Mayumi opened the dusty journal again, trying to find if there is anything else that was missed. Each night she would flip through the pages over and over again, familiarizing the contents with the help of a dim candle fire.
If her mother is indeed the 'supervisor' mentioned within the entries, what could this mean for the future? She wondered if her father is aware of this part of the history. Perhaps he wasn't even there to witness it. Nonetheless, one cannot help but wonder about the true nature of the village matron. Is there something else that Akahana is hiding?
The events described in the entries are also very concerning. It escalated to the point that members of her own people actually turned against one another, bearing malice towards family and fellow villagers. It's rather saddening to know that the people of Kyoshi Island must endure this troubling moment.
Reading this journal also helped her recognize the pervasive nature of these acolytes. The cult intends to consolidate others into their rank, preaching their spiritual ideals upon all people. But the Acolytes of San Bao as a whole does not respect beliefs of others. By practicing an absolutist view of the world, their concept of good and evil have been greatly influenced by the spiritual leader. There is a clear antagonism towards the Avatar, perceiving them as 'weak' and 'evil'. One of their goals are to recognize their 'Master' as superior to the Avatar, venerating their spirituel leader above all else and perceiving all 'goodness' as products from him. By firmly believing that their cause is righteous and flawless, it encourages believers to spread across the world and propagate their way onto others.
The greatest obstacle in their goal is that majority of the world heavily venerates the Avatar. Even Earth Kingdom folk religion, which often involves offering food to certain spirits or legendary humans, the Avatar is heavily embedded into the people's hearts and minds. Regardless, every acolyte perceives other spirituality as false, therefore viewing their own unwanted intrusions as justified. All in the name of achieving conversions amongst the local population, turning them from the belief which their ancestors have been practicing to the new one. With the native people being initiated as new acolytes, this easily creates friction with those who still have not submitted. Tension will inevitably transform to conflict, all because those new converts aim to eradicate the local belief and intimate their whole people into believing this elusive yet powerful man.
In one of these entries, Mayumi noticed the mention of the so-called 'Sun Warriors'. She has no clue on who those people may be, only understand that they inhabit the Fire Nation. Like every other people on this world, they too are targeted by the acolytes as potential subjects to be converted. The Acolytes of San Bao thirsts for new members, and that desire cannot be quenched. Glory can be found in bringing distant and exotic people into their fold.
They would stop at nothing to ensure that the 'Eternal Balance' is upheld. But there is also a prophetic nature of these zealots, which is a core component in their religion. This 'Master' figure, ever so venerated, might intend to displace the Avatar and usurp its place as an important figure of the world. Since before history is even written, the Avatar played a vital role in maintaining balance, reincarnating again in accordance with the cycle of the four nations. She realized this animosity towards the Avatar is linked to this wish for usurpation. Since the Avatar is still currently not found, this further emboldened them to view the 'Eternal Balance' as true.
"What if this truly is the end?" Mayumi feared for the worst. Words circulate around the world that with the death of previous Avatar, there might not even be another one. This particular topic occasionally rears its head in Grandma Jin's restaurant, where soldiers would sometimes discuss about how the last reincarnate was killed. Whenever they progressed to the topic on who committed the deed, loud hushes would demand younger troops to not foolishly utter his name. Thus, preventing bad luck. And the fact that another Avatar incarnate has still not been found is a terrible sign, especially since the various states are constantly embroiling themselves into endless bloodbaths. Many feared for the worst that the Avatar may be no more.
If that truly is the case, then the foreseeable future will surely not be pleasant.
She left out a long and tired breath. Stay up late is certainly poor for her health.
The candle fire flickered slightly. Her own breathing has definitely facilitated its movement. Yet, this moment has been interrupted.
The sound of fire becomes louder, her hand reached for the sheathed dao and marched the door. Upon entering the courtyard, light is viable from the kitchen section. Smell of tea permeates the atmosphere. Based on the aroma, it's likely black tea. Perhaps Shan is just helping himself during another one of his late-night studying. That scholar is often too enveloped in perfecting calligraphy, trying to improve onto what may seemingly be a flawless artwork.
But something isn't right here. She saw the shadow of a man sitting still in the northern chamber. Silhouette remains in a seated position near the desk, head looking downward. He is likely reading or working on another commissioned work.
Then who is in the kitchen?
Her hand gripped the sword as the sound of footsteps became louder. She instantly slides it out and hold the blade close to intruder's neck.
"You got the nerve to come here," she warned the Dai Li with a furious glare. It's astounding by how casual this official is conducting himself. Using the estate's kitchen while Shan is still awake, such overconfidence is rather foolish.
But it's also rather surprising. Dai Li agents would never reveal themselves unless under special circumstances. She examined his facial features, which is masterfully obscured by the elaborate opera face paint. Quickly glancing at Shan's room, the scholar's silhouette is still there.
"Get out of here before he notices," Mayumi threatened.
The man in face paint was unfazed. He walked around the blade, placing the tray of tea upon the stone table. After pouring one of the cups, he savored the tea. All of this irritates Mayumi.
"Considering that the scholar inside this place do not usually sleep well, I doubt there is much problem." He glanced at Shan's room. "The conversation would not disturb him. I am sure he will understand my presence."
Mayumi fumed. He knew this isn't about disturbing the scholar. If Shan saw a Dai Li agent inside his courtyard, she couldn't even imagine the consequences. Even worse, being seen standing next to a cultural guardian presents its own major problems. It could even endanger her place in this city.
"We can reconvene in a different location," Mayumi proposed rationally. It is more pragmatic to not talk right here. Clearly, he has arrived to discuss certain issues that would be sensitive to the public.
"No, I think this place is just fine," the inquisitor ignored her suggestion. "Besides, I made some fine brew, it would be a waste if I cannot savor the whole kettle." He directed her to also sit on a stone chair. Her hand remains firm on the dao's handle, preparing to slash if the situation demands it.
He leisurely poured another cup for himself, before he can do the same for Mayumi, she raised a hand and blocked the attempt.
"I can do it myself," she said coldly. The lack of friendliness did not affect the enforcer in anyway. He passed the kettle, and the Kyoshi Warrior reluctantly tasted the tea. "N-not bad."
Admittedly, it's a good brew, but she does want to say that out loud.
"So why are you here?" Mayumi interrogated quietly. "I suppose this has something to do with my probation."
"Indeed," he confirmed while not wasting time on formalities. "But clearly you have abided well with the secrets I was generous enough to share. This is nothing but a routine inspection." He enjoyed the tea after finding it cold enough to pour it in the mouth. "So, how did you perceive the journal's content? Were you fascinated by the peon's hubris or amused by their foolishness."
He waited for the response. Mayumi still fixed a stern expression on the man on the opposite side of the table. Yet she cannot deny that the Acolytes of San Bao is their shared enemy.
"It's a lot for me to process," she admitted. "I don't even know any of this, but neither can I let it slide either. My people were harmed by their transgression, you think it's easy for me to discuss?"
The inquisitor sipped the cup, perhaps acknowledging this reluctance. He slightly changed the subject, imploring her to realize the greater danger those zealots pose. From both cultural and religious aspects, the Acolytes of San Bao denounces all that is not approved by their 'Master'. Their tendency to expand and convert other people into their own is perhaps the most detrimental factor. With a world filled with vulnerable non-benders, potential recruits are seemingly everywhere. It truly is a battle for the hearts and minds. With the vague promise of a better future in accepting the absolutist view of the 'Master', many can be lured into the movement as fanatical members. Most of them were likely reasonable people, but willingly became acolytes from causes that are beyond their mortal control. Even those axe swinging thralls might just be helpless citizens who were dissatisfied with their lives, thereby seeking a new path out of their circumstances.
For the Kyoshi Warrior, those zealots intend to wipe away her culture. For the Dai Li, their presence in the Lower Ring destabilizes the delicate social harmony.
"I hope you have now attained better insight into these peons," the Dai Li said. "Regardless of what you think about our methods, they are quite effective."
Mayumi contemplated. She never viewed these enforcers with favorable lens. But against an enemy who seeks to invade culturally and usurp local customs, the Dai Li is disturbingly effective. It's almost as if the purpose of these cultural guardians is to exactly handle such subversive threats, countering the spiritual advance of these acolytes.
"There will naturally be certain things I disagree with, but so long as my sister's safety is guaranteed, it's fine no matter how you deal with those people." Mayumi emphasized. Thankfully, the Dai Li once again affirmed this promise, seeing value in protecting them just so the acolytes might be disadvantaged.
She looked into the cup, pondering for a second. There is something she wanted to know. The Acolytes of San Bao is a constant threat since they possess vague links with the pirates near Kyoshi Island. Can there be a permanent solution to ending this?
"Have you found out a way to destroy them?" she spoke. The pair of blue eyes still stared at the tea's clear surface. Rarely has Mayumi spoke with such malice. But the Acolytes of San Bao is now an even more personal matter, an everlasting threat with deranged intentions towards the people of Kyoshi Island.
"What do you mean by destroy?" He challenged, seemingly looking down at such statement. "Do you seriously believe that such subversion to society can be solved by just killing them all? The body may die, but the ideas that threatens to perverse the city's harmony cannot be easily diminished."
Here, the fierce warrior and the cunning secret police diverge. Both raised with different teachings and trained to fight in opposite environments. They will naturally not see eye to eye.
"Even if we managed to capture every single cultist on this world, what then? You don't even know where their spiritual leader resides. His mere existence alone is enough to amass distant followers all across the continent." The Dai Li knew it will take time for Mayumi to understand the true power of the acolyte leader. While the rational will see the 'Master' as nothing but a mere human, that figure is the same as a living deity who exerts control on people he doesn't even know. "Just dealing with the ones hiding beneath the Lower Ring is already hard enough. Even if all acolytes in this city are gone, what about the ones that arrives from the outside? Our armies can crush them in battle, but the foolish ideas they espouse will travel with the wind."
"Then what do you suggest?" Mayumi tried to reach for a clearer answer.
The Dai Li stated that the local leader of the acolytes have been captured, but numerous underground holdouts still exist within the Lower Ring. Even just this one city likely holds numerous followers, all of them rebelling at once would form a dangerous army. The key is to ensure they do not coordinate with one another. The inquisitor explained the decentralized nature of the sects dwelling within the city. Lower Ring is a massive area with high density, even searching for one secret congregation is akin to digging a needle out of a haystack. "The peons in the Lower Ring are hiding from the state, but it also means they must elude each other to not fell all at once. Apprehending them all will take time and resources. Alone and scattered, each group of these seditionists can be taken down individually without alerting the rest. While I admit it might not completely erase the problem, it can somewhat be effective in Ba Sing Se." Even searching for one small gathering could take years. Which is why the recent activities involving Huo's visit allows the Dai Li to capture many representatives in one single place, an opportunity the secret police will not let go.
A few sessions of torturing will be enough to pinpoint where the rest may be. But unfortunately, there is likely countless of these zealots. Not even the ever-knowing Dai Li agents would be enough to deal with them all to the last man.
But he stressed that even successfully completing all of this will still not be enough to fully eradicate them from the city. The gigantic walls cannot fend off the corrupting influence of the acolytes. New ones can still infiltrate and slowly amass followers, eventually regaining their strength. To truly kill an idea means to disprove it entirely. But since the acolytes believe they will reincarnate into a bender through faith, this claim cannot be easily refuted despite such ludicrous belief. He stated that one plausible option would be to discredit the invincibility of this 'Master' figure, if they even know where that man might be. If a powerful foe is weak before the eyes of millions, that will certainly pose some effect against the acolytes.
He rose from the chair after emptying another cup of tea. "Since you have so far abided by our agreement, I will take my leave." The man begins to turn, heading off for whatever nefarious task that matters for the city.
Mayumi already reaffirmed that not a single word about the Acolytes of San Bao will be discussed casually. This means, not even her own sister must know. She can only bear the secrets for now and perhaps reveal it years later. Yet, the Kyoshi Warrior is never content with being idle. Surely there is more to be learned about these peculiar cultists that seeks to impose an absolutist spirituality on the world. Although this Dai Li with grim face paint is only performing a surprise inspection to surveillance her loyalty, this rare meeting can also be an opportunity.
"Is there anything I can do to help?" Mayumi offered, halting his slow walk.
Silence followed, and she can only guess what is happening in the Dai Li's mind. His intentions cannot be read or deduced, which makes them more dangerous to negotiate with.
"I don't need your contribution," he stated bluntly. "Maintain your current circumstances and don't get in my way."
She debated this, claiming there is benefit by cooperating further. By increasing her own knowledge on those acolytes, it may assist their goal of combating the acolytes outside the city. While Mayumi acknowledges that such intentions may be somewhat selfish, it is still imperative to better understand these acolytes. Since there is likely many in the Lower Ring, a small expedition can be an eye-opening experience.
"If it's not too much of an inconvenience, would you sanction my accompany during one of your operations?" Mayumi held her breathe while looking at the Dai Li's back. Fully aware of the statement's gravity as it could even be interpreted as a treasonous act that obstructs the state.
"So, you wish to learn from our underhanded methods?" The Dai Li deliberately reframed her request. "I thought the ever so high and mighty Kyoshi Warriors do not wish to study the tactics from the people who disgraced your founder."
"You have quite the sense of humor, Khu Li," Mayumi countered calmly. Her rigid face suggests no amusement in the Dai Li's mockery. Not wishing to be viewed as conceding to his ways, she presented her own reasoning. "I just want to see how those fanatics behave outside the pages of a book. I am grateful that you can gave me the journal, but it would be more helpful to experience it myself." She did not mention other encounters with violent acolytes on the journey. But considering that the Dai Li are masters of information gathering, there is a chance that he already knew.
Although Huo's journal reveals valuable information on an acolyte's psychology, this can never replace actual encounters with those religious zealots. So far, the only contact with the Acolytes of San Bao are violent clashes. Be it deranged benders or axe-swinging thralls, the likes of them can be efficiently combated with her martial prowess. But the journal reveals a completely different approach initiated by the acolytes. She realized that the true danger of the cult is their ability to corrupt a group of people, turning them against one another on cultural and spiritual front. The subtle and more soothing tactics aim to exploit familial divisions, rapturing rifts while presenting themselves as an enlightening alternative to a people's tradition. If Fu Shanxiang arrived on Kyoshi Island in an intimidating fashion, then she would be easily repelled by arrows and metal fans. But that acolyte adapted a crafty approach, appearing harmless while slowly influencing impressionable members of the village. It is the subtle and unsuspected approach that can truly bring down a people to its knee. The armies of Ba Sing Se may be sufficient in killing the zealots who dare to assault the walls. But they would not be able to detect the cultists secretly proliferating behind the walls. An enemy that hides itself while amassing power cannot be countered with by only weapons. If finding them proves to be difficult, then a warrior like Mayumi would need to learn all she can.
"You seriously believe I would agree to that?" he asked without facing her.
"I can understand if you refuse, since any one of your fellow enforcers is already enough to-"
"I will allow it," he agree unexpectedly. There was no hint of anger or doubt in the voice. Mayumi suppressed her shock by how easy it was to gain the Dai Li's approval. "I will consider this as part of our agreement, a form of cultural exchange if you do not mind."
She gulped her throat, not sure if there is an ulterior motive behind the swift decision. It is actually unprecedented for someone like her to know even the most miniscule knowledge of the Dai Li. Being able to work with them in this manner is almost unheard of.
The sound of feathers flapping can be heard. She stood back as a messaging hawk descended under the cover the night. It landed on the inquisitor's shoulder, and he extracted the letter strapped to the creature's leg. As the Dai Li examined the content, the hawk turned it head and stared right at Mayumi.
There is not mistake. This is the same hawk that delivered the scholarship letter to Kyoshi Island. She still remembers the two extra feathers that stick out on the right side of the face.
A lone sweat flowed down the side of her temple, unsure what to make of this.
"My subordinates managed to locate a hideout," he said calmly. After sending the messenger hawk away, he turned around to face her directly. "If you wish to accompany me on this punitive expedition, then it would begin now."
"Now?" She asked.
There wasn't even enough time to process everything that just happened. The impressive speed by which they located a group of acolytes is both fascinating and terrifying. Since it is the Dai Li who is responsible for gathering information, the use of torture is definitely a common method applied on the religious zealots. But unlike normal bandits, their mindset is completely different. Dealing with a foe that treasures something above their own life warrants more specialized tactics.
The Dai Li's stone shoes helped him climb the courtyard wall, easily jumping onto the roof. He looked down at her, wondering if she has any intention to follow.
"If you are afraid, stay put," he demeaned.
Mayumi swallowed the rising resentment. He knew a Kyoshi Warrior like her cannot appear casually without the face paint and armor. But then again, how can she fully be equipped when the breastplate is dented? Wearing it will only hinder her more.
...
The rooftiles of the Lower Ring varied in quality. While some are sturdy, many are ready to be her literal downfall. It is even worse since the skies started to rain. One wrong step on a slippery tile is enough to send her rolling down a building, dropping to a painful death. As a Kyoshi Warrior, she can still rely on her training in arts of evasion. Despite possessing proficiency in maneuvering the Lower Ring's rooftops, it is sluggish compared to the Dai Li. His earth encased shoes can connect to buildings as if they are one, guaranteeing swift movement on earthen surfaces.
"Keep up," he demanded.
In all her years of being a Kyoshi Warrior, she has never been outpaced. With bending, he can effortlessly traverse the difficult terrain of this urban settlement, leaping over wide gaps without breaking a breath.
They both sped across a neighborhood, which is somewhere in the Jiu Long district. The vastness of the Lower Ring meant Mayumi does not know this new location, relying on the Dai Li as a guide. While conditions are better than war torn lands of other Earth Kingdom states, she noted there are clear signs that this area experienced poorer standards of living. As the Dai Li lectured, the most vulnerable members of society are more prone to join this nefarious spiritual movement. With the promise of a better future, the Acolytes of San Bao can amass countless needy people into their cause.
"Slow down!" she called out from behind. Mayumi suddenly realized that inquisitor is alone in this endeavor. Usually, these Dai Li agents prefer to work in twos.
After a whole two minutes of chasing, with herself almost losing sight on him, they arrived at what is presumably the destination. They stood on a roof that overlooks an ordinary neighborhood filled with sprawling houses, densely pack together with the usual green roof tiles. Most residents are already asleep, and the ones that stayed up late will inevitably drew suspicion from any Dai Li agents passing by.
He landed flawlessly on the middle of a street. Under the cover of darkness, his presence is concealed while quietly treading across the path. This place is just like many places in the Lower Ring where its name stands for little importance. But to Mayumi, she wants to know how to deal with an enemy that corrupts a society.
She leaped down the house and landed next to him, wary of the surrounding environment. "Where is your companion? Shouldn't there be another one of you here?" she asked.
The inquisitor did not even look at her when addressing the question. As they walked, he clarified that no one else will be joining.
"It is simply not needed," he stated coldly. "My personal preference involve reducing obstacles that stands between me and maintaining the city's order."
Mayumi remained quiet after hearing that, aware he likely views her as another unnecessary burden. So far, they walked unopposed. No threat that would indicate the use of violence, but indulging in that false sense of security will be asinine. Her chest plate being too damaged to be worn, only the straw hat and veil cloak acts as protection.
The gentle footsteps of the two ensued furthermore. While keeping an eye out for an ambush, she pondered on what they might be facing. Troublesome memories of the four bending bandits, those Firebenders as well as the numerous marauders who sacked the town of Shang led her to believe that a den of underground acolytes will also offer stubborn resistance. After fighting them personally, it is known that even the weakest non-benders amongst them could be a great threat. A piece of flesh that attacks rigorously with sheer fanatical zeal is nothing to laughed at. The pain endurance of those lowly thralls is enough to challenge her entire lifetime's training as a swordswoman. One wild and forceful swing, even if it's from an untrained combatant, could seriously create a wound. They are definitely different from conventional enemies who truly value their life. In a battle, acolytes who do not cherish their own body is capable of many unexpected things. Which is why this whole time, she walks while having one hand tightened on the dao's handle. What may occur next would likely involve cultists carrying axes, trying to chop them both for opposing their so-called 'Master'.
"I am curious as to why you don't ask me where I got this sword from," she said. "Aren't you going to inquire-"
He interrupted, belittling her to a certain degree. "I know many things in this city, you should know by now that gathering information is often more valuable than brute force."
The Khu Li is a man with little words. Just like many people in this city, Mayumi find it hard to fully communicate in a candid manner. Thankfully there are still some people who are willing to engage in more amicable conversations, but she is confident that none of them will be a Dai Li.
A few windows on what seems to be a warehouse do have some dim lights. At first, she thought that is where a group of zealots are hiding. But the Khu Li ignored it, walking pass and continued. This warranted her suspicion, wandering why they are still traveling on foot.
"We are here," he said suddenly.
Mayumi's hand tightened her grip on the sword, eyes glancing at all directions. There is nothing but a street of houses densely built together. Without elaborating, the inquisitor simply walked to one of the residential homes, positioned in front of a rotting door.
She carefully arrived next to him. "I am not trying to challenge your authority, but I don't think that this place is big enough to house a group of people." The nature of Lower Ring buildings is meant to provide the basic needs. Only the giant mansions of Upper Ring can sufficiently contain more than a dozen people.
"Your opinion is well-intended, but it is not an informed one." The Dai Li tapped one of his stone feet on the ground, holding a hand up to keep her silent. She wondered what sort of technique he is performing but understand that it must be a specialty of rare Earthbenders.
"They are here," he confirmed. Just as Mayumi wished to ask why they haven't brought more enforcers to capture the zealots, the Khu Li knocked on the door.
She panicked. While the Kyoshi Warrior has brought out the straw hat and veil as a disguise, it is still preferable to not be seen at all.
"I thought we are supposed to wait until reinforcements can come!" she hissed underneath the veil.
The Dai Li remained still, waiting as sounds of unlocking can be heard from behind the rotting wooden door. There are plenty of measures installed that keeps the other side occupied. Amongst the vast number of homes, there is nothing special about this one except it is on the ground floor.
After wrestling to unlock the multiple locks, the door finally opened. A cheerful fellow greeted the duo.
"Ah, you are finally here, we were just starting to-"
A man with long and untied hair froze. His initially delighted face faded upon realizing that the visitor is a Dai Li. The jaw opened, struggling to shut back up.
At first, the inquisitor allowed the man to process this. He then marched right into the house without seeking permission. Stone boots stomped the ground with each step. "I received information that this residential compound harbors subversive elements that threatens the state, surrender any suspects and we may negotiate a lighter sentence."
"W-we don't have that here!" the poor fellow quickly blurted. He knelt to the ground, pleading with the Dai Li. "We are just a small household that do not want any trouble. Please sir, there is nothing illegal here!"
Mayumi walked into the room. Her eyes scanned the place. Nothing here suggests a small gathering of these zealots. There is two smaller rooms and some ordinary furniture, and this entire space is only enough for perhaps five individuals.
The resident is still crying on the ground, begging for the Dai Li. He even gently tugged the enforcer's robe, adding to the sorrow. One cannot help but question this excessive reaction.
She walked around the tiny space, checking the corners for other people. There is a small portrait hanging on the wall that depicts the house owner and his family. In addition to the man himself, the painting included a mother and also a small girl. Perhaps there is an unfortunate reason why there are not present here.
Mayumi shortly returned to the Dai Li, confident of her assessment. "You got it wrong, there is nothing here."
The Dai Li glared coldly. "I can see why you people would jump to such conclusions."
She did not understand what he meant. But no matter how Mayumi interpreted this location, there is absolutely nothing that suggests a hiding place. The reaction of this tenant to the Dai Li's intrusion is understandable considering the notorious reputation of these cultural guardians.
"Khu Li, as a protector of your people, shouldn't you be a bit more reasonable?" She openly challenged, believing that barging into someone's home is too excessive. "Perhaps your subordinates gave you the wrong information, and you shouldn't trust it entirely."
"That I fully concur," the Dai Li responded in a rare instance of agreeableness. "It is absolutely foolish to allow one's emotions to obscure the task at hand."
Without warning, he kicked the poor fellow in the stomach, painfully against the wall. Since the Earthbender has boots made of raw earth, this strike could have potentially killed the citizen.
"Dai Li! That is enough!" Mayumi tried not to raise her voice, but this act of unnecessary abuse is simply unjustified for the indignant Kyoshi Warrior. It seems that the term 'excessive official' fits this inquisitor perfectly, being a man who wields such powers without restraint.
She walked closer, forced herself between the two. "Listen here, I thought you cultural guardians have already disappointed Kyoshi enough, are you seriously going to harm an innocent civilian just to maintain order? You don't even know if he is even who you are looking for."
His face, ever filled with grimness, glared fiercely. The Dai Li quickly reminded her of his authority over this punitive expedition.
"What derives from your heart cannot reconcile with the truth," warned the enforcer. "A warrior like you have yet to grasp the hideous nature of humans. Such creatures that lie and deceive should be locked away like the rabid dog they are."
Mayumi looked back at the defenseless man who is still in a kneeled position. He doesn't have much to begin with, even the cloths he wears do not suggest any wealth.
"What is your name, and where is your family?" she asked.
This stranger answered with intense stuttering. He claimed to be Wang, a local butcher who recently lost his daughter due to sickness. His wife also followed, and he is the only one left in this household.
"A butcher?" the Dai Li asked. "I hope the meat you work with are animal flesh." Wang immediately recoiled, crawling his whole body into the shape of ball.
Mayumi softened grip on the sword, letting go after sensing no danger here except for the unrelenting enforcer. The Dai Li has so far tortured this unfortunate fellow with insults after arriving uninvited. It is common sense to recognize the rudeness of invading the home of others.
"There has to be a mistake," Mayumi suggested. She turned around to face the Dai Li again. "Do you seriously believe a poor man like this is capable of threating the city's harmony? I thought you people are better than this."
The inquisitor raised an eyebrow. "With all due respect, it was I who was gracious enough to let you accompany me on this minor operation. As a guest to our city, it would better if you respect the ones who spent years to curates the local environment." He looked at Wang with a sharp gaze that pierces the man's spirit. "This delinquent here is nothing but a liar and deceiver, a poor actor that exploits the kindness of others shall only deserve the harshest punishment. I wouldn't be surprised if he was responsible for the death of two defenseless individuals."
She is appalled by this groundless accusation. Mayumi wondered how he can be so confident in such judgement.
"T-that is blasphemous!" Wang outburst indignantly. "I loved them more than most things in this world! I only do what is best for my family!"
The Dai Li then went over to the paintings hanged on the wall. There is also two separate portraits of a young girl and an older woman, deceased daughter and wife of Wang. Mayumi wondered what is he up to now?
"I see that you do not perform ritual offerings to your dead wife and daughter, how petty." the Dai Li remarked. "Even the poorest of the poor can at least provide a bowl of fruit."
Wang became nervous as the enforcer questioned him on this lack of detail. In most religious practices across Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation, offering of incense sticks and food tribute are commonly performed for deceased family members. Such values espoused by the more religious Sages demand such customs be reinforced by paying respect to the deceased. Not doing so may violate traditional values so heavily emphasized by the Grand Earth Sage himself.
"I suppose you are in need of reconditioning," the Dai Li said to Wang. "Perhaps paying a few visits to a temple might help with your degrading spirituality."
"Dai Li, this shouldn't be a matter for you to impose," Mayumi barged in again." She reasoned that the intel must have been false, therefore they should return until more solid evidence has been gathered. "There is nothing here except Wang. Even someone of your ability should know that this tiny space would not be enough to store more than ten people."
The expectation is that there is a whole den of acolytes who secretly gather to conspire. Her own belief dictates that this small residential compound is not enough to contain half of such number. Which is why the Dai Li is wasting his time on a random citizen who may have nothing to do with this.
"Perhaps I can just ask him directly." The Dai Li turned to Wang, openly inquiring if he is a member of the Acolytes of San Bao. Of course, the latter denied any such involvement. What confused Mayumi is why this enforcer candidly pronounced the cult directly, as the main goal of the secret police aims to suppress the knowledge to preserve public order.
Wang continued to shake his head. Mayumi is not fond of the Dai Li's persistence and demanded that he cease this unneeded treatment.
"I have done nothing wrong!" Wang pleaded, using Mayumi as a shield against the enforcer.
"Dai Li, the differentiation between enemies and the innocent is paramount," Mayumi stressed. "If this man truly is a member of then it would have been a bit more obvious."
The inquisitor countered, insisting that Wang will be taken back for further questioning. Just as she wanted to further argue the ethics of such draconian approach, the Dai Li suddenly lunged at her, pulling the sword out of the sheath and slew Wang across the neck.
She didn't even have the chance to reflex this unexpected act.
"Why did you do that?" Mayumi was in shock.
She then noticed the sharp knife dropped from Wang's hand. The Dai Li went over and picked it up, examining the craftsmanship. It is a small, crooked blade with rough edges. But should it plunge into a victim's exposed back, the results will be devastating.
"You were not wearing armor," he correctly deducted correctly. Despite the veiled disguise, the Dai Li understand that without a blacksmith, her equipment cannot be repaired easily.
"Did he tried to kill me?" Mayumi struggled to recover from the aftermath.
The speed by which the Dai Li performed the strike was impressive. But it was even more alarming that Wang tried to stab her in the back. In all her years of fighting, there has never been an opponent that successfully landed an ambush strike. Yet, she failed to anticipate Wang's betrayal.
"Your skills are refined, but they are not useful here," the Dai Li remarked. "A warrior who fought in broad daylight should not masquerade themselves as paragons for this side of the city. Perhaps you should speak less and listen more." He slides the sword back to the sheath and walked over to the bloodied Wang. The suspect held his neck tightly, yet blood continues to spurt outward to the pavement. Seeing the face filled with a mixture of fear and anger, Mayumi is at a loss as to how to respond.
"Tell me where they are," the inquisitor demanded without raising much voice. His tone indicates annoyance rather than anger. The enforcer gripped Wang's neck using the stone gauntlet, forcing him against the wall. It strangely did stop the bleeding.
Wang stared at the Dai Li with intense anger.
"Not answering?" The enforcer raised an eyebrow before proceeding to use Earthbending to move the bookshelf in the far side of the room. Both Mayumi and Wang are dumbstruck. This whole time, the Dai Li was aware there is a secret entrance with a ladder.
The Dai Li gently released Wang. But this minor act would probably doom the acolyte to a slow death, as the loss of blood continued without proper hemorrhage control. Wang struggled with stop this as the inquisitor marched to the hidden entrance.
"Shall we?" The Dai Li mocked politeness.
Reluctantly, Mayumi followed him into the secret entrance. She casted a cold glance at the dying acolyte before climbing down the ladder.
...
The descend took much longer than anticipated. Who would have thought that these zealots can build such long network of tunnels leading to just one of their hiding places. According to the Dai Li, there are countless of these compounds scattered around the Lower Ring. Every underground congregation has at least one Earthbender, who is usually the leader, who can use bending to carve out space beneath the ground. Non-bending followers can then gather to experience the teachings imparted by the 'Master' through local leaders. However, sectarian divides and the decentralized nature of these groups meant there will be variations between the teachings. But all will follow the standard belief in venerating the man known as the 'Celestial Master'. Most attendees are just ordinary peasants who are infatuated with the Acolytes of San Bao, becoming devotees after being invited by another cultist. With the promise of attaining miraculous wealth and comforting solace, many are incentivized to cultivate their spirituality by serving the 'Master'. The empty promise to reincarnate as a bender in the next life is simply too irresistible for vulnerable non-benders. The proliferating nature of these cultists meant it is easy to start another underground den elsewhere and amass new followers.
"Why did you pretended not to know Wang is one of them?" Mayumi asked as they continued to walk through the tunnel. "Toying with another person's life is unnecessary, don't you think?"
"I wasn't toying with that peon's pathetic existence," the Dai Li answered. "I was simply testing you, reinforcing my belief that a Kyoshi Warrior is unsuited for this kind of work. If it alleviates your guilt, that fool will die even if you are absent."
Mayumi internally fumed at that kind of thinking. "Excessive killing is not honorable in any measure," she retorted.
"Oh very? Then enlighten me, warrior of Kyoshi, did that peon from before thought about honor as he tried to perform a lowly attack? In his eyes, you are nothing more but an impressionable young girl who is easy to trick, earning your trust is the only a way to kill you."
She thought about his argument, wondering if the Dai Li was just being pragmatic in this matter. It is true that Wang held malice in his heart. If she thought such foe directly, a small knife will never be enough to even scratch an elite Kyoshi Warrior. But by pretending to be defenseless, the acolyte made her subconsciously lower guard, thereby opening a new opportunity to deliver a potentially fatal strike.
"I thought my skills will be used on foes that charge at me mindlessly," Mayumi reluctantly admitted. "Yet I did not expect facing such deception." It was difficult to acknowledge her failing here.
"The thralls that fought you in that alley is case of exception. Why should they ever reveal themselves a direct confrontation will be futile? You have yet to see the worst nature of humans." The inquisitor insinuated. His view on humanity in general is not favorable. "I see all humans as merely animals who donned themselves with clothing just to maintain the illusion of civilization. But in all fairness, calling them akin to animals is simply an insult to all the creatures that roam the wilds, soar in the skies and swim in the waters. Betrayal can come from many places, even from those you cherish dearly."
She narrowed her eyes at that callous statement. "I would never betray my-"
"Halt," he suddenly ordered in a quietened tone. "Do not move unless I say so.
Mayumi can see a faint light at the end of the roughly dug tunnel. But even more strangely, she can hear sounds of singing. The tremor felt as if many people stomping up and down in an excited manner. As they approached closer, the speech is a lot more audible.
"The Celestial Master has blessed us with his powers!" a man with long hair proclaimed. As usual, the lower caste acolytes responded with the utmost enthusiasm whenever they hear about their leader. "He has told me about his gratitude and has thanked you all for the enduring faith. As we continue to reshape Ba Sing Se by sharing the truth, one day he shall come and bring forth the Eternal Balance! Let us relish in this ceremony of purity!"
The followers all chanted and praised the 'Master'. They paraded around the burning pit, childishly stomping the ground with eagerness.
Mayumi peered her head over the room's door, observing at least forty acolytes gathered. The Leader of this congregation is very noticeable. The 'Shepherd' is standing on the small, elevated mound of earth. He wields a wooden staff and commands other acolytes to celebrate around the fire. Just like Wang, it seems that everyone here has the same hairstyle for men being long and loosen. Not a single adult male has the commonly known topknot or Ba Sing Se's iconic queue hairstyle. She wondered what in world are doing by dancing around a pit of fire. Not only is this foolish to do it underground, but the lack of ventilation could also kill them all as the smoke as nowhere to escape.
"What are these people doing?" Mayumi is beyond confused. Ordinary people circled the firepit in the middle of the room, joyous dancing continued as they chant and praise the ever so elusive figure.
"Their behavior is rather mild," the Dai Li remarked. "There are more grotesque sights that the mere mentions of what I witnessed will disgust your innards."
Her eyes caught something in the middle of the firepit. Charred bones and ribs are amongst the burning wood. At first, she thought those are just animal carcasses used as some sort of sacrificial ritual. But the sight of two very human skulls have changed that entirely.
"Dai Li," Mayumi whispered quietly while trying to overcome cold shoulders. "What is it you saw that could be worse than this?"
He also noticed the burning human bones in the pit of fire but was completely unfazed. "Someone of your meagre strength will not be handle my words."
Mayumi wondered what he meant. There are many things in this world that could horrify an individual until their spirit finally withers away, turning into husks of their form selves. Knowledge can both be empowering and detrimental. Many times, the mere comprehension of a horrific truth will be more devastating than physical pain. She doesn't want her sister to ever need to handle this.
"Do you know why they treat human bones like this? What is exactly the point of burning it?" She appealed to the Dai Li's former experiences. After a short explanation, Mayumi learnt that this act of burnt offering has a strong connection to their understanding of purity. It is a practice that aims to offer tribute to the spiritual leader despite his physical absence. Conveniently, valuable items such as gold and silver are not tossed into the inferno. Precious items are normally given to the high-ranking leaders, who will presumably 'send' it to their supreme 'Master'.
According to the grim-faced inquisitor, this ritual is normally performed by the slaughter of an animal. Instead of it being a religious practice dedicate to a local spirit or deity, it is performed to solely venerate the man named the 'Celestial Master'. But in extremely rare occasions, these cultists may choose to sacrifice a person who is not an acolyte. The victim would preferably be someone who adheres to a different belief. Since the Acolytes of San Bao view all other spirituality as corrupt and in opposition to their leader, they can justify this gruesome act as the will of their beloved Master.
"This is sickening," Mayumi said. While she may not fully understand the process of offering food to the spirits, burning animals and humans as tribute to a living individual is ludicrous!
"No, calling them bold would be more accurate," the Dai Li corrected. "Illegal gathering and the illicit treatment of corpses violated Ba Sing Se's moral and juristic code. Of all the places in the world, they chose to do it here."
Perhaps this man is personally insulted by the audacity of these acolytes. The city of Ba Sing Se is turf of the world's most infamous secret police. Since those who live here understood that fact clearly, joining the Acolytes of San Bao would be no doubt treasonous.
They did not immediately charge into the room. Whoever they chose to torch in the pit of fire is dead already, no point of intervening now.
"Khu Li, I suggest you call the others for help," Mayumi suggested. Despite her own skill as a talented warrior, fighting alone will be disadvantageous. Encounters with the thralls who can endure the slash of a blade have been a valuable lesson. These acolytes may not have armor or weapon, but their fanatism alone is enough to compensate. Which is why capturing the ones here will not be easy.
"It won't be necessary, not now at least," he answered.
Mayumi watched in horror as the Dai Li stepped to the room. If it wasn't for the veil concealing her whole body, the gawking reaction would be available for the world to see.
"Bathe yourself in the Master's light, let no one doubt his glory!"
As the Dai Li simply strolled in, gradually the people noticed. Mayumi is unsure how to respond. She remained stationary by the order of the enforcer, observing from relative safety. Looks of surprises enveloped the faces of all acolytes. There are even small children amongst them, making this situation even more precarious.
The inquisitor cleared his throat as they all turned to the unexpected visitor. He even took some time to pat off some dirt that have gathered on the robe, completely not afraid as a few acolytes assumed a defensive stance. After finally completed some arbitrary actions, the man spoke.
"Surrender or die," the Dai Li stated bluntly. It felt like a routine quote that have been used many times before. "I offer this one generous chance. Do not flounder this rare opportunity."
"How dare you intrude on this holy site!" The shepherd roared. The others also begin to scream in anger. Mayumi doesn't know why they consider this this poorly dug space as spiritually important.
Some of the acolyte started to walk forward, standing closer to the Dai Li. Without any weapons, they raised their fists and assumed an Earthbending stance. Tension escalated quickly as the Shepherd stomped the wooden staff on the ground, issuing an attack.
"Children, punish this trespasser for disrespecting the Master's land!"
Mayumi watched as the Earthbenders launched small discs at the Dai Li. She didn't intervene as the attacks became even more volatile. Boulders are tossed onto the inquisitor as his body disappeared from their sight.
"Ha! This is why you should never challenge the Master's Purebenders!" The Shepherd prematurely celebrated.
As the Earthbenders came near the pile of rubble to inspect what they believe is a dead enemy, those men suddenly fell backwards. All are in shock as those 'purebenders' are lying on the ground, each body slowly oozing out small red puddles.
The Dai Li emerged unharmed. His signature earth gauntlet has a few tiles missing, indicating the pellets were shot into those hostile acolytes.
With all the Earthbending thralls dead, there is only the Sheperd, who is the most dangerous one.
"Do not take another step!" The leader points the wooden staff at the Dai Li. "How dare you desecrate this holy site with the stench of blood!" The other acolytes are panicking. With their 'pure' Earthbenders gone, they are almost powerless against cold-blooded secret police.
"You called this place a holy site?" The Dai Li walked closer to the mob, taunting them in the manner of a gentleman. "I am rather disappointed to see citizens of Ba Sing Se elevating this poor man's mausoleum above the Royal Palace. Even a humble teahouse in the Lower Ring is more comfortable than this grave. It seems that your spirituel leader has a poor taste in architecture. Perhaps I can teach him how to refine such uncultured ways."
Anger immediately arose amongst the remaining acolytes. The Dai Li's speech was designed to incite anger by belittling the man they love.
"How dare you insult the Master! Who are you to assert yourself above him?" The Sheperd is physically incensed by the Dai Li's audacity. To the acolytes, no one is above their spirituel leader, not even the Avatar. "Repent your morale transgression and turn to the light! The Master is merciful and is willing to forgive a worthless youngling like you!"
The other followers chanted loudly, demanding the Dai Li to take back his words. But the robed man simply looked at the pit of fire, captivated by the skulls of an adult and a child.
"I assume that one of you imbeciles have offered their family members as a tribute," the Dai Li mused. "Wouldn't it be more useful to keep them around?"
"It is an honor that the likes of you shall never obtain!" The Sheperd denounced this lack of appreciation. "I thought Wang was worthy enough for this holy rite. But since he failed to stop you at the entrance, this ceremony was wasted!"
The sound of a sword being drawn ranged out from the entrance. The cloaked woman walked in, bearing a blade.
"Another trespasser!" The Sheperd exclaimed. "Holding a weapon on this holy site is forbidden! You are all vile creatures that must be enlightened in the ways of the Celestial Master! Submit to him and I shall lead you both to the light."
"Save it," Mayumi rebuffed. "You are not someone I would choose to learn from. If submitting to your leader produces such foolishness, then this light you speak of is nothing but empty words."
She pointed the dao at the man himself. It was difficult to stand near the pit of fire. Upon closer inspection, the human bones exhibit signs that it has been cut with a meat cleaver. It's possible that the victims were butchered before the remains were tossed into the fire. If it wasn't for this Sheperd spreading asinine beliefs, then the gullible Wang wouldn't be misled into giving his family as human tribute.
The Dai Li rebuked her interruption, but Mayumi just couldn't let the deceiving charlatan go without some good slashing. What was supposed to be an opportunity to learn more about these acolytes have instead shown that these people will drag others into the grave with their stupidity.
"Your tongue should demonstrate restraint, woman," the Shepherd harshly warned Mayumi. "It is such audacity and rebellious behavior that will displease him. No maidens in this world can be considered pure unless they submit to the Celestial Master."
"Submit? I think you asked the wrong type of people for that." Mayumi held the dao tighter. While she may not be accustomed with singlehanded swords, it is still sufficient enough to gravely injure the charlatan.
The Dai Li stepped ahead of her, regaining control of the conversation. "My patience are rarely given for those who work against the state. I shall generously grant you another last chance to surrender."
Mayumi readied her sword in case some of them choose to attack. As of now, the Dai Li killed all the Earthbenders except for the Shepherd himself. It is obvious that the remaining non-bending acolytes are nothing remarkable. Mere poor peasants who are not even armed will die if they challenge the Dai Li. But the distinctive part about these zealots would be their lack of self-preservation, even the lowliest amongst them will allow superstition to overrule fear.
The Shepherd remains calm in the face of persecution. He stomped his wooden staff on the ground, garnering the attention of his followers. "You are a fool to believe that the children of the Master would be easily intimidated. Unlike you lowly Dai Li, all the Faithfuls here shall reap their rewards after the great harvest. Why should they fear your metal chains if they are empowered by the True Father himself? The Eternal Balance promises greater cultivation through serving him. Even if we fell in battling against darkness, our spirits shall be rejuvenated into greater power."
To ordinary people, this sounds absolutely ludicrous. But all the surrounding adults who adheres to the Eternal Balance no longer felt fear striking their bones. They regained confidence in the Master's powers. Not even the Dai Li's presence is enough.
"Only those who do not have faith in the Master will fell in battle!" the Shepherd galvanized. "Show them no mercy. You do not need weapons to defeat them, for the Master has granted you great powers for the battle. You will be impervious. You will not be killed. You will never fail if you have faith in the Master!"
The other acolytes slowly walked forward, baring fists and prepare to confront the two intruders.
Mayumi raised the sword in a more threatening manner. Yet the unarmed acolytes are still advancing. "Don't be deceived!" she tried to reason with them. "If faith is all you need, then why are your brethren all dead?"
Despite physically witnessed the fallen 'purebenders', the other followers are still firm in their belief. Their faces retained righteous anger towards the intruders, making Mayumi's attempt futile. Somehow, these acolytes are not bothered by the fact that faith did not save the Earthbenders from the Dai Li's earth pellets. The Sheperd's promise that their faith can grant them some form of divine protection is clearly a contradiction.
"The Purebenders are powerful, but they are not perfect!" one of the acolytes roared. "Only the Master is the perfect one. The Master's power is with us! The only way for people to lose it is because they have doubts!" That man delegated the blame onto their fellow acolytes instead of questioning the validity of their belief.
"These Earthbenders simply do not have enough faith!" another chimed in.
There is no sign of the acolytes backing down. The Dai Li released an annoyed sigh. The smell of burning human corpses have only made this ordeal even more unpleasant.
"I am displeased that you failed to follow my orders," the Dai Li harshly rebuked Mayumi. He grasped one of his gauntlets, replenishing the missing pieces that was used as lethal projectiles. "Stay back and do not interfere."
The Dai Li walked forward. Hands comfortably concealed in his sleeves as the nearest acolytes charged forward to initiate unarmed melee.
"Forward children!" the Shepherd encouraged. "Show them no-"
All stood in horror as the Dai Li ensnared an unfortunate acolyte with chains. After pulling the poor fellow closer, countless earth pellets are shot into the flesh, an unbearable scream ensued. No matter how strong their faith may be, the acolytes are nonetheless intimidated by the gruesome display. It is at this exact moment when all are fixated by the acolyte's suffering, Mayumi saw the Dai Li surged forward at the mob of people. Using Earthbending, he propelled himself upward, almost appearing to fly.
"Stop him children!" the Sheperd ordered. The Dai Li traversed over the acolytes who positioned themselves as obstacles. The main target is obviously the man wielding the wooden staff.
Mayumi wanted to watch what occurs next but is forced to address the few acolytes who did not rush to the Sheperd's aid.
"Anyone who are allies with the Dai Li is an enemy of the Master! And anyone who is an enemy of the Master is an enemy of mine!" A man with long hair charged forward to deliver a punch, but she easily incapacitates him by jabbing at pressure points on the wrist.
"What sorcery is this?" asked another enraged attacker. "This must be the works of the evil spirits. Let us torch this witch to cleanse her corrupt ways!"
Mayumi cursed at them. She does not blame these people for not knowing about chi-blocking. But perceiving everything in existence as in opposition to their spirituel leader is rather asinine.
Easily, she disabled more assailants. Unlike the thralls who are impervious to pain, these acolytes are mere peasants whose threat amounts to little. After defeating a few more with only her martial skills, a lone acolyte decided to try something different.
"Begone with your foul spells!" It is from an acolyte woman. She went over to the pit of fire and picked up a burning stick, preparing to use it on Mayumi.
The Kyoshi Warrior finally used the dao. The sword cleanly chopped the torch in half, rendering it harmless. The lightness of the one-handed blade paired with flexible metal makes it a good alternative to her usual katana. It seems that Shan is very selective in the options.
The acolyte woman did not back down. With a rageful cry, the enemy pulled out a knife in an attempt to stab. Mayumi also positioned her sword to disarm this opponent, but something else interrupted it all.
"You fool!" one of the acolytes on the ground yelled. "How dare you use a weapon on sacred ground!"
Mayumi was surprised when the woman ceased all action and knelt to the ground.
"I didn't mean to!" the female zealot apologized. She dropped the knife and prostrated onto the floor. It is a bizarre scene which Mayumi struggles to comprehend. But from the interactions between the two acolytes, it seems they are husband and wife. Apparently, the rule that weapons are forbidden here have been taken very, very seriously. In all her years of being a warrior, this is beyond expectation.
"Not only have you tarnished this sacred ground with your disobedience, but you also act in defiance against the Master!" The paralyzed man berated further. "The only way you can redeem yourself is to cleanse this mistake! You know what to do."
Mayumi stood confused. But she was shocked further when the acolyte woman willingly jumped into the pit of fire. A hellish scream ensued, and thankfully Satchiko is not here to witness this.
The husband was unfazed by this suicidal act. Instead, he seems relieved by the woman's sacrifice.
"Are you happy now?" Mayumi stood over the paralyzed man. She doesn't even know his name yet taking this eyesore out of the world seem very attractive.
She sensed footsteps approaching from behind and spun around with her sword, expecting light resistance. But instead of facing more acolytes, a group of children is present instead.
"Back off!" one of them shouted.
Mayumi was stunned. They are no threat to her. They are not even armed. But as she tries to contemplate on how to keep these children from harm, they suddenly surrounded her.
"Hey! What are you doing?" Mayumi panicked. She failed to react quick enough. These kids managed to grab the arms of the seasoned warrior. With their superior numbers, they overwhelmed her in strength.
"Quick, push her to the fire, the Master will cleanse her!" one of them yelled.
"Got it!" a little girl answered.
Mayumi mouth almost dropped to the ground. To think that young children are capable of this kind of deranged thinking.
"Let go!" she demanded. The sheer number of children restraining her arms have made escape impossible. "Don't make me use my sword!" She threatened in avail, knowing such nefarious act will be impossible to commit onto impressionable juveniles.
They pushed her closer to the inferno. It was terrifying to again see the charred skulls and bones, knowing she might be next. These mere children are determined to see her burn to ashes, yet the prospect of injuring them is also unfathomable.
"Children," a calm voice ranged out from the far side of the room. The younglings stop and turn to see the Sheperd standing amongst the disfigured corpses. "Release her."
The obedient young acolytes, not wishing to question their elder's wisdom, they let go of Mayumi. The Kyoshi Warrior hastily reacted by paralyzing their weaker bodies, carefully blocking pressure points. The art of chi-blocking ensures the defeat of enemies that she do not wish to harm. They all dropped to the ground, frightened.
"Teacher, help!" one of the helpless boys cried as he lies on the ground.
The Sheperd's body fell forward, tumbling to the floor. There stood the enforcer, staring coldly at the deceived children. He felt no regret, knowing these younglings have already been misled.
It is revealed that the Dai Li drilled his gauntlet into the Sheperd's spine, precisely at the spot below the neck. The victim's body is still twitching, involuntary convulsion ensued as the muscles lost all sense of coordination. Even if this higher ranked acolyte somehow survived, the body will likely be vegetative. The Dai Li wasn't even compassionate enough to grant him a quick death.
"How does it feel?" The Dai Li asked Mayumi as he slowly walked closer. "It must be very different for a warrior like you to encounter foes that do not match the conventional." He gently lifted his foot over the bodies of dead acolytes, unaffected by the despaired faces of the juveniles.
This is not a battle. It is nothing like what Mayumi has initially imagined. A marauder with killing intent and bloodthirst can be easily taken down. But she can never bring herself to harm little children.
"What are your intentions on them?" She worried about the acolyte younglings. Considering the Dai Li's notorious history for hundreds of years, it is not impossible for these juveniles to meet the same fate as the adults.
He stared at her while circling around them all. Those eyes emitted disapproval in such compassion. "Too soft, too delicate, and too weak. I find it amusing that you are trying to defend the same people who tried to kill you."
"These are just children," Mayumi reasoned.
"No, they will be seditionists who worked against the state if we do not intervene," the Dai Li enforced ruthlessly. Perhaps in his eyes, age is not a factor. "I shall remind you that their fate ultimately lies in my decision. Do not forget that all the ones you fought were once children themselves."
Before Mayumi can further argue against what may be the most unneeded cruelty, both of them are forced to address the remaining acolytes who are still standing. Before she tried to paralyze the enemies with chi-blocking, it is soon clear that the Dai Li have no intentions of sparing most of them. The heavy stench of blood is more detectable as the other corpses began to ooze out such foulness. Without any obvious wounds, the tiny earth pellets hurtled by the Dai Li is even more lethal than the giant boulders.
"Stay back!" A woman screamed. In her hands is a small infant wrapped in white cloth. Appearing visibly distraught, they hid in the room's corner. Mayumi can see the little white face of the newborn. From the mother's perspective, she is doing everything to protect her child from a dangerous threat.
The Dai Li gazed to her, this alone induced unparalleled fear into this Lower Ring citizen.
"Resistance is unnecessary," said the enforcer blatantly. He reached out his literal stone hand in a demanding gesture. The mother only held the infant tighter, which prompted the Dai Li to retract his hand. "Hand over the neonate," he ordered in a heavy voice. "I am not asking twice."
Mayumi believe there is no need to use excessive force or pressure. She implored the enforcer to reduce this intimidating posture and adapt leniency on the harmless duo.
"Your needless emotions are obstructing my duty," he warned.
Against the Dai Li's advice and risk incurring his wrath, Mayumi slowly approached the mother. She even dropped her sword on the ground just to further prove her trustworthiness. "Please, there is no need to be afraid. I know you are all very confused and frightened. Don't worry, so long as I am here, nothing will happen to your child." Of course, she isn't certain about this. The Dai Li cannot be trusted. Even if she wants to guarantee the safety of this mother and infant, what can even be done when Dai Li agents apprehended them?
"W-what will happen to my son?" asked the mother with teary eyes. She is both crying and angered at the same time. Understandably, anyone who witnessed their own people killed by cultural guardians would be horrified about the future.
Mayumi tries to come up with an answer that will satisfy the acolytes. All those years fighting pirates, verbally threatening them with the prospect of being fed to the giant eel has not helped at all in this delicate situation. Even if the Dai Li simply apprehended them both, what will happen next? An underground prison is no place for a mother and her newborn child. What can a Kyoshi Warrior like herself do in the face of all the Dai Li agents? She has no power or sway.
To ensure that these two are not harmed right now, Mayumi did the only thing available now.
She lied.
"Don't worry," Mayumi feign a voice of confidence. "Your son will not be harmed."
She tried to approach them carefully, and the Dai Li observed from afar, analyzing her difference in approach.
Mayumi spoke softly. "Please, if you will just listen to me and-"
"Back off! I said back off!"
Mayumi obliged, stepping back to allow more space for the mother. But she failed to anticipate that the acolyte woman would use this opportunity to rush pass, grabbing the dao.
"Put it down," Mayumi requested. She felt ironic that they have both switched positions. However, the acolyte does not seem to know how to correctly wield the sword. She can still disarm her.
Mayumi once again tries to move towards the cautious acolyte. But the mother then unexpectedly held the blade at infant's neck, threatening to cut it.
The warrior froze. Once again, underestimating the abnormal mindset of these deranged acolytes have proven to be a great mistake. It has never been apparent that fighting a marauder is easier than trying to convince a mother to spare her child. What in the world has she gotten herself into?
"I know what you going to do to my son!" The mother scathed at Mayumi, who struggles to respond in accord to the distressed acolyte. "The whole lot of you just want to see our people suffer! In our most dire need, it is the Master who gave us hope, yet the world always stands against us!" She hugged the infant even more protectively, almost suffocating it. The Dai Li has blocked the corridor, destroying all escape routes. "The Master has blessed me with a son. I swore to raise it to be a be faithful acolyte who will fight for him to the end!"
Mayumi is unamused by that statement. It is hard to agree with this sentiment after witnessing so much violence committed by the acolytes. She knew this acolyte will raise the infant into what may possibly be another thrall. But it is even more shocking that the mother is entertaining the idea of killing her son.
"If this child cannot dutifully serve the Master, then I shall ensure that he is not taught to fight against him and the Eternal Balance!"
"No!" Mayumi saw the woman trying to thrust the blade into the infant. She rushed forward to intervene, but even her agility is not enough to stop the sword from penetrating the skin.
A lone rock precisely pelted the acolyte's arm, knocking the blade out of her hands.
"Enough of this circus," the Dai Li demeaned. Despite the timely intervention, the tip of the sword still managed to pierce the infant's skin. It cried inconsolably. "One last time, hand it over."
"Never!'' screamed the acolyte.
Mayumi is horrified as the mother suddenly lunged towards the fire. She knew what is going to happen and attempts of negotiation have failed to secure the child's safety. This pit of inferno is used for sacrificial offerings to the man they dearly worship, it is considered an 'honor' and 'privilege' to give tribute to the Master. Without anywhere to escape, this acolyte woman chose this only path for herself and the infant.
"Please no!" Mayumi helplessly screamed.
The Dai Li intervened. He used Earthbending to propel himself forward. The mother jumped with the child closely enveloped in arms. But the infant is cruelly yanked away midair, and the last standing acolyte burned with a hellish scream. Mayumi closed her eyes and covered both years, the same way her sister cowered when they were in the town of Shang.
There was no remorse in his eyes. The fire tore through the acolyte as her hands desperately reaches for her son. Skins charred and the Dai Li stared emotionlessly at the fool who killed herself.
"How unnecessary," he remarked in the usual voice.
After shoving the crying infant into Mayumi's hands, the Dai Li surveyed the room. The smoke generated by the fire pit is becoming thicker. They could all suffocate.
"Leave the others, we will take the children first," the Dai Li ordered. Of course, the juvenile acolytes will never entertain the thought of being taken away. They resisted, doing everything they can to make the process more difficult. With only two people, carrying them all out will also take time.
"We can just extinguish the fire instead," Mayumi advised. She believes this man is trying to kill the older acolytes, deeming them as expendable corpses that needed to be removed.
At first, Mayumi expected refusal from the Dai Li. But her suggestion was instead countered by some acolytes who are still paralyzed on the ground.
"You cannot extinguish the sacred fire!" a man protested indignantly. "The Master is angry at you for trespassing this holy ground. He will want our heads impaled on stakes if you dare even try to put out the fire!"
Before Mayumi can further reason with them, the Dai Li bend the ground around him and hurled the earth onto the fire pit. The acolytes gasped as the flames which they consider to be holy was unceremoniously destroyed.
"You fool, you doomed us all!" someone yelled.
Mayumi was surprised by how erratic they became. Luckily the acolytes are paralyzed by her chi-blocking...or simply killed by the Dai Li's ruthless onslaught.
...
Mayumi climbed onto the roof of a pagoda tower, taking the stairs have been very exhausting.
The Dai Li stood dangerously near the edge, unfazed by the prospect of falling. Those pair of earthen boots will ensure firm attachment to the surface. He placed his hands behind the back, staring into the distance, marveling at the countless clay rooftops that dominates the Lower Ring.
"I always enjoy this sight," he complimented the unimpressive neighborhood. Not a single light is visible, and it's rather mundane compared to the extravagant Upper Ring palaces. "I don't suppose Kyoshi Island has any of this, right?"
"We don't, just small villages made of wood, nothing the likes of you will fancy," her eyes are fixated on Wang's residence. After the Khu Li sent out a message using a hawk, more enforcers arrived. Remaining acolytes are all hurled into wooden carriages.
"What will happen to them?" she asked. It is the unknown that is truly concerning. The acolytes are severely mistreated within Dai Li prisons, and it is clearly no place for defenseless children.
"That is not your concern," the Khu Li replied coldly. "Do not forget your place, Kyoshi Warrior. Ba Sing Se is not under your jurisdiction."
There are only a few wooden carriages driven by ostrich-horses. It seems that the inquisitor has not order the immediate death of the older acolytes she paralyzed.
"You are quite the meddling individual. You have what you wanted, a small trip to see these peons in their natural habitat, all at my expense." He immediately spun around, that black and white face paint stared directly into the interrogated. "So, what did you learn? Have you become more accustomed with their ways? What we went through tonight is just one tiny little sect hiding underneath someone's home."
Mayumi was very hesitant in her response. She tried to say something but failed to materialize it in an orderly manner.
"I know they cannot be fought normally," she elicited their overzealous nature. Although the acolytes they encountered earlier are not much different from the ones outside Ba Sing Se, the setting dictates their behavior differently. Under the suppressive watch of the Dai Li, the usual cultists must relegate themselves as small underground groups hidden from the state's eye. But unlike a bloodthirsty marauder, local acolytes are more unpredictable. Their lack of self-preservation can also be focused on ending their lives to deny the Dai Li of any advantage. "I have imagined many scenarios, yet I never thought-"
"Your emotions are a liability," the Dai Li said. "Stifle them."
She protested, citing that the use of chi-blocking is sufficient. But the Dai Li criticized her approach as 'weakness'.
"I don't see the need to kill them all," Mayumi debated the necessity of his excessiveness. "There are harmless people such as women and children too. They will become even more distrustful if we don't show some form of leniency. "
An opponent who is backed in a corner will become desperate, and they will either fight to the death or commit an even more unpredictable act. Which is why pirates who trespassed Kyoshi Island are always swiftly taken down.
She can hear him chuckle quietly, as if the Dai Li is amused.
"Leniency?" he said in an unimpressed manner. "What do you know about leniency? I find it rather arrogant that a clueless Kyoshi Warrior from the other side of the Earth Kingdom is trying to lecture me."
Mayumi tries to be patient, knowing that quarrelling is not the right choice with these deadly enforcers. One wrong word and her spine might be torn out by those maniacal rock gauntlet. She also has to consider if her speech might affect her sister's safety.
"I am not trying to belittle you," she said diplomatically. "I agree that the nature of your work is not fully compatible with my trainings, this is simply a suggestion."
"Then I will implore you to adhere to my own advice," the Dai Li stated coldly. "A quiet mouth and observant eyes is something that would be more helpful than a fool who wastes her time on pointless compassion."
"I was simply demonstrating restraint that might save me from shedding blood!"
The Dai Li remained silent, contemplating on this notion. She thought he might view her approach in a more reasonable light.
"And where have your act of restraint gotten you and your people?" he riposted. "Trust is a fickle thing. You are senile to even believe these worthless peons can understand logic and reason. Hubris have blinded your judgement, for not even the children of these seditionist sectarians can be considered harmless. I gave the Firebender's journal so that you may understand about the past. Those that seeks to corrupt a society should receive no mercy and must be handled without the burden of useless principles." He moved closer, looking down at the Kyoshi Warrior. "I hope you don't make the same mistake as your foolish mother. Temper without intelligence makes a witless warrior. What is the point of honing swordsmanship if the enemy will outsmart you?"
"You!" Mayumi gripped the sword handle. Although her face remains calm, the urge of unsheathing the dao remains strong. One wrong move and her sister might be in danger, so restraint is just as important as her ferocity.
The Dai Li turned around again, confirming that the other enforcers have completed their task. It's as if nothing has ever happened near Wang's residence. Under the cover of the night, they worked with full efficiency. But this repetitive and daunting task of constantly destroying illegal assemblages may never see an end. So long as their 'Celestial Master' can exert spirituel influence over the followers, the acolytes who survived the Dai Li's purges will just replenish their numbers.
The mortal flesh can be killed, but ideas cannot be easily stifled.
"I suppose now would be a good time to conclude this eye-opening excursion," the Dai Li stated. "Return to your quarters for now."
He leaped off the pagoda tower. An alarmed Mayumi rushed to the edge, looking down to see that he has disappeared entirely. She doesn't know where he headed, since one neighborhood in Lower Ring is larger than walled towns. These Earthbenders who applied their founder's secret arts have perfected the art of stealth to disturbing proportions.
But she wondered if there are any merits in forsaking some of her own principles. Mayumi thought about it. In the end, if the situation involves Satchiko being in danger, then it would certainly be easier to do the unthinkable.
...
At the first sound of morning bird chirping on the tree, Shan emerged from his study. Donned in his usual white changshan, the young scholar walked into the courtyard. He is greeted by Mayumi, who just so happens to exit her room, appearing to be physically tired.
"Morning Shan," she tried to conceal the exhaustion in the voice. Despite this meagre performance, the dark area around the eyes is already a dead giveaway.
"Morning," the scholar replied without looking at her. He didn't inquire what transpired last night that led to the loss of sleep. For this scholar is more concerned about news from the Gan Jin patriarch.
Despite not yet publicly instated as a member of city's administration, the protege is already partially invested in the patrimonial aspect of the gentry. This marriage union between the Ganjinese heir and Lady Qian Jin is one of the many intricate pieces that aim to bring balance to the delicate relationship between various clans. Thus, directly affect the city's politics.
Shan savored a cup of tea as he stood near the stone table. He pondered for second, before conversing to the one who made this delectable brew.
"What do you think about Lady Qian Jin?" he asked unexpectedly. "Do you think this union between two major players of the Upper Ring will come to fruition? After all, yours truly has played a rather direct role in dictating the outcome. It is therefore unfortunate that my work may not accurately depict the noblewoman."
It is rather strange for a high classed scholar to discuss politics with a peasant girl who has no such experience. Mayumi simply noted the overprotective nature of the parents, concealing their daughter behind their estate walls.
"Such is the life of many noblewomen in the Upper Ring," the scholar said. "Even if this strategic marriage between two households can free her from that predicament, there might be a chance she will still be constrained behind another estate's wall."
It truly depends on the decision-making of the husband. For Upper Ring citizens, it is often difficult for women to venture outside their homes without the permission of the household's head. Traditional values are often used as the excuse. Why should these delicate noble lady step foot out of the estate? The audacious task of visiting the markets can do performed by servants.
"General Sun Bin is a member of the Council of Five. He is not a native to Ba Sing Se, but someone who travelled here as the states begun to fracture." Shan explained the history of this particular individual, elaborating why Lady Qian Jin is so sheltered from the world. "He is actually a cripple with smashed kneecaps. Words say that this was due to false accusations. All those years of climbing the city's hierarchy is a slow and painful journey, but he nonetheless attained high rank. I can actually respect his perseverance. I can also understand why he wish to safeguard his daughter."
Mayumi pondered. Lady Qian Jin is essentially being imprisoned in her own home. While that is safe, a life in solitude is also not a good one to live.
But there is something she wish to understand more, primarily why the scholar is so fixated on this specific union. "Shan, I have a question of my own if you do not mind."
"Proceed," he said.
"I know you distaste the petty charade between all these prominent families, but why are you helping them?"
She can see Shan taking a moment to think. After working for him, she noticed that this scholar dislikes flatteries and obligatory compliments, but nonetheless have to accept them for the sake of maintaining public appearances. The Upper Ring is filled with this, as a Zhuangyuan, he can insult some and disrespect others within acceptable boundaries.
"I am not exactly helping them, if you can even understand my words," he moved to the table and refilled another cup of tea. "Unlike the vast majority of scholarly gentry, I am not a curator of traditional family lineages. What is done now are just my response to the environment dominated by these clans. To me, a servant of the state must dutifully fulfill their roles without diluting it with personal interests. As I already mentioned to your sister, the Earth Kingdom is stricken with patrimonialism that hinders the creation of a true meritocratic society. Most states on the continent may choose to select its leaders based on family ties rather than candidates with good records. I am simply working with what I have now. The deeply entrenched family lineages of the Upper Ring cannot be undone easily. It might take years to reduce their influence in all aspects of the government. The Ximen family alone has their members occupy many positions in the bureaucracy."
"But isn't the Keju supposed to eliminate this problem?" Mayumi asked. "Selecting individuals based on their capability rather than family background is the essence of the civil service examination."
Shan agrees with her observations. But he further emphasized that officials, bureaucrats and military generals are all people. Since they all attained high ranking positions in the city, it is inevitable that clan patrimonialism will influence their loyalty to the state.
"I simply cannot overstate the number of civil servants whose loyalty to their family led to a dynasty's downfall. Personal interest, greed and the masquerade of a court free of corruption has led to the demise of many kingdoms." Shan allowed his legalistic side to show, endorsing a world where family lineages hold no sway in a realm's governance. "I believe the Keju Exam's biggest flaw is that it failed to account the gentry's inherit advantage. It is obvious that the chance for success is better for those who can afford good teachers. How can one expect the peasantry to consistently become civil servants if they are busy tending the fields? Despite this system, it can still produce officials who works against the state. I doubt you would understand much of this."
Mayumi wanted to open her mouth and proclaim that she is fully aware. But doing so will dismantle the carefully created facade of an illiterate Lower Ring citizen, potentially drawing unwanted attention. She almost exposed herself because of Shan.
From the historical record from her father's books, she learnt that a major weakness of a state may not always be found in their military. Strong military institutions can be hindered by corrupt and political meddling. A general can be the greatest strategist yet can still be killed by those who are supposed to be their allies.
Monarch of the past will rely on court officials to offer advice on governance. But those officials will not always act in their leader's interest. There are many cases across history where great military commanders are executed as a result of court intrigues, dooming the kingdom to a moronic act.
"Shan, people will obviously care for their family more than the state itself," Mayumi implored the legalistic man. "It is natural."
"Of course, for there are incentives. But when the situation is favorable, it is easy for people to betray their own kin. It's all about personal interest that motivates us."
He completely twisted her words into a more legalistic perspective of the world. The Earth Kingdom philosophy of Fajia legalism stood in contrast to the traditional value in devoting oneself to the family. Scholars like Shan that endorses this tyrannical school of thought is such a rarity, that the mere act of even publicly supporting it will incur the suspicion. Most scholarly gentry and Earth Sages detest the philosophy that undermines the family structure. They consider themselves custodians of patrimonialism, maintaining the family lineages that oppose a strict meritocratic view on how society should be governed. Shan is lucky that the Upper Ring are deeply enamored by his calligraphy skills. Upper Ring citizens are willing to pay handsomely for the scholar's works. Yet at this current point, he can only maneuver within the limits of what the clans would permit. After all, many of the gentry occupy vital positions such as the military and economic front. But the young protege can still combat the influence of other clans by refusing marriage alliances, which are all obvious attempts to secure the Zhuangyuan's loyalty in future politics.
Loud sound from the doors made them both turn to the siheyuan's entrance. Someone is using the doorknockers, not even being subtle about it.
"Is anyone there?" asked a youth voice. "I bear news from the Gan Jin patriarch!"
Shan instantly narrowed his gaze. "The fool will embarrass us all with such carelessness," he muttered darkly. The gossiping nature of the Upper Ring will force many people to talk carefully, conveying their intentions in a subtle and concise manner. It is preferable for others to know less about your secrets. Saving 'face' is very important.
Mayumi arrived at the double door and opened it for the messenger. The young man is donned in a white and gold attire that is famous for the Gan Jin Tribe. He is clearly a clansman that serves as the patriarch's messenger.
They all met in the courtyard's center. Shan sat down on a stone chair and drink tea as if nothing has happened. Mayumi suspects that this is likely due to a small amount of pressure. If the scholar's artwork and poem failed to impress Lady Qian Jin, then this doomed marriage union will also reduce his standing with the patriarch himself.
She stood next to him, waiting in anticipation.
The messenger bowed, performing the commonly seen 'fist and palm' salute.
"Greetings White Scholar," the young man began in a dignified fashion. "I bear important news from our patriarch."
"Let us skip the formalities," Shan ordered. "I mean no disrespect to his excellency. But please, proceed to unravel the news."
"Very well then," the young Ganjinese took no offense. "I came bringing very auspicious news. Our Young Master Gong Zi will marry the esteemed Lady Qian Jin, daughter of General Sun Bin. The Patriarch will hold a grand wedding ceremony at his estate, and he has humbly invited you to participate and celebrate this with us. Your presence would be certainly make this joyous event even more special." Having the attendance of a young but talented scholar can also be reign in prestige. Since Shan is a highly respected individual and a Zhuangyuan ranked scholar, his presence would reinforce the legitimacy of this wedding in the eyes of the other aristocracy.
Mayumi stood by and watch Shan finished the tea. He calmly emptied the cup to the last drop, and then rose up with his hands placed behind the back. She wonders if he would react positively to his desired outcome.
"Good." He stated without much enthusiasm, almost like a man simply grateful that an unpleasant event has passed. "Inform him that we accept his invitation." Shan said to the messenger.
The Ganjinese temporarily glanced at Mayumi's dress. The poor repairs and sowed on fabric do not fit the green color. It is an eyesore to anyone that adheres to an unhealthy standard of cleanliness.
"Ahem," Shan pressured him to reestablish eye contact. The messenger quickly lowered his head, knowing that by simply glancing at Mayumi's stagnating dress may have conveyed the wrong message.
"This bodyguard will be present for my safety. I doubt you or the patriarch will object to this arrangement." Shan's stare is rather...intimidating. Of course, the young Gan Jin would not oppose the scholar's decision. Most citizens of Upper Ring would hire someone to serve as a protector. A scholar is good at writing, but they are no fighters. It is therefore reasonable to be accompanied by someone who is at least skilled in martial arts.
"N-no! Not at all White Scholar!" The messenger boy finally noticed the dao strapped at Mayumi's waist. The blade is a clear sign that she received special permission to bear arms. "I will immediately transfer this back to our patriarch."
Mayumi then escorted him to the exit. After completing that ordeal, she came back to ask a very important question.
"Did he leave a letter? It would be useful to know when the wedding will take place." Mayumi scanned the courtyard. Shan managed to clean up the damage made by Jin Lian, and it seems that the messenger has a poor memory.
"Go and get him," Shan said as he poured another cup. "I suspect this obligatory nuptial will occur in just a few days. There will be many important officials present, especially those who have cordial relations with the Gan Jin. Nakano, while I do not believe there will be much unexpected commotion, your presence will be necessary to guard against possible disruptions that may threaten my safety."
The Gan Jin tribe has produced many talented individuals who serve in the city's administration. Their exceptional talent and prestige have naturally incurred rivalry from the other prominent faction, the ever so detested Ximen family. It is unlikely that clan will be invited. But who knows what that delinquent, Ximen Qing, is planning. As the future heir of Ba Sing Se's most prominent household, the young man will not be idle as his future rivals forges greater bonds.
