Chapter 5
At Harry was thinking on the offer Rick had just made for him. As it had been kind of out of the blue, and wasn't something he had expected to be offered; not all things considering. At the moment he was in the house he had just helped the rest of the group both defend and clear out.
Everyone in the group had piled in there after removing all the Walkers that had been nearby it so as to not attract any more of them; at least not while they were occupied with what they were currently doing. Or at least that was Harry reasons for doing so.
Meaning at the moment Harry really wasn't too worried about a Walker suddenly spring out at him while he gathered his thoughts. But at the same time he wasn't exactly comfortable with the fact the door behind him had been closed. Even if at the same time he did understand just why it had been done in the first place.
At the moment the group seemed to alright with the fact Harry was thinking over the offer Rick had just given him instead of answering it immediately. Though he could tell a few of them were a bit irritated over the fact at the same time. As if they felt Harry should know his answer already, well that or they could have just been irritated over everything that was going on at the moment; Harry wasn't completely sure about that.
Not that that bit really mattered to Harry as he was gathering his thoughts and was taking full advantage of the time he was being offered. As he wondered just how to respond to what he had been asked. While at the same time also wondering how to bring up the supplies he had just gotten from the story not too far from here without rising too many flags as he did so.
As he was thinking on this, Harry watched the reactions of the rest of the group. All of which were standing behind Rick still slightly tense from the battler that had just taken place. Something he was doing so he could see how they were reacting to what Rick was currently offering him.
As he didn't want to be part of a group that didn't want him as he was, and not what they wanted him to be. He had done something similar to that once before and it had turned out to be hell for him so he wasn't too eager to put himself in a similar situation; especially not if he could help it.
It was because of this Harry quickly noticed that not everyone in the group was exactly happy with said offer. Nor did it look like several of them agreed with what Rick was offering him in the first place. In fact, most of them looked that weary about letting him in their group.
Which was something that Harry could understand and even agree with. As they had all the reasons in the world to be wary about letting a stranger join their group. Especially one they knew so littler about in the first place.
Even if he was rather confused why not one of them where voicing said concerns before figuring it maybe because they didn't want to cause any disruptions in the groups harmony as Harry could see that Rick was clearly the group's leader with perhaps Daryl being the second in charge.
At the same time even as he thought of this Harry also noticed that along with those that were wary about letting him joining, but still seemed at least willing to give him a chance none the less, there were also those Harry could tell really seemed to utterly loath the idea of Harry joining the group in question. Why Harry had no idea about, as he couldn't exactly recall doing anything to insult or even really talking to this member in question.
But because of this and the fact despite really thinking on what Daryl had said Harry finally gave and an answer to what he had been asking. Having been able to put his thoughts into words.
"I don't think that'd be a too good of an idea. You all do not know me and honestly I don't know you. Yes, I have helped you out when I say you in trouble and I could do the same again in the future. Hell, I just did, but I don't think any of us would feel too comfortable around each other for longer periods of time. And yes I know we could get to know each other if I joined to group making it so that everyone wouldn't be too uncomfortable in the long run bit truly I feel more comfortable on my own."
Here Harry paused in what he was saying and realized he was starting to both get off the point he had been trying to make and starting to ramble a bit. Something Harry knew he was rather prone to do considering he never had much of anyone to talk to. Realizing this, he cleared his throat slightly before getting back on track on what he had wanted to say
"Speaking of being willing to help if we met up… When I was searching through a nearby store, I noticed it had been picked clean of anything I would want. But at the same time there were several supplies your group may have wanted. Things such as prenatal vitamins, feminine hygiene, and several baby supplies. Including a couple of baby blankets, some baby formula as well as a few bottles. Nothing I could use but I did think of your group when I grabbed them, or even maybe running across a similar group who could use them. Luck would have it I ran or really heard you not long after I grabbed the supplies in the first place. So while I might not be joining you I don't mind giving you the supplies in question."
As he said this Harry was cautious, as he knew the group had never mentioned Lori being pregnant and he had simply noticed it by the way she was acting. And because of this they could lash out at him because of his knowledge he now had on what was one of the most vulnerable members of their group; made worse by the fact he had just refused to join them.
But at the same time, even while he acknowledged this, Harry was also beginning to wonder just why the hell he was being so kind to this group of strangers. Why was he giving them his own supplies and even going out of his way to get them supplies he had no need for himself. Was he so starved for company? And if so why did he still not want to join their group when it was offered to him? Was he really that weary of trusting others? And if that was also true what did this mean for him?
As he was thinking on this, Harry was knocked from his thoughts as a member from the group, who was still in front of him, and the one Harry could tell earlier loathed the idea of hi, joining the group earlier, suddenly spoke out; he eyes all but spitting fire as she did so.
"What do you think you're too good for our group? What are we so pathetic you have to give us pity supplies, so you feel better about yourself. How Cruel are you? How Pathetic do you take us for? Why would we want those supplies when they're the only ones you're going to give us in the first place? What, love lording your supplies over us? Well I for one think you can take those supplies and shove them –" Whatever else was going to be said was cut off as Rick quickly jumped into action.
"LORI! Don't say something like that! Not when he was nice enough to give us supplies any supplies in the first place. He certainly didn't have to, and we should be grateful that he did! Not many people would do that especially considering what was going on. And we do need the supplies he is offering. And if he doesn't want to join our group we can't force him to, just hope we can meet again in the future."
This last bit was said in a calmer voice and directed more at Harry himself than Lori. Who now seemed to be glare in the direction Harry was at, but at the same time didn't seem to voice out any more of what she was thinking. Though it was clear she didn't agree in the least bit with what Rick had just said the sneer on her lips said that much.
Seeing this and not wanting to cause any more drama Harry did his best to ignore Lori. All the while wondering just what he had done to make her so angry and him and why for that matter did being around her was starting to remind him of his Aunt so strongly. Before deciding it didn't matter, not in the long run.
Instead, Harry pulled off the backpack he had on, and the one he hid one of his bottom pouches in. And the one he had just remembered to sling on his back before taking off when he had heard what he knew now was Lori's scream.
It was something he had done as a just in case other saw him when he was out getting supplies. As it would be suspicious if they saw him with several supplies that wouldn't have fit in the pouches he had bringing out, and bring up a lot of questions at the same time. Questions a backpack wouldn't.
As Harry knew it looked like the normal pouches he used would hold maybe two or three cans at most, and there was no way he was about to try explaining space expansion charms ,or any kind of magic, for that matter, to anyone. That was just a big old Nope from him.
So thankful for the fact he had the backpack in question, and suddenly feeling really tired of it all, Harry started getting the supplies he had just gotten at the store out of it; to give them to the group in front of him. Even if at the same time he was almost wishing he had left the supplies in question at the store and instead had decided to point it out to the group in question to get themselves instead; it would have probably caused less drama that way.
Once he gotten everything that he was going to give Rick and his group out, something he made sure to do as quickly as possible, he just as hastily handed it all over to both Rick and Daryl. Both of which seemed to be the main ones carrying the supplies of the group.
As soon as Harry was done doing this he turned to head away. Before biting his lip and turning to face the group he was leaving deciding to give one last piece of advice be for he left, rather than take it or not was up to them.
"I know it seems a bit rude of me to say no, but honestly it just feels safer for me on my own. Yes, I do not have anyone to watch my back, but on that same note I don't have to worry about some stabbing me in the back either. The world as it right now has made it so the worst of a lot of people have come out." Here seeing the insulting looks on several of the others faces decided to speedily continue on before someone couldn't bit their tongue any longer.
"Now, I can see your group isn't like that and from what little I've seen you seem to be good people. So with that in mind, I want to tell you to be careful about that. There are a lot of people out there who will take advantage of that kindness; that goodness. As there was a reason that one of the firs thoughts that popped I my head when I heard Lori scream like she did was that this was a trap of some sort." Here Harry gave a slight wince as he recalled just why he had thought it was a trap, and the scare that had caused him, before forcing himself to continue on with what he was saying.
"There are a lot of people out there that are going to be the cruelest they can be both because of survival as well as just because they can. Seeing as there isn't any real laws out there to make them face the consequences of their actions." As he said this a rather bitter smirk made its way on his face as he finished off his warning.
" From what I've seen, it seems like the worst of civilizations are the once that thrive in times like this. I have come across several group like that…ones who torture, kill, and rape, for the hell of it… I guess what I am trying to say is, be careful and be weary of others. Not everyone is as nice as you or as I may seem to be."
This said Harry began to walk away, as he knew he needed to get away and get back on the road as he wanted to get back to his home before winter started. Which unfortunately was something that was closing in a lot faster than Harry would have liked.
Not only that but he did want to get at least some distance in between from where he started this morning and to where he was going to rest tonight; not wanting to waster and entire day if he could help it. So yes he really needed to get moving.
Sadly, this seemed to be something that Harry couldn't do as he wanted. As it seemed Lori was not able to bite her tongue any longer and apparently she really didn't like what Harry had just said. Because taking no care of the fact that loud noises attracted the danger they had just gotten rid of, aka walkers, she began screaming at Harry. Something that hear all the clearer outside as Harry had opened to door to leave the building they had been hiding it.
"How can you say things like that? Like things aren't already bad enough with all the walking dead going around trying to EAT US! But you have got to try and scare us with things like that. What, like you think if you can scare us enough, we'll want to follow you around? Be thankful to YOU, treat you like your some kind of king for your supposed generosity of giving us the scraps you don't want yourself-"
Again Lori was cut off this time both by Rick, Daryl and worse yet several Walkers she had managed to attract to the group with all the noise she had been making. Harry seeing this, gave a quite sigh to himself before springing in to action along with Rick, Glenn, Maggie and Daryl who were all able to deal with the Walkers that had been drawn towards them.
Harry seeing this and seeing that the group seemed to alright decided to leave again but not before throwing a parting couple of words to the group and if they seemed to bug Lori more than she already was, well that was just a bonus Harry would keep to himself.
"Never wanted anything like that, and if you don't want the supplies I am not making you take them drop them off on the road or something if you want. All I was trying to say was that while there is good out there, as your group as proven so far, my luck isn't that good as it has me running into the bad for the most part. Now seeing how I seem to insult you somehow with my presence and with what I am saying, I am just going to take my leave…like I was trying to do in the first place before you said anything in the first place and drew the walkers here. Wouldn't want you bringing any more down on us, who knows how many it maybe next time."
Then Harry left hoping all the while that he didn't run into that group anytime soon. As in all honestly he found it to be too emotional draining to be around them for longer periods of time. And that they had him questioning things he hadn't before. Something that Harry really didn't want to do now or really any time soon if he could help it.
Though he did find it amusing that as he left the eye sight of the group, and what most would assume was the hearing rang of the group, he could hear Rick round on Lori for what she had said.
It seems Rick seemed to be rather irritated with her for some time, and what she had said to Harry seemed to be the straw that broke the camel's back. Though he knew it wasn't only about what she had said to him as he could hear Rick harshly saying something about someone called Randell and Shane.
Several hours later, Harry had felt he had managed to cover a good amount of distance and had even found several more stores to go through as he did so. Not completely emptying the of all things now that he knew there was a group behind him that seemed to be heading in the same direction he was; at least for the time being.
But at the same time still take a good number of supplies as well because who knew when he may need it. And despite what he was raised to be and how several people tried to forcefully shape him as Harry really wasn't going to try and point anyone else survival over his own; especially not was essentially strangers to him.
As Harry found a house to ward, trap and protect him for the night, as well as set for yet another new Apperation spot, he suddenly realized that he was about halfway back to his home. Recognizing this, Harry felt a bit of tenseness leave his body, he was making way home. He wasn't wasting his time like he had begun to fear, and if he keep it up he would be back home sooner or later.
Knowing this relaxed Harry a bit and after he had himself fully set up for the night he decided to do something he had been planning since the night before. He called up Dobby, so he could get a little more information. Information he knew he could trust as Dobby had saved his life several times during Hogwarts both before and after Harry had freed him from his own Slavery via the Malfoy's.
Not only that but he continued to serve Harry after he had been free, and had been the one to let Harry know about the tutoring he had been able to undergo in the first place. So yes, Harry knew he could trust the information Dobby would give him.
That in mind, with a quick call of Dobby, Harry waited for the house elf to appear. Something that took not even a second or two and there stood Dobby. Seeing this Harry gave the house in elf a quick hug, one that was eagerly returned before Harry asked him.
"Please tell me what's going on with our home. Have the wards settled and what exactly has the magic done to everything if it has settled."
After asking this, Harry felt the tenseness that had loosened when he found he was about halfway home start to reappear as he began to think of just what could be happening at his home. Only for that feeling to once more, slowly start to disappear as Dobby answered him.
Speaking normally as Harry had helped him with his speech the same way Dobby had helped him with some of the magical classes he ended up taking. As Harry honestly couldn't stand how he, and all other house elves seemed to speak before, something Harry had found out was because they had never been taught differently in the first place.
"The wild magic from the thieves that had attempted to break in and steal Master Harry, has settled down. Though the wards themselves as still on locked down and I am sure you can feel that yourself."
Here Dobby paused and got a nod from Harry, who was trying not to groan again at being called Master. As he knew no matter what he said that was what the house elves would call him.
And that if he tried to protest it they would just add more names to it ending with his full name being said with Master still in front of it. As despite what others may think his house elves where trolls to a degree and got amusement out of things like that. Something Harry didn't want to deal with again, at least not at the moment, so he said nothing as Dobby continued on with his report.
"When the magic from those two finally did settle and after all the mess that those two and their magic caused as cleaned up we immediately checked up on everything to see if there were any changes. And thankful there weren't any damaging or too severe changes to everything."
Hearing this bit and hearing that there had been changes caused Harry's head to jerk up and become laser focused on Dobby and what he was going to say next. Dobby seeing this and seeing that Harry was getting worried, quickly continued on.
"It was nothing too big and nothing bad at all. In fact it was mostly beneficial and the wards themselves seem to know how to best distribute the magic in ways your would have liked. Most likely because you made them by yourself and it is your magic powering them up the way they are. " Take a deep breath Dobby decided to get to the point before his master, and dear friend, could demand that of him.
"What did happen was that the wards themselves will take longer when needing a recharge and can take magic from the earth during an emergency. And if the wards are attacked out right they can lash out before someone enters them. These where the only real changes to the wards themselves that we could find. As for the other changes that did occur they were rather minor as most of the magic that had been torn out from the thieves was used up with the wards. But we were able to find out that the farm land is a bit more fertile than it had been before, and the plants seemed to grow both faster and larger even without our help in that regard. With it, they grow larger and faster than they ever had before. Not only that but the fertility seems to also extend to several of the animals on the land as well. Though thankfully not nearly just making the animals in question grow larger and healthier than they would otherwise, meaning in the long term they will be able to bare more children for longer than they would have been before. Which we can assume will have the same health and size of the parents."
Harry hearing all of this, and seeing that Dobby seemed to be looking a little drained himself, realized that the house elf in question had most likely just finished checking all of this over. As well as whatever work he had decoded to take that day.
Realizing this and knowing that being outside the wards of his home was also draining on Dobby as he was still connected to the house inside said wards to ensure he could get back Harry could really only do one thing.
" Thanks Dobby, now please get home and get some rest you need it."
After saying this Harry gave Dobby another hug before he disappeared back into the safety of their home. Something that when he thought on it, Harry would admit he was a little jealous about, as he too wished he could be there. Not that he would ever wish to trade places and have his house elves brave the dangers that was out here, just that he wished he could have the same safety they did.
Sighing a bit, Harry shook his head to get those thoughts out of his head before starting to get ready for the night. Maybe he could go get a shower in his Tent as he hadn't been able to do so the last couple of days like he had wanted.
Mostly because, despite how much he may dislike it, being too clean did draw attention to you. Attention Harry would rather do without for the time being especially when that attention started bringing in questions as well as threats. All of which he could honestly do without at the time.
Still a nice hot shower before bed did sound rather nice. Or at least that was what Harry was thinking before he heard the wheels of a car come screaming from somewhere nearby him; along with the sounds of both gun fire and shooting.
Harry hearing this wanted to curse himself but settled for throwing up yet another notice me not spell around both him and the area around him. All the while wondering if his luck had kicked in again as he wondered if he had ran in to Rick and his group again. Something that he honestly hadn't wanted to happen especially not this soon.
Only for him to feel his stomach drop again as he listened more carefully to what was going on outside as he heard even more shouting and gun shots. Even what sounded like what Harry swore was a motorcycle.
Hearing this and listening closely as whoever it was outside out closer Harry began to hear just what was being said and knew immediately that there was no way that was Rick's group. Or anyone who may be like them for that matter.
As the death threats, the eager hope of finding someone new, as well as the horrifying reminiscing of what they had done last time they had come across another survive. Not to mention the heavily smell of not only bad body odor, a heavy coating of blood and even worse bodily fluids filled that much in for Harry. All of this combined with what had happened earlier today made Harry wonder if he had jinxed himself with what he had said to Lori or if his luck was just that bad at the same time.
