Chapter 29
Kuvira couldn't deny she cared about Suyin, but everyone did understand that she couldn't open herself up to her again. There was just too much pain and she couldn't imagine going through that again. Bataar was always supportive and she didn't know what she would do without him. He was her best friend, her lover, and husband. He was the most important person in her life. He had always been there for her, even when they were young and only friends. Even though Suyin always referred to her as her daughter, she never thought of her kids as her siblings. Bataar never thought of her as a sister. They were best friends until it turned into something more. It always seemed they were meant to be together. They complemented each other in everyway. They were going to need each other for their upcoming mission. They were going with Wu to help him stabilize the Great Uniter riots. Bataar was very vocal that she had to be careful because everyone knew what she looked like. She had been the Great Uniter and her face was the one everyone remembered. He had been her second in command, but not many people would be able to recognize him as such. She was in far more danger than he was, and he worried, but also knew this was something she had to do.
"I just got off the phone with Lin and she said she will be stopping by after she has lunch with my mother. She said Wu just finalized all the preparations and we will be set to leave next week. It got everything done faster than I expected. Things must be pretty bad, he usually takes his time." Bataar stated. "Alright, I know Korra said she is coming. Having her there should make things go more smoothly, at least I hope it will." Kuvira responded. "Are you nervous?" Bataar asked. "You have no idea. It has been so long since I've been in the public eye and don't forget the last time isn't one I would like to remember. I am still wondering how he forgave me after my performance at his coronation." Kuvira remarked. "We all made mistakes and you took responsibility and he sees the real you. He is a surprising likeably person and very open minded, not to mention one of your fans." Bataar laughed. Bataar always loved making Kuvira blush. It was a rare sight that always made him smile. "You do remember that Wu told you my mother is also going to Ba Sing Se to help us. Are you sure you are going to be able to work with her if needed.?" Bataar asked. "I owe it to Wu to and to our people to do anything I have to, regardless of my personal feelings. I will just put my Great Uniter face on. I have been getting better at controlling my emotions now that I have had time to process them. That doesn't mean that I am looking forward to it." Kuvira replied.
Lin never understood why Suyin insisted on meeting for lunch every week. It's not like they didn't see each other. Suyin was waiting for her at the same table at the hotel restaurant they always ate at and like usual her food was already ordered. "Hey sis, how have you been holding up?" Lin asked. "To be honest I don't feel comfortable with Bataar and Kuvira going to Ba Sing Se with all the riots. The Great Uniter supports that attacked them during their honeymoon should be a warning how dangerous they are and Kuvira was shot just a few weeks ago, it's too much too soon. Then there's the question of how they found them to begin with because Bataar told me they didn't tell anyone other than the usual where they were going. You said it yourself, this is extremely dangerous, but then again since when does Kuvira shy away from danger." Suyin vented. "Sounds like someone else I know," Lin smirked, "So Wu mentioned that you offered to go along to help." "Yes, I offered to help in any way I can, and he jumped at it. Evidently the situation is really bad and they need all the people they can get. Wu also mentioned that you would going as well which I think is a good idea." Suyin admitted. "Wu told me that you were going, and I am just wondering how Kuvira is going to react to this." Lin stated.
"Bataar told me he spoke with Kuvira about it. She basically agreed to do whatever Wu thinks is necessary." Suyin stated. "That's good to hear. I know Kuvira is always very senseable at least what I know about her. That kid is amazing. I remember watching the two of you trying to kill each other when Opal and I came to rescue you, and you certainly taught her a lot. Compared to her bending skills now, she would be considered an amatuar then. She has surpassed mom's bending abilties in both earth and metals." Lin boasted.
Suyin had heard Lin boasting about Kuvira's bending abilities and said she had developed some new skills, but for Lin to say she was better than Toph was something else. "What do you mean sh is better than mom? Do you have any idea what you are saying?" Suyin asked. She had never seen anyone who would remotely compare to Toph and now to claim that Kuvira was better. She taught Kuvira how to earth and metal bend and she was a prodigy, but there was no way she was nearly as good as her mother. "Yes, Suyin I know exactly what I am saying. You have no idea how good she is now. Everytime I spar with her, I end up on my ass and that is only because she is being nice. I have never seen anything like it and just in case you are wondering, she learned her new tricks by herself. Don't take my word for it, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to see her in action when we get to Ba Sing Se. From what Wu tells me, some of the outlying areas are like a war zone. We are going to need someone with Kuvira's bending abilities." Lin affirmed. "If she is as good as you say she is, then I am very proud of her. She has always had a lot of potential." Suyin replied. "If we are leaving next week I am going to have to start packing." Suyin stated. "Same here. Suyin, have you taken that necklace off? You are wearing it everytime I see you." Lin asked. "No, I haven't had the heart to take it off. It is a constant reminder of Kuvira. I feel like at least I have a part of her with me." Suyin sighed. "It looks like it was designed especially for you." Lin smiled. "See you later sis." Lin hugged Suyin goodbye and decided she had better go see Bataar and Kuvira to finalize their plans.
