Anthony, Mac, and Bertram tested their equipment, making sure it was all tuned. They were going to have another sold-out concert and Mr. Gerent had been talking about taking them on the road. "Did you hear about John Lennon?" asked Bertram. "Reggie told me this morning. It's terrible."
"I did," replied Mac. "Apparently the guy confessed right after! But he doesn't know why he did it. I think he was Imperiused by You-Know-Who."
"Come off it," said Anthony. "You-Know-Who wouldn't be involved in something like that."
"You never know," said Mac. "John Lennon was all about peace and getting along, something You-Know-Who was never about."
"Can we drop it?" asked Bertram shortly. "Let's focus on our gig tonight. I was thinking we could do Imagine as a tribute to John Lennon tonight."
"That's a good idea," said Anthony.
"Speaking of this morning, that reminds me," said Mac. "Anthony you got a call from a Cynthia this morning."
"Cynthia C or Cynthia G?" asked Anthony.
"How should I know, I'm not your secretary!" retorted Mac.
"You're just jealous you don't have a girlfriend," Anthony replied.
"Just because I don't have a new girl every week, I want to be friends first, see how it goes, find the right person. But music is my life right now."
"Let's save that energy for the stage," broke in Mr. Gerent. "Showtime."
The house lights went down, the stage lights went up, and The Accountants played their first chord of the night. As they played, it seemed that they were directing the audience to gasp, cheer, and quietly contemplate. During "Imagine," there wasn't a dry eye in the house as everyone held up their lighters.
Their set ended with applause, but as the house lights came back up, Anthony started. There was a familiar face in the crowd. He'd had a few girlfriends, sure, but she didn't look like any of them. He stood up and nudged Mac, who was declining another number. "Hey Mac," Anthony asked him, pointing to the girl. "Does she look familiar to you? Did she go to Hogwarts?"
Mac looked up at the girl, halfway out the door by now. "No, I don't think so," he said.
"I know her…" said Anthony. He racked his memory and a vague dream came to him. Realization dawned as he recognized her face from it. Quickly, he shoved his way through the crowd, but she was gone.
"Did you find out who it was?" asked Mac.
"I dreamed about her," answered Anthony. "It's been a while since I had visions at all, but I remember her."
"Maybe she'll be back," asked Bertram, arm wrapped around Reggie.
"Maybe," Anthony said doubtfully.
But the mystery girl showed up to a few more concerts. He showed her to Mr. Gerent and asked him to put her in the front row next time.
The very next night, there was an empty seat in the front row. Anthony could barely focus on his playing until she slipped in late, then it took all his concentration.
Bertram caught Mac's eye, then looked back at Anthony and winked at him. "This next one goes out to all the ladies, but I think one special lady in particular for our drummer." He looked at the mystery girl and smiled as he and Mac launched into "Your Song." Anthony stuck his tongue out at him as he caught up.
"I can't believe you did that!" Anthony told Bertram and Mac at the end of the show. "What were you--oh." He stopped as he saw the girl shyly approach. She was dressed differently from the usual crowd, wearing a peasant blouse, flowy skirt, and crystals around her neck. His friends smiled and busied themselves with instruments just within earshot.
"Hi," Anthony told her.
"Hi," the girl said. "I wasn't going to come up, I kept seeing all the girls around, but then there was the front row and that song. It was really nice."
"Thanks," said Anthony, staring. "I like your crystals."
"Thanks. I'm Elena."
"A-Anthony. Um. But you know that already." He cleared his throat.
"Would you--" they said at the same time. "Oh.. Sorry.." They laughed nervously.
"Do you want to go get some coffee?" asked Anthony.
"I'd love to."
"Hey guys, can you--"
"Got it!" Bertram replied. "Have fun!" added Mac.
They talked late into the night. It turned out she was into the occult, at least as Muggles knew it.
"And it works, see," Elena was saying. "One of these crystals brings me luck and the drummer of a rock band asked me out! Have you heard of Life Paths?"
Anthony started. "You know about life paths?"
"Oh yes," Elena replied. "Numerology is a fascinating subject. You can figure out your entire life from your birthday! I've only just started looking into it, but it's very interesting what numbers can tell us. Yours, for example. What's your birthday?"
"My life path is a 3," said Anthony. "I study numbers too, but we called it Arithmancy where I'm from. I feel like I've known you my whole life. Would you believe me if I told you something?"
She looked into his eyes seriously. "I try to believe as many as 6 impossible things before breakfast. That's from Alice in Wonderland, one of my favorite books. But I really like to believe anything is possible."
"I've had visions," said Anthony. "Using numbers. I can create patterns and get glimpses of the future."
"That's amazing!" she gasped. "And it makes sense, there's a lot of blue in your aura, you're connected to the metaphysical world."
"So forgive me, but you don't seem the type to go to punk rock concerts."
"No offense at all. I try to go with the flow, be one with nature. But Nature has her hurricanes as well as her gentle rain."
They talked long into the night and when Anthony finally floated into the flat, it was morning, the previous evening feeling like a dream.
"How long do you think this one will last?" Mac teasingly asked Anthony at lunch.
"Oh be fair, it might last all of 3 days," Bertram broke in.
"This is different," Anthony insisted. "We didn't even kiss, just talked. She's into magic. She knows about Arithmancy, but she doesn't call it that."
"She's pretty at least," said Mac.
But the relationship lasted a week, then a month, then a year. Mac made frequent visits home in between gigs, to which the boys were always invited for a home cooked meal.
One day, Anthony took Elena out for a walk under the stars. He pointed up at the sky. "Hey look," he said. "Aren't those Vega and Altair?"
"Star-crossed lovers," she said, looking up. "The daughter of the Sky King and a simple herdsman, falling in love despite all odds."
When she looked back down, Anthony was on his knee with a simple diamond ring. "You are the girl of my dreams," he said. "I knew when I saw you we were destined to be together. I know we're from two different worlds and my family definitely wouldn't approve, but I want to spend the rest of my life with you."
She responded by kissing him. "Yes," she breathed. They embraced under the night sky, Vega and Altair watching over them.
