Much Needed Vacation

I will keep a running list of male to female names as characters are introduced at the end of each chapter.

Harry Potter had never been on a vacation, not a real one at least. Sure, he had gone to the World Cup with Ron and his family before his own fourth year, but that hardly counted and had ended up in the attacks and riots.
The Potters, apparently, often vacationed during the summers and while the previous year they had stayed at home to help him adjust, there had been an agreement that they all needed to get away after the previous school year.
Ideas had been discussed for the first few days of break until James had made the argument that they needed somewhere warm and sunny to chase away any lingering memories. Thus, the family decided upon the beach as a preferred location. Luckily, there were many such locations that were a short Portkey trip from their home.
Unlike many of the other Slytherin families, the Potters were able to blend in well enough with the Muggle population that they weren't forced into hidden Magical-only locales. Although they still chose a beach house rented specifically to witches and wizards, complete with a Floo and a lack of any Muggle technology that might be interrupted by their presence.
Still, the water nearby was used by Muggles and Magical wielders alike, and while the two sisters were warned about being cautious, Harry had no doubt of his own ability to remain inconspicuous. He had lived for years with Muggles, after all, and was probably the one most suited to blending in.
The sand was bright and warm, allowing all three of the children to enjoy being barefoot, while the water blue and inviting. Even with the other vacationers nearby there was a sense of calm and relaxation that accompanied the gentle splashing of the waves, the call of birds and a soft breeze that both warmed and cooled at the same time.
Amaryllis and her father, naturally, ran straight towards the ocean, laughing in excitement as they practically dove straight in. Lily and Harriet, in the meantime, began setting out beach towels, an oversized umbrella, and the cooler with drinks along with reading material.
As for Harry, he fought against the thoughts that he was intruding upon the family's private rituals and vacationing and instead sought to make himself useful by helping the two unpack. The warm, but understanding, smile on the older redhead's face told him all he needed to know regarding his plan. Lily knew what he was doing, and while she certainly didn't seem thrilled by it she didn't appear to be at the stage of confrontation.
When asked about what he wanted to do first he had merely shrugged in response. He had never been to the ocean before, and while he would certainly go swimming later for the time being he just wanted to take a second and relax.
After everything was setup, he lowered himself down onto the sand near his raven-haired sibling, who had opted to use a towel to stay clean instead, along with retrieving a book to read for leisure.
For the boy-who-lived, everything else faded into the background as he took in the scene before him. Despite everything that had happened, despite all the near-death experiences and trials he had already gone through he couldn't help but find it all worth it. He had a family, one who cared about him. He had friends, both the ones he remembered from his own timeline and new ones as well.
It was one of the few times he could remember feeling as though everything would be okay. There was no reason to dread the upcoming school year, there would be no escapee from Azkaban because there had been no war.
Sirius had never been imprisoned, there would be no one trying to hurt him or his family. First year had been inevitable, it was due to Dumbledore more than anything else if he thought about it, and the previous year a fluke. The Basilisk, after all, had been an established threat far before his arrival as had Riddle's own nemesis.
This time though it should be nice and peaceful.
He allowed this thought to sink into his mind, washing away all the worries and concerns that had been brewing in the back of his mind. His shoulders relaxed, and a tension he never noticed before easing away as retreating with the water itself, dragged back into the nearby waters.
"Harry, are you okay?"
He blinked, before glancing over to the raven-haired witch. Her book had been lowered; eyes focused on him with a hint of concern. Nearby, Lily was pretending to be more interested in other things but was failing in her nonchalance quite miserably.
The boy realized he must have been staring off into the distance for too long. "Yeah, I'm fine it's just a lot to take in, the ocean I mean. This is the first real vacation I've been on and even after almost two years this still feels… new."
"You should join them in the water soon." The older woman noted, "If you've never been to the beach before."
Harry nodded, already planning on doing so after he enjoyed the warm sand and cool breeze for just a while longer.

"Tell me about your aspirations for this coming school year." It was a mixture between pleasant conversation and a demand, both the woman's children knew better than to deny her 'request'.
The younger cleared her throat first, "I have been all but guaranteed a position on the Quidditch team mother, Seeker most likely. With this being my third year, I will also be enrolling in my electives."
Narcissa promptly frowned at her daughter's continued fascination with the sport but nodded before gesturing for the youngest to continue into her choices.
"I was planning to take Care of Magical Creatures along with Arithmancy."
That earned her a hiss of disapproval. "Politics is more useful than a worthless Creature class. You will take that instead."
The young blonde cast her eyes down at the table the four were eating at. "I just wanted to focus on Arithmancy is all and…"
"And it is not up for debate. You must be thinking of your future Cleopatra, not what is easy. Furthermore, I am hesitant to even allow you to engage in something as wasteful as Quidditch."
"It would be good for her mother." Pandora promptly interrupted, drawing the attention onto herself. "As you know Quidditch is not sorted by year. Cleo will meet older students and form bonds of camaraderie through the teamwork required."
The matron's gaze narrowed before she gave a reluctant nod, "So long as your grades do not diminish, I suppose it will be acceptable. Now then, what of you Pandora?"
Seeing the relief in her sister's eyes the older witch relaxed into her own 'report', "My academic work is of high marks as expected. I am continuing with my chosen electives and am within the top five of my year overall."
Narcissa nodded, "Since this will be your sixth year it will be time to take a more aggressive approach into future courtships and marriage. I will setup appointments with over major houses for further investigation into their sons."
"Completely unnecessary mother, I have already chosen the perfect husband."
Silence fell onto the table, with Lucius glancing towards his wife, who hard a sneer edging onto her face. "And who do you feel yourself able to endorse in such a way?"
"Harry of course."
"Potter!?" Cleo exclaimed, earning herself several glares for the outburst as she promptly sunk back into her chair.
Pandora, after her annoyance was known, nodded, "Yes, he's perfect and I have already begun sending him courtship gifts."
There was no hiding the rage in her mother's eyes or her tone, "The Potters are not even within our league! Especially not some useless abandoned child."
But her daughter merely met the anger with an icy gaze, "Harry is perfect. Above competent in all his classes, sorted into Slytherin, and is a dueling prodigy."
"Allegedly." Lucius intoned, voice devoid of emotion.
His daughter glanced his way without a hint of uncertainty, "Nonsense, Professor Riddle has taken him as an apprentice, she would not waste her time on someone unworthy. Besides there have been enough rumors from various sources to confirm his talents."
"Rumors are meaningless, we have heard the same."
Pandora, however, was ready, "The Minister would not have wasted her time on a photo shoot with someone who wasn't involved in the incident a year ago, and I have more than one colleague confirming his defeat over Delphini who we know would not have thrown a duel even with familial ties. Furthermore, there is the widely believed fact that he is a Parselmouth."
"A fact propagated by schoolchildren who had no visible confirmation." Narcissa growled, "Not evidence of anything. Besides, the Potter family has no history of the trait."
The older child stared back, "The Prophet, for all their faults, would not have printed such a thing without some sort of evidence, they would not risk such a blow to their reputation if it came back as a blatant lie. Perhaps it is an unknown trait from his mother's side, perhaps it is a random occurrence. Regardless, it makes him perfect, and I will continue my pursuit of him."
"And if we forbid it?"
The teen's eyes hardened, "You have little to no control over my actions at Hogwarts. If you intend on disowning me because of this course then so be it but we all know what such a thing will do to the Malfoy name, especially without just cause."
They did, both parents did. The abandonment of a child, especially male and without Magical potential, wasn't uncommon but to do so after so many years would have been a stain that no amount of gold could fix. The rumors would circulate, and the adults could do as many interviews and hold as many parties as they wanted but the doubt would always be there in the other families, in society.
"Do not worry mother, you will see the truth soon enough. Bit by bit Harry's magnificence has been exposed. It will not be long now until England sees his value, and then you will be praising my initiative in putting myself above any other suitors that will show interest.

Although she would never say it aloud, expecting only her sister and maybe Harry to understand through their own 'language', Harriet Potter was worried. She was, in general, a very worrying person. She worried about her family, about Amy playing Quidditch and getting hurt, that her grades weren't good enough, that her friends weren't only nice to her because of her sibling, that Harry's smiles were all faked and that deep down he was truly miserable.
Most of these, obviously, were completely unfounded, but she couldn't help it, she was a worrier. After the previous year she managed to add on several more topics onto her growing list. What if she hadn't been petrified, but instead killed? What if it had been Amy targeted and she hadn't been as lucky? What if Harry hadn't been victorious, and had ended up as a corpse, lying down in some awful place for the rest of time?
She had woken up in a cold sweat several times after her restoration, only to find Amaryllis practically wrapped around her, clearly afraid of something bad happening. It had only gotten worse after their first visit to the hospital ward and seeing Harry lying in bed, not petrified but so deathly pale and still.
What if he died because of her?
There had, naturally, been relief when he had been healed, and after their conversation she had felt better than before, comforted even if just slightly. Even with this there had been a nagging in the back of her mind, what if, even after everything went back to normal, she didn't? What if she was damaged? Something to be pitied year after year as the dark continued to haunt her mind.
Thus, she had been wary of a summer vacation. Because if she couldn't recover on a warm sunny beach then what chance did she have?
Those fears followed her all the way onto the warm sand, but then something happened. It was the way Harry looked out into the ocean, the way he seemed to relax, the way the tension drained from his body.
He had hope, hope that the other years were a fluke, hope that everything would be normal, that there was nothing more to worry about. Harry, who had been through so much, and undoubtedly more that they didn't even know about, was hopeful.
What excuse did she have?
Sure enough, his mere presence seemed to have an uplifting effect. And the fears were banished from her mind for the rest of the day and even into the evening where she slept soundly for possibly the first time since recovering.

Leaning back in her chair, the older witch rubbed at her eyes for a moment to give them a bit of rest. Seemingly endless paperwork and planning were certainly not what she had envisioned when becoming a professor, but like all careers it was one of the necessary evils that was required. A groan escaped her lips before Grace allowed her mind to wander the current obsession dominating her life.
Harry Potter
What a life he had already lived, and that was only including what she knew of the years he had spent in their world. First year had been a mess, no one denied that, and while the summer had been significantly easier the previous school year had been even worse.
The boy had gone from outdueling a thief to slaying a Basilisk. It was beyond unheard, it was unthinkable, nigh impossible. Even their own cover story, used to try and keep the poor child from being harassed by interested parties, the media, the Ministry, and Merilyn knew who else, was pushing what she would have considered 'believable'.
Two of the most powerful witches alive going up against a thousand-year-old monster? It was the stuff of fairy tales. Which made the actual truth that much more ridiculous. Even with his 'redo' of school and heightened knowledge and possibly power because of it the entire idea was absurd.
He would have been a seventh year, maybe. What seventh year student went about discovering The Chamber of Secrets and then fought not only a trained adult witch but also a creature as deadly as an ancient Basilisk?
She wasn't sure if Harry knew, much less understood, what he had done, that he was already the stuff of legend. Such a thought had her fearful, however. He was already leagues beyond his classmates, even those near full graduation. If he were of age, she had no doubt he would be accepted into the Aurors.
What if he became bored and stagnated? It certainly happened before. An overly talented individual emerged but was never challenged, never pushed to achieve higher levels, fizzling out over time, their true potential never realized.
Hadn't she suffered a similar fate? A genius duelist, star of the circuit, and she had chosen to become a teacher after rising to the top.
But why had it? Why had she opted to change her career path into something more academic focused? Had it been the long, lonely, trips with no one to talk to? Or was it making more rivals than friends? Perhaps it was just the constant travel, never settling down, never having a place to go and just relax, a place to call 'home'.
Was it any different now?
She shook her head, at least this coming year promised to be a calmer one. It would give her a chance to accurately judge Harry's skills and progress since the tutoring began, a chance to figure out how much he had grown, and how much he could grow if properly taught.
Perhaps she would even get to the more 'fun' spells during the summer, pique his interest and show him exactly what he would be learning beyond breathing and control exercises.
With the goals in mind, she returned to her previous activity with renewed vigor, knowing that the sooner she completed the lesson plans the sooner she would be able to move onto more interesting ones.

The redhead allowed herself to smile in between bites of food. When the topic of a family vacation had been brought up when they arrived home she had been concerned. What if her sister wasn't recovered enough to enjoy it? What if she needed help? What if her brother wasn't physically healed? What if he started having nightmares now that they were in an unfamiliar place?
Thus, she had paid extra attention to both, at least until she noticed the lack of fear in either of their eyes. Harriet had been reading books like normal, not staring at pages blankly but actually reading and going through them at her normal pace, and apart from a few 'staring off into the distance' moments, Harry looked okay as well.
He sat on the beach and enjoyed the warm sand, he splashed around in the ocean, he laughed and joked. The only remaining two 'tests' were their eating habits, which she had seen were normal as indicated in the past few minutes of a family dinner, and how well they would sleep at night.
That last assessment would be one of the more important ones. She knew that Harriet hadn't been sleeping well since recovering from her petrification, and while there hadn't been any late-night screams, she was aware of the occasional tossing and turning that was far from normal for the raven-haired witch.
As for Harry, what was his normal nighttime routine? She knew that he was a light sleeper, and an early riser, but other than that most of it was unknown.
Still, she watched him take another bite of his sandwich while smiling warmly at something their parents had said, Amaryllis had hope. Things would be different from then on, easier, safer. And if she used the previous two years as an excuse to guilt trip her mom into doing some defense training of her own, well then sometimes things just happened.
***HP:O ***
There was nothing quite like a sunrise on the beach, and while the water was technically in the opposite direction Harry found himself up and sneaking out of the cottage early enough to enjoy the peace and quiet anyway. There was something about the morning air, the cool ocean breeze, the first rays of light peeking up over the landscape.
It served to wash away any anxieties that might have been building up, cleanse him of any uncertainties he had pertaining to the previous, and upcoming, years.
At that moment life was simple and peaceful, it was so easy to just let go and allow himself to believe that everything would be okay, that there wouldn't be any further problems or trials, that this was his family, that his life could be what he had always dreamed of.
Harry had been deep enough into the fantasy that he didn't even notice James' approach until the man gently called out to him. He spun in place, hand reaching for a Wand that he hadn't brought, hadn't even thought of bringing.
Strange, how a few days into summer had cause his guard to relax to such an extent.
"Everything okay?" the man inquired, clearly noticing the boy's twitching fingers and change in demeanor.
"Yeah! Yeah, everything's fine I just… wanted to wake up early and enjoy the sunrise is all."
James Potter nodded slowly, before letting out a sigh, "It is very pretty in the morning, isn't it? Planning on coming into the water again today?" The younger wizard nodded almost automatically, barely paying attention to the question as he closed his eyes and enjoy a cool gust of wind. "We were worried you know, your mom and I about not just the girls but you as well. This past year… this had really been hard for everyone, really made us question whether keeping you three at Hogwarts is a good decision. I mean, this is the second year something dangerous had occurred, something that you were directly involved in."
For his part Harry agreed but did so with a shrug. There really wasn't any thought of not going back to Hogwarts. Even when he had been targeted by a literal sociopathic Dark Lord, he went back each time.
His friends were there, and back then they were all he had; Magic was all he had. Without it he was just some useless brat to be discarded or ignored. Being a wizard was the first thing he had ever been good at, the first thing he ever enjoyed.
The day he met Hagrid was the day his life had begun.
"I think everything will be fine from here out." he answered, the certainty in his voice masking any hidden doubts. "Not like anyone is going to break out of Azkaban and come after us."
James looked horrified for a moment as Harry rolled his eyes, "Unless Sirius gets arrested between now and September then stages an escape all to say 'hello'. Of course, all considering I wouldn't put it past him."
The man snorted, before laughter overtook him and echoed through the morning air. It took him several minutes to calm down before redirecting his full, still grinning, attention towards the younger person. "You aren't worried? We would understand if you were, hell we are worried and we aren't going to Hogwarts anymore."
Again, another shrug, "I've been worried most of my life, hasn't stopped me yet. If I turned around or gave up anytime something was difficult or dangerous… well, I wouldn't have gotten very far."
"Are you going to tell us? About everything from your other life, I mean. Your mom and I… well we are both terrified and desperate to know more."
The boy-who-lived hesitated, "Dumbledore said…"
"To hell with what Dumbledore said, she isn't your parent or guardian."
James was right, but still Harry didn't like the idea of being entirely honest, at least not yet. There was still the concern that things might change for the worse, or that the two adults might act responsibly and freak out, pulling all three of them from school.
Regardless of what happened to him, they needed the education, and the friendship, offered by the school.
"Maybe after fifth year, once I know we aren't going to break anything or accidentally get Sirius turned into a woman or something."
Once more James grinned before laughing, and this time Harry joined him.
***HP:O ***
It was a question she had been dreading, a conversation she had hoped to never have, never need to have with her son. But then again, hadn't the past two school years already been full of moments of dread that she never could have imagined?
Still, the look on her husband's face told her everything she needed to know. They couldn't put it off any longer and no matter what the consequences would be, Harry deserved to know what to be careful of, what society had become so nonchalant about thinking towards him and other men.
"Why don't you have a seat?" She requested, before taking one herself, James ever the thoughtful one immediately began heating up water in preparation for tea. "It's a… complicated question, and one that requires a bit of a history lesson to truly understand."
The older wizard snorted from nearby, earning him a sharp glance as he muttered out his own response, "Oh yes, because that's what will make this better."
Harry looked concerned, more than he did a few minutes prior, and Lily let out a sigh before continuing. "Those terms… 'donor' and 'breeder' originated a very long time ago, back before James and I attended Hogwarts, maybe even before Dumbledore went to school. Back then Hogwarts was just for witches, the little 'formal education' given to men was…" she trailed off, before the other adult in the room chimed in.
"I would say it was lacking Harry, but that would be kinder than deserved. Most were taught at home, a few of the richer 'higher ups' in society such as those who would be bartered off in arranged marriages would be allowed to attend specialized 'domestic schooling'. These taught boys to be 'proper', things like raising children, house duties, 'caring' for their spouses, things like that."
The boy nodded slowly in understanding, an obvious frown upon his face. Lily took up the conversation, to steer it back onto the original topic. "It was from this time, from these awful mindsets, that those two terms originate from. Men weren't just treated as second-class citizens; they were seen more like property or chess pieces. Arranged marriages, especially in the upper echelons of society, weren't just common they were expected. The problem remained the disparity in numbers, and it was this gap that created these roles."
James cleared his throat as he sat down with three steaming cups, passing the other two towards those already seated, "The biggest distinction is probably the status of the one involved. A 'donor' is usually of a higher social class. Sirius would have been one way back when…" he trailed off, possibly thinking about whether to admit it might still apply, but ended up shaking his head, "Anyway, for this a contract is written up and formalized that establishes the creation of a child for whatever the wizard's family negotiates for."
Harry Potter stared in disbelief, and the man flinched.
Lily took a steadying breath before explaining the rest, "As for 'breeders', well it is probably as bad as it sounds. There aren't any contracts involved for this, it is an individual that is seen as useful for creating children and nothing else, regardless of their own desires or consent."
"So, they are raped." The redhead flinched, and James found his own cup far more interesting to look at than the disappointment in the child's face. "Why isn't anyone doing anything about this? Why doesn't Dumbledore… or McGonagall… why was Snape allowed to become a professor after trying it!?"
She didn't have an answer for him, at least not a complete one. "Because those old habits never seem to die. Regardless of how far we've come, regardless of the bits of equality we have forced through in both the Wizengamot and the hearts and minds of the people there is still those lingering biases and traditions that those in power cling to. Some are still convinced, despite how utterly absurd, that the old ways are still the best."
"And boys should just smile and let it happen."
Her husband sighed, "Things are getting better Harry, I know it doesn't sound like it, I know there are still problems and inequalities in the world, but we are on the right track."
Their son nodded, but it looked more like one of understanding than agreement, "Maybe in a few more generations things will be okay."
***HP:O ***
"I trust your vacation went well."
There was a hint of something in her tone. Whether it was curiosity, annoyance, even jealously he wasn't quite sure but refused to take the bait and start an argument with the older woman. "It was nice."
Riddle's lip twitched, the only sign she would allow of the frown she forced to remain hidden. "Good, because now that our lessons are able to resume, we have quite a bit to catch up on."
His form became set with determination, "Where do we start?"
Grace returned a curt nod, "We will begin with the spells and techniques you used in the Chamber." She had meant it partially as a test, to see if there was a wince, a moment of hesitation, fear, uncertainty, anything of the like in his eyes or posture.
The woman wasn't sure if she was pleased or concerned to find none.
"I used Fulmen against your ex." Okay that earned him a flinch and one she probably deserved all considering. "As for the Basilisk itself, Ardenti Lux to burn out its eyes then I just pushed as much Magic into a blasting curse as possible, waited for it to open its mouth and… well boom."
He earned a stare for his nonchalance, "and boom…"
"Yep"
"That was your strategy? Wait for it to open its mouth and hope you could blow it up before it killed you?" Her tone was flat, and while he knew she was pissed he refused to back down or avert his gaze. What the hell did she want from him anyway? A complex battle tactic?
So, he crossed his arms and returned a glare, "Yeah, that was my strategy. What, did you have a better one?"
The twitch in her face was far more noticeable following his retort, "Yes" she seethed, "I'm sure I could think of one far more usable than 'charge in and blindly hope I don't end up as a corpse."
"Well good for fucking you. The problem was you weren't around, neither was Dumbledore."
"And the Aurors? Hell, why not just open the Chamber and let Snape go down and fight the damned thing!"
Harry practically snarled in response, "And if she died? 'Oh, that's okay Harry, just ignore the corpses we are hauling out of the Chamber, wasn't your fault.' I don't need any more blood on my hands, thanks very much."
"Oh yes, I'm sure it would be much easier to tell your family that you died because all of the adults were 'busy' at the time. I'm sure your sisters would take it especially well, Harriet wouldn't have blamed herself at all."
The Potter looked away, not wanting to go down that train of thought. "Well, it all worked out in the end didn't it…"
This time it was the woman who scowled, fierce and awful, "Do not do something so stupid again, do you understand me? Apprehending the thief was bad enough but this was damn well suicidal."
His gaze snapped back to the woman, "Then next time include me in the conversation, especially if I am one of the only two people who can open the damn door."
Their gazes met, neither wavering, before they sighed in unison. "We will need to work on that agreement, but I understand your logic, even if it was flawed and wrong. Regardless I believe this is a good enough excuse to escalate your training. Clearly, you are ready for more advanced work and perhaps if I work you to exhaustion then you won't have time to get into any further trouble."
His grin was cheeky, and her own lips twitched with the refusal to allow herself such a smile, "You know me professor."
***HP:O ***
Between Riddle's occasional lessons, summer homework, their short vacation getaway, and just some peaceful relaxation the summer seemed to pass in a blur. Before any of them knew it July had come and nearly gone, meaning it was time for their birthday party.
At times Harry felt he would never get used to such a thing. Seeing Sirius, his parents and sisters, a cousin he never had in the previous world, and a gathering of friends was almost too good to be true.
There was laughter and cake, Luna with her typical oddness, and Ginny accidentally putting her elbow into a piece of dessert. Sirius pulled a mild prank, resulting in glitter covering everyone and everything, earning him a growl from Lily and an impromptu chase around the house by her husband. The children, on the other hand, laughed while Hermione began picking the tiny bits out of her hair.
Shortly after gifts began to be ripped open and while Harriet had clearly received a larger number of them, mostly books and other study tools, it was Amy's which earned James another glare from his wife.
"I thought we agreed not to buy her a broom every year" the woman hissed as the Weasleys crowded around the other redhead and her new Nimbus 2001.
The man's attention, however, was primarily on his daughter currently hopping around in excitement. "Oh come on Lily it wasn't that much, plus it isn't even the newest broom."
That comment earned him a much harder glare followed by her response, "And we are not buying her that. I don't care if she sets this one on fire. No new brooms for at least a few years, do you understand?"
Glancing over, and seeing the look in her eyes, the man flinched before quickly nodding, "Yeah, yep of course no new brooms for at least two or three years, and then we talk about it first."
"Bloody right we will…"
For Harry, he received much of the same as the previous year. Trinkets and books of various qualities and a more advanced elemental study guide sent via mail from his personal instructor, it even included handwritten notes in the margins.
They had nearly finished with the unwrapping when Lily picked up on package that had arrived via mail and paused with a frown on her face.
"Harry… why is Pandora Malfoy sending you mail?"
