Chapter 50
It was after dinner, and the atmosphere was pretty much back to normal. There might have been a bit of bad air between Bobby and Cas, but Dean knew that it would soon pass. Dean knew that Cas wasn't mad at Bobby, rather at what he said. Or rather realizing that it was true, to an extent.
Dean retold the story of his kidnapping over dinner. Cas was quiet at the mention of God; Dean hadn't told him the whole story before. The hunter did not notice it, however and continued eating with gusto. The others agreed with him that this was probably the end of the angel problems.
Dean went upstairs early, saying that he was tired after the day's events. Cas followed him upstairs with Kam.
Bobby was helping a hunter in Oregon, so he retired to his study to do some research and contact the hunter. Sam and Amber, who had plopped down on the couch, could hear him yelling at whoever was in the other end of the phone and calling him an 'idgit'.
Amber laid down on the couch, head in Sam's lap and hand hanging over the edge. Her eyes were glued to the TV screen that was playing some sappy movie.
"Amber?" Sam said, stroking her hair.
"Yup?" She rolled over so she was looking straight up at him.
"What are you going to do now that the Apocalypse is over? Go back to your town?"
Amber eyed him strangely. "Yeah, and forget I ever saw all this?" she gestured around at Bobby's house.
"Well, I don't mean the house...you know what I mean." she sighed. "What I would like is...is for you to teach me how to hunt."
Sam looked doubtful. "Are you sure? You know how dangerous it is-"
Amber sat up abruptly and switched off the TV. "I can't just forget about this, Sam. Besides, I don't have anyone back there anyway. I was an orphan, never got adopted. I lived in the orphanage until I was eighteen and then I left. I thought I wanted to be a nurse and help people, but you know what? If I become a hunter I can help people, too. I can save lives, Sam."
Sam fought a grin, but it broke across his face anyway. Amber got to her feet, hands on her hips. "What is so funny, Samuel Winchester? You don't think I can do it?" she said haughtily, fire in her eyes. Damn men. Think they're the best at everything.
Sam reached out, placing his hands over hers on her hips. "No, I don't think it's funny. I just somehow knew that's what you were going to say."
He pulled her closer, and then she was on his lap, staring at him. "Really?"
"Yeah." he rubbed a thumb against her cheek. "I know you'll do great."
Amber raised her eyebrows. "You're not going to talk me out of it?"
Sam shook his head. "Not even going to try because I know you'll get your way in the end anyway."
"Smart of you to just accept defeat now." she ruffled his hair affectionately. "If you said no I was going to ask Bobby."
"So you can yell at him some more?" Sam chuckled. "He got over the fight that you two had before, but I don't think he's used to be put in his place like that. He's been a loner for so long...he's not used to having people here."
"Well..he deserved it."Amber wrapped her arms around Sam and rested her head on his shoulder. "But I'm glad I won't have to hunt with him anyway."
They were quiet for a few minutes, enjoying the silence and the occasional swearing that issued from Bobby's study.
"Since you're staying then, I wanted to ask you something." Sam cleared his throat nervously. "We never really went out on a proper date-"
"Picking up fast food for a pregnant angel doesn't qualify as a date?" Amber asked, pretending to be shocked. "Who knew?"
'I'm trying to be serious here."
"Alright, sorry." Amber sat up so she was looking him in the eye again. "Resume."
"This is hard for me...my last girlfriend was killed by the same demon that killed our mother. I haven't really gotten close to anyone since then."
"I didn't know that," Amber half-whispered.
"There's alot you don't know. I want to tell you, and I want to know more about you. I don't even know your last name." Sam ran a hand over her cheek. "I really like you, Amber."
It sounded a bit childish as he said it, but he didn't care. It was true. He didn't want to say love, although he felt the same about Amber as he did about Jess.
Amber replied with a smile, and leaned closer to kiss Sam. "I accept your date, Sam." she whispered in his ear. "Maybe afterward we could find somewhere..a motel...you remember that promise you made me? If you survived being Lucifer's meatsuit we could have sex all day? You never kept that promise."
Sam grinned with amusement. "I suppose we could make that happen."
"So..where are you gonna take me?" Amber asked, standing up and pulling Sam with her. "Dancing?" she led Sam in a jerky dance across the floor. "Movies? Dinner?"
"How about all three?"
"Really?"
Sam smiled, wrapping his arms around her waist. "Why not? We can live it up before you jump into the hunting business."
Amber cocked her head as if a sudden thought hit her. "We're gonna need a car."
"What?"
"A car. Vroom vromm." Amber used her hands to pretend to drive. "So we can drive around the country killing monsters? I know Dean not going to give up the Impala."
Sam sat back down on the couch and raised his eyebrows. "You really thought this through, didn't you?"
"Not really. I'm just randomly saying things that pop into my head." Amber plopped down beside Sam, curling up next to him. "We can be like Bonnie and Clyde. Hitting the road, having adventures-"
"Yeah, except we don't kill people or steal."
"Well, you kind of steal. Credit card scams?" Amber pointed out, and Sam couldn't argue with her there. "Anyway..I think it's going to be great."
"Hunting?" Sam asked, running a hand through her hair.
"Hunting with you." Amber corrected, smiling up at him sweetly.
Their lips touched again, and Sam whispered through the kiss, " So I'll pick you up tomorrow night? For our date?"
"Yeah. But don't bring me straight home after." Amber giggled, resting her head on Sam's chest so she could hear his beating heart.
