"We can send out a patrol tomorrow," Tigerstar was looking out onto the large pool of water. "See what they find and choose camps and territories accordingly."
"No." Attention went to Rusty. His gaze was trained down the hill. "We already had a deal – we get the moors; you get everything else." He turned away, waving his tail at his warriors. They rose to follow. "We get from the farm to the tree line. We will separate in the morning. Good night." Tigerstar's head cocked.
"What about Gatherings?" He asked. "The moon will be full soon." Rusty stiffened in his step. Mothwing looked at her father, surprised. They would be doing Gatherings?
"We will meet here," Rusty responded shortly before heading back down the hill.
They headed back to their Clanmates. Mothwing stepped away as Tigerstar's announcement ended.
Mothwing paused in her steps, her tail raising as she recognized a pelt.
"Rainfoot," She hissed, stepping toward the warrior. The warrior turned to face her, setting the moss he had down.
Surprise lit up the tom's eyes and there was a pause as he looked at her. She knew it had been a while since she had seen him, it had to be the same for him.
"Hi," He meowed.
"Hey," Mothwing answered. "How have you been?"
"Good," Rainfoot said. He was still looking at her, "You look…well." Mothwing slowly nodded. She opened her mouth when Blackfoot called out.
"Rainfoot!" The gray tom stiffened. The warrior's tone made Mothwing's fur want to rise, "Come on, you've got things to do!" The ThunderClan warrior nodded hastily.
"I got to get this to Tallpoppy." He picked up the moss in his jaws, not looking at Mothwing again as he turned away. "Bye." He disappeared.
Mothwing turned away; her belly was rolling. There was nothing that Blackfoot could possibly want from Rainfoot. It was night, cats were beginning to settle. Nothing was going on.
"Are you alright?" Mothwing turned, surprised at the voice. Leafpaw was looking at her. She had not realized she had headed toward the edge. "I could get you something." Mothwing slowly shook her head.
"Can we talk?" She blurted out suddenly. Surprised amber eyes widened and the warrior pressed, "Please." Warriors were heading to sleep. No one was paying attention to them.
She must have sounded desperate because Leafpaw responded, "Sure." They stepped away.
"Could you help me?" An idea was forming in Mothwing's head. Leafpaw was not like Rainfoot. Was not like Tawnyclaw or Hawktalon, she was an enemy warrior, which made this beyond Clan control.
"With what?" Leafpaw eyed the warrior, rising to her paws again. "Do you want me to get you something?" Mothwing shook her head.
"Tigerstar won't let any of the apprentices become medicine cats." Mothwing knew she was speaking but she could not truly feel it. This felt fake. Leafpaw was not supposed to know this. "There are too many cats – and Runningnose is old, too!" She looked intently at the enemy warrior. "I want to help." She wanted something.
Leafpaw's eyes were wide but Mothwing thought she understood what Mothwing was asking of her. The warrior's belly felt as though it had twisted. There was no reason for Leafpaw to agree to this. She cursed herself, why had she said this?
To Mothwing's surprise, Leafpaw slowly nodded. "Okay," She agreed.
Firestar let out another yowl as he jumped off the stump. Warriors began to rise. It was just after dawn. It was time to leave.
Brambleheart rose, glancing over to the TigerClan cats. He almost felt like they should try to talk to Tawnyclaw but there was truly no need. This alliance was officially broken. He turned as Stormfur touched his shoulder.
"I'm going to check in with Feathertail," The gray tom meowed. "See you in a bit." Brambleheart nodded and Stormfur trotted away. The warrior started over to where most of the Clan had gathered, pausing as something caught his eye.
Squirrelpaw was not with the Clan yet. Rather, she was talking to a TigerClan warrior Brambleheart recognized but could not remember the name of. Her ears were pricked and her tail swished as they conversed. Brambleheart headed over.
"Hi." Both cats turned at his approach. Brambleheart raised his head, staring at the enemy warrior. The tom looked surprised.
"Hello."
Brambleheart nodded behind him, "It looks like your Clan is leaving. You wouldn't want to be left behind, would you?" The tom glanced back to his Clan.
"I should get going," he said, turning back to the WindClan cats. He cast another glance at Brambleheart as he meowed, "Bye, Squirrelpaw."
Squirrelpaw's ears had flattened. She responded, "Bye, Ashfur." That was his name.
As the warrior stepped away, Squirrelpaw turned to Brambleheart, "You're awful sometimes, you know that?" He scoffed.
"There's no reason for you to be talking to him," Brambleheart replied. "We got plenty of toms back in WindClan."
"It isn't like that," Squirrelpaw's tail lashed. "Don't go sticking your nose in my business."
"Don't do rabbitbrained things."
"I have spent almost a moon with him – we've just become friends! Which is a good thing," She added quickly. "Because when Tigerstar dies, we will be needing to be friendly with them." Brambleheart gritted his teeth. She was right about that, he had to admit, but he did not like this. He did not trust any TigerClan warrior right now. He did not trust Ashfur.
"Might I remind you what Tigerstar said about you. You are not in a place to be making friends." Squirrelpaw's ears went back and he turned away, "Come on, Firestar'll have both our tails if we get left behind."
"I don't know if Runningnose and Littlecloud will be allowed to help us in that regard," Barkface meowed. Tornear sighed.
"Well, then it'll be up to us I suppose," The deputy looked to Firestar. The leader looked at his medicine cats.
"I do not want you going off our territory for the search of this," His voice was low. "There is too much danger with TigerClan at our borders."
"How could we expect it to be on our territory?" Leafpaw spoke up. They were going to need to find a new Shining Cave or Moonstone. There would be no collaboration with TigerClan in this regard.
"It was last time," Firestar glanced at his daughter. "If StarClan chooses to be kind, it will be again." A bitterness was coming to his voice, and Tornear was giving his leader a puzzled look. "If either of you has dreams, I want them run by me first. Do you understand?"
"Yes, Firestar."
"Let's get going." The leader rose to his paws, looking at the Clan around them. Everyone seemed ready. Firestar raised his tail, signaling the Clan to follow as he headed toward the front.
Leafpaw's gaze went to Petalnose as she stepped away. "Do you want me to carry one?" She asked. The queen looked up at her.
"Why don't you carry Beechkit," she said. "We've got the others." Leafpaw nodded, picking the little tabby up in her jaws.
The Clan headed quickly toward the farm. Leafpaw's mind went back to her conversation with Mothwing the night prior. They had agreed to meet in a few days.
It had almost felt like a dream. She did not know why she had agreed.
Leafpaw did not know if she would truly do it.
Her gaze went ahead, to where Brambleheart had moved to Firestar's side. He knew Mothwing, certainly better than she or anyone else in WindClan did. She would need to talk to him about this.
The Clan moved down to the shore and Leafpaw turned, looking out on the water. She had heard the stories from the sun-drown-place and it was hard to believe that there could be any body of water bigger than the one before them.
Meows arose and Leafpaw turned, following her Clanmates' attention to the fence not far from them. She froze in her step.
The largest animal she had ever seen was looking at them. it almost reminded her of a deer. Its ears were pointed toward the cats. Leafpaw took a step toward the water as another came up.
"What are those?" Bounceheart hissed, his tail raising as he stared at the creatures.
"Those are horses," Whitetail replied. "Back in the old territories, we'd see them sometimes. Twolegs would ride on top of them!" The queen shook her head.
"Really?" Mintpaw's eyes were wide. "Why would they do that?" Whitetail shrugged.
"Who's to say? They're harmless – just don't go near their feet." Leafpaw felt herself relax. At least these things would not be a danger.
It did not take long before Firestar signaled the Clan to stop. Leafpaw set Beechkit back with her siblings at Petalnose's belly as Firestar moved up a hill facing the Clan. His tail was lashing. Leafpaw was surprised by how tense he looked.
"We are going to establish borders, find a camp, and hunt." He looked to his deputy, "I want you to gather up a few warriors – mark our borders immediately. We cannot allow Tigerstar to cheat us in any way." Tornear nodded. "Sandstorm," Firestar looked to the warrior. "I want you to take out a hunting patrol." She dipped her head. "I will take Mistyfoot, Brightheart, Onewhisker, and Squirrelpaw out to find a camp. Everyone else is to stay here until everything has been established." Meows of agreement rose and Firestar stepped away.
"Leafpaw." She turned at her mentor's voice. Barkface had padded over. He ordered, "Stay around here but see if you can find anything. I'll take care of things here." Leafpaw nodded, rising to her paws.
"Yes, Barkface." She headed off.
Stormfur's muzzle pressed against Brambleheart's ear. "You and I," He meowed, "Are going to catch the biggest fish in there." Brambleheart glanced at him. His chest tightened.
"Are we?" The gray tomcat nodded. "What if it's a pike?" Stormfur scoffed.
"We could take that on," he pressed his shoulder into the larger warrior. "Use a duckling or something as bait."
"Reckon we'll need something bigger for the biggest," Brambleheart remarked. Stormfur nodded.
"Perhaps," He murmured. "A duck then!"
"I think catching something that would eat a duck, it's going to need to be more than just you and me."
"No," Stormfur paused in his step, raising one forepaw. His claws were extended. "Just need to grab hold of it long enough for it to bash against a rock." Brambleheart's whiskers were beginning to twitch. He felt himself relax.
"Where'd the rock come from?" His voice was hushed. Stormfur suddenly jerked his head toward him.
"You get the rock." Brambleheart laughed.
He forced himself to stop as Clovertail looked back at them. "Toms, we're hunting," He saw her say. "You can talk any other time."
"Sorry," Brambleheart meowed. He could feel Stormfur say something as they headed after the rest of the patrol. Sandstorm was in the lead, Whitepaw at her side. She glanced back at the younger warriors, signaling for them to come forward. Smell.
Brambleheart sniffed, surprised by a scent he did not know. It almost reminded him of squirrel. Sandstorm looked at them. "You haven't smelled this before, have you?" Both warriors shook their heads. Sandstorm sighed.
"I suppose we'll figure it out with time."
Cats turned and Brambleheart followed to where Clovertail was speaking, "A hare headed that way." Anxiety rose in his belly. Brambleheart had not been excited to be assigned to this patrol.
However, Sandstorm and Whitepaw headed over to Clovertail. The she-cats disappeared into the down.
Brambleheart shifted on his paws as Stormfur suddenly took off in a different direction. He sniffed where the other tom had gone, recognizing the scent of mouse.
It did not take long for the she-cats to return, the hare dangling from Whitepaw's jaws. The apprentice's tail was held high. "None for you?" Sandstorm asked, giving the younger warrior a questioning look. Brambleheart shrugged.
"Not that I can smell," He responded. Sandstorm looked like she wanted to reply when suddenly heads shot up.
"What was that sound?" Clovertail asked. Brambleheart looked at them, surprised. What did they hear to cause such a reaction?
"A bird?" Whitepaw suggested. Stormfur came trotting back, a mouse in his jaws.
"Stormfur, did you frighten anything?" Clovertail asked.
"A bird, maybe?" The gray warrior answered. "That's what it sounded like to me – I didn't see it, though." His tail rose, "I did find, however, some good sunning rocks. Come on, you've got to see them."
"Ever the important find," Sandstorm remarked as Stormfur turned away. Brambleheart followed after the patrol.
Feathertail rested her chin on her paw as Graystripe rose. She knew that the entire Clan pitted her but every time she looked at it, it was obvious in his face. She did not know what to make of her father's reaction.
It was past sunhigh now. The hunting patrol had returned but the others had yet to. Stormfur was grooming her back. He paused as Graystripe stepped away.
"You know, he does care." Feathertail glanced at her brother.
"I know," She answered. "But he doesn't have to look at me like that." Stormfur snorted.
"I don't think he knows quite what to do," He rested his head on her side.
"He doesn't have to do anything." Feathertail lifted her head, "None of you do."
"I know that." Feathertail looked back at him, her tail beginning to lash. She did not believe that at all. However, both turned at the sound of a few calls. Firestar's patrol was back.
Feathertail forced herself to her feet, heading over to where the Clan had gathered around the patrol. Firestar's tail was held high. "We'll leave after Tornear's patrol has returned." Meows of agreement rose. Squirrelpaw stepped toward the littermates as cats broke off.
"What's our new camp look like?" Stormfur asked. The she-cat's tail rose.
"It's this little dip surrounded by gorse," Squirrelpaw replied. "There's a Tallrock, even – I was the one who found it, actually."
"Really?" Feathertail asked. Squirrelpaw nodded.
"Yeah, I went after a vole and stumbled across it."
"That's awesome," Feathertail meowed. "I look forward to seeing it."
The sun was halfway down when Tornear's patrol returned. They set out quickly. Anxious meows arose from the Clan as they entered their new camp. Feathertail eyed the sandy dip. This was it. This was their new home.
She set Goosekit back with her mother. Petalnose blinked at the warrior, she still seemed so tired after the day prior. "Thank you." The warrior nodded at the queen.
"Anytime." That was certainly true. Barkface was still reluctant to let Feathertail do anything.
As the Clan settled, Feathertail was suddenly glad that it was Greenleaf and there was no worry of snow. There was not much they could do before sunset. A fresh-kill pile was made on a stone at the base of a large boulder of what the Clan had managed to catch that day. Feathertail settled with Stormfur and Brambleheart near the edge. As the sunset, Firestar sprang onto the boulder, letting out a yowl.
"We will begin work on camp come dawn," The leader began. "I know there are worries about what is to come, and I want to assure you all that no matter want this is WindClan and we will defend ourselves by every means possible." Meows of agreements rose from the Clans. Firestar paused before signaling for silence. "For now, we must focus on establishing ourselves here. Making borders clear, collecting prey, and creating our new camp which we can thank one of our apprentices for finding." Feathertail pushed herself up as she realized Firestar was looking into the crowd at Squirrelpaw, seated next to her mentor. Her head was held high.
"Onewhisker, do you believe your apprentice has learned the skills of a warrior? Does she understand the importance of the warrior code?" The tabby dipped his head.
"She certainly has."
"Then come forward." Cats moved away from the Tallrock as she padded to its base." Firestar raised his muzzle to the darkening sky.
"I, Firestar, leader of WindClan, call upon our warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend her to you as a warrior in her turn." He looked down at the apprentice. "Squirrelpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?"
"You know I do." Firestar chuckled.
"Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. Squirrelpaw, from this moment on you will be known as Squirrelflight. StarClan honors your enthusiasm and enterprise, and we welcome you as a full warrior of WindClan." Yowls arose as Firestar descended the rock, resting his head on the newly made warrior's own. Squirrelflight pressed against him, licking the leader's shoulder.
"I guess that solves the question of who would be sentry tonight," Brambleheart remarked as the yowling died down and they went to greet the new warrior. Feathertail looked to the new warrior. Firestar had moved his head onto her shoulders, his eyes were closed as Squirrelflight spoke with her Clanmates.
Twilight had engulfed the camp and as the day ended, a new dawn was beginning.
