It had been weeks since Arizona and I last communicated outside of the hospital. Even professionally she seemed to be avoiding me. Instead I found myself with her understudy and everybody knew Juyng and I never saw eye to eye in the OR.
I had just changed out of my scrubs and slipped into something a little more casual. After the long haul of a shift I just got off I was heading straight to Joe's for a drink before hibernating. I walked into the bar scanning for familiar faces. There were many. The interns were huddled in the corner playing darts. Alex and Jo were sitting in a booth playing cute and Hunt and April were up at the bar talking over a pint and a bowl of peanuts.
I headed for the other end of the bar and I signalled Joe. He knew what I wanted. I wasn't drinking alone for long before Meredith showed up looking a lot like a Zombie. "You going for the walking dead look?" I joked as Joe brought Meredith a drink too.
"Thanks joe" Meredith and I said in unison.
"I just lost that alcoholic tumour patient Webber made me take" Meredith sighed as she shot the tequila in front of her. Just as it was gone, another one arrived.
"What happened?"
"His liver was too far gone, his body was tired from all the drinking, he lost too much blood and there was nothing I could do about it" Meredith explained plain and simply before downing another shot of tequila.
I wasn't quite as hard core as Meredith. I was just having a vodka, lime and soda which had become my go to lately. Meredith and I sat in silence for a moment. Meredith mourned the loss of her patient and I... Well honestly. I was thinking about my daughter.
Meredith and I continued to chat through the night when I noticed Arizona walking through the door the attractive nurse Kate in toe. Meredith could tell I was staring at someone and briefly glanced around to see what I was staring at.
"Do you want to go?" she asked me.
I shook my head and took a sip. "No. It's fine."
"Has she talked to you yet?"
"Not since I told her about Penny and I" I stated. "I could just be paranoid but I swear she has been fobbing me off to Juyng at work too. She knows I can't stand the guy. I have barely seen Sofia and when I do usually I just pick her up from school so we don't actually have to talk" I explained to Meredith.
"Just give it time. Maybe she is just coming to terms with everything" Meredith said in a hopeful tone.
I watched as Arizona and Kate played pool. They joked and laughed and given every opportunity touched one another. I knew Arizona was a flirt, she always had been but watching her with Kate made me think this was more than just a little bit of fun.
"Look at the way she touches her" I mumbled.
Meredith looked then looked straight back to me. "STOP WATCHING!" Meredith grumped.
I couldn't help but watch. Arizona set up to take a shot and Kate slipped past her groping her ass as she leant over her pretending to help with her shot. I hated watching but I couldn't stop. Arizona kinked her head up slightly and the two kissed briefly before Kate tapped her ass playfully and let her make her shot.
"I need to go to the toilet" I said as I finished the rest of my drink and stood to my feet.
"Well I'll be here but after this drink I might shoot home. Bailey has been sick and Amelia is working the morning shift" Meredith explained to me even though I was barely listening.
I headed straight for the bathroom and instead of going to a cubical I went straight to the sink and washed my face. I leant over the basin as water dripped from my face. I was feeling sick and not because of the alcohol. I stood to the sound of the door opening. I guess I shouldn't have been shocked to see Arizona standing in the doorway.
"Hey" she said as she headed towards the cubical.
"Hey" I responded.
Arizona walked past me as if nothing had happened. Like we hadn't been sleeping together for the past few months. Like she didn't care.
"Are you and Kate together?" I asked stopping Arizona in her tracks. I turned around as did she. Arizona didn't seem bothered by the question. Maybe she was expecting it.
"No" she responded without skipping a beat.
"That's not what you want to know though is it?" Arizona questioned.
"Are you sleeping with her?"
"We have, yes" Arizona answered honestly.
"How long?" I asked curiously.
"Not while I was sleeping with you" she admitted.
Relief washed over me. I'm not sure why seeing as our arrangement meant she had every right to sleep with Kate.
"Are we over? Whatever this was, is it done?" I asked nervously. I was pretty sure I knew the response but I needed to hear it from her mouth.
"Kate is easy" Arizona said simply. "Kate doesn't come with the past we have. Kate comes with a clean slate."
Arizona had answers, but they weren't the answers to my questions. "Do you love her?" I asked.
Arizona shook her head immediately. "No….. Maybe one day though"
"Why did you pull away from me? You just stopped talking to me after that time"
"I know" Arizona interrupted. "You know why I pulled away."
"No I don't know why. You don't talk to me" I reminded her. Arizona had always been difficult to read. She disguised her feelings so well. Sometimes she disguised them so well she didn't even know what she was feeling.
"Rule. If any of us start to catch serious feelings and things get complicated this had to end" Arizona quoted one of the rules. "Things got serious Callie. I didn't catch feelings I didn't need to. They were already there. Things got complicated because I have and always will love you. Kate is easy. Kate and I have a chance to have a relationship that doesn't come with all our problems. I may not ever love her the way I love you but maybe that is a good thing. Loving you has caused us so much hurt Calliope."
"Okay" I said quietly as I held back a breakdown. The moment was interrupted when Kate walked in.
The sad face that occupied Arizona's face was quickly replaced by a beaming smile. One of her hidden smiles.
Kate kissed the side of Arizona's mouth as Arizona just stared at me. "Hurry up babe, have to finish the game" Kate said completely unaware of the fact she had interrupted something.
"Kate" Arizona said as she finally tore her eyes away from mine. "This is Callie." Arizona said with a light smile gracing her lips.
"Like Callie, Callie" she asked. Arizona nodded. "Callie, Callie" Arizona repeated as her eyes settled back on my glassy eyes.
"I was just leaving. It was nice to meet you Kate" I said as politely as I knew how to and walked out of the bathroom.
"Jeepers! Took you long enough" Meredith joked as she stood up and looked at me. "Are you alright?" Meredith asked in a more worried tone.
A single tear fell from my eye. It was the start of what could have been many. I wiped it away and I nodded. "I just met Arizona's new girlfriend." I told Meredith.
