Heroes of the Next Generation

Chapter 4: Shifter, Festus and Sunray

"Mamma," Nico dodged and wiggled his nose. "Please. Stop. You're smothering me."

"Ah, shush," Maria grasped his face and peppered kisses all over his cheeks and nose. "You are my bambino, my only son, you will always be my baby!"

More kisses were applied to Nico and he submitted himself to that fate. His father, standing next to his mom, just smirked knowingly. Maria di Angelo was a force best not challenged. Once she finally deemed it enough (at least for now), Maria let go of her son, so Hades could also hug him.

"We've been following you and Percy on the news," Hades smiled proudly, motioning at the wall.

There hung a framed newspaper article, from when the Golden Gate Bridge had nearly collapsed after a villain attack and him and Percy had helped Theseus save everyone still stuck on it. Theseus was posing in front of the bridge, a smile on his lips and one arm around each of them.

"That's... kinda embarrassing," Nico flushed. "You don't have to frame that."

"Oh, nonsense! Of course we do!" Maria glared at him. "We're so proud of you, sweetie."

And the kisses started again. Nico heaved a sigh. Not that he hadn't missed his parents too, but the amount of love and affection were a tiny bit... smothering. Really. Oh well, he did have a lot to catch up on with them and he'd only be staying for a short time in New York, after all.

"How dare you grow this tall while I'm not here. It should be illegal for younger siblings to be taller than their older siblings, that is just rude and uncalled for."

Percy crossed his arms and glared up at Tyson. At fifteen, Tyson stood a whole two inches taller than Percy. Two inches. That was so rude of him. His little brother ought to be shorter than him! Percy could still remember little Ty, easy to be carried around by Percy. Tyson laughed and wrapped his arms around Percy to hug him tightly and lift him up off the ground.

"I'm gonna go to Chiron High, just like you, and I'll become a super strong hero. Just like you."

Percy's lower lip quivered a a little at that and he wrapped his arms tightly around his baby brother. Ty really had grown up – not just in height. He was a whole teenager now.

"I'm so glad you decided to stay a while after the wedding," Sally smiled as she finally got a chance to hug her son. "Oh, Juniper was such a lovely bride."

"Yeah. She really was," Percy also smiled, leaning against her. "Ah. Mom-hugs. I missed mom-hugs. Definitely need more of those to recharge before returning home."

Home. Huh. That was strange, calling a different place home while standing in his parents' house. But living with Jason and Nico, the home they had made together? It was home, it really was.

"Your brother is going to join us for dinner," Paul said. "He's looking forward to seeing you too, even though he will not admit that out loud."

Or course he wouldn't. Percy grinned a little. He was even looking forward to seeing Triton again.

Nico thought he got coddled as a kid, but with both his sisters having moved out and him visiting their parents, Hades and Persephone channeled all of their love and energy into him. It was... It was nice. It was also a little suffocating though, so Nico found himself fleeing to his best friends.

"This is... good. This is really good," Nico stared in surprise.

"Can you not say that so surprised?" Leo laughed and kicked him under the table. "My boyfriend is super talented, you know. He really took this seriously."

Frank had become a cook at a restaurant. Sure, he'd always cooked well, but well enough to sell? And apparently – according to Leo – Frank was very happy with it too. Which was nice. Nico was glad his friend had made something of himself, something that made him happy.

"I come here a lot," Will said. "Most the time I don't have the energy to cook when I get back from med school. It's so draining. Having someone cook for me is great."

"Which, I try. But I also work," offered Jake amused.

He turned to look at Will and it was with so much love. Made Nico smile a little. Those two were going strong, still. Even with Will going to med school, wanting to become a doctor, and Jake working as a mechanic at Esperanza Valdez' garage.

"What about you, Leo?" Nico asked, taking another bite. "What do you do these days?"

"We—ell, I actually... I got into BD Gadgets. I'm still a trainee, learning and stuff, but yeah."

Leo grinned so sheepishly in an adorable manner, ducking his head. BD Gadgets, Beckendorf's dad's business. The kind of asset that Percy was definitely looking for with the new Olympians. An inventor, someone able to fix everyone's gadgets and develop new weapons and aids.

"Thank you so much for having me, Sally."

Jason smiled brightly at her while handing her a mug of coffee. Both his boyfriends had family in New York, but Jason didn't. So he decided to stay half his time with the Jacksons and half his time with the di Angelos. Snuggling up with Percy in his childhood bed was kind of unusual, but it was nice to wake up and spend time with the Jacksons during normal activities like breakfast, movie nights. Helping Tyson with his homework. This was the kind of family day to day that Jason had always dreamed of. Even with Tristan and Beryl, he never quite got that, because even with their love, they were still rich and busy and things were different.

"Oh, of course, sweetheart. You're practically family."

Sally Jackson had this air about her, this motherly warm that lulled one in. Jason loved that. Like the direct opposite of Hera Grace. Jason found himself soaking up as much of that warmth as he could. He smiled at her and went ahead to make breakfast.

"Oh, you really don't have to do that, Jason. You're our guest."

"No. No, I want to," Jason smiled at her. "It's good. I make breakfast for my boys all the time."

"Your boys, huh," Sally chuckled softly. "How are things going, with the three of you living together now? I know that dating and moving in together are very different experiences."

Jason grunted at that and then flipped a pancake. "Let's say loving them a lot helps a lot with the living together part. They drive me up the wall all the time."

I can believe that," Sally tilted her head. "When Paul and I first moved together, oh, it was such a chaos. Two water-controller living together? We fought over the bathroom a lot. And working together on Olympus, then coming home, living together... It was a lot."

"I feel like Nico and Perce are currently facing that problem," Jason heaved a sigh. "They are both so... thick-headed. They argue at work and then bring it home and I have enough to deal with with my school and education too, you know? I can't listen to that all the time and—And I should probably not complain about this to you. You're Percy's mom."

Sally laughed and made a dismissive hand-gesture. "No. Sometimes we need to vent. I love Percy, but I do know that he can be very, very stubborn. He takes after his father that way."

Jason choked out a laugh at that, shaking his head in amusement. "Yeah, I can see that."

Sally hummed amused, smiling at him from her place at the kitchen table. "You love them a great deal. In my own experience, that's what matters most. If you love someone enough, you will be invested enough to find solutions. Sometimes, problems might be too big and not even love can get you through them. But... it helps, it helps you want to fight for what matters most."

"We had a tiny little maybe fight, when I invited Piper to stay with us without telling them, and Nico, at the same time, invited Reyna to stay with us. And... I get it," Jason sighed. "We bot acted on impulse, still used to being responsible for ourselves. Taught me a lesson. Gotta... Gotta communicate with them. It's no longer just my life. It's ours."

"Yes," the smile on Sally's lips turned warmer. "Yes, it is."

Frank had never entirely known what he wanted. He wanted to be a hero, together with Will and Nico. That had been the dream back in the day. But going to hero school, actually... fighting, earning the bruises, seeing how it was to help people, but also the downside. After graduation, Frank wasn't entirely sure what he wanted with his life anymore. He'd started as a dish-washer at the restaurant, doing deliveries, then helping out in the kitchen. In the end, the chef saw a potential in him and took him under his wing, teaching him how to cook. Frank loved it.

And then Leo finally got into BD Gadget and... seeing the sparkle in his boyfriend's eyes, his enthusiasm for the inventions. That was so... inspirational to Frank? It made him remember the positive about hero training, the dream he used to have.

"You know you don't have to choose one for the rest of your life, right, kiddo?"

Frank startled and looked up from where he was petting Festus. Which was weird, because that was a metal dragon, but he was so life-like, Frank felt the need to pet him. Esperanza was leaning against a car, watching him, an enigmatic smile on her lips.

"I know that look on your face," Esperanza chuckled. "Had the same one myself at one point, you know. When you're still young and have to decide what to do with your life and it feels like you have to make a choice, right now, and you will be stuck in it for the rest of your life. But you don't. That's the secret that nobody tells you. You can reinvent yourself however often you want."

"...Yeah?" Frank looked at her hopefully. "I just... I like being a cook. But I think I might like being a hero too, with the right people. And I don't know... which I'd like more."

"And that's okay, kiddo," Esperanza smiled. "Take your time. Try things out. And it's completely okay to realize you don't like it anymore, or that you want to try something different instead."

"Thanks," Frank heaved a little sigh. "You're amazing."

Esperanza walked over to him to wrap an arm around him and ruffle his hair. "You're too. And you're practically my kid at this point, Frank. You spend so much time here. With my son."

Frank flushed, but he knew she was right. It was so easy to be a part of the Valdez family. He really did spend most of his time with Esperanza and Leo at this point. Having lost his own mom, his boyfriend's mom kind of filled that hole in his life? Because she was amazing, she really was.

"What's this? Hugs and cuddles? I want in on that!"

They both turned toward Leo and opened their arms for him to happily latch onto them both. Frank nuzzled against Leo's cheek, pressing a kiss against it. And then he caught sight of the clock. And oh. He was so running late. He had plans with Nico and Will tonight.

"Ah, crap. I gotta get going. And you're sure you don't want to come along?"

"Nah," Leo smiled and shook his head. "Go hang out with your friends without your boyfriends. I get it, some time you need to be with friends and not have everyone's partners with. Jake and I are gonna make a night out of it, work on the bike together."

Frank grunted and kissed Leo again. "Okay. Perfect. Have fu—un."

Will was securing himself a proper career. In the back of his mind, he never shook the plans him, Frank and Nico had come up with as kids. But he wanted a full education. He wanted to be a healer for his team, a proper doctor. So, med school. Exhausting, soul-sucking med-school.

"It's so exhausting," Will sighed, resting his forehead against Nico's shoulder.

"It's med-school," Nico raised one eyebrow. "It being exhausting is like, the only thing I know about it. That and having to memorize ridiculous names for body-parts no one ever talks about."

"Sure," Will slapped Nico's chest. "But you have no idea how exhausting it is. It's so much more exhausting than anyone tells you about. I'm actually dead on my feet."

Nico patted Will's head. "There, there. Frank brought pizza. Eat something."

Will grunted and reached out to grab a slice of pizza. Frank chuckled as he watched them. Being with them had always made him feel better about himself, because they were the same. They were all torn between the things they liked and wanted.

"How's working with Theseus? I mean, the Theseus?" Frank asked.

"He's so pretty," Nico blinked and shook his head. "Sorry. Just. It's a little distracting at times. Not like I'm, you know, totally into him. But damn, he's pretty. He reminds me so much of Percy, you know? Not just because of the distractingly pretty, but also... he's a hero who takes charge and knows what he wants and saves people with a smile."

Will raised one eyebrow. "So—o, the right kind of mentor for Percy, then?"

"Absolutely," Nico chuckled. "And, I'm happy too, most of the time. Just, sometimes, Perce and I edge on at work? But it's okay. We are... actually working out how to work together as equals."

"Yeah? That's good then," Frank smiled. "What about Jason? He done with school yet?"

"About to enter his final year after the summer," Nico looked so proud. "And he still loves it, a lot. But it's sometimes... I think sometimes he feels left out, because Perce and I share these experiences at work, this career goal, while he is doing something completely different that Percy and I don't exactly relate to or fully understand how it all goes, even though we both support him."

"Guess it's the imbalance that's a problem," Will hummed to himself. "It's easier when it's either or. Either you and your partner work together. Or you and your partner lead separate lives at work. But having both makes it more complicated, I suppose."

"Joys of polyamory," Nico chuckled. "But we'll navigate it. We always do."

"Yeah, you do," Frank grinned and fist-bumped Nico.

/break\

Nico was kissing up Jason's spine, earning him cute little gasps. Gasps that caused Nico to wrap a hand around Jason's mouth, because the last thing Nico needed was for his parents to walk in on him with Jason. Having Jason stay with him for a couple days obviously meant that Nico wanted to kiss him and do other stuff. Right now, he wanted to do so much more.

"Quiet," Nico whispered. "Can you stay quiet?"

Jason looked contemplative and then he shook his head. Nico could see the mischief sparkle in Jason's eyes as the blonde licked Nico's palm. Damn his boyfriends, they were both such teases. Nico glared at the back of Jason's neck and slipped one hand down to cup Jason's ass. His fingers slipped between the inviting cheeks, teasing Jason back. When Jason whined, Nico gave in and slipped two fingers in. The blonde bucked back against him and kept moaning.

"Quiet," Nico hissed and bit Jason's shoulder. "Behave, or we can't have fun."

He could feel the pouty glare. So cute. Urgh. Nico was way too weak for his cute boyfriends. He kept pumping his fingers in and out, pulling them apart and loosening Jason up. Until even Nico's patience wore thing and he pulled out, instead grasping Jason by his hips. He was careful, easing his way into his lover. Thunder startled him, causing him to jump a little.

"...When I said quiet, I also implied with your powers, Pikachu."

Jason elbowed him for that one, but it was worth it. Though it figured, ever since he had gone to acting school, Jason was no longer actively schooling his powers and control of them. Nico hid his smirk against Jason's neck when he started thrusting slow and deep. With one hand against the wall, Jason reached down to jerk himself off in the same rhythm as Nico thrust into him. The more often Nico hit Jason's prostate, the closer the blonde got. He rubbed the head of his cock, until it was enough to make him come hard into his own hand. When he tightened around Nico, his boyfriend thrust harder, picking the pace up even more, until he also came.

Panting hard, Nico leaned his forehead against Jason's shoulder to catch his breath. Jason leaned back against him, closing his eyes in bliss. At first, it had been weird to Jason whenever he had sex with only one of his boyfriends, but the longer they were together, the more natural it felt even just being with one of them. Because they trusted each other and knew that they weren't being excluded.

"I do like this place," Jason commented, staring up at the ceiling. "It's fancy but not like, dad's style kinda fancy. But old-fashioned, sophisticated?"

"That's all mamma's taste," Nico chuckled softly.

"You didn't inherit that taste, huh?" Jason frowned. "Because our place right now is less... a style, and more like 'three bombs hit the place and exploded with nerd shit'."

Nico huffed and smacked his flank lightly. "At least you admit to being one of those bombs."

"All three of us suck," Jason grinned broadly.

/break\

"You think that's stupid? Because honestly, I think it's kinda stupid, right?"

Leo was sitting upside-down, head hanging over the edge of Percy's bed. Percy was just staring at him. And then he started shaking his head wildly.

"What, no that's super cool. And also kinda cute," Percy grinned. "Festus is the perfect hero name for you. You are totally a happy dragon, just like your Festus."

"And you don't think it's stupid, since Festus is already named Festus?"

"Nah," Percy shrugged. "I think it's cool. It works well for you."

That made Leo perk up a little. "Thanks. I needed the feedback. I just, I'm not really... sure about a lot of stuff, you know? I know I love inventing and tinkering, but I also know I want to fight."

"You better," Percy grinned and nudged him. "I am counting on you for my team."

"So—o, that's still a thing, huh?" Leo returned his grin. "Not feeling so happy with Theseus that you want to stay with their agency for good instead of having to take all the responsibility of leadership your self and the burden of Olympus' legacy?"

"I mean, you're right, that is a lot of pressure. But... Yeah. Yeah, I do want that. I want to carry that legacy. But yeah, I do like being with Theseus, he's a great teacher," for a moment, Percy paused. "But when the time comes and I'm doing that... would you be on board?"

Leo sat up and held his fist out for Percy. "Of course, man."

Percy hit Leo's with his own, grinning to himself. One day, they were going to work together.

/break\

"Home, sweet home," Percy heaved a sigh and tilted his head back. "I mean, I loved spending time with my family again, but... feels like being a kid again, living with mom and dad?"

"Agreed," Nico grunted and wrapped one arm around Percy's waist.

Jason, on Percy's other side, leaned against his boyfriend, relaxing for a moment too. It would definitely be nice to sleep in their own bed again, with all three of them together.

Author's note: Next chapter is going to be the last one to catch us up on the others, featuring Octavian/Luke and Rachel and after that, we're going to form the Olympians ;)
