Chapter 26

Bobby got into the Chevelle, muttering to himself and Sam glanced over warily. He got Dean and Cas to get going, but Dean looked so pissed when he came out that Sam thought he was going to snort fire from his nose. Might have been good if he did; that would be a good weapon to have against a Horsemen.

Sam pondered this amusedly, letting his mind wander somewhere far away. An image of Dean spraying fire at War popped into his head, making him smile.

Bobby grunting beside him made him come back to reality; they were on the road behind the Impala. As he watched, Dean sped up so he wasn't so close to the Chevelle.

"So...what happened in there?" Sam asked warily. Bobby's face contorted.

"Dean needs to get his priorities straight is what happened."

"Bobby, I think you're being a little insensitive to this whole thing. I thought you were always so mad at Dad for leaving us alone. Dean is trying to take care of his family. Isn't that what he should be doing?"

Bobby sighed. "Yeah, John was always testing my nerves with you boys. This is different though. There's a whole new level of evil out there that needs to be stopped. There's no way that he can protect Cas if Lucifer and the Horsemen are on their tail."

Sam leaned back in his seat. "He knows that, Bobby. He just puts Cas above everything."

"Like he used to do with you?"

"Yeah." Sam said, but without bitterness. "Dean cares about Cas alot, and I'm not gonna yell at him if he needs some time alone. With everything going on, any one of us could die tomorrow. How do you think Dean would feel if Cas was killed? Or vice versa? Better to just leave them alone."

Bobby shifted uncomfortably. He had been curious how Sam felt about this. There was no jealously or bitterness as he spoke of the unlikely relationship, only hope for his brother and the angel.

"Plus Cas is not very easy to deal with at the moment," Amber added from the backseat, and Sam nodded in agreement.

"When..when is he due anyway?" Bobby asked curiously. The angel was pretty big already.

"I don't know...a few weeks?" he turned to Amber for an answer. She screwed up her face in thought.

"Yeah...has to be around there."

"Shit, so the baby's gonna come soon whether we like it or not." Bobby swore.

"Yup." Sam said. "As the date gets closer Dean's probably gonna be going crazy. I can't wait." he said sarcastically.

They drove in silence for a while, watching the Impala on the road ahead of them.

"Maybe I was a bit harsh," Bobby admitted quietly. He had been so caught up in the hunt that he didn't stop to think about what Dean and Cas might be going through. He vowed to be a little more tolerant in the future , but not too much or else they would think he was going soft.

Sam nodded. "Just..try to give them some space. That's what we've been doing. It's not easy for either of them, but they're hanging on. If we're not there for them, they won't won't have anyone on their side."

Bobby grunted in response, and the Winchester knew he had given in. He smiled to himself, looking up absently into the rear view and meeting Amber's sparkling eyes. She winked at him, her cheeks reddening as Bobby looked into the mirror, catching them. They both hastily looked away.

Bobby raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything. Was there something going on with the younger Winchester and the girl as well?
