How many 'episodes' have you done?" Holly asks, ignoring her question.
"Four, but technically five because it was my first time. I was in a two part episode. The one I liked, but obviously now I experienced it in real life... Do you remember what one I liked?"
"Barely. It's been two years since I've been in our world. Since I've seen you," Holly says, looking down. Scarlett gasps.
"Oh no! I totally forgot that you were in the year that never was," says Scarlett, "but... Two years?"
"I was kidnapped by the Master after I regenerated," Holly tells her. "I don't remember it because I was taking a regeneration nap while the Doctor tried to solve a problem."
Scarlett starts to cry. "I'm so sorry Holly. How did you survive? I mean, wouldn't it have been just a year... wait. Were you not in the year that never was?"
"Leila took me out before it even happened. Do you remember what happened in that episode?"
"Um – Well you might not b-be happy about it, because th-the Master turned the Doctor really old. Like this c-current regeneration... and then later–"
"Something else happened?" Holly asks, eyes wide.
"Uh, it's kinda hard to explain," she says. "The Doc –"
"Speaking of which," the Doctor says, leaning against Holly's bedroom door, looking at the two that were on her bed. "He is wanting you two to go to sleep."
"I don't think I can," Holly says, looking down. "Even though I am so tired, I just know..."
"Even though it was a month ago for me," the Doctor says as Scarlett gets up from the bed, "if I remember correctly, Neil told us that our future selves were sleeping together to help each other with our nightmares."
"Ooh! And it's the perfect opportunity to discuss that thing that happened out there just an hour ago."
Holly glares at Scarlett as she smirks. The Doctor's cheeks turn red and he clears his throat. "I'll be back in a moment. Donna just picked a bedroom to sleep in when we're not on our adventures."
"I can show her around the TARDIS," smiles Scarlett. "I've been here only a few times, though with future things, I might get... never mind."
The Doctor watches Scarlett play with the ring on her finger as she leaves the room. Holly sighs and puts her elbows on her criss-crossed legs and hands on her eyes. She starts to cry, and that's when the Doctor came over and wrapped his arms around her.
Holly, Scarlett, Donna, and the Doctor step outside the TARDIS after their eight hours of sleep. Holly woke up with dried tears on her face, which the Doctor had cleared off for her after she turned to face him while on the bed. They didn't talk about what had happened like Scarlett had hoped.
"So," Holly leaned in, talking to Scarlett, "was this an episode?"
"Yup!"
"You still have to explain what she means by 'episode,'" Donna states. "As far as I know I'm not on the Truman Show."
Holly and Scarlett share a look.
"Anyway..." the Doctor says after giving a side glance to Scarlett and Holly, "Ancient Rome! Well, not for them, obviously. To all intents and purposes, right now, this is brand new Rome."
"Oh, my God. it's – it's so Roman. This is fantastic."
The Doctor laughs as he pulls Holly closer to him, after Donna had given him a hug. Her hearts flutter, she but she couldn't help but think it's weird being in Ancient Rome.
"I'm here, in Rome. Donna Noble in Rome. This is just weird. I mean, everyone here's dead."
"Well, don't tell them that," the Doctor says, which makes Scarlett laugh.
"We better get out before that happens," Holly tells the Doctor, nudging him.
"Don't want that to happen to you again," the Doctor agrees. Scarlett frowns.
"I feel really bad about that," she says, "though I've read some of what you wrote in your journal, Holly, it hasn't happened to me yet."
"Guys. Hold on a minute. That sign over there's in English," Donna points. Painted on the side of a barrow is two amphorae for the price of one.
"Are you having me on? Are we in Epcot? Scarlett, are we in Epcot?" Donna says in disbelief.
"You clearly haven't traveled in the TARDIS much. Didn't you travel in space with him before Holly arrived?"
Donna rolls her eyes.
"No, no, no, no. That's the TARDIS translation circuits. Just makes it look like English. Speech as well. You're talking Latin right now."
"Seriously?"
"Mmm," the Doctor says.
"I just said seriously in Latin."
"Oh, yeah," the Doctor says as he's watching Holly looking around too.
"I'm just glad I wasn't as bad as her when I first arrived."
"We didn't have enough time for you to process it. We went to the end of the universe for crying out loud," says the Doctor.
"Yeah, and then I regenerated, and then... Oh I don't want to talk about it."
Donna is completely ignoring their conversation, still stunned at the TARDIS's translation. "What if I said something in actual Latin, like veni, vidi, vici? My dad said that when he came back from football. If I said veni, vidi, vici to that lot, what would it sound like?"
"You're crazy Donna," Scarlett says. She leans in to Holly.
"You should've seen the episode where Rose and the Doctor went to Scotland. Now Donna isn't as bad as Rose was–"
Her whisper was cut off by the Doctor. Holly quickly tells Scarlett she saw that episode. Scarlett scoffs.
"I'm not sure. You have to think of difficult questions, don't you?"
"I'm going to try it." Holly and Scarlett watch as Donna goes to a fruit seller.
"Afternoon, sweetheart. What can I get you, my love?" the man says.
"Er, veni, vidi, vici."
"Huh? Sorry? Me no speak Celtic. No can do, missy."
"Yeah," Donna says, making Scarlett slap her forehead. She walks away.
"Doctor... I was wondering if I could just– Could I hear your Scottish accent? Like Holly's, but... you know." Scarlett asks the Doctor, smiling. He gives her a look before turning to Holly.
"What–"
"Just go with it, Doctor. Or she'll just keep asking you until you do it."
"Fine," he says in a Scottish accent. It sounded completely natural which made Holly's eyebrows raise, "Why would you want me to do that?"
"That was amazing!" Donna says. "Have you been practicing?"
"No," says the Doctor. Holly smiles.
"Anyway," Donna says after a pause, "How's he mean, Celtic?"
"Welsh. You sound Welsh. There we are. Learnt something."
The Doctor grabs Holly's hand as they start leaving.
"Don't our clothes look a bit odd?"
Holly never realized that. Her wide eyes drift towards Scarlett as she shrugs.
"Nah. Ancient Rome, anything goes. It's like Soho, but bigger."
"You've been here before then?" Donna asks.
"Mmm. Ages ago. Before you ask, that fire had nothing to do with me. Well, a little bit. But I haven't got the chance to look around properly. Coliseum, Pantheon, Circus Maximus. You'd expect them to be looming by now. Where is everything? Try this way."
Holly looks at Scarlett again as they move faster. "I've never seen Classic Who," she whispers to her. Holly nods.
"Not an expert, but there's seven hills of Rome, aren't there? How come they've only got one?"
There was one big, bare-headed mountain. Then the ground shakes.
"Here we go again," a man says. Holly's anxiety sky-rockets. The vendors hang onto their stalls as pottery falls and breaks.
"Wait a minute. One mountain, with smoke. Which makes this–"
"Pompeii. We're in Pompeii. And it's volcano day."
Holly groans as her grip tightens on the Doctor's hand. Scarlett grabs Holly's other hand. They start running.
I just realized I can't have the darn copy and paste emojis I get from a website to make the story look pretty. So those plus signs were supposed to be flowers. Ugh.
Anyway, I apologize for not updating this story until now. I've been busy working on it and as of today I am working on the final (hopefully) part of the Sontaran Stratagem episode. I just wanted to let y'all know that I skipped Planet of the Ood. I barely remember anything from that episode anyway.
Thank you to those who have been reading this on this website! I see that some of you favorited it more than followed, and that means a lot!!! I hope you've been enjoying it. (I apologize again for the lack of updates on this website!)
Love,
Liv
