This is based on Kaguya, Tsubaki and a few others... and a bit on Medea. I like earned power, witchcraft...
A power that feels random but earned.

NO spiritual power, no bloodlines, just power...

I am aiming for a Red mage like character.

My name is Mathew Price and I love learning about magic, to be entirely honest I could spend my entire life learning about it and I would never be satisfied. Moving to Japan to go to school, I quickly sought out anyone that had information on the gods and mystical practices of the area, and that led to me working part-time at the Higurashi shrine. Grandpa Higurashi, as he preferred to be called, was awesome and let me study his sacred objects in addition to my pay. I loved it, every minute of it. I learned a lot, about the Shinto Gods, Buddhism, magic and myth and legends,...

I loved my life, dearly and deeply and without reserve...

And then, one month before his granddaughter Kagome's birthday when I showed up for my shift, Grandpa called me into one of the many storage sheds... and it was here that my life really began... when Myth and magic took over I became something that I always wanted to be but never saw coming...

I became a sorcerer...

"What is this?" Mathew asked, twisting around a thick book in his hands. It was old and black and covered in vague symbols, symbols that he recognized but at the same time really didn't. The book looked to be damaged, the pages yellowing with age, and the spine damaged. It wouldn't last too long.

The man before him, Grandpa Higurashi, beamed mischievously. "It is a grimoire." The man laughed at his expression. "That is what Europeans would call it anyway. My family collects all sorts of mystical tomes and artifacts, this was said to be a collection of spells and whatnot, from the days of demons and myths! I want you to have it."

"But why, if it is so valuable."

The man sighed. "You have only worked here for three months but in that time you showed more care for this shrine than anyone in my family. You are training to be a teacher of history and mythology, so maybe you can preserve the history of this place when I die. I wanted to bribe you, a little, by giving you this book, and showing you that you are valued as an employee and possibly the only link to preserve all I hold dear."

Bowing low, he smiled. "Thank you, Grandp, I really appreciate this... I cannot wait to read this."

"I know you appreciate it... so few do now away... now... enough of this, it is time to begin cleaning out this shed, organizing it and making it shine! No point allowing any dust defile these sacred artifact."

And so they got too it.

After three hours passed, and Mathew headed home. Excited he almost immediately opened his gift up at his apartment, and read the first phrase he found aloud, trying to sound out the shifting, smeared Kanji.

"Hikari no fūin, uchinaru-ryoku, kono hosuto o mezame sase, katsuryoku o ataemasu. Kono ofaringu o uke iretekudasai, jinsei no aji, hibana wa shinpi-tekina honō ni seichō shimasu."

He managed to get out before the book exploded into green light, light that shot through him like lighting. He tried to throw it away, only for the energy to siphon his strength, and slowly he fell to the floor. Shaking, he just lay there as the book consumed his every essence...

And then it stopped, suddenly as it happened, leaving him terrified and confused... but also deeply, immeasurably interested.

"What was that?" He asked, shaking as he looked at the book. The entire thing looked amazing, in perfect, immaculate shape. "Was that... magic?" Carefully, he opened the book and saw that the pages were restored, the text clear as day, and with that he knew it. "It had to be magic... this is real... real magic! I am so going to be a sorcerer now... I just need to figure out how this all works... hopefully it comes with instructions..."
