A Drop In The Ocean
Chapter 6
Another Meeting With the Rabid Chihuahua

"So, you've met Nereus before I take it?" Triton asked in an effort to break the awkward silence that had fallen over them as soon as they boarded the bus that would take them to San Francisco Bay. They had stopped at the beach previously and Triton had been kind enough to ask (more like order) a crab to tell them where the Sea god's position was.

It had taken Percy much to convince Triton that they would attract way too much attention if they swam all the way to San Francisco until finally, after half an hour of relentless arguing he admitted grudging defeat in the face of her sound logic and unmatched stubbornness.

Just thinking about it Percy couldn't help but direct a smug smirk in the direction of her companion, who just shot her a look of impatience. Yes, one thing she had learned about Triton was that despite his gruff, arrogant attitude he possessed a curiosity rivaling hers. Apparently he couldn't stand not knowing something, so, using this to her advantage, Percy turned it into her mission to annoy him even more than before.

"Yep, I have." She answered nonchalantly, picking invisible dirt from under her nails, suppressing the urge to smirk at his expecting expression. It took him a moment to realize that she had no plans to explain further and with the corner of her eye, Percy saw him flush slightly in anger.

She had been surprised really (considering that the first time she had seen him, his skin had been green) how easily he flushed red when he was angry. Absentmindedly she wondered if she could make him blush but quickly chased the thought away. Now was so not the time.

"Will you tell me?" Triton insisted next to her. "Please?" The last word was said through gritted teeth and Percy shot him a bright grin, before sighing a bit over-dramatically.

"I met Nereus three years ago, when we were on a quest to save Artemis who had been captured by Atlas. We needed information and Apollo was kind enough to tell me where I could get it." She smirked at Triton's surprised expression. "I don't think Nereus likes me much though." Percy suppressed a snort. That was an understatement. The old sea god positively hated her.

For her surprise though, Triton snorted with a wry smile. "He doesn't like anyone. Even his own grandson."

Percy frowned slightly, trying to understand what he meant before it dawned on her. Of course! Amphitrite had been one of Nereus' daughters before she married Poseidon (thinking about her stepmother still made her uncomfortable) which made Triton his grandson. She would have been glad about this new realization if her companion had not oh-so-subtly hinted that his grandfather had no love lost for him.

"Well, I don't think he likes dad very much either." Percy said hoping to sound comforting though it didn't work out very well. Triton just gave her a dark look and said nothing. She took it as a hint that the conversation was over and tore her gaze away from her companion and back towards the other passengers in silent observation.

She had never been a fan of people-watching, her ADHD protesting against any peaceful occupation, but well, there was nothing better to do. She desperately wished she had remembered to take her IPod so at least she would have some music to listen to but in her hurry she had left it back in her apartment.

A strange feeling crept up her neck as well as the sensation of being watched. At once her every battle instinct, sharpened and nurtured by the war, sprung into action and her muscles stiffened, preparing for battle. Slowly and as unsuspiciously as she could, the demigod twisted her neck and looked straight in the eyes of a familiar fat-lady, who held a rabid-looking Chihuahua on her lap.

"Oh shit." Were the first words that slipped out of Percy mouth and Triton looked towards her sharply, just now noticing her tense posture. He followed her gaze to the back of the bus, cursing in Greek.

Immediately, Percy's hand shot towards her pocket, ready to draw Riptide out, but another hand wrapped around her wrist, halting any movement. Shocked, the demigod looked up towards Triton's face, which was surprisingly near.

"Do you really want to initiate a fight in the middle of a bus full of mortals?" He hissed in her ear and the girl cursed her teenage hormones when a shudder ran through her body. "Our task is to remain unnoticed, not attract everyone's attention."

"Sorry to burst your bubble, but it seems we've already attracted someone's attention or they wouldn't be here." She nodded towards the monster that hadn't torn her gaze away from the pair the whole time.

Triton gritted his teeth angrily but did not remove his hands from her. "Just wait for them to make the first move, alright?"

Percy nodded despite her mind's screams that such tactic could get them killed. Or rather, get her killed, because Triton was immortal after all. Slowly, she drew her hand out of her pocket, shrugging off the god's hold. She shifted in her seat, twisting sideways, casually leaning against Triton so she could keep an eye on Echidna. At first she felt the god stiffen next to her, before he obviously realized what she was doing and moved into a more comfortable position, wrapping a casual arm around her middle.

Percy tried to look nonchalant about it, keeping up the pretense of a lovesick young couple, when in fact she wanted to blush bright red. The skin of his arm was warm against her middle and his chest was hard and solid against her back and she was having surprisingly hard time focusing on her task.

His breath caressed her cheek as he exhaled and blood rushed to her face. Her grip on the pen tightened.

You are not attracted to him. She ground out silently. You are not attracted to the arrogant, thick headed, annoying sea god who plays the role of affectionate boyfriend a tad bit too well.

She was not sure how long they sat this way (well, she was half-lying against him) until she noticed Echidna rise to her feet. Immediately every distracting thought fled Percy's mind.

"She's moving." She whispered back and knew Triton had heard her by the way his hand tightened slightly against her stomach before sliding away. A sigh escaped her at the loss of contact and she prayed he hadn't heard. She'd had enough mortification for now.

She forced herself to straighten, her body coiling in preparation for an attack. The Chihuahua was barking at her feet by now, foam running down its bared teeth.

"My son remembers you Percy Jackson." Echidna said and instinctively Percy rose to her feet, feeling Triton copy the movement behind her.

"What are you doing here?" The demigod asked, chasing away the memories of her last encounter with the mother of monsters. "Did Zeus send you?"

"Zeus?" The monster laughed. "I no longer serve the king of Olympus, little hero."

" .you?" Triton growled out, speaking up for the first time. Echidna's eyes narrowed at him before she snarled, showing her monstrously sharp teeth.

"It is not for you to know, sea godling. It is time for your sister to die!"

As if by command, the Chihuahua transformed into the familiar, rabid, fire-breathing beast Percy had faced almost six years ago.

"Duck!" She heard Triton command and she did so, just in time as celestial bronze trident sailed over her head. But Chimera was not one to be defeated easily. He dodged, people screaming as he crashed into them. Percy had just enough time to draw out Riptide before the giant dog was upon her, its claws digging into her skin with bruising force. Thankful for the additional strength the Achilles'' curse provided, the girl kicked out her legs, throwing the monster into the side of the bus.

The whole vehicle titled to the side and the passengers shrieked, while the driver fought his best to take control of the situation before they crashed.

Glancing to the side, Percy saw Triton locked in a fight with Echidna herself, keeping her busy while Percy struggled with Chimera. Before she could take the time to admire her half-brother's fighting style, the demigod found herself dodging a column of flames, aimed straight towards her face.

Her hand flew towards the singed ends of her hair and she cursed, before dragging her mind back towards the fight at hand. With surprising ease for something so big, Chimera jump forward, his jaws closing around Percy shoulder, dragging them both right through the window. The demigod released a scream at the sight of the rapidly approaching hard ground, trying to twist her body in a way that would make landing easier but the monster's grip was relentless.

Percy's back hit the ground with bone-shattering strength, her shirt ripped to shreds by the tiny rock, which, thankfully, missed her Achilles' heel by millimeters. Her head hit the ground with a loud crack and red haze of pain clouded her vision, rendering her pretty useless. She gasped for air, her breath having been knocked out by the fall, knowing that her end must be coming.

She knew she was in no condition to fight off Chimera's attack. Hell, she was in no condition to even twitch her finger, much less defeat one of the strongest monsters in Greek mythology.

Through blurry eyes she watched as the monster's jaws opened right above her head, flames already forming in its throat, when it suddenly stiffened. Half-unconscious she saw the dog-like beast disintegrate in a shower of golden dust, not even having the strength to cough when her throat itched.

"Percy!" Triton's face appeared in her line of vision and she squinted to see him better. Was that concern? No, she must be delusional. "Percy are you alright?"

What'd you think? She wanted to answer but before any sound left her lips a dark veil fell in front of her eyes and she promptly passed out.
